Rangeland Fires And Cheatgrass: Values At Risk And Support For Preservation, M. D. R. Evans, Kim Rollins Apr 2008

Rangeland Fires And Cheatgrass: Values At Risk And Support For Preservation, M. D. R. Evans, Kim Rollins

Articles

The high desert sagebrush ecosystems of the Great Basin evolved with fire. However, the introduction of cheatgrass (t. bromus), a highly flammable invasive annual grass, has contributed to the increased intensity and frequency of wildfires we have seen in recent years. Cheatgrass-fueled fires often kill native perennials, which creates openings for further cheatgrass expansion. Winters with more moisture than usual result in more cheatgrass and increased fire risk. Over time the result is ever larger areas dominated by cheatgrass and other invasive weeds that burn with greater frequency, and increasingly severe fire seasons.

Using A Paradigm Shift To Teach Neurobiology And The Nature Of Science—A C.R.E.A.T.E.-Based Approach, Sally G. Hoskins Apr 2008

Using A Paradigm Shift To Teach Neurobiology And The Nature Of Science—A C.R.E.A.T.E.-Based Approach, Sally G. Hoskins

Publications and Research

Decades ago, classic experiments established the phenomenon of “neural induction” (Spemann and Mangold, 1924; Holtfreter, 1933). It appeared clear that amphibian ectoderm was pre-programmed to form epidermis, and that the neural phenotype was induced by a chemical signal from mesoderm. The “ectoderm makes skin, unless induced to make nervous system” model appeared in many textbooks. This interpretation, however, was not simply incorrect but 180 degrees out of alignment with the actual situation. As subsequently demonstrated, the default state of amphibian ectoderm is neuronal, and the expression of the epidermal phenotype requires cell signaling (Hemmati-Brivanlou and Melton, 1992; 1994; 1997). Supporting Teachers In Their Integration Of Technology With Literacy, Margaret A. Moore-Hart

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study investigates how two elementary teachers begin to use technology in a private school that had access to technology at many levels. Using a collaborative teacher-research model, the researcher specifically examined how to support teachers’ practice as they integrated technology tools within their literacy curriculum. Due to a supportive context, the teachers refined their writing instruction to include technology tools, and students improved their literacy through challenging learning experiences.

Eleven new cannabinoid esters, together with three known cannabinoid acids and Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol ( Delta9-THC ), were isolated from a high-potency variety of Cannabis sativa. The structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses to be beta-fenchyl Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinolate ( 1), epi-bornyl Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinolate ( 2), alpha-terpenyl Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinolate ( 3), 4-terpenyl Delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinolate ( 4), alpha-cadinyl Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinolate ( 5), gamma-eudesmyl Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinolate ( 6), gamma-eudesmyl cannabigerolate ( 7), 4-terpenyl cannabinolate ( 8), bornyl Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinolate ( 9), alpha-fenchyl Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinolate ( 10), alpha-cadinyl cannabigerolate ( 11), Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol ( Delta9-THC ), Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A ( Delta9-THCA ), cannabinolic acid A ( CBNA), and cannabigerolic acid ( CBGA). Artificial Transitive Fatty Acid (Tfa) Ban In Restaurants In Us Cities: Nyc-Doh Tfa Ban As A Model For Proactive Public Health Policy, Vidia S. Ramdeen Apr 2008

Artificial Transitive Fatty Acid (Tfa) Ban In Restaurants In Us Cities: Nyc-Doh Tfa Ban As A Model For Proactive Public Health Policy, Vidia S. Ramdeen

Master in Public Administration Theses

Today, restaurants, including all eateries that operate within New York City, as well as restaurants across the country, regularly use a rather large amount of an artery-clogging agent, commonly found within their vital ingredients. Artificial transitive fatty acid, or trans-fat as known to the consumer, is the target of the NYC Board of Health and Mental Hygiene, medical experts, and health conscious consumers, for permanent removal from all NYC restaurant menus by July 2008. Specifically, the NYC health code now requires that all establishments holding a NYC Health Department permit, including all restaurants, caterers, stationary hot and cold vendors, and …

Text Sets: Making Connections Between And Across Books, Barbara A. Ward, Terrell A. Young

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Linking books together has become a popular trend in many classrooms. More and more teachers are creating text sets—collections of books grouped around a similar topic, theme, genre, or author. Text sets allow readers to organize responses in a way that helps them notice patterns, make literary connections, and develop insights across books (Lehman, 2007).

Acquisition Of Cardiac Control Parameters From Whole Vagus Nerve Recordings, Marcia A. Pool Apr 2008

Acquisition Of Cardiac Control Parameters From Whole Vagus Nerve Recordings, Marcia A. Pool

Doctoral Dissertations

Heart rate varies continuously depending on the amount of activity being performed or the emotional state of an individual. Both branches of the autonomic nervous system work to alter heart rate depending on the needs of the body. While healthy individuals are capable of altering their heart rate, individuals with certain types of heart disease do not have this ability. For these individuals, cardiac pacemakers are used to alter heart rate. Cardiac pacemakers use sensors to determine the pacing frequency for the heart; however, there is no current optimum sensor. In order to discover a better sensor, this study investigated …

Systems Biology: The Solution To Understanding Alcohol-Induced Disorders?, National Institute On Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism

United States Public Health Resources

With the decoding of the human genome, researchers gained access to extensive information about the molecules in the body, how they function in the healthy organism, and how they may contribute to certain diseases. However, despite this wealth of information, many questions remain about the ways in which these molecules interact to control more complex phenomena, including the development of many common disorders. Systems biology offers scientists a promising tool with which to deal with such complexities and may revolutionize the prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of alcohol use disorders and other multifaceted disorders. These new approaches provide researchers with new …
