Applications Of Linear And Cyclic Peptides As Enzyme Inhibitors And Molecular Transporters, Guofeng Ye Jan 2008

Applications Of Linear And Cyclic Peptides As Enzyme Inhibitors And Molecular Transporters, Guofeng Ye

Open Access Dissertations

The diversity of amino acids in peptides allows the design of different linear or cyclized compounds. Peptides can be designed to act as inhibitors, probes, or molecular transporters of other molecules. The objective of this dissertation research was to exploit the diversity of peptide structures and focused on developing linear and cyclic peptides as c-Src inhibitors and using the information derived from c-Src crystal structure to design novel peptide-based molecular transporters. A series of peptide analogues of Ac-CIYKYY were designed and synthesized to improve the inhibitory potency against active Src Linear peptide Ac-CIYKF(4-NO 2)Y (IC50 = 0.53 μM) and a …

Design And Evaluation Of Nucleoside Derivatives For Targeted Drug Delivery And Therapeutic Applications, Hitesh Kumar Agarwal Jan 2008

Design And Evaluation Of Nucleoside Derivatives For Targeted Drug Delivery And Therapeutic Applications, Hitesh Kumar Agarwal

Open Access Dissertations

2',3'-Dideoxynucleoside analogs are commonly used as anti-HIV, anti-HBV, and anti-cancer drugs. Despite of their potent activities, there are some major limitations in using 2',3'-dideoxynucleosides as therapeutic agents. The nucleosides have usually poor cellular uptake because of their hydrophilic nature. Some of the nucleoside analogs, such as anti-HIV agents, become ineffective after multiple administrations because of the development of the drug resistance, and therefore they must be administered in combination therapy. It is hard to deliver the nucleoside analogs to a particular tissue for site specific targeting. Furthermore, nucleoside analogs undergo three intracellular phosphorylation steps to become active. The first phosphorylation …

Judicial Hellholes, Lawsuit Climates, And Bad Social Science: Lessons From West Virginia, Elizabeth G. Thornburg Jan 2008

Judicial Hellholes, Lawsuit Climates, And Bad Social Science: Lessons From West Virginia, Elizabeth G. Thornburg

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

The American Tort Reform Association (ATRA) was founded in 1986 by the American Medical Association and American Council of Engineering Companies, and now has hundreds of corporate members. Every year, ATRA releases a list of Judicial Hellholes: court systems alleged to be unfair to defendants. The name is definitely catchy: the thought of a judicial hellhole invokes images of Kafka, Satan and the Queen of Hearts. No wonder ATRA's hellhole campaign has embedded itself in media vocabulary. And no wonder state courts and state legislatures bend over backwards to get out from under the hellhole label. Similarly, the U.S. Chamber …

National Juries For National Cases: Preserving Citizen Participation In Large-Scale Litigation, Laura Dooley Jan 2008

National Juries For National Cases: Preserving Citizen Participation In Large-Scale Litigation, Laura Dooley

Scholarly Works

Procedural evolution in complex litigation seems to have left the civil jury behind. Reliance on aggregating devices, such as multidistrict litigation and class actions, as well as settlement pressure created by “bellwether” cases, has resulted in cases of national scope being tried by local juries. Local juries thus have the potential to impose their values on the rest of the country. This trend motivates parties to forum-shop, and some commentators suggest eliminating jury trials in complex cases altogether. Yet the jury is at the heart of our uniquely American understanding of civil justice, and the Seventh Amendment mandates its use …

In The Trenches: Searches And The Misunderstood Common-Law History Of Suspicion And Probable Cause, Fabio Arcila Jan 2008

In The Trenches: Searches And The Misunderstood Common-Law History Of Suspicion And Probable Cause, Fabio Arcila

Scholarly Works

A detailed analysis of the common law during the Framers’ era, and of how it reflected the Fourth Amendment’s restrictions, shows that many judges believed they could issue search warrants without independently assessing the adequacy of probable cause, and that this view persisted even after the Fourth Amendment became effective. This conclusion challenges the leading originalist account of the Fourth Amendment, which Professor Thomas Davies published in the Michigan Law Review in 1999.

Learned treatises in particular, and to a lesser extent a few case decisions, had articulated a judicial duty to monitor probable cause. But it is a mistake …

Landing Native Fisheries: Indian Reserves And Fishing Rights In British Columbia, 1849-1925, Douglas C. Harris Jan 2008

Landing Native Fisheries: Indian Reserves And Fishing Rights In British Columbia, 1849-1925, Douglas C. Harris

All Faculty Publications

Landing Native Fisheries reveals the contradictions and consequences of an Indian land policy premised on access to fish, on one hand, and a program of fisheries management intended to open the resource to newcomers, on the other. Beginning with the first treaties signed on Vancouver Island between 1850 and 1854, Douglas Harris maps the connections between the colonial land policy and the law governing the fisheries. In so doing, Harris rewrites the history of colonial dispossession in British Columbia, offering a new and nuanced examination of the role of law in the consolidation of power within the colonial state. This …

Governments In Miniature: The Rule Of Law In The Administrative State, Mary Liston Jan 2008

Governments In Miniature: The Rule Of Law In The Administrative State, Mary Liston

All Faculty Publications

The concept of the rule of law ties together the seemingly disparate strands of administrative law. Indeed, the puzzles and tensions that administrative law evokes cannot be understood without recourse to this foundational concept. This chapter discusses several of the key attributes of the rule of law and explores their relevance for Canadian administrative law, for example: the rule of law as an unwritten constitutional principle; the rule of law as a political ideal which structures institutional relations and competencies; and, the rule of law as a distinctive political morality. The chapter assesses the Canadian articulation of the rule of …

This article in scrapbook form represents the endeavour of the eight authors to document a recent, collective, academic journey. The project was one embarked upon as a means to explore tensions between the ideas of embodiment that connected our work, and the rigidities of academic convention. Using various media, this article strives, in substance and form, to provoke, challenge and confront its audience into dialogue, while simultaneously asking questions about the limits of our own legal imaginations.

The "How" Of The Three Sisters: The Origins Of Agriculture In Mesoamerica And The Human Niche, Amanda J. Landon Jan 2008

The "How" Of The Three Sisters: The Origins Of Agriculture In Mesoamerica And The Human Niche, Amanda J. Landon

Nebraska Anthropologist

The origins of agriculture· in Mesoamerica have long interested archaeologists and antiquarians alike. The approaches used to understand the origins of the three sisters, maize, beans and squash, have changed over time as our understanding of the ecological context and ethnographic influences have changed. In this paper, I examine the history of the study of the origins of agriculture and assess the current evolutionary and ecological approaches to the topic. In Mesoamerica, the three sisters and humans shared a co evolutionary relationship in which humans invited the plants into the human niche and the plants thrived. Over time, the plants …

In Search Of Blood-Stained Earth: A Consideration Of Battlefield Archaeology's Applicability To Pre-Historic Conflict In The Eastern And Central Regions Of North America, Andrew P. Mcfeaters Jan 2008

In Search Of Blood-Stained Earth: A Consideration Of Battlefield Archaeology's Applicability To Pre-Historic Conflict In The Eastern And Central Regions Of North America, Andrew P. Mcfeaters

Nebraska Anthropologist

During the last twenty-four years archaeologists have proven that we are now able to investigate a previously inaccessible part of the archaeological record: the battlefield. These fields of conflict, once inaccessible due to their nature, have become accessible to archaeologists through the use of metal detectors, the global positioning system (GPS), remote sensing, historical documents, maps, photographs (aerial and period), and the geographic information system (GIS), among the traditional methods used in archaeological research, such as surface surveys and excavation. However, battlefield archaeology's current scope is limited to those conflicts recorded by history. Is it possible for battlefield archaeologists to …

Insights From The Field: Perceptions Of In-Home Interventionists Working In Appalachian Maryland., Benjamin T. Brauer Jan 2008

Insights From The Field: Perceptions Of In-Home Interventionists Working In Appalachian Maryland., Benjamin T. Brauer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As No Child Left Behind continues to impact public K-12 education, educators continue to seek new ways in which to reach out to at-risk students. Many school administrators and school interventionists are using in-home interventions to assist families in facilitating their child’s success. These interventions range from simply bringing instructional materials to the home of a frequently absent student, to facilitating the delivery of mental health services in the home. While school officials are taking on additional roles and responsibilities to try and meet the growing expectations placed on the public K-12 educational system, many feel that they are doing …

Warrantless Location Tracking, Ian Samuel Jan 2008

Warrantless Location Tracking, Ian Samuel

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The ubiquity of cell phones has transformed police investigations. Tracking a suspect's movements by following her phone is now a common but largely unnoticed surveillance technique. It is useful, no doubt, precisely because it is so revealing; it also raises significant privacy concerns. In this Note, I consider what the procedural requirements for cell phone tracking should be by examining the relevant statutory and constitutional law. Ultimately, the best standard is probable cause; only an ordinary warrant can satisfy the text of the statutes and the mandates of the Constitution.

Kepler's Method: The Conjoining Of Theoretical And Empirical Science., Marc M. Mezzina Jan 2008

Kepler's Method: The Conjoining Of Theoretical And Empirical Science., Marc M. Mezzina

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Johannes Kepler was a mathematician that changed the way that science was conceived and practiced in the early seventeenth century. Kepler’s method of scientific inquiry consisted of the joining of the theoretical aspects of astronomy with the solid empirical proof provided by observations. Kepler’s method would lead him to the discovery of his three laws of planetary motion, as well as change the fundamental questions asked by the subject of astronomy. This is a look in the method employed by Kepler throughout his most significant scientific works.

The Effects Of Residual Baylage Leachate On The Germination And Growth Of Orchardgrass (Dactylis Glomerata L.) And Red Clover (Trifolium Pratense L.)., Sheena R. Moore Jan 2008

The Effects Of Residual Baylage Leachate On The Germination And Growth Of Orchardgrass (Dactylis Glomerata L.) And Red Clover (Trifolium Pratense L.)., Sheena R. Moore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In early spring, areas of soil directly under baylage, spread for winter consumption by steers, is void of vegetation even after reseeding. This study was conducted to determine if: 1) residual baylage leachate is allelopathic to orchardgrass and red clover, 2) soil microorganisms have an effect on the toxicity of the leachate, and 3) toxicity decreases over time. Petri dishes, as well as potted soil/sand mixtures, were used to test for allelopathy. Leachate reduced seed germination and seedling length as compared to distilled water. There is evidence that soil microorganisms did not affect leachate toxicity. Toxicity of leachate to both …

From Human To Robot And Back Again: The Process Of Rehearsing And Performing Jacie Tripplethree In Alan Ayckbourn's "Comic Potential"., Denice R. Burbach

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The control of physical and vocal characteristics of Jacie Tripplethree in Alan Ayckbourn’s Comic Potential seemed imperative to the demands and success of the role. While important, the more difficult the task is, the simpler the approach through the process of research, rehearsal, and performance should be. E.C. Zeeman said, “Technical skill is mastery of complexity while creativity is mastery of simplicity.” In the midst of this modern farce I have found the simplicity of mere presence on stage and explored some of the history of comedy, women in comedy, and the invention of the android…and experienced the excitement and …

Delay Discounting In Adolescent Substance Abuse And Juvenile Delinquency: A Comparison Of Measures Of Impulsive Behavior., Eric S. Grady Jan 2008

Delay Discounting In Adolescent Substance Abuse And Juvenile Delinquency: A Comparison Of Measures Of Impulsive Behavior., Eric S. Grady

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent research in the areas of substance use and juvenile delinquency has revealed that impulsivity is a multi-dimensional construct. Additionally, researchers have expressed the need for more objective, behavioral measures of impulsive behavior. This study was conducted to examine how a delay-discounting procedure, continuous performance test and questionnaire-based measures of impulsivity relate to substance use and delinquent behavior. The sample was comprised of 42 adolescents (35 male) residing in an inpatient treatment facility for alcohol and substance use. The hyperbolic discounting function did not provide a good fit to the delay-discounting data. As such, the area under the curve (AUC) …

A Comparison Of Bacterial Adherence On Standard Orthodontic Brackets And Titanium Miniscrew Implants: An In Vivo And In Vitro Study., Lindsay Jackfert

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fixed orthodontic appliances including standard brackets and titanium minscrews have the ability to introduce mechanical plaque (biofilm) traps. These orthodontic appliances impair plaque removal, proper oral hygiene, and gingival health11. The purpose of this study is to determine the bacterial accumulation and subsequent biofilm formation on miniscrews and compare it to that of metal orthodontic brackets, in vivo and in-vitro. Plaque samples were taken from the orthodontic brackets and miniscrews in-vivo. S. mutans, Lactobacillus casei, and P. gingivalis were cultured from these samples. In-vitro, a unique experimental set-up was created in the laboratory. Metal brackets and titanium miniscrew implants were …

Cultural Assimilation, Appropriation And Commercialization: Authenticity In Rap Music, 1997-2004., Jonathan P. Tummons Jan 2008

Cultural Assimilation, Appropriation And Commercialization: Authenticity In Rap Music, 1997-2004., Jonathan P. Tummons

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis examines the changes in authenticity in rap lyrics between 1997 and 2004. Throughout its American history, Black music has expressed the lived experiences, the psychological realities, of Africans in diaspora and has always functioned to help create, negotiate and maintain cultural identity or “Blackness”. Within the last 20 years, rap music has undergone a tremendous amount of commercialization and appropriation by capitalistic culture industries and their largely white consumer base which has resulted in the widespread assimilation of black cultural expression into popular (white) culture. Rap artists increasingly invoke their authenticity as a way of preserving their cultural …

Model-Centered Instruction, The Design, And The Designer, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii Jan 2008

Model-Centered Instruction, The Design, And The Designer, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii

Faculty Publications

A model of instruction described by Wenger (1987) identifies three elements that are active during instruction: the mental model the instructor wishes to share with the learner, the external experience used to communicate the mental model, and the evolving mental model of the learner. Gibbons (2003a), writing in response to Seel (2003), noted this three-part description as a bridge concept relating learning and instruction. This view has important practical implications for designers of instruction. For example, Gibbons and Rogers (in press) propose that there exists a natural layered architecture within instructional designs that corresponds with instructional functions. Among these layers …

(Trans)Forming Belief, Transforming Desire: An Analysis Of Conversion And Belief In Contemporary American Fiction., Anthony Zias Jan 2008

(Trans)Forming Belief, Transforming Desire: An Analysis Of Conversion And Belief In Contemporary American Fiction., Anthony Zias

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation locates a problem in poststructuralism's approach to the concept of believing. Since poststructuralism establishes itself as an intellectual inquiry that deconstructs not only particular beliefs but also the act of believing, many poststructuralists overlook the fact that their own philosophical premises must be initially believed before their critical interventions gain credence. These critics do not explain how belief, as such, emerges within people or why people adopt one belief system over another. To address this aporia, this dissertation reviews both Jacques Derrida's conceptualization of the decision as a choice divorced from rational calculation of evidence and J.F. Lyotard's …

Effects Of Friendship In Transactions In An Emerging Market: Empirical Evidence From Brazil, Wesley Mendes-Da-Silva, Thaís Fernanda Salves De Brito, Rubens Famá, Jonathan T. Liljegren Jan 2008

Effects Of Friendship In Transactions In An Emerging Market: Empirical Evidence From Brazil, Wesley Mendes-Da-Silva, Thaís Fernanda Salves De Brito, Rubens Famá, Jonathan T. Liljegren

Faculty Publications

This paper considers the inclusion of human behavioral aspects and implications of cognitive psychology and anthropology in decisions relating to the emerging field of behavioral finance. The formulated hypotheses were tested using 400 questionnaires, answered by students enrolled in MBA programs. The principal results suggest that individuals involved in transactions among friends or among strangers assume different behaviors—friends agree about the price attributed to an asset, while strangers show the propensity to bargain.

Six Principles For Integrating Non-Governmental Environmental Standards Into Smart Regulation, Stepan Wood, Lynn Johannson Jan 2008

Six Principles For Integrating Non-Governmental Environmental Standards Into Smart Regulation, Stepan Wood, Lynn Johannson

All Faculty Publications

Ontario recently introduced environmental penalties (EPs), the environmental equivalent of speeding tickets. EPs are widely understood as part of a move toward "smarter" environmental regulation. As part of the EPs regime, facilities with an environmental management system aligned with ISO 14001 or Responsible Care qualify for reduced penalties. The Ontario government’s attempt to incorporate voluntary standards - such as ISO 14001 - into its EPs regulations was not very smart, however, because it failed to observe six principles that, in our view, should guide the incorporation of standards into smart regulation. First, do not reinvent the wheel. If an existing …

Royal Executions: Evidence Bearing On The Subject Of Sanctioned Killing In The Middle Kingdom, Kerry M. Muhlestein Jan 2008

Royal Executions: Evidence Bearing On The Subject Of Sanctioned Killing In The Middle Kingdom, Kerry M. Muhlestein

Faculty Publications

The pages of this journal, and other publications, have seen disagreement in the past regarding the methods of and reasons for sanctioned killing in Ancient Egypt. Some of this disagreement stems from having looked at large expanses of time without regard to change, and to arbitrarily imposed limitations. By looking at a larger corpus of evidence and restricting the examination to a specific period of time, this paper establishes that the Middle Kingdom engaged in a number of methods of sanctioned killing for more reasons than has often been supposed.

Learning Policies For Embodied Virtual Agents Through Demonstration, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura Jan 2008

Learning Policies For Embodied Virtual Agents Through Demonstration, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Although many powerful AI and machine learning techniques exist, it remains difficult to quickly create AI for embodied virtual agents that produces visually lifelike behavior. This is important for applications (e.g., games, simulators, interactive displays) where an agent must behave in a manner that appears human-like. We present a novel technique for learning reactive policies that mimic demonstrated human behavior. The user demonstrates the desired behavior by dictating the agent’s actions during an interactive animation. Later, when the agent is to behave autonomously, the recorded data is generalized to form a continuous state-to-action mapping. Combined with an appropriate animation algorithm …
