Improving Predicted Distribution Models For Riverine Species: An Example From Nebraska, Scott P. Sowa, Gust Annis, Michael E. Morey, A. Garringer
Improving Predicted Distribution Models For Riverine Species: An Example From Nebraska, Scott P. Sowa, Gust Annis, Michael E. Morey, A. Garringer
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Modeling species distributions is in most instances, we believe, better if perceived as an exercise in modeling spatial patterns in habitat conditions. This perspective forces the modeler to think about factors and processes that influence local habitat and also to account for as many of these factors as possible in the modeling process. Local habitat conditions in riverine ecosystems (for example, pH, temperature, turbidity, permanence of flow, depths, velocities, substrate, cover, primary production, etc.) are influenced by a wide array of factors and processes operating at multiple spatial and temporal scales (Matthews 1998; Fausch et al. 2002). However, of primary …

The Evolution Of Intellectual Infrastructure, Peter Lee
The Evolution Of Intellectual Infrastructure, Peter Lee
Washington Law Review
This Article explores the concept of intellectual infrastructure in intellectual property law. It makes three principal contributions. First, it builds upon prior work to elaborate an infrastructure-based theory of productivity that encompasses trademark, copyright, and patent law. It is well-recognized that intellectual property law promotes productivity through allowing exclusive rights on refined intellectual creations such as source-identifying marks, particularized expressions, and specific inventions. Somewhat less appreciated, these bodies of law also promote productivity through ensuring wide access to productivity-enabling “intellectual infrastructure,” such as generic words, ideas, and natural principles, by making these assets ineligible for exclusive rights. This Article argues …
Assessment Of Risk Of Insect-Resistant Transgenic Crops To Nontarget Arthropods, Jörg Romeis, Detlef Bartsch, Franz Bigler, Marco P. Candolfi
Assessment Of Risk Of Insect-Resistant Transgenic Crops To Nontarget Arthropods, Jörg Romeis, Detlef Bartsch, Franz Bigler, Marco P. Candolfi
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
An international initiative is developing a scientifically rigorous approach to evaluate the potential risks to nontarget arthropods (NTAs) posed by insect-resistant, genetically modified (IRGM) crops. It adapts the tiered approach to risk assessment that is used internationally within regulatory toxicology and environmental sciences. The approach focuses on the formulation and testing of clearly stated risk hypotheses, making maximum use of available data and using formal decision guidelines to progress between testing stages (or tiers). It is intended to provide guidance to regulatory agencies that are currently developing their own NTA risk assessment guidelines for IRGM crops and to help harmonize …

Fibulin-2 Is Dispensable For Mouse Development And Elastic Fiber Formation, Francois-Xavier Sicot, Takeshi Tsuda, Dessislava Markova, John Klement, Machiko Arita, Rui-Zhu Zhang, Te-Cheng Pan, Robert P. Mecham, David E. Birk, Mon-Li Chu
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Fibulin-2 is an extracellular matrix protein belonging to the five-member fibulin family, of which two members have been shown to play essential roles in elastic fiber formation during development. Fibulin-2 interacts with two major constituents of elastic fibers, tropoelastin and fibrillin-1, in vitro and localizes to elastic fibers in many tissues in vivo. The protein is prominently expressed during morphogenesis of the heart and aortic arch vessels and at early stages of cartilage development. To examine its role in vivo, we generated mice that do not express the fibulin-2 gene (Fbln2) through homologous recombination of embryonic stem cells. Unexpectedly, the …

The State Of The Art In Flow Visualization: Partition-Based Techniques, Tobias Salzbrunn, Heike Janicke, Thomas Wischgoll, Gerik Scheuermann
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Flow visualization has been a very active subfield of scientific visualization in recent years. From the resulting large variety of methods this paper discusses partition-based techniques. The aim of these approaches is to partition the flow in areas of common structure. Based on this partitioning, subsequent visualization techniques can be applied. A classification is suggested and advantages/disadvantages of the different techniques are discussed as well.
