Patterns Of Fish Communities And Limnological Conditions Relative To Floodplain Landscapes, Seiji Miyazono
Patterns Of Fish Communities And Limnological Conditions Relative To Floodplain Landscapes, Seiji Miyazono
Theses and Dissertations
The Yazoo River Basin of Mississippi includes several rivers and hundreds of floodplain lakes within an area greatly impacted by agriculture. I studied 17 of these lakes distributed over the lower half of the Yazoo River Basin to document fish assemblages and limnological patterns and to identify environmental variables that might influence these assemblages. Potential connectivity of the lake to parent river and wetland-lake area ratio in the watershed were related to the limnological conditions and fish communities. Lakes with greater potential connectivity tended to be deeper and had greater specific conductance and greater fish species richness including more riverine …
Physiological Impact Of Hematocrit Level During Stress In Broilers, Lindsay Hale Mcwilliams
Physiological Impact Of Hematocrit Level During Stress In Broilers, Lindsay Hale Mcwilliams
Theses and Dissertations
Initial experiments evaluated the impact of hematocrit on a bird’s ability to adapt to stress and what physiological mechanisms occurred to maintain oxygen carrying capacity (OCC). A final experiment was conducted to obtain proteomic evaluation of protein expression in monocytes of unstressed broilers. In initial experiments, ACTH treatment was applied to hematocrit separated broilers. Experiments evaluated effects of ACTH on broilers with low (19 to 22%, Experiment 1; 18-21%, Experiment 3), high (25 to 28%, Experiment 1; 24 to 27%, Experiment 3) or non-selected hematocrit levels (Experiment 2 and 3). After 4 d of ACTH, all treated birds had significantly …
Porcine Embryogenesis And Effects Of Mycotoxins On Early Pig Development, Hongfeng Wang
Porcine Embryogenesis And Effects Of Mycotoxins On Early Pig Development, Hongfeng Wang
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of culture media and mycotoxin on porcine preimplantation embryonic development has been investigated. In the first experiment, porcine embryonic cleavage rates were similar in NCSU-23 and PZM-3 culture media, while more blastocysts were produced in PZM-3 (P<0.05). BAX and BCL2L1 transcription levels were similar in blastocysts cultured in both media. Cleavage rates were significantly decreased in the presence of cycloheximide (P<0.05), and both á-amanitin and cycloheximide completely inhibited blastocyst formation. In the mycotoxin experiment, porcine embryonic cleavage rates decreased in 10 ìM á-ZEA group, while blastocyst rates decreased in 30 ìM á-ZEA group (P<0.05). Total cell numbers of blastocysts were significantly lower in the 10 µM á-ZEA group (P<0.05). The transcription levels of POU5F1 and BCL2L1 were similar, while that of BAX and the ratio of BAX/BCL2L1 significantly increased in 3 ìM and 10 ìM á-ZEA groups compared to control group.
Potentiation Of Microglial Toll-Like Receptor Stimulated Inflammatory Cytokine Output By Manganese: A Role For P38 Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase, Patrick L. Crittenden
Potentiation Of Microglial Toll-Like Receptor Stimulated Inflammatory Cytokine Output By Manganese: A Role For P38 Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase, Patrick L. Crittenden
Theses and Dissertations
Manganese (Mn) neurotoxicity has been recognized for a long time and it affects primarily the basal ganglia. However, only recently has inflammation, which is known to play an important role in neuropathology, been considered as part of its toxic mechanism. In the current study, we have shown that Mn-potentiation of inflammatory cytokines ( IL-6 and TNF-á) in microglia is not dependent on the activaton of the Toll-like receptor (TLR)-4 signaling pathway by lipolysaccharide (LPS), as potentiation by Mn is observed in microglia activated with agonists for other TLR, such as TLR2, TLR3, and TLR9. Furthermore, enhancement of inflammatory cytokine production …
Multi-Scale Evaluation Of Mechanisms Associated With The Establishment Of A Model Invasive Species In Mississippi: Imperata Cylindrica, D Christopher Holly
Multi-Scale Evaluation Of Mechanisms Associated With The Establishment Of A Model Invasive Species In Mississippi: Imperata Cylindrica, D Christopher Holly
Theses and Dissertations
Of concern in this research were the ecological parameters associated with the establishment of a model invasive plant species, Imperata cylindrica, across a scale of ecological organization. Specifically, the study addressed the species’ ability to: differentially respond to abiotic and biotic constraints during seedling establishment, exhibit a novel underground competitive interference mechanism, and alter the decomposition dynamics in newly invaded ecosystems. Finally, the last portion of the research was centered around creating a predictive habitat model that will provide information on the most important variables responsible for creating habitat for this species. The population level seedling study indicated that soil …
Design Of A Cyclic Pressure Bioreactor For The Ex Vivo Study Of Aortic Heart Valve Mechanobiology, Kimberly Jo Schipke
Design Of A Cyclic Pressure Bioreactor For The Ex Vivo Study Of Aortic Heart Valve Mechanobiology, Kimberly Jo Schipke
Theses and Dissertations
The differentiation of myosin into the respective heavy chain isoforms has shown a correlation with high mechanical stress. Aortic valve myosin expression has been reported; however, the characterization of the pressure response has yet to be fully developed. Thus, a cyclic pressure bioreactor was developed to elucidate the á/â-myosin heavy chain (MHC) expression in aortic valve leaflets subject to physiological and pathological transvalvular pressure loads. The pressure bioreactor achieved the desired pressure modulation via LabVIEW controlled solenoid valves. Results showed á/â-MHC expression on the fibrosal endothelium and minimal dispersal in the subendothelium, indicating the presence of smooth muscle cells. Endothelial …
Development And Application Of A Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction Assay For The Myxozoan Parasite Henneguya Ictaluri, Matthew J. Griffin
Development And Application Of A Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction Assay For The Myxozoan Parasite Henneguya Ictaluri, Matthew J. Griffin
Theses and Dissertations
Proliferative gill disease (PGD) caused by the myxozoan parasite Henneguya ictaluri is one of the most devastating parasitic infections in channel catfish aquaculture. Currently, there is no effective treatment for H. ictaluri and the unpredictable outbreaks can result in 100% mortality. Management strategies have been developed to prevent losses in newly stocked fingerlings by evaluating the PGD status of a pond prior to stocking, which is difficult since resident fish may not show clinical signs even when actinospore levels are lethal to naive fish. Current diagnostic methods are limited to the identification of an active infection and methods of predicting …
Development Of A Bioenergetic Model For Black Carp To Predict Consumption And Growth, Nathaniel Charles Hodgins
Development Of A Bioenergetic Model For Black Carp To Predict Consumption And Growth, Nathaniel Charles Hodgins
Theses and Dissertations
Black carp consume large quantities of mollusks but food consumption and growth rates have not been studied. Consumption and growth of two sizes of fish fed formulated and natural diets at 20, 25, and 30 C under laboratory conditions were measured. Consumption and growth of fish fed formulated feed increased as temperature increased but followed a convex relationship for fish fed a natural diet. Metabolic and fecal production rates were determined for fish at each temperature. This information was used to develop balanced energy budgets for black carp. Bioenergetic simulation models were constructed to predict consumption and growth in natural …

The purpose of this study was to characterize Johne’s disease in Mississippi cattle. Nine hundred eighteen animals from 23 sale barns in Mississippi were tested for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). Ten milliliters of blood and 4-10 grams of feces were collected from cattle over two years of age presented to the attending auction veterinarian. Information obtained at the time of collection included the animal’s sex, type, and reproductive status. Serum samples were screened by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for MAP. Shedding status was determined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on corresponding fecal samples. Overall, 17.3% (4/23) of sale …
Effect Of Poultry Litter Amended With Aluminum Sulfate On Plant Growth And Soil Properties, Sosten Lungu
Effect Of Poultry Litter Amended With Aluminum Sulfate On Plant Growth And Soil Properties, Sosten Lungu
Theses and Dissertations
Amending litter with aluminum sulfate (Al-S) has proven to be effective in reducing water-soluble P but there are concerns that it could result in soil pH reduction and increase levels of extractable soil Al if applied to acidic soils. A glasshouse study with soybean (Glycine max, L Merr) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L) as test crops was conducted to determine the impact of applying litter amended with Al-S at 0, 10 and 20% to an acidic sandy loam soil. These treatments were applied to meet N needs of a crop grown in soil with pH levels of 4.5, 5.0, 5.5 …

A Search For Creative Class Trail User Experiences Along The Katy Trail, Shirley Jane Mathews
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
This research focused on preferred urban trail attributes and related these to restorative places and user experiences. Focused interviews were employed in the study. Restoration was shown in aspects of naturalness and excitement. Responses to the interviews indicated that a convergence of multiple physical features contributed significantly to a user's restorative experience on the trail, especially where tree canopy was juxtaposed with distant views and there were connections to active urban villages. Where the trail did not enhance the user experience the trail was not seen as contributing to the community in a significant way. Themes emerged from the focused …

Researchers studying fibromyalgia strive to identify objective, measurable biomarkers that may identify susceptible individuals, may facilitate diagnosis, or that parallel activity of the disease. Candidate objective measures range from sophisticated functional neuroimaging to office-ready measures of the pressure pain threshold. A systematic literature review was completed to assess highly investigated, objective measures used in fibromyalgia studies. To date, only experimental pain testing has been shown to coincide with improvements in clinical status in a longitudinal study. Concerted efforts to systematically evaluate additional objective measures in research trials will be vital for ongoing progress in outcome research and translation into clinical …

Plant Recruitment In A Northern Arizona Ponderosa Pine Forest: Testing Seed- And Leaf Litter- Limitation Hypotheses, Scott R. Abella
Plant Recruitment In A Northern Arizona Ponderosa Pine Forest: Testing Seed- And Leaf Litter- Limitation Hypotheses, Scott R. Abella
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
Seed availability and leaf litter limit plant establishment in some ecosystems. To evaluate the hypothesis that these factors limit understory plant recruitment in Pinus ponderosa forests, I conducted a seeding and litter removal experiment at six thinned sites in the Fort Valley Experimental Forest, northern Arizona. Experimental seeding of four native species (Penstemon virgatus, Erigeron formosissimus, Elymus elymoides, and Festuca arizonica) and raking of litter occurred in 2005. Seeding resulted in a substantial recruitment of 14 to 103 seedlings/m2 (1 to 10/ft2) one month after seeding for two species (P. virgatus and E. elymoides), but these densities subsequently declined by …

Michelle Obama: The "Darker Side" Of Presidential Spousal Involvement And Activism, Gregory S. Parks, Quinetta M. Roberson, Phd
Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers
Pundits and commentators have attempted to make sense of the role that race and gender have played in the 2008 presidential campaign. Whereas researchers are drawing on varying bodies of scholarship (legal, cognitive and social psychology, and political science) to illuminate the role that Senator Obama’s race and Senator Clinton’s gender has/had on their campaign, Michelle Obama has been left out of the discussion. As Senator Clinton once noted, elections are like hiring decisions. As such, new frontiers in employment discrimination law place Michelle Obama in context within the current presidential campaign. First, racism and sexism are both alive and …
Ghost Dance In 31 Movements, Anny Ballardini
Ghost Dance In 31 Movements, Anny Ballardini
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A kind of poetry that tries to understand contemporary social and philosophical issues as much as behaviors by rewriting in a poetic language the video artwork of some of the main representatives of modernism and postmodernism. Such poetry is deprived of confessional hues, any personal reference has to be ascribed to a mirroring effect by which the single person empathically absorbs and projects what is conveyed, be it stemming directly from the historical time of the artwork's making and inherited, or alive at the time of its actual viewing. By following a restructuring process started at the beginning of the …

Protecting 802.11-Based Wireless Networks From Scts And Jack Attacks, Zhiguo Zhang
Protecting 802.11-Based Wireless Networks From Scts And Jack Attacks, Zhiguo Zhang
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The convenience of IEEE 802.11-based wireless access networks has led to widespread deployment. However, these applications are predicated on the assumption of availability and confidentiality. Error-prone wireless networks afford an attacker considerable flexibility to exploit the vulnerabilities of 802.11-based mechanism. Two of most famous misbehaviors are selfish and malicious attacks. In this thesis we investigate two attacks: Spurious CTS attack (SCTS) and Jamming ACK attack (JACK). In the SCTS, malicious nodes may send periodic Spurious CTS packets to force other nodes to update their NAV values and prevent them from using the channel. In the JACK, an attacker ruins legitimate …
The Use, Beliefs, Perceived Barriers, And Methods Of Delivery Of Play Therapy By Elementary School Counselors, Christine Holbrook Ebrahim
The Use, Beliefs, Perceived Barriers, And Methods Of Delivery Of Play Therapy By Elementary School Counselors, Christine Holbrook Ebrahim
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Mental health problems can interfere with a child's ability to succeed in school (Hootman, Houck, & King, 2003) and ultimately increase the risk of family dysfunction, drug abuse, juvenile incarcerations, and school drop out (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2004). Because young children often lack the verbal skills needed to communicate anxieties or fears and because children naturally communicate through the use of play, elementary school counselors realize that play therapy is an appropriate alternative to talk therapy (Landreth, 2002). Although recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of play therapy with elementary school students suffering from conduct disorders (Cochran & Cochran, …
Bradford And Winthrop: Different Approaches To Colonial New England, Jeremy George
Bradford And Winthrop: Different Approaches To Colonial New England, Jeremy George
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Environmental historians usually discuss American colonists as if they were all the same. Thus, the Puritan communities that grew rapidly after John Winthrop's arrival in 1630 often overshadow the earlier Separatist colony at Plymouth, which leads to the assumption that all settlers acted in similar ways with regard to land use and the environment. By analyzing Bradford and Winthrop, it becomes possible to see a different picture of colonization in New England. It becomes evident that deforestation happened over time, and in spite of early resistance. It is also clear that colonial settlers viewed resources in different ways. The authorities …
An Examination: Using Participatory Action Research In A Marginalized Coastal Community At Risk To Natural Hazards, Joselin Simoneaux Landry
An Examination: Using Participatory Action Research In A Marginalized Coastal Community At Risk To Natural Hazards, Joselin Simoneaux Landry
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This extended case study examines the appropriateness of using Participatory Action Research (PAR) in a small, marginalized coastal community at risk to natural hazards. PAR is a method of conducting high-quality research to support the social change goals of diverse cultural and ethnic communities, especially as they relate to community involvement, democracy, emancipation, and liberation (Lindsey and McGuinness (1998). PAR is not the typical research methodology for hazards research. The community's goal was to "Save our heritage and our land". They consisted of 75-80 members who primarily make their living by seafood extraction. This community has experienced social oppression and …
