A History Of Nursing, Anne Webster Oct 2008

A History Of Nursing, Anne Webster

KSU Press Legacy Project

Gutsy life experience poems from a nurse-poet who knows "the forces that bend people like trees under a wet spring snow." Read these poems again and again to get the truth -- the whole truth of how her life was and how her life remains. Here in strong poems, is a complex life fully exposed.

The poems in A History of Nursing combine the professional life of a woman in the healing arts with the other aspects of her life. Just as she can never stop being the child of her parents, and adult woman, or a mother, a life …

Sex Differences In Angiotensin Signaling In Bulbospinal Neurons In The Rat Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla, Gang Wang, Teresa A. Milner, Robert C. Speth, Andrea C. Gore, Di Wu, Costantino Iadecola, Joseph P. Pierce Oct 2008

Sex Differences In Angiotensin Signaling In Bulbospinal Neurons In The Rat Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla, Gang Wang, Teresa A. Milner, Robert C. Speth, Andrea C. Gore, Di Wu, Costantino Iadecola, Joseph P. Pierce

HPD Articles

Sex differences may play a significant role in determining the risk of hypertension. Bulbospinal neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) are involved in the tonic regulation of arterial pressure and participate in the central mechanisms of hypertension. Angiotensin II (ANG II) acting on angiotensin type 1 (AT(1)) receptors in RVLM neurons is implicated in the development of hypertension by activating NADPH oxidase and producing reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, we analyzed RVLM bulbospinal neurons to determine whether there are sex differences in: 1) immunolabeling for AT(1) receptors and the key NADPH oxidase subunit p47 using dual-label immunoelectron microscopy, and …

Usda Organic: Ecopornography Or A Label Worth Searching For?, Blake M. Mensing

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Ecopornography,” more commonly known as greenwashing, is a term that applies to any entity that disseminates disinformation in order to promote an environmentally friendly public image without actually taking significant action to protect the environment. Greenwashing is pervasive and a nearly unavoidable component of consumers’ evaluations of potential purchases. Food producers and packagers are often guilty of greenwashing their products to appeal to the environmentally conscious consumer by using such terms as “free range” or “all natural.” The United States Department of Agriculture (“USDA”) has set standards for the use of the word “organic” on food labels. These standards, while …

Demographics And Spatio-Temporal Signature Of The Biotoxin Domoic Acid In California Sea Lion (Zalophus Californianus) Stranding Records, Adriana Bejarano, Frances Gulland, Tracey Goldstein, Judy St. Leger, Michele Hunter, Lori Schwacke, Frances Vandolah, Teri Rowles Oct 2008

Demographics And Spatio-Temporal Signature Of The Biotoxin Domoic Acid In California Sea Lion (Zalophus Californianus) Stranding Records, Adriana Bejarano, Frances Gulland, Tracey Goldstein, Judy St. Leger, Michele Hunter, Lori Schwacke, Frances Vandolah, Teri Rowles

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) in otherwise good nutritional condition have been consistently affected by the marine biotoxin domoic acid since the late 1990s. In this study we evaluated the temporal and spatial stranding patterns of suspected and confirmed cases of domoic acid intoxicated sea lions from 1998 to 2006, using records of strandings along the California coast obtained from members of the California Marine Mammal Stranding Network. The majority of domoic acid cases were adult females (47%–82% of the total annual domoic acid cases), a contrast to strandings that were not related to domoic acid, which were …

Acoustic Pingers Eliminate Beaked Whale Bycatch In A Gill Net Fishery, James Carretta, Jay Barlow, Lyle Enriquez Oct 2008

Acoustic Pingers Eliminate Beaked Whale Bycatch In A Gill Net Fishery, James Carretta, Jay Barlow, Lyle Enriquez

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Bycatch of beaked whales in gill net fisheries has been documented worldwide (Nicholson 1954, Di Natale 1994, Read 1994, Siliciliano 1994, Julian and Beeson 1998, Waring et al. 2006). Acoustic pingers have been successfully used to reduce bycatch of harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) (Kraus et al. 1997, Trippel et al. 1999, Gearin et al. 2000) and common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) (Barlow and Cameron 2003), but pinger efficacy in reducing beaked whale bycatch has never been evaluated due to the rarity of beaked whale entanglements in fisheries. We report that bycatch of beaked whales in a California drift …

Hybridization Among Three Native North American Canis Species In A Region Of Natural Sympatry, Frank Hailer, Jennifer A. Leonard Oct 2008

Hybridization Among Three Native North American Canis Species In A Region Of Natural Sympatry, Frank Hailer, Jennifer A. Leonard

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Background: Population densities of many species throughout the world are changing due to direct persecution as well as anthropogenic habitat modification. These changes may induce or increase the frequency of hybridization among taxa. If extensive, hybridization can threaten the genetic integrity or survival of endangered species. Three native species of the genus Canis, coyote (C. latrans), Mexican wolf (C. lupus baileyi) and red wolf (C. rufus), were historically sympatric in Texas, United States. Human impacts caused the latter two to go extinct in the wild, although they survived in captive breeding programs. Morphological data …

Hepatitis B Virus Interacts With Albumin Precursor In Vivo, Saeeda Baig, Anwar Ali Siddiqui, Shamim Mushtaq, Jawed Shafqat

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

A range of proteins has been recognized as mediators/hypothetical receptors for hepatitis B virus (HBV), but the results are conflicting and inconclusive especially regarding their biological significance. This study was aimed at identifying a novel HBV-interacting protein which would provide a better understanding of its transport in blood, attachment, fusion and entry into hepatocytes. Serum samples positive for HBV confirmed by PCR were subjected to ammonium sulfate fractionations at 50, 75, 100%, saturation. PCR of each fraction demonstrated amplification of HBV in 100% fraction. Protein analysis by SDS PAGE of fractions showed one band of approximately 69 kDa protein, in …
