Delinking Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting From Islam, Ibrahim Lethome Asmani, Maryam Sheikh Abdi Jan 2008

Delinking Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting From Islam, Ibrahim Lethome Asmani, Maryam Sheikh Abdi

Reproductive Health

Female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) is practiced in at least 28 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, a few countries in the Middle East and Asia, and among immigrant populations from these countries in Europe, North America, and Australia. Worldwide, an estimated 100 to 140 million girls and women have undergone the practice, and at least three million girls are at risk each year. The Somali ethnic community in Kenya as well in Somalia, Djibouti, and Ethiopia, has practiced female genital cutting for centuries and the practice appears to have remained largely unchanged. The Population Council’s FRONTIERS program carried out two …

The Aural In Beloved, Jody Morgan Jan 2008

The Aural In Beloved, Jody Morgan

All Volumes (2001-2008)

I know that my effort is to be like something that has probably only been fully expressed perhaps in music . . . Writing novels is a way to encompass this-this something. Toni Morrison (Mckay, 152) In an interview with Christina Davis, Toni Morrison describes her writing as “aural literature . . . because I do hear it” (230). Beloved is a particularly rich example of Morrison’s “aural literature”, literature which sounds and resounds. In an interview with Paul Gilroy, Morrison elaborates that these sounds are primarily musical: “My parallel is always the music, because all of the strategies of …

Assessing Babesia Microti Sensu Lato In Small Mammals In Northeast Florida, Kyla Marie Savick Jan 2008

Assessing Babesia Microti Sensu Lato In Small Mammals In Northeast Florida, Kyla Marie Savick

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Babesia microti is the causative agent of human babesiosis. Black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are the only proven vector and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) serve as the main reservoir in northeastern United States. The aim of the present study was to determine if B. microti is present in small mammals in southeastern United States and to compare strains found in this study to reference strains from around the world. Blood samples were obtained from cotton mice, cotton rats, a flying squirrel, golden mice, rice rats, Virginia opossums, wood rats, and raccoons in northeastern Florida. DNA was extracted from the blood, and …

Dead Hand Arguments And Constitutional Interpretation, Adam M. Samaha Jan 2008

Dead Hand Arguments And Constitutional Interpretation, Adam M. Samaha

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This Article attempts to reset the relationship between theories of constitutional authority and methods of constitutional interpretation. Several scholars assert that our reasons for respecting the United States Constitution as law—despite its imperfection and dead authors—strongly influence the proper method of interpretation for that text. The “why” of authority supposedly drives the “how” of interpretation. But this relationship can be better understood. To the extent an authority theory can be distinguished from interpretive method, it is true that the former will identify what counts as law to be interpreted. Beyond that, the asserted relationship fades. First, some authority theories actually …

Recovery Policy, The Endangered Species Act And The Yellowstone Grizzly Bear (Ursus Arctos Horribilis): A Case Study Analysis Of The Role And Function Of Environmental Organizations, Rachel A. Platt Jan 2008

Recovery Policy, The Endangered Species Act And The Yellowstone Grizzly Bear (Ursus Arctos Horribilis): A Case Study Analysis Of The Role And Function Of Environmental Organizations, Rachel A. Platt

Master's Theses and Capstones

This Thesis explores the question, "what are the politics of de-listing an endangered species?" The Yellowstone grizzly de-listing process offered environmental organizations a platform to provide the general public with a genuine opportunity to engage with the comments and positions, to the federal government. It contends that a symbolic consensus has been constructed about the American West, Yellowstone National Park and the grizzly bear and these constructed were strong enough to generate the majority of edited responses to the Fish and Wildlife Service during the de-listing process. This thesis looks at the manner in which environmental organizations employ this natural …

The Experimental Evolution Of Host Adaptation Of The Emerging Pathogen Burkholderia Cenocepacia, Crystal Nicole Ellis Jan 2008

The Experimental Evolution Of Host Adaptation Of The Emerging Pathogen Burkholderia Cenocepacia, Crystal Nicole Ellis

Master's Theses and Capstones

I investigated the ability of Burkholderia cenocepacia, an opportunistic bacterial pathogen, to adapt to a host. Studies have identified trade-offs associated with environmental adaptation, but few have investigated host adaptation. Consequently, I studied effects of adaptation by B. cenocepacia to onions (Allium cepa) on the ability to kill Caenorhabditis elegans. I hypothesized that adaptation to onions would reduce virulence in C. elegans. I evolved twelve populations of bacteria in onion tissue medium for 500 generations. Then, I quantified fitness differences between evolved and ancestral populations by direct competition, having developed molecular marking techniques to discriminate among competitors. Competitions revealed fitness …

Investigation Of The Sex Determination Mechanisms In Summer Flounder (Paralichthys Dentatus) And Black Sea Bass (Centropristis Striata), Heidi R. Colburn Jan 2008

Investigation Of The Sex Determination Mechanisms In Summer Flounder (Paralichthys Dentatus) And Black Sea Bass (Centropristis Striata), Heidi R. Colburn

Master's Theses and Capstones

In many cultured finfish species, sexually dimorphic growth is observed, therefore, understanding the mechanisms of differentiation in fishes is necessary for successful aquaculture. Summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus ) and black sea bass (Centropristis striata) are good candidate species for aquaculture because they easily adapt to culture conditions and have high market value. The production of monosex populations is advantageous in species exhibiting sexually dimorphic growth rates. The purpose of this research was to gain an understanding of the mechanisms involved in sex differentiation of summer flounder and black sea bass. In summer flounder, monosex female culture is beneficial because females …

An Investigation Of Recycled/Industrial Materials To Attenuate Hydrogen Sulfide Resulting From The Use Of Construction And Demolition Debris Fines, Kelly Ann Melendez Loaiza Jan 2008

An Investigation Of Recycled/Industrial Materials To Attenuate Hydrogen Sulfide Resulting From The Use Of Construction And Demolition Debris Fines, Kelly Ann Melendez Loaiza

Master's Theses and Capstones

One of the products of Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris recycling is C&D debris fines. C&D debris fines closely resemble soil. They may contain metal scraps, gypsum drywall, wood, soil, shingles, and concrete. Landfills have utilized C&D debris fines as alternative daily cover and/or shaping and grading material. The use of C&D debris fines has been linked to diffuse hydrogen sulfide emissions at landfills. Hydrogen sulfide emissions are not only a nuisance, but may pose a health hazard to landfill workers. This research investigates how recycled materials may be used to attenuate hydrogen sulfide emissions resulting from the use of …

Molecular Targets Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) Within The Zebrafish Ovary: Insights Into Tcdd-Induced Endocrine Disruption And Reproductive Toxicity, Tisha C. King Heiden, Craig Struble, Matthew L. Rise, Martin J. Hessner, Reinhold J. Hutz, Michael J. Carvan Iii Jan 2008

Molecular Targets Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) Within The Zebrafish Ovary: Insights Into Tcdd-Induced Endocrine Disruption And Reproductive Toxicity, Tisha C. King Heiden, Craig Struble, Matthew L. Rise, Martin J. Hessner, Reinhold J. Hutz, Michael J. Carvan Iii

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

TCDD is a reproductive toxicant and endocrine disruptor, yet the mechanisms by which it causes these reproductive alterations are not fully understood. In order to provide additional insight into the molecular mechanisms that underlie TCDD's reproductive toxicity, we assessed TCDD-induced transcriptional changes in the ovary as they relate to previously described impacts on serum estradiol concentrations and altered follicular development in zebrafish. In silico computational approaches were used to correlate candidate regulatory motifs with observed changes in gene expression. Our data suggest that TCDD inhibits follicle maturation via attenuated gonadotropin responsiveness and/or depressed estradiol biosynthesis, and that interference of estrogen-regulated …

Tolfenamic Acid Interrupts The De Novo Synthesis Of Plaque-Forming Amyloid Beta Peptides: Implications For Alzheimers Disease, Lina I. Adwan Jan 2008

Tolfenamic Acid Interrupts The De Novo Synthesis Of Plaque-Forming Amyloid Beta Peptides: Implications For Alzheimers Disease, Lina I. Adwan

Open Access Master's Theses

Alzheimer's disease (AD) distresses the lives of millions of people around the world. Its costs were estimated to be at least 100 billion dollars each year (Fillit, 2000). And so far, no cure has been found to stop or slow the progression of the disease. Senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are considered to be central in pathogenesis of AD. The plaques are mainly composed of aggregations of amyloid β (Aβ) peptides, which are generated upon the sequential cleavage of the larger amyloid precursor protein (APP) first by the enzyme β-secretase, and then by the enzyme γ-secretase. These plaques are one …

Feeding Mechanics Of A Trophic Generalist And A Specialist Shark Species: A Comparison Of Diet, Behavior And Function, Shannon Page Gerry Jan 2008

Feeding Mechanics Of A Trophic Generalist And A Specialist Shark Species: A Comparison Of Diet, Behavior And Function, Shannon Page Gerry

Open Access Dissertations

Ecomorphological studies investigate the relationship between the morphology of an organism and the environment. For feeding, this can be accomplished by a multi-level analysis of the diet, behavior and morphological function of the organism to predict the role of an organism with a community. Partitioning of resources within a community can often be determined by the degree of plasticity or degree of specialization used in resource acquisition by the members. This research studies the feeding ecology, behavior and function of a trophic generalist, spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias, and a trophic specialist, smooth-hounds Mustelus canis, from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island to …
