Destructive Water-Borne Pressure Waves, Gregory L. Hempen Aug 2008

Destructive Water-Borne Pressure Waves, Gregory L. Hempen

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Many energetic sources (blasting, pile-driving, seismic exploration, …) near or within a water body may produce destructive, water-borne pressure waves. Pressure waves of sufficient amplitude can impact water-side structures and aquatic fauna. Such energetic sources produce pressure waves and cavitation that can cause concrete to spall, deform metal sheets that are near to the source, kill aquatic organisms, and/or damage hearing of marine mammals at large distances. Any program (energetic systems) that causes pressure waves within the water layer may be conducted in a manner that reduces the pressure waves’ severity. The methodology to reduce pressure waves does not need …

Characterization Of The Shear-Induced Potential (Sip) In Clay And The Application To Landslide Sites, Koichi Nakagawa, Shigenobu Yamada, Isamu Tsuka Aug 2008

Characterization Of The Shear-Induced Potential (Sip) In Clay And The Application To Landslide Sites, Koichi Nakagawa, Shigenobu Yamada, Isamu Tsuka

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Electrical polarizations were observed in common fine soil aggregates in shear deformation tests and simulations conducted in a laboratory. This electric potential is called Shear-induced Potential (SIP). The SIP can be interpreted as the physicochemical interaction between the surface of clay particles and interstitial water by the kinetics of the electric double layer. The SIP could not be detected in a remolded craft clay sample, which was possibly treated with electrically non-dipole oil. In the laboratory, a plane strain test under the un-drained condition was carried out to reveal the characteristics of the polarization accompanying the shear deformation. Gouges from …

Foundations For Memorials And Monuments On The National Mall, Douglas W. Christie Aug 2008

Foundations For Memorials And Monuments On The National Mall, Douglas W. Christie

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

As the western end of the National Mall in Washington, DC was made by filling in portions of the Potomac River, memorials and monuments have required deep foundations. The site history including stream channels, canals, and materials used in filling various areas has had a large impact on the development of the Mall. Variations in geologic conditions along the Mall have affected the types of foundations used. One of the earliest structures, the Washington Monument, was sited to account for problem soils. Its foundation was underpinned during construction to compensate for low-strength soils. Shallow-founded portions of the Lincoln Memorial, the …

Qinghai-Tibet Railway, China And The Solutions To Its Major Geotechnical Problems For Construction, Lanmin Wang, Zhijian Wu, Junjie Sun, Luxin Zhang

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway (QTR) is the highest-elevation one for passenger trains in the world and the first railway to connect central China to Tibet. Construction of this railway starting in 2001 had to contend with major geotechnical challenges, such as permafrost, environmental protection and seismic hazards. Its completion in 2006 is a remarkable feat in the world’s railway construction history and crystallization of wisdom of human beings. In this paper, the planning and preparing history and the construction project of QTR are introduced. The major three thorny problems, permafrost, lack of oxygen and environmental frangibility for the construction and their …

A Historical Perspective On Geotechnical Case Histories Courses, J. David Rogers Aug 2008

A Historical Perspective On Geotechnical Case Histories Courses, J. David Rogers

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Ralph Peck introduced the concept of using a geotechnical case histories course to teach students problem solving and technical communications skills, beginning around 1956. This course was developed as a professional practice course at the graduate level, intended for civil engineers of diverse backgrounds as well as geoscientists. Students were required to prepare one-page summaries of each case history profiled in the course, a requirement that left an enormous impression on the students. A different approach was employed by the University of California, Berkeley, beginning around 1970. Berkeley offered two graduate courses in the mold of ABET “capstone courses,” graduate …

Google Earth Mapping Of Damage From The Niigata-Ken-Chuetsu M6.6 Earthquake Of 16 July 2007, Robert Kayen, Wm. Clint Steele, Brian Collins, Kevin Walker Aug 2008

Google Earth Mapping Of Damage From The Niigata-Ken-Chuetsu M6.6 Earthquake Of 16 July 2007, Robert Kayen, Wm. Clint Steele, Brian Collins, Kevin Walker

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

We describe the use of Google Earth during and after a large damaging earthquake that struck the central Japan coast on 16 July 2007 to collect and organize damage information and guide the reconnaissance activities. This software enabled greater real-time collaboration among scientists and engineers. After the field investigation, the Google Earth map is used as a final reporting product that was directly linked to the more traditional research report document. Finally, we analyze the use of the software within the context of a post-disaster reconnaissance investigation, and link it to student use of Google Earth in field situations.

Using New Signal Processing Techniques In Analyzing Masjed Soleyman Embankment Dam's Explosion Records, M. Davoodi, M. K. Jafari, M. Amel Sakhi Aug 2008

Using New Signal Processing Techniques In Analyzing Masjed Soleyman Embankment Dam's Explosion Records, M. Davoodi, M. K. Jafari, M. Amel Sakhi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Blasting test studies have one drawback with regard to earthquake studies; they are concerned with vibrations of much smaller amplitude than those normally encountered in earthquakes. Consequently, blasting studies can be used to calibrate dam behavior in a linear elastic range. Accuracy of numerical models should be improved by full scale tests and in situ earthquake records. In this research, first of all a short review of different classical and modern signal processing methods is presented. As it is known, classical signal processing methods, such as FFT and PSD, have many limitations in non- stationary random vibration analysis. Blasting records …

A Cyclin D1/Microrna 17/20 Regulatory Feedback Loop In Control Of Breast Cancer Cell Proliferation., Zuoren Yu, Chenguang Wang, Min Wang, Zhiping Li, Mathew C Casimiro, Manran Liu, Kongming Wu, James Whittle, Xiaoming Ju, Terry Hyslop, Peter Mccue, Richard G Pestell

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

Decreased expression of specific microRNAs (miRNAs) occurs in human tumors, which suggests a function for miRNAs in tumor suppression. Herein, levels of the miR-17-5p/miR-20a miRNA cluster were inversely correlated to cyclin D1 abundance in human breast tumors and cell lines. MiR-17/20 suppressed breast cancer cell proliferation and tumor colony formation by negatively regulating cyclin D1 translation via a conserved 3' untranslated region miRNA-binding site, thereby inhibiting serum-induced S phase entry. The cell cycle effect of miR-17/20 was abrogated by cyclin D1 siRNA and in cyclin D1-deficient breast cancer cells. Mammary epithelial cell-targeted cyclin D1 expression induced miR-17-5p and miR-20a expression …

Adrenergic Modulation Of Ca1 Neuron Activity, Kristin L. Hillman Aug 2008

Adrenergic Modulation Of Ca1 Neuron Activity, Kristin L. Hillman

Theses and Dissertations

Adrenergic receptors (ARs) represent a family of G protein-coupled receptors endogenously activated by norepinephrine and epinephrine. One area of the brain where AR activation modulates cellular activity is CA1 hippocampus, however it is not known which AR subtypes are specifically involved, nor the mechanism behind the AR-mediated changes in activity. The goal of this study was thus two-fold; (1) Identify the specific AR subtypes expressed in CA1, and (2) Identify the mechanism by which AR activation changes CA1 neuron excitability. I set forth the hypothesis that α1B-AR activation initiates phospholipase C (PLC) signaling in CA1 interneurons, causing them to depolarize …

Adequacy Of Labor Epidural Information For Informed Consent, Darla J. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Legally and ethically, obtaining informed consent for labor epidural analgesia means that the patient has a substantial understanding of the risks and benefits of the procedure. The purpose of this study was to determine if labor epidural analgesia education provided by Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to expectant women during antenatal childbirth education classes improved the recall of risks associated with labor epidural analgesia. This study also determined pregnant women's sources of labor epidural information and the perceived adequacy of that information. The role of the antenatal childbirth education class as an opportunity for labor epidural education from trained anesthesia …

Overnights Encourage Girls’ Interest In Science-Related Careers, Kimberly Christman, Sara Hankemeier, Jennifer Hunter, Johnna Jennings

Journal of Youth Development

With sell-out crowds and phenomenal research results, Science Siesta and Advanced Science Siesta are programs designed to change the traditional perceptions that girls have about science and science-related careers. Through hands-on science activities (in and out of the lab), and through working with local female scientists, girls who range from fourth to eighth grade are provided valuable opportunities to combat the stereotype that “girls can’t do science.” This article addresses the need to engage girls in science and explains “how-to” meet that need through the Science Siesta programs.

Characterization Of Adrenergic Receptor Subtypes In The Rodent Hippocampus, Christopher A. Knudson Aug 2008

Characterization Of Adrenergic Receptor Subtypes In The Rodent Hippocampus, Christopher A. Knudson

Theses and Dissertations

Catecholaminergic input, acting through adrenergic receptors (AR), serves an important role in regulating the activity of the hippocampus; however, the synaptic elements whereby the abundant input mediates its actions remains obscure. Immunohistochemical and molecular biological techniques and a variety of experimental animal models, were used to examine the adrenergic receptor profiles displayed by distinct populations of neurons (interneurons and principal cells) or glial in rodent hippocampus. In the adult rat, immunoreactive puncta for eight of the nine adrenergic receptor subtypes were differentially distributed amongst regional glia, blood vessels, and neurons of the subiculum, hippocampus proper and dentate gyrus. Developmentally, there …

Historic Origin, Range Expansion, And Habitat Suitability Of Introduced Wild Pigs (Sus Scrofa) In California, Ronald E. Loggins

Theses and Dissertations

This study describes this historic origin, recent range expansion, and a generalized habitat suitability model for wild pigs (Sus scrofa ) in California. The genetic origins of wild pigs in California was determined to be of European and Asian descent by comparing published mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data from European and Asian wild and domestic pigs with 107 wild pig mtDNA sequences from California. Based on the clustering of mtDNA genotypes, the recent range expansion of wild pigs in California was a function of both natural range expansion and multiple hunter related introductions. Analysis of the range expansion of wild …

Brownian Dynamics Simulations Of Interactions Between Aldolase, Gapdh Or Ldh With Cytoskeletal Proteins, Eric N. Njabon Aug 2008

Brownian Dynamics Simulations Of Interactions Between Aldolase, Gapdh Or Ldh With Cytoskeletal Proteins, Eric N. Njabon

Theses and Dissertations

One potentially important step in the compartmentation of glycolysis is the binding of glycoltic enzymes including: fructose-1 .6-biphosphate aldolase (aldolase), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) or lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoforms to cytoskeletal proteins like: F-actin or tubulin which is the major building block of microtubules. Tetrameric LOH can have different isoforms resulting from all possible combination of the muscle (M) or heart (H) type monomers. The LDH mixed tetrameric isoforms, LDH-M3H, LDH-MMHH, LDH-MHMH, LDH-MHHM and LDH-MH3, give distinctive electrostatic potentials and charges. If the positive electrostatic potential region between subunits A/D and subunits B/C, remains intact (such as in M3H) the mixed …

Effect Of Motivation On Superlative Responding Among Aviation And Psychology Students On The Mmpi-2, Peter A. Schmutzer

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether highly motivating instructional conditions on MMPI-2 had a differential effect on the resulting MMPI-2 profiles of undergraduate aviation and psychology majors, particularly on the validity, clinical, and content scales. Of particular interest was the effect that instructional condition had on Superlative Self-Presentation (S) scale scores among aviation majors. One hundred and thirty-two upper-level undergraduate psychology and aviation majors at the University of North Dakota were randomly assigned to complete the MMPI-2 under one of two instructional conditions, "High Motivation" (HM) or "Standard Instructions" (SI). Results of the study showed that HM …

Cellular And Matrix Changes In Articular Cartilage Of The Disproportionate Micromelia Mouse Model Of Osteoarthritis, Crystal Noelle Smaldone Aug 2008

Cellular And Matrix Changes In Articular Cartilage Of The Disproportionate Micromelia Mouse Model Of Osteoarthritis, Crystal Noelle Smaldone

Theses and Dissertations

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that affects more than 60% of Americans 65 and older. Because human subjects and samples are not readily available for research, animal models are an invaluable resource for the study of OA. Disproportionate micromelia (Dmm) is one such model that develops OA early in life due to a deletion in the c-propeptide of the Col2a1 gene. Light microscope analysis of the articular cartilage in Dmm has been completed, but is insufficient to show the cellular effects of the deletion mutation in Dmm in adequate detail. The present study explores the changes that occur …

Parowan Valley Gaming Pieces And Insights Into Fremont Social Organization, Molly Allison Hall Aug 2008

Parowan Valley Gaming Pieces And Insights Into Fremont Social Organization, Molly Allison Hall

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis primarily addresses the implications of Fremont gaming pieces in the Parowan Valley. First, I review ethnographic gaming pieces and compare them to the Fremont worked bone pieces in order to support the idea that they were used by the Fremont in games similar to the ones recorded ethnographically. Then, I analyze a collection of Fremont gaming pieces from excavations at three Parowan Valley sites. I note drastic differences in the characteristics found on pieces inside the Parowan Valley and those form outside the Parowan Valley. It is also clear that gaming pieces are being produced in the Parowan …

Development Of A One-Dimensional Contaminant Model For Streams And Rivers, Scott Allen Fant Aug 2008

Development Of A One-Dimensional Contaminant Model For Streams And Rivers, Scott Allen Fant

Theses and Dissertations

The Contaminant Model for Streams (CMS) was developed for use in studies where both data and resources for model application are limited. CMS can be quickly and easily applied, yet it is still versatile enough to be used for a variety of conditions ranging from short term spill modeling to multi-year simulations of contaminant fate in stream water and bottom sediments. The model can be applied for both organic and inorganic contaminants. Suspended solids can be transported or a steady-state concentration may be input. Steady-state, uniform hydraulic conditions are assumed within the modeled reach, which greatly reduces model complexity. A …

Prediction Of Estuarine Morphological Evolution, Gaurav Savant Aug 2008

Prediction Of Estuarine Morphological Evolution, Gaurav Savant

Theses and Dissertations

Estuaries are vital environmental and economic resources, providing habitat for thousands of species, absorbing runoff, and supporting recreation and commerce. Yet, despite their importance, estuaries are threatened by human activities. Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis and Cross Spectral techniques were used in the analysis and prediction of estuarine morphology. The estuaries selected for study were Suisun Bay, CA and Mobile Bay, AL. It was found that EOF is an effective and efficient technique to analyze morphology, a coupling with cross spectral methods such as Fourier Transformation (FFT) resulted in determination of forcing functions responsible for imparting variance to the bathymetry. …

Characterization Of Fresh Muscle Pigments In Channel Catfish And Their Influence By Chilling Stress, Youkai Lu Aug 2008

Characterization Of Fresh Muscle Pigments In Channel Catfish And Their Influence By Chilling Stress, Youkai Lu

Theses and Dissertations

Color and color components are important quality attributes for fresh channel catfish muscle. The objective of the present research was to obtain inside understanding regarding color distribution, color component stability and the pre-slaughter conditions influence on color and color components and other quality attributes. Catfish fillets were rendered to be paler and redder on iced storage; and paler, less red and less yellow by ice-water chilling process. Visual classified “reddish” catfish fillets had higher heme-protein content than “white” fillets and these pigments were derived mainly from hemoglobin. Pre-slaughter live fish chilling in ice water and bleeding at slaughter also slightly …

The Use Of A Behavior Screener To Predict Outcomes On High Stakes Tests For Elementary School Students, Rebecca Anne Emens Aug 2008

The Use Of A Behavior Screener To Predict Outcomes On High Stakes Tests For Elementary School Students, Rebecca Anne Emens

Theses and Dissertations

Studies have consistently shown that teachers’ ratings of behavior were predictive of academic difficulties. While research has clearly indicated that behavior has a reciprocal relationship with academic achievement, there is a scarcity of research on the relationship between outcomes on high stakes tests and student behavior. Early identification of children at risk for academic difficulties is vital for successful intervention and remediation. Therefore, this researcher investigated use of a brief behavior screener as a predictor of students at risk for failing a high stakes test. Results from the Behavior Assessment System for Children–Teacher Rating Scale–Child Screener (BASC-TRS-C Screener) provided an …

Sequence Analysis Of The 16s-23s Intergenic Spacer Regions Of Flavobacterium Columnare, Lorelei Melissa Ford Aug 2008

Sequence Analysis Of The 16s-23s Intergenic Spacer Regions Of Flavobacterium Columnare, Lorelei Melissa Ford

Theses and Dissertations

The 16S, 23S, and 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes are highly conserved sequences in bacteria. For this reason, rRNA genes are often used for phylogenetic classification. On the other hand, the regions between the structural sequences, known as intergenic spacer regions (ITS), are under less evolutionary pressure to be conserved. Because they are not as highly conserved, they can be used to differentiate strains of the same bacterial specie. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 16S-23S ITS of Flavobacterium columnare, an important pathogen of cultured fish, by comparing the 16S-23S ITS sequences from 70 isolates. We developed …
