The Relative Efficacy Of Three Procedures For Reducing Canine Responding., Megan E. Maxwell Jan 2008

The Relative Efficacy Of Three Procedures For Reducing Canine Responding., Megan E. Maxwell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three response reduction procedures commonly employed in applied behavior analysis are extinction, differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior (DRO) schedules, and time-based schedules of event delivery such as the fixed-time (FT) schedule. Each of these three procedures holds promise for the amelioration of canine behavior problems, yet none has been studied systematically, alone or in comparison with other procedures, with domestic dogs. In this research, the buoy-touching responses of eleven dogs were shaped and maintained using edible reinforcers. Responding then was exposed either to extinction, a fixed or an escalating DRO schedule, or an FT schedule. Extinction reduced responding more rapidly than the escalating DRO …

State Economic Policy And Development In Kenya: A Study Of African Entrepreneurship In Kisii Township And Its Environs, 1930-1978, Kennedy Mokaya Moindi Jan 2008

State Economic Policy And Development In Kenya: A Study Of African Entrepreneurship In Kisii Township And Its Environs, 1930-1978, Kennedy Mokaya Moindi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explores African initiatives in the small scale business sector within Kisii town and the larger region of Gusiiland in the period from 1930 to 1978. Despite the transition to a market economy with the onset of colonial rule at the end of 19th Century, African participation in trading activities within Kisii town and other market centers had remained minimal up to 1930. The slow integration of Gusiiland into mainstream colonial economic production before the 1930s was mainly attributed to its relative geographical isolation from major centers of economic production in Kenya together with the violent nature that characterized …

Fibroblast Growth Factor -19: A Novel Factor That Inhibits Hepatic Fatty Acid Synthesis., Sushant Bhatnagar Jan 2008

Fibroblast Growth Factor -19: A Novel Factor That Inhibits Hepatic Fatty Acid Synthesis., Sushant Bhatnagar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous studies have shown that administration of fibroblast growth factor-19 (FGF-19) reverses diabetes, hepatic steatosis, hyperlipidemia, and adipose accretion in animal models of obesity. To investigate the mechanism for this effect, we determined whether FGF-19 modulated hepatic fatty acid synthesis, a key process controlling glucose tolerance and triacylglycerol accumulation in liver, blood, and adipose tissue. Incubating primary hepatocyte cultures with recombinant FGF-19 suppressed the ability of insulin to stimulate fatty acid synthesis. This effect was associated with a reduction in the expression of lipogenic enzymes. FGF-19 also suppressed the insulin-induced expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), a key transcriptional …

User Fees In Local Finance: Performance And Potential In Czech And Slovak Republics, Phillip J. Bryson Jan 2008

User Fees In Local Finance: Performance And Potential In Czech And Slovak Republics, Phillip J. Bryson

Faculty Publications

The Czech Republic and Slovakia, like other transition countries in Central and Eastern Europe, have given significant lip service to fiscal decentralization and engaged in public administration reforms. But the subnational governments of their public finance systems still lack relative autonomy, which could be addressed partly through developing independent revenue sources for their municipalities and regions. Currently, such independent revenue sources include the proceeds of a strictly nominal property tax as well as those of a small set of local user fees and taxes designed and approved by the central governments. Together they represent only about 5 percent of total …

The Role Of Id2 Phosphorylation At Serine 5 In C2c12 Myoblasts., David Christopher Butler Jan 2008

The Role Of Id2 Phosphorylation At Serine 5 In C2c12 Myoblasts., David Christopher Butler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Inhibitor of differentiation protein-2 (Id2) is a dominant negative helix-loop-helix (HLH) protein, and a positive regulator of proliferation, in various cells. The N-terminal region of Id2 contains a consensus cdk2 phosphorylation sequence SPVR, which may be involved with the induction of apoptosis, at least in myeloid 32d.3 cells. However, the role of Id2 phosphorylation at serine 5 in skeletal muscle cells is unknown. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine if the phosphorylation of Id2 at serine 5 alters its cellular localization and role in apoptosis in C2C12 myoblasts. Overexpression of wild type Id2 decreased MyoD protein expression, which …

A Genetic Variant Of The Adaptor Protein, Afap-110, Efficiently Activates C-Src Resulting In Podosome Formation., David A. Clump Jan 2008

A Genetic Variant Of The Adaptor Protein, Afap-110, Efficiently Activates C-Src Resulting In Podosome Formation., David A. Clump

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The actin filament associated protein of 110 kDA (AFAP-110) is a well-characterized protein composed of amino-terminal binding motifs that function upstream of a carboxy-terminal actin binding domain. In vitro studies demonstrate that the amino-terminal pleckstrin homology 1 (PH1) domain interacts with activated PKCα, relaying signals that activate Src family kinases via SH3 and SH2 binding. Serving as an adaptor protein, AFAP-110 relays signals that result in the assembly of motility structures. These findings could be of physiological as well pathological significance as AFAP-110 colocalizes with SFKs in the developing brain as well as in the glial-derived tumor, glioblastoma multiforme. Effects Of Aqui-S Exposure In 3 Species Of Fish From The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California., Melody Danley Jan 2008

Effects Of Aqui-S Exposure In 3 Species Of Fish From The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California., Melody Danley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There is need for an anesthetic to sedate fishes that does not require a mandatory post-exposure withdrawal period. Such an anesthetic could be used to sedate handled fishes as they are moved from tank to tank on the farm, surveyed in the wild, released from state and federal hatcheries, or harvested for human consumption. A proprietary form of clove oil, AQUI-S® , was recently submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval as a 0-day withdrawal anesthetic for use on aquatic organisms. As part of the approval process, a large series of efficacy and toxicity studies are required. …

Response Rate Or Number Of Repetitions: Which Aspect Of Drill And Practice Testing Most Contributes To Paired-Associate Learning., Scott Davis Jan 2008

Response Rate Or Number Of Repetitions: Which Aspect Of Drill And Practice Testing Most Contributes To Paired-Associate Learning., Scott Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Precision teaching methods began in the 1960s and have grown in utility and popularity over the last four decades (Downer, 2007). The methods are used to teach across multiple contents with an emphasis in achieving fluency as opposed to mere accuracy. Speed drills, frequently used to determine the learner's current level of fluency, were found to have a significant treatment effect on learning (McGreevy, 1978; Scott, Wolking, Stoutimore, & Harris, 1990; White & Haring, 1976). The purpose of this study is to isolate and measure the treatment effect of two key aspects of the speed drill and practice component of …

Computerized Approaches To Enhance Understanding Of Organic Reaction Mechanisms: Can Reaction Mechanisms And Cplex Prelaboratory Methodology., Abdulrahman G. Al-Shammari Jan 2008

Computerized Approaches To Enhance Understanding Of Organic Reaction Mechanisms: Can Reaction Mechanisms And Cplex Prelaboratory Methodology., Abdulrahman G. Al-Shammari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two approaches to enhance the understanding of organic reaction mechanisms are described. First, a new method for teaching organic reaction mechanisms that can be used in a Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) environment is proposed and tested (Chapter 1). The method concentrates upon the important intermediate structures, which are assumed to be on the reaction coordinate, and which can be evaluated and graded by currently available computer techniques. At the same time, the “curved arrows” that show the electron flow in a reaction mechanism are neglected, since they cannot be evaluated and graded with currently available computer techniques. By allowing student practice …

Alterations In Jak/Stat Signaling Pathway And Blood-Brain Barrier Function: Mechanisms Underlying Worsened Outcome Following Stroke In The Aged Rat., Vincent A. Dinapoli

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Effective interventions and therapeutic strategies for stroke victims are few. Investigative focus on the discovery of neuroprotective drugs has drawn attention from gaining a deeper understanding of stroke pathophysiology and mechanisms underlying ultimate neuronal and functional loss. In this study we have described a method for improving the precision and accuracy of clot placement within the middle cerebral artery (MCA) of rats, creating thromboembolic method of occlusion relevant to the majority of strokes seen clinically and included the use of aged animals. We evaluated the pathologic and physiologic differences of stroke in young, adult and elderly female rats, demonstrating an …

An Evaluation Of The Non-Target Effects Of Mosquito Control Pesticides On Uca Pugnax Physiology, Limb Regeneration And Molting Processes., Todd A. Stueckle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coastal and estuarine organisms face increasing multiple challenges unique to their environment which include natural and anthropogenic stressors that threaten their physiology, fitness, and population persistence. Synthetic pyrethroid and insect growth regulator pesticide use for agriculture, urban and municipal pest control are of increasing concern in coastal areas as other pesticide groups come under strict regulations and that they possess the potential to significantly impact aquatic resources. My research focuses on how current insecticide release in or near coastal marsh environments alter the physiology, limb regeneration and molting ability of a crustacean indicator species, Uca pugnax, in the intertidal and …

Rhetorics Of Pain And Desire: The Writings Of The Middle English Mystics., Marisa A. Klages Jan 2008

Rhetorics Of Pain And Desire: The Writings Of The Middle English Mystics., Marisa A. Klages

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation, Rhetorics of Pain and Desire: The Writings of the Middle English Mystics, seeks to explore the connections between desire and pain in the writings of Richard Rolle, Julian of Norwich, Margery Kempe and Walter Hilton. All four writers develop a rhetoric that allows them to use pain and/or desire as a catalyst through which their writing becomes embodied. This embodied rhetoric serves the purpose of achieving union with God, while instructing others in the art of fusing the body, pain and desire into the ultimate conduit for divine contemplation. In each chapter, the development of each writer's authority …

Functional Domains Of P450 1a1 And 1a2: Molecular Modeling-Guided Structure-Function Study., Youbin Tu Jan 2008

Functional Domains Of P450 1a1 And 1a2: Molecular Modeling-Guided Structure-Function Study., Youbin Tu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cytochromes P450 are a large family of heme-thiolate enzymes which metabolize a wide variety of both endogenous and xenobiotic compounds. Human P450 1A1 and 1A2 are two major members of the P450 1A subfamily. They share 72% sequence identity but display different specificities towards various substrates. In order to further understand the structure-function relationships of these enzymes, we have performed several molecular modeling-based studies that examined various functional domains of P450 1As. In the first part of this project, we have investigated the ligand binding domain by developing a specificity prediction model based on the correlations between MD (Molecular Dynamics)-based …

"Divided Into Double Parts" Race, Gender, And The Double In Books 1-3 Of Spenser’S The Faerie Queene, Rachel N. Holmberg Jan 2008

"Divided Into Double Parts" Race, Gender, And The Double In Books 1-3 Of Spenser’S The Faerie Queene, Rachel N. Holmberg

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the first canto of Book 1 of Spenser's The Faerie Queene, Archimago divides Redcrosse and Una "into double parts," creating the impression that they are not just divided from each other, but divided from themselves. While this is the first time the phrase "divided into double parts" is mentioned, the theme of division and doubling has already appeared in the text. Indeed, this kind of thematic echo, or doubling, is characteristic of Spenser's work. My dissertation argues that only when we are seeing double, do we recognize the unity in The Faerie Queene . The concept of decomposition allows …

Corpulent Counter-Publics: Radical Cheerleading And Resignification Of The Fat Body, Emily Dianne Cram Jan 2008

Corpulent Counter-Publics: Radical Cheerleading And Resignification Of The Fat Body, Emily Dianne Cram

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis investigates the power of language, discourse, and symbols in the dominant construction of corpulence, and how it simultaneously constricts subjectivity and offers avenues of resistance and revolt. I focus my analysis on the public protest actions of San Francisco's radical cheerleading troupe The Bod Squad. I argue that The Bod Squad's protest constitutes a counter-public sphere in its rhetorical functions of positive self-representation and public confrontation. Through their protest actions, The Bod Squad stretches dominant ideologies of corpulence to create discursive space for alternative articulations of identities, interests, and needs. This thesis challenges traditional counter-public sphere theory and …

Tertiary Climate Change And The Diversification Of The Amazonian Gecko Genus Gonatodes (Sphaerodactylidae, Squamata), Tony Gamble, Andrew M. Simons, Guarino R. Colli, Laurie J. Vitt

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The genus Gonatodes is a monophyletic group of small-bodied, diurnal geckos distributed across northern South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. We used fragments of three nuclear genes (RAG2, ACM4, and c-mos) and one mitochondrial gene (16S) to estimate phylogenetic relationships among Amazonian species of Gonatodes. We used Penalized Likelihood to estimate timing of diversification in the genus. Most cladogenesis occurred in the Oligocene and early Miocene and coincided with a burst of diversification in other South American animal groups including mollusks, birds, and mammals. The Oligocene and early Miocene were periods dominated by …

The Future Of Federal Sentencing Policy: Learning Lessons From Republican Judicial Appointees In The Guidelines Era, David M. Zlotnick Jan 2008

The Future Of Federal Sentencing Policy: Learning Lessons From Republican Judicial Appointees In The Guidelines Era, David M. Zlotnick

University of Colorado Law Review

In the two years since the landmark Booker decision, federal sentencing policy has been in a state of suspended animation. This Article urges federal sentencing reform advocates to look to an unlikely source for realistic goals and ideological support-the experiences of Republican judicial appointees in the Guidelines Era. Its findings are based upon a long-term research project into cases in which Republican appointees stated their disagreement with the sentences required by law from the bench. The Article discusses the primary product of my research, forty comprehensive case profiles and their policy implications. Specifically, the Article demonstrates how the lessons of …

Accounting For Federalism In State Courts: Exclusion Of Evidence Obtained Lawfully By Federal Agents, Robert M. Bloom, Hilary Massey Jan 2008

Accounting For Federalism In State Courts: Exclusion Of Evidence Obtained Lawfully By Federal Agents, Robert M. Bloom, Hilary Massey

University of Colorado Law Review

After the terrorist attacks on September 11th, Congress greatly enhanced federal law enforcement powers through enactment of the U.S.A. Patriot Act. The Supreme Court has provided more leeway to federal officers in the past few decades by limiting the scope of the exclusionary rule, for example. At the same time, many states have interpreted their constitutions to provide greater individual protections to their citizens than provided by the federal constitution. This phenomenon has sometimes created a wide disparity between the investigatory techniques available to federal versus state law enforcement officers. As a result, state courts sometimes must decide whether to …

A Realistic Evaluation Of Climate Change Litigation Through The Lens Of A Hypothetical Lawsuit, Shi-Ling Hsu Jan 2008

A Realistic Evaluation Of Climate Change Litigation Through The Lens Of A Hypothetical Lawsuit, Shi-Ling Hsu

University of Colorado Law Review

Several dozen cases that can be classified as "climate change litigation" have been filed worldwide, and legal scholars have already generated a considerable amount of writing on the phenomenon. The debate and scholarship has sometimes gotten ahead of itself, reflecting on the normative implications of outcomes that are still speculative at this point. This Article seeks to ground this debate by analyzing the actual legal doctrines that may serve as bases for liability, and seeks to make a realistic evaluation of the likelihood of success of these types of suits. Climate change litigation, in its various forms, raises issues of …

An Empirical Investigation Of Judicial Decisionmaking, Statutory Interpretation, And The Chevron Doctrine In Environmental Law, Jason J. Czarnezki Jan 2008

An Empirical Investigation Of Judicial Decisionmaking, Statutory Interpretation, And The Chevron Doctrine In Environmental Law, Jason J. Czarnezki

University of Colorado Law Review

How do courts evaluate decisions of statutory interpretation made by government agencies that deal in environmental law? While research on judicial decisionmaking in environmental law has primarily focused on the D.C. Circuit, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the influence of ideology, only recently have legal scholars begun to consider the role of legal factors in judicial decisionmaking in environmental law. With special attention paid to how courts implement the Chevron doctrine, this Article empirically and doctrinally analyzes environmental law cases decided in the United States Courts of Appeals over a threeyear period (2003-05) to investigate what factors, including ideological, legal, …

Climate Change, Regulatory Fragmentation, And Water Triage, Robin Kundis Craig Jan 2008

Climate Change, Regulatory Fragmentation, And Water Triage, Robin Kundis Craig

University of Colorado Law Review

Viewed from a watershed perspective, we are unconsciously sacrificing many marine ecosystems because upstream fresh water is a regulatorily fragmented resource. That is, water is subject to multiple assertions of regulatory authority and to multiple types of use-right claims that those authorities regulate. As freshwater supplies become increasingly unequal to the task of meeting the multiple demands for both consumptive and in situ use, and as consumptive and in situ uses of water come increasingly into irreconcilable conflict, the various regulatory schemes governing water use have also increasingly come into legal conflict. These courtroom battles have revealed many tensions, overlaps, …

Subcellular Localization Of Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus Type 1 Tax Oncoprotein, Kimberly Anne Fryrear Jan 2008

Subcellular Localization Of Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus Type 1 Tax Oncoprotein, Kimberly Anne Fryrear

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Human T-cell Leukemia Virus Type 1 (HTLV-1) is a transforming retrovirus that gives rise to Adult T-cell Leukemia (ATL) and a variety of other subneoplastic conditions such as HTLV-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraperesis (HAM/TSP). In ATL, the transformation and immortalization of T-lymphocytes has been attributed to the expression and activity of a single HTLV-1 viral protein, namely the trans-activating protein Tax. Although the exact mechanism of Tax-mediated transformation is uncertain, current studies support a model in which Tax induces genomic instability in the host cell through interference with DNA repair mechanisms, dysregulation of cell cycle progression, transcriptional activation of cellular …

Rapid Prototyping For Virtual Environments, Emre Baydogan Jan 2008

Rapid Prototyping For Virtual Environments, Emre Baydogan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Development of Virtual Environment (VE) applications is challenging where application developers are required to have expertise in the target VE technologies along with the problem domain expertise. New VE technologies impose a significant learning curve to even the most experienced VE developer. The proposed solution relies on synthesis to automate the migration of a VE application to a new unfamiliar VE platform/technology. To solve the problem, the Common Scene Definition Framework (CSDF) is developed, that serves as a superset/model representation of the target virtual world. Input modules are developed to populate the framework with the capabilities of the virtual world …
