Eastern Orthodoxy Under Siege In The Ottoman Levant: A View From Constantinople In 1821, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

Research on Imperial Russia’s contacts and connections with Eastern Orthodox communities in the Levant in the early nineteenth century aroused my interest in how Britain, that other edge of Europe, related to the Ottoman Empire during this tumultuous period. Traders, travelers, envoys, consuls, and others registered their impressions and observations in myriad writings, providing historians with a treasure trove for probing the Eastern Question, the nineteenth-century European dilemma of what to do with the surprisingly resilient Ottoman Empire, still possessing strategic lands and vital waterways in the Near East. Russian and British archival and printed sources widen our perspective on …

Rain May Be Heavy At Times: A Collection Of Personal Essays, Natalie Mercer Worrell

Theses

Rain May Be Heavy at Times: A Collection of Personal Essays by Natalie Mercer Worrell is a candid, witty, and emotionally resonant exploration of modern womanhood, family life, and personal growth. Through a series of sharply observed and deeply personal essays, Worrell shares her experiences as a young mother, divorcee, student, and writer, balancing everyday chaos with moments of insight and humor. The collection opens with reflections on the challenges of rekindling a long-dormant writing practice, interrupted by illness, early motherhood, and financial hardship. Worrell charts a path from self-doubt to rediscovery, fueled by a return to education and a …

Recent Developments Affecting The Enforcement, Procurement, And Licensing Of Research Tool Patents, Joshua D. Sarnoff, Christopher M. Holman Jan 2008

Recent Developments Affecting The Enforcement, Procurement, And Licensing Of Research Tool Patents, Joshua D. Sarnoff, Christopher M. Holman

Faculty Works

A vigorous discussion exists regarding the need to provide exclusive patent rights as incentives to invent and to disclose so-called "research tools," whether such exclusive rights should apply to all uses and users of patented research tools, and whether exclusive rights to prohibit all uses of research tools would unduly discourage sequential invention. This article summarizes recent developments under U.S. patent laws of particular relevance to the debate over the patenting of research tools, and provides some insights into the practices of various academic sciences, industries, and government agencies regarding the treatment of these important inventions. The article provides a …

A Comparison Of Joseph Greenberg’S “Language Universals” As Shown In The Palestinian Arabic, Spanish, And Korean Languages, Devon R. Guerra

Senior Honors Theses

In 1963, Joseph Greenberg presented a way of describing the world’s languages by means of universal tendencies. This thesis will examine three languages representative of the three main language typologies—Palestinian Arabic, Spanish, and Korean. It will compare each of the languages to applicable language universals in order to understand the languages’ syntactical systems and prove the validity of Greenberg’s work.

Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome: 30 Years Of Study, Robert J. Shprintzen

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Velo-cardio-facial syndrome is one of the names that has been attached to one of the most common multiple anomaly syndromes in humans. The labels DiGeorge sequence, 22q11 deletion syndrome, conotruncal anomalies face syndrome, CATCH 22, and Sedlačková syndrome have all been attached to the same disorder. Velo-cardio-facial syndrome has an expansive phenotype with more than 180 clinical features described that involve essentially every organ and system. The syndrome has drawn considerable attention because a number of common psychiatric illnesses are phenotypic features including attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. The expression is highly variable with some individuals being essentially …

Neural Tube Defects And 19 Bp Deletion Within Intron-1 Of Dihydrofolate Reductase Gene, Nejat Akar, Ece Akar, Yonca Eği̇n, Gülhi̇s Deda, Saadet Arsan, Mesi̇ha Eki̇m

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aims: Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) is necessary for the reduction of the ingested folates before they are used in the body metabolism. Thus, the DHFR enzyme has an important role in folate supplementation and the DHFR gene is a strong candidate for a teratogenic locus for neural tube defects (NTDs). There is a 19 bp deletion within the first intron of the DHFR gene, which may have an effect on folate reduction. We thus studied this mutation in Turkish spina bifida patients and their mothers to determine whether there is an association with the occurrence of NTD. Materials and Methods: The …

Feeding And Foraging Behaviour In Two Coccinellid Predators: Scymnus Levaillanti Muls. And Cycloneda Sanguinea L., Ali̇ Arda Işikber

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Predatory behaviour, prey consumption, and foraging cycle of adults and larvae of Scymnus levaillanti Muls. and Cycloneda sanguinea L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were investigated using a video/computer recording and measurement system. Larvae of S. levaillanti spent more time in feeding activities compared to C. sanguinea. Adults of both S. levaillanti and C. sanguinea spent more time in non-feeding activities (digestion and cleaning) compared to their larvae whilst adults of S. levaillanti spent less time in non-feeding activities than those of C. sanguinea. Generally, larvae and adults of both coccinellid species spent most of their time in non-feeding activities. Although S. levaillanti …

Sensitivity Of Kinetoplastids To Aminoglycoside: Correlation With The 3’ Region Of The Small Subunit Rrna Gene, A. S. Hamad Elgazwy, Masoom M. Yasinzai

Turkish Journal of Biology

In vitro culture systems were used to assess the growth inhibition of kinetoplastids by a variety of aminoglycosides. The parasites were allowed to grow to the stationary phase in the presence of varying concentrations of the drugs. The IC-50 for every drug was calculated by comparison with the control. The sensitivity of various leishmanial strains to these drugs was in the order of: G418 > hygromycin > paromomycin > neomycin; however, under our assay conditions gentamycin and kanamycin were non-leishmanicidal. The effects of the drugs on the intracellular form of the parasite in the macrophage cell line were also tested. Other kinetoplastids, such …

Specific Individuals Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Are Able To Show Time-Place Learning, M. Saeed Heydarnejad, G. J. Purser

Turkish Journal of Biology

Using demand-feeders, time-place learning association of food was investigated in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in 2 small raceways (TR1 and TR2). In order for the fish to be visually identified, they were tagged individually and their behaviour and distribution were monitored by cameras. Equipping with a demand-feeder, TR1 was assigned to test 2 times/1 place (2T/1P) while 2 demand-feeders were used in TR2 assigned to test 2 times/2 places (2T/2P). After 26 days of restricted feeding (RF) the fish were deprived of food for 3 days. The results of the present study indicate that, at the group level, rainbow trout …
