The Role Of Psychotherapy In The Age Of Medication : A Theoretical Analysis Of Biological And Psychodynamic Perspectives On The Etiology And Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Tessa Leona Hutchinson Aug 2008

The Role Of Psychotherapy In The Age Of Medication : A Theoretical Analysis Of Biological And Psychodynamic Perspectives On The Etiology And Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Tessa Leona Hutchinson

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explores the role of psychodynamic psychotherapy in the treatment of schizophrenia in an era where biologically oriented psychopharmacological interventions are the dominant treatment model. The study was undertaken as an effort towards clarification, as a graduate student from a psychodynamic training program, of how my training might possess or lack efficacy or application in my future work with those living with schizophrenia. Psychodynamic and biological perspectives on schizophrenia etiology and treatment have, throughout history, remained predominantly in opposition to one another. Currently neither perspective is able to fully explain the origins of schizophrenia, nor is the biologically-based …

On Graph Isomorphism And The Pagerank Algorithm, Christopher J. Augeri Aug 2008

On Graph Isomorphism And The Pagerank Algorithm, Christopher J. Augeri

Theses and Dissertations

A graph is a key construct for expressing relationships among objects, such as the radio connectivity between nodes contained in an unmanned vehicle swarm. The study of such networks may include ranking nodes based on importance, for example, by applying the PageRank algorithm used in some search engines to order their query responses. The PageRank values correspond to a unique eigenvector typically computed by applying the power method, an iterative technique based on matrix multiplication. The first new result described herein is a lower bound on the execution time of the PageRank algorithm that is derived by applying standard assumptions …

Risky Behaviors Among University Students: The American College Health Survey 2000 And 2002 At The University Of North Dakota., Alan Allery

Theses and Dissertations

Health promotion professionals lack data regarding incidence and prevalence regarding risky behavior that University of North Dakota (UND) students engage in on a regular basis. Because of the lack of data and analysis, professionals were unable to develop a strategic plan that included science based interventions to reduce risky behavior and improve health status. The researcher used the health belief model as a theoretical framework for the study. A comparison of data from National College Health Surveys conducted at UND, in 2000 and 2002 to determine changes in behavior from 2000 to 2002. The results were also compared with a …

Oil And Gas Projects In The Western Amazon: Threats To Wilderness, Biodiversity, And Indigenous Peoples, Matt Finer, Clinton N. Jenkins, Stuart L. Pimm, Brian Keane, Carl Ross Aug 2008

Oil And Gas Projects In The Western Amazon: Threats To Wilderness, Biodiversity, And Indigenous Peoples, Matt Finer, Clinton N. Jenkins, Stuart L. Pimm, Brian Keane, Carl Ross

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

The western Amazon is the most biologically rich part of the Amazon basin and is home to a great diversity of indigenous ethnic groups, including some of the worlds last uncontacted peoples living in voluntary isolation. Unlike the eastern Brazilian Amazon, it is still a largely intact ecosystem. Underlying this landscape are large reserves of oil and gas, many yet untapped. The growing global demand is leading to unprecedented exploration and development in the region. Without improved policies, the increasing scope and magnitude of planned extraction means that environmental and social impacts are likely to intensify. We review the most …

Claims Of Potential Expansion Throughout The U.S. By Invasive Python Species Are Contradicted By Ecological Niche Models, R. Alexander Pyron, Frank T. Burbrink, Timothy J. Guiher Aug 2008

Claims Of Potential Expansion Throughout The U.S. By Invasive Python Species Are Contradicted By Ecological Niche Models, R. Alexander Pyron, Frank T. Burbrink, Timothy J. Guiher

Publications and Research

Background Recent reports from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) suggested that invasive Burmese pythons in the Everglades may quickly spread into many parts of the U.S. due to putative climatic suitability. Additionally, projected trends of global warming were predicted to significantly increase suitable habitat and promote range expansion by these snakes. However, the ecological limitations of the Burmese python are not known and the possible effects of global warming on the potential expansion of the species are also unclear. Methodology/Principal Findings Here we show that a predicted continental expansion is unlikely based on the ecology of the organism and …

The Antioxidant Defense Network: Synergistic Combinations To Prevent Oxidative Damage, Amy Marie Clement Aug 2008

The Antioxidant Defense Network: Synergistic Combinations To Prevent Oxidative Damage, Amy Marie Clement

Theses and Dissertations

One of the matchless ironies of the human body is its requirement for the highly reactive oxygen molecule, which has been clearly implicated in many diseases and the aging processes. Oxidants produced by metabolic processes damage cells by starting chemical chain reactions including oxidation of DNA and proteins as well as lipid peroxidation. Damage to DNA can cause mutations and lead to cancer if not reversed by DNA repair mechanisms. Damage to proteins causes enzyme inhibition, denaturation and protein degradation. Lipid peroxidation can cause cell lysis as well as creating mutagenic and carcinogenic by-products. The human body contains antioxidants and …

A Protein Methylation Pathway In Chlamydomonas Flagella Is Active During Flagellar Resorption, Mark J. Schneider, Megan Ulland, Roger D. Sloboda Aug 2008

A Protein Methylation Pathway In Chlamydomonas Flagella Is Active During Flagellar Resorption, Mark J. Schneider, Megan Ulland, Roger D. Sloboda

Dartmouth Scholarship

During intraflagellar transport (IFT), the regulation of motor proteins, the loading and unloading of cargo and the turnover of flagellar proteins all occur at the flagellar tip. To begin an analysis of the protein composition of the flagellar tip, we used difference gel electrophoresis to compare long versus short (i.e., regenerating) flagella. The concentration of tip proteins should be higher relative to that of tubulin (which is constant per unit length of the flagellum) in short compared with long flagella. One protein we have identified is the cobalamin-independent form of methionine synthase (MetE). Antibodies to MetE label flagella in a …

Cellular-Satellite, A Different Kind Of Final Frontier, James Lyke, Robert Pugh Aug 2008

Cellular-Satellite, A Different Kind Of Final Frontier, James Lyke, Robert Pugh

Small Satellite Conference

Extending the ideas of reconfigurable components and self-organizing, plug-and-play systems offer some very intriguing prospects for rapid satellites of the future. In this talk, we describe the “cellular satellite” as a paradigm for the ultimately modular and rapidly formed system. In this vision, all systems are formed as a vast ensemble of black-box cells, each of which is individually customizable to collectively form an integral system. Locally (within a given cell), all significant functions and properties (e.g., electrical, thermal, and mechanical) are softwaredefinable, similar in principle to the approaches used in ordinary field programmable gate arrays but extended far beyond …

Domain Duplication, Darwinian Selection, And The Origin Of The Globulin Seed Storage Proteins, Nathaniel S. Cannon Aug 2008

Domain Duplication, Darwinian Selection, And The Origin Of The Globulin Seed Storage Proteins, Nathaniel S. Cannon

Theses and Dissertations

The seed storage globulins found among virtually all spermatophytes comprise a multi-gene family of proteins with ancient evolutionary origins. The two main groups of storage globulins include the legumins (11S) and vicilins (7S), both of which play a main role in protein deposition and storage in the seed endosperm. Composed of two cupin domains (bicupin), these proteins have been recently noted not only for their close structural relationships among the two subfamilies (7S and 11S) but also for their similarity to other proteins such as germin-like proteins (GLP's), bacterial oxalate decarboxylases, and other cupin containing proteins. Previous studies have investigated …

Synthesis Towards Fulminic Acid And Its Derivatives In 1, 3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Reactions., Ophilia Ndi Toh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A new approach to fulminic acid cycloadditions has been developed. At reduced temperatures, fulminic acid is generated in situ and undergoes 1, 3-diploar cycloaddition reactions with dipolarophiles to form isoxazolines and/or its dimers. This procedure represents a novel, safe general method for the one-step generation of fulminic acid, which complements existing potentially explosive protocols.

Sex Differences In Nicotine-Conditioned Hyperactivity In A Model Of Dopamine D2 Receptor Priming: Roles Of Dopamine D2 And D3 Receptor Subtypes., Ashley Brianna Sheppard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect of a nicotine-conditioned context on locomotor hyperactivity in an animal model of D2-priming, and whether conditioned hyperactivity could be blocked by the D2 antagonist eticlopride or the D3 antagonist nafadotride. D2-primed male rats showed enhanced nicotine sensitization as evidenced by statistically significant differences in horizontal activity. D2-primed female rats administered nicotine demonstrated an increased hypoactive response after initial sensitization and increased stereotypy. Eticlopride and nafadotride blocked sensitization to nicotine in both D2-primed and non D2-primed males and females. Eticlopride blocked conditioned hyperactivity in females but not in males. D2-primed female …

Amphetamine Sensitization And In Vivo Microdialysis Of The Nucleus Accumbens Core Of Adult Male And Female Rats D2-Primed As Neonates., Zackary Adam Cope

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neonatal administration of quinpirole produces significant increases in D2 receptor sensitivity that persists into adulthood. This phenomenon, known as D2 receptor priming, is consistent with pathology in schizophrenia. Rats were administered quinpirole or saline postnatally and raised to adulthood. In adulthood, rats were administered d-amphetamine sulfate or saline every other day and were placed in a locomotor arena where activity was measured over 7 trials. Results showed that D2-primed rats receiving amphetamine were higher in locomotor activity across all days of testing compared to other groups. This effect was more prominent in males than in females. …

Characterization Of The Pathway Leading To The Synthesis Of Salicylic Acid In Plants Resisting Pathogen Infection., Alexander Eddo Aug 2008

Characterization Of The Pathway Leading To The Synthesis Of Salicylic Acid In Plants Resisting Pathogen Infection., Alexander Eddo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Salicylic acid is a plant hormone that accumulates with plant-pathogen interaction. This accumulation corresponds to the plant being resistant to infection and without it the plant is susceptible. In this study, primers of genes involved in the normal synthesis of SA were used in RT-PCR to compare gene expression levels in susceptible and resistant plants challenged with tobacco mosaic virus. Because SA synthesis shares chorismate as a common substrate with the synthesis of aromatic amino acids, HPLC was used to determine whether the increase in SA could be attributed to a decrease in amino acid levels. The results suggest that …

Roman Slavery: A Study Of Roman Society And Its Dependence On Slaves., Andrew Mason Burks Aug 2008

Roman Slavery: A Study Of Roman Society And Its Dependence On Slaves., Andrew Mason Burks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rome's dependence upon slaves has been well established in terms of economics and general society. This paper, however, seeks to demonstrate this dependence, during the end of the Republic and the beginning of the Empire, through detailed examples of slave use in various areas of Roman life. The areas covered include agriculture, industry, domestic life, the state, entertainment, intellectual life, military, religion, and the use of female slaves. A look at manumission demonstrates Rome's growing awareness of this dependence. Through this discussion, it becomes apparent that Roman society existed during this time as it did due to slavery. Rome depended …

Identification Of Chlamydial Iron-Responsive Proteins During Intracellular Growth., Brian D. Dill Aug 2008

Identification Of Chlamydial Iron-Responsive Proteins During Intracellular Growth., Brian D. Dill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterium and the most prevalent cause of bacterial sexually transmitted disease. Genital chlamydial infections, marked by chronic, intense inflammation, can lead to genital tissue scarring and infertility and is a contributing factor to development of pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy. Iron is required as a cofactor for numerous highly conserved pathways, and nearly all studied organisms rely on iron for growth. In response to iron restriction, the chlamydial developmental cycle arrests at the intracellular reticulate body stage, resulting in a phenomenon termed persistence. Persistence likely plays a role in chlamydial pathogenesis through the …

As a comparison, sites far away from the campus surrounding Bristol Motor Speedway Car Racing Stadium were also monitored. To reduce the probability of memory effects from the long-term atmospheric deposition or absorption of metals from soil a seasonal plant, dandelion, was used to monitor the metal contents. The metals monitored are cadmium, calcium, copper, chromium, iron, lead, and zinc. Fourteen sites were monitored and samples were collected once a week initially (growing time of the …

Characterization Of Heat Shock Protein A12b As A Novel Angiogenesis Regulator., Rebecca J. Steagall Aug 2008

Characterization Of Heat Shock Protein A12b As A Novel Angiogenesis Regulator., Rebecca J. Steagall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previously, we cloned Heat shock protein A12B (HspA12B), the newest member of a recently defined subfamily of proteins distantly related to the Hsp70 family that are enriched in atherosclerotic lesions. We have found that HspA12B is predominantly expressed in vascular endothelium, and that it is involved in angiogenesis which we probed by in vitro angiogenesis assays (Matrigel), migration assays and Directed In Vivo Angiogenesis Assay (DIVAA). Hsp70s are molecular chaperones that are inducible by stress and have been found to be anti-apoptotic (Li et al. 2000; Nylandsted et al. 2000; Garrido et al. 2001). Because of its homology to Hsp70, …

Using Spatial Visualization Software To Influence Cancer Control Policy: A Case Study Of Prostate Cancer In South Carolina., Shannon Amelia Shropshire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prostate cancer in the United States shows great disparities among race and socioeconomic status. Disparities in cancer rates in South Carolina are severe. Cancer control policies are lacking in ways to identify reasons for high risk populations and cost-effective ways to do so. An innovative spatial visualization program called the GeoViz Toolkit was used to determine areas of high Prostate Cancer incidence and mortality in South Carolina (rates obtained from the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry) compared with socioeconomic variables (education, income, lack of health insurance, and living in rural areas) and race. From there, recommendations were made using the …

Erosion And Trail Building: A Case Study Of The East Tennessee State University Trail System., Joshua Callahan Aug 2008

Erosion And Trail Building: A Case Study Of The East Tennessee State University Trail System., Joshua Callahan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural and accelerated erosion from trail users affects the sustainability of trail systems. Designing and building sustainable trail systems will greatly decrease the effect that erosion has on a trail. Trails that allow multiple types of users, such as hiking and mountain biking, must be able to sustain both groups. At East Tennessee State University the trail system was originally designed for hiking. Mountain bikers have become the main user group on the trail system leading to erosion problems on certain areas of the trail due to trail design flaws. The study seeks to identify the problem areas of trail …

If You Build It, Who Will Come? Identifying Markets For Low-Cost Small Satellites, Jeff Foust, David Vaccaro, Chad Frappier, Dustin Kaiser Aug 2008

If You Build It, Who Will Come? Identifying Markets For Low-Cost Small Satellites, Jeff Foust, David Vaccaro, Chad Frappier, Dustin Kaiser

Small Satellite Conference

Technological advances in small satellites have opened up new markets beyond their traditional role of technology demonstration applications, but which markets would be most receptive to smallsats, and how large those markets might be, are critical unanswered questions. To determine the potential market for a notional lowcost smallsat, Futron Corporation performed a market definition study. The first step of this process was to identify all the potential markets that could be served by a notional low-cost smallsat. Through a process of secondary research and interviews with smallsat manufacturers, Futron identified over 30 potential markets in the military, civil/commercial communications, civil/commercial …

The Role Of Community Values In Wind Energy Development: Exploring The Benefits And Applications Of Community Wind For Reducing Local Opposition To Wind Energy Systems, Amanda Vaccaro Aug 2008

The Role Of Community Values In Wind Energy Development: Exploring The Benefits And Applications Of Community Wind For Reducing Local Opposition To Wind Energy Systems, Amanda Vaccaro

Georgetown Law Student Series

Worldwide, wind energy generation is growing rapidly as a cleaner and less invasive alternative to traditional fossil-fuel energy sources. Yet, in the United States, the advancement of wind energy has been stunted by three factors: (1) the uncertainty of the federal Production Tax Credit; (2) the lack of transmission lines connecting wind projects to electricity grids; and (3) enduring local cultural and aesthetic objections to wind turbines. Frustrated with the imbalanced allocation of costs and benefits imposed by most wind energy projects, some individuals and municipalities have deployed zoning laws, nuisance claims, or environmentalist arguments to discourage wind energy development …
