Folk Lore Uses Of Some Plants By The Tribes Of Madhya Pradesh With Special Reference To Their Conservation, Sumeet Dwivedi, Abhishek Dwivedi, S. N. Dwivedi Oct 2008

Folk Lore Uses Of Some Plants By The Tribes Of Madhya Pradesh With Special Reference To Their Conservation, Sumeet Dwivedi, Abhishek Dwivedi, S. N. Dwivedi

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Madhya Pradesh sustains a very rich traditional medicinal plant wealth and inherits unique plant and animal communities. Due to deforestation, loss of biodiversity and indiscriminate exploitation of wild and natural resources, many valuable herbs like Abrus precatorious, Bauhinia variegta, Mucuna prurita, etc., are at the verge of extinction. The present paper enumerates status, conservation strategies and traditional uses of 80 plant species by the tribes of Madhya Pradesh. The claims were gathered by interviewing tribes of the study area. Attempts were made to verify the efficacy of claims with actual beneficiaries, although this was not possible in all cases …

Carcinogenicity Of Hexavalent Chromium, Amie L. Holmes, S. S. Wise, John P. Wise Sr. Oct 2008

Carcinogenicity Of Hexavalent Chromium, Amie L. Holmes, S. S. Wise, John P. Wise Sr.

Applied Medical Sciences [Discontinued]

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a commonly used industrial metal, is a well known human lung carcinogen. Epidemiology and animal studies suggest that the particulate Cr(VI) compounds, specifically the water insoluble compounds, are the more potent carcinogens, however, the carcinogenic mechanism remains unknown. Here we summarize recent Cr(VI)-induced human tumour, in vivo, cell culture and in vitro studies and put the data into context with three major paradigms of carcinogenesis: multistage carcinogenesis, genomic instability, and epigenetic modifications. Based on these studies, we propose a mechanism for chromate carcinogenesis that is primarily driven by the genomic instability paradigm.

Existential Temporality As Fore-Ignorance: Implications For Divine Foreknowledge, David Pensgard Oct 2008

Existential Temporality As Fore-Ignorance: Implications For Divine Foreknowledge, David Pensgard

Masters Theses

Investigation into the nature of time is commonly taken to be a necessary precursor to the study of God's temporal status. These studies involve metaphysical concerns within the philosophy of time that focus on the logical structure of tensed statements about the future. Taking a different approach, this paper investigates the nature of temporality, rather than time, and proceeds via a phenomenological methodology. This often-overlooked methodology, it is argued, is preeminent over the metaphysical methodology. When the results of the two methods conflict the phenomenological methodology should dominate discussion. Proceeding with the more powerful method, it is argued that temporality, …

Designed For Play: A Case Study Of Uses And Gratifications As Design Elements In Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, Timothy Patrick Gibson Oct 2008

Designed For Play: A Case Study Of Uses And Gratifications As Design Elements In Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, Timothy Patrick Gibson

Masters Theses

The World of Warcraft is a paid electronic experience known as a Massively Online Role Playing Game. Since its creation, this video game has attracted over ten million subscribers. A broad question asked why this massive amount of people would join this online environment. The researcher proposed that developers of the game designed certain uses and gratifications into the online environment and that these elements could be observed through a participant observation methodology. Four uses and gratifications were singled out for observation including interactivity, asynchroniety, demassification, and community. The work reports the observations of the uses and gratifications through the …

Focus-On-Form Through Collaborative Scaffolding In Expert-To-Novice Online Interaction, Lina Lee Oct 2008

Focus-On-Form Through Collaborative Scaffolding In Expert-To-Novice Online Interaction, Lina Lee

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

Synchronous Computer-mediated communication (CMC) creates affordable learning conditions to support both meaning-oriented communication and focus-on-form reflection that play an essential role in the development of language competence. This paper reports how corrective feedback was negotiated through expert-to-novice collaborative efforts and scaffolding with 30 subjects working on three different tasks—jigsaw, spot-the-differences and open-ended question. The findings reveal that text chats supported the focus-on-form procedure through collaborative engagement. Despite the fact that the experts were able to provide step-by-step scaffolding at the right moment to call learners’ attention to non-target-like-forms that resulted in error corrections, they needed to be made aware of …

Hiding Behind Reciprocity: The Temporary Presence Exception And Patent Infringement Avoidance, Jonas Anderson Oct 2008

Hiding Behind Reciprocity: The Temporary Presence Exception And Patent Infringement Avoidance, Jonas Anderson

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

The temporary presence exception provides vessels engaged in international transport with a defense to patent infringement when traveling outside of the vessel’s home nation. The exception was adopted internationally and added to the Paris Convention in an effort to (1) minimize the costs associated with transporting between various countries with distinct national patent systems and (2) eliminate international tensions arising from charges of patent infringement when in foreign lands. Although the modern enactments of the temporary presence exception further these goals, this article argues that the exception is overbroad. Specifically, this article argues that the exception’s reciprocity requirement, in concert …

Nebraska’S Live Stock Sanitary Commission And The Rise Of American Progressivism, David Lee Amstutz Oct 2008

Nebraska’S Live Stock Sanitary Commission And The Rise Of American Progressivism, David Lee Amstutz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the years after the Civil War, the United States experienced tremendous economic growth. Entrepreneurs such as John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie built giant corporate businesses that dominated entire industries. The practice of vertical integration- in which a single business controlled all aspects of production and marketing-drew workers from different areas together under the same employers. Moreover, the corporations conducted interstate commerce, and they became powerful enough to drive competitors out of business. With their smaller rivals removed, the corporations were free to market their goods across the United States. As efforts to foster economic prosperity continued into the …

Stewart, Kevin C. O'Hair, William L. Gannon, Michael S. Briggs, A Marie Barron, Judy Pointer, Richard S. Larson Oct 2008

Speaking The Right Language: The Scientific Method As A Framework For A Continuous Quality Improvement Program Within Academic Medical Research Compliance Units, Kurt B. Nolte, Douglas M. Stewart, Kevin C. O'Hair, William L. Gannon, Michael S. Briggs, A Marie Barron, Judy Pointer, Richard S. Larson

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The authors developed a novel continuous quality improvement (CQI) process for academic biomedical research compliance administration. A challenge in developing a quality improvement program in a nonbusiness environment is that the terminology and processes are often foreign. Rather than training staff in an existing quality improvement process, the authors opted to develop a novel process based on the scientific method--a paradigm familiar to all team members. The CQI process included our research compliance units. Unit leaders identified problems in compliance administration where a resolution would have a positive impact and which could be resolved or improved with current resources. They …
