Illuminating A Cross-Cultural Leadership Challenge: When Identity Groups Collide, Donna Chrobot-Mason, Marian N. Ruderman, Todd J. Weber, Patricia J. Ohlott, Maxine A. Dalton

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

When societal conflicts between social identity groups spill over into organizations, leaders face the formidable challenge of attempting to bridge differences and manage the conflict in order to accomplish work. After reviewing the literature on intergroup conflict, workplace diversity and social identity theory, we examine four potential leadership strategies for managing identity-based conflicts. The four leadership strategies are decategorization, recategorization, subcategorization and crosscutting. Examples drawn from an interview-based study are used to illustrate theoretical constructs found in the literature. We then consider each of these strategies in cross-cultural contexts and generate propositions to reflect differences in the effectiveness of the …

2006 Michigan Dairy Farm Business Analysis Summary, Eric Wittenberg, Christopher Wolf Nov 2007

2006 Michigan Dairy Farm Business Analysis Summary, Eric Wittenberg, Christopher Wolf

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

This report summarizes the financial and production records of 139 dairy farms from throughout Michigan in 2006. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from milk and dairy animal sales. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and the Farm Credit Service system in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. The farms are larger than would be the average of all dairy farms in Michigan. While considerable variation in the data exists, average values are reported in the summary tables and discussion that follows.

Simultaneous Depolymerization And Decolorization Of Chitosan By Ozone Treatment, S. Seo, J. M. King, W. Prinyawiwatkul Nov 2007

Simultaneous Depolymerization And Decolorization Of Chitosan By Ozone Treatment, S. Seo, J. M. King, W. Prinyawiwatkul

Faculty Publications

Currently, depolymerization and decolorization of chitosan are achieved by chemical or enzymatic methods, which are time consuming and expensive. Ozone has been shown to be able to degrade macromolecules and remove pigments due to its high oxidation potential. In this study, the effects of ozone treatment on depolymerization and decolorization of chitosan were investigated. Crawfish chitosan was ozonated in water and acetic acid solution for 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 min at room temperature with 12 wt% gas. In this study, the effects of ozone treatment on depolymerization and decolorization of chitosan were investigated by measuring the molecular weight, …

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Fourteen years have passed since the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, during which an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 (or more) Tutsis and moderate Hutus died at the hands of extremists Hutus. Rwanda is still in the process of recovering from the genocide, which not only resulted in vicious and mass murder but virtually destroyed the country’s infrastructure. Like any nation reconstituting itself in the aftermath of genocide, Rwanda is experiencing growing pains. Survivors continue to suffer the ill effects of what they were subjected to, witnessed, and lost. Many of the women who were raped now have AIDS. Those who gave birth …

Ordinariness And Orders: Explaining Popular Participation In The Rwandan Genocide, Lars Waldorf Nov 2007

Ordinariness And Orders: Explaining Popular Participation In The Rwandan Genocide, Lars Waldorf

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The most troubling and perplexing aspect of the Rwandan Genocide is why so many joined the killings so quickly. This participation seems even less comprehensible given the violence’s terrifying intimacy: ordinary killers often turned on their Tutsi neighbors and family members, using machetes and other everyday tools. Searching for answers, journalists and even some scholars have clutched at comforting metaphors and mono-causal explanations: a ‘‘blood orgy,’’ tribalism, ethnic hatred, hate radio, a ‘‘culture of obedience,’’ structural violence, and ‘‘conspiracy to murder.’’ With bracing clarity and scrupulous fairness, Scott Straus painstakingly demolishes these simplistic notions and sets a new standard for …

Book Review: African Rights, With Photographs By Jenny Matthews. Father Wenceslas Munyeshyaka: In The Eyes Of The Survivors Of Sainte Famille, Samuel Totten

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The headline of the 21 July 2007 edition of the New Times (billed as ‘‘Rwanda’s First Daily’’) reads, ‘‘Genocidaires Munyeshyaka, Bucyibaruta Are Finally Arrested.’’ In the article itself, journalist James Munyaneza reports the following: Munyeshyaka, who was until his arrest an active priest, was last November sentenced by Rwanda’s Military Tribunal to life imprisonment in absentia for his role in the slaughter of over 200 people at St[e]. Famille Parish, St. Paul Pastoral Centre and CELA [Centre for the Teaching of African Languages] in Kigali during the 1994 Genocide. Rwanda has for the last decade been calling on France to …

Book Review: African Rights, With Photographs By Jenny Matthews. Resisting Genocide: Bisesero, April–June 1994, Samuel Totten

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

For the survivors of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, what took place at Bisesero constitutes their Musa Dagh and their Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. It was there—across a range of rugged hillsides in Kibuye—that an estimated 50,000 people, primarily Tutsi, heroically attempted to resist a three-month-long onslaught of mayhem and killing by thousands of well-armed ge ́nocidaires.

The First Two Years Of Housing First In Quincy, Massachusetts: "This Place Gives Me Peace, Happiness, And Hope", Tatjana Meschede

Center for Social Policy Publications

Housing First is a housing and support services program that attempts to move the most disabled homeless people directly to housing prior to treatment, using housing as the transforming element to support participation in treatment. This approach does not require sobriety or participation in long-term treatment programs unlike the traditional continuum of care approach. Promising results have been demonstrated in a number of projects using this model (Tsemberis & Eisenberg, 2000).

For the past ten years, Father Bill’s Place (FBP), a homeless shelter and housing program in Quincy, Massachusetts, has moved steadily towards providing permanent housing with supportive services, rather …

Yeast prions are a group of non-Mendelian genetic elements transmitted as altered and self-propagating conformations. Extensive studies in the last decade have provided valuable information on the mechanisms responsible for yeast prion propagation. How yeast prions are formed de novo and what cellular factors are required for determining prion "strains" or variants--a single polypeptide capable of existing in multiple conformations to result in distinct heritable phenotypes--continue to defy our understanding. We report here that Sse1, the yeast ortholog of the mammalian heat-shock protein 110 (Hsp110) and a nucleotide exchange factor for Hsp70 proteins, plays an important role in regulating [PSI+] …

Relative Contributions Of Enterococcus Faecalis Og1rf Sortase-Encoding Genes, Srta And Bps (Srtc), To Biofilm Formation And A Murine Model Of Urinary Tract Infection, Kelvin D Kemp, Kavindra V Singh, Sreedhar R Nallapareddy, Barbara E Murray Nov 2007

Relative Contributions Of Enterococcus Faecalis Og1rf Sortase-Encoding Genes, Srta And Bps (Srtc), To Biofilm Formation And A Murine Model Of Urinary Tract Infection, Kelvin D Kemp, Kavindra V Singh, Sreedhar R Nallapareddy, Barbara E Murray

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Deletion mutants of the two sortase genes of Enterococcus faecalis OG1RF were constructed. srtC (renamed here bps for biofilm and pilus-associated sortase) was previously shown to be necessary for the production of Ebp pili and important for biofilm formation and endocarditis. Here, we report that a srtA deletion mutant showed a small (5%) yet significant (P = 0.037) reduction in biofilm relative to OG1RF, while a DeltasrtA Deltabps double mutant showed a much greater reduction (74% versus OG1RF and 44% versus the Deltabps mutant). In a murine urinary tract infection (UTI), the 50% infective doses of both the DeltasrtA Deltabps …

Evidence Of The Lack Of Effectiveness Of Low-Income Savings Incentives, Julia M. Camp, Teresa Stephenson, Stacy R. Wade Nov 2007

Evidence Of The Lack Of Effectiveness Of Low-Income Savings Incentives, Julia M. Camp, Teresa Stephenson, Stacy R. Wade

Financial Services Forum Publications

In view of the government’s propensity to develop programs to encourage savings, we examine a group of individuals to whom these programs are targeted: low- to moderate-income taxpayers. We show that saving for retirement is not a priority in the lives of these taxpayers. The low priority given to saving is often due to immediate necessary costs such as housing, food, and transportation. However, our study shows that even nonessential items and activities such as cable and internet services or travel are often considered more important than saving. We also show that most of the participants were not even aware …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Affective Interaction In Chronic Pain Couples, Ayna B. Johansen, Annmarie Cano Nov 2007

A Preliminary Investigation Of Affective Interaction In Chronic Pain Couples, Ayna B. Johansen, Annmarie Cano

Psychology Faculty Research Publications

The objective of this preliminary study was to examine the extent to which affective marital interaction related to depressive symptoms in persons with chronic pain and their spouses and to pain severity in persons with pain. Couples from the community completed self-report surveys and engaged in a videotaped conversation on a topic of mutual disagreement that was coded for three affect types (i.e., anger/contempt, sadness, humor). Humor was positively related to marital satisfaction in both partners. Spouse anger/contempt and sadness were positively related to depressive symptoms in spouses. Several significant interaction effects between couple pain status (i.e., whether one or …

Probability Coverage And Interval Length For Welch’S And Yuen’S Techniques: Shift In Location, Change In Scale, And (Un)Equal Sizes, S. Jonathan Mends-Cole Nov 2007

Probability Coverage And Interval Length For Welch’S And Yuen’S Techniques: Shift In Location, Change In Scale, And (Un)Equal Sizes, S. Jonathan Mends-Cole

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Coverage for Welch’s technique was less than the confidence-level when size was inversely proportional to variance and skewness was extreme. Under negative kurtosis, coverage for Yuen’s technique was attenuated. Under skewness and heteroscedasticity, coverage for Yuen’s technique was more accurate than Welch’s technique.

Global Measure Of The Deviation Of A Wavelet Density Estimator, Kussiy K. Alyass

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A wavelet estimator f*(x) of an unknown probability density function f(x)∈L2(R) is considered. A conditional central limit theorem for martingales is used to show that ∫([f *(x) − f (x)]^2)dx is asymptotically normally distributed. Results obtained can be used in a test of goodness-of-fit.

A Modified X̄ Control Chart For Samples Drawn From Finite Populations, Michael B. C. Khoo Nov 2007

A Modified X̄ Control Chart For Samples Drawn From Finite Populations, Michael B. C. Khoo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The X̄ chart works well under the assumption of random sampling from infinite populations. However, many process monitoring scenarios may consist of random sampling from finite populations. A modified X̄ chart is proposed in this article to solve the problems encountered by the standard X̄ chart when samples are drawn from finite populations.

Generalized Linear Mixed-Effects Models For The Analysis Of Odor Detection Data, Sandra Hall, Matthew S. Mayo, Xu-Feng Niu, James C. Walker Nov 2007

Generalized Linear Mixed-Effects Models For The Analysis Of Odor Detection Data, Sandra Hall, Matthew S. Mayo, Xu-Feng Niu, James C. Walker

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Olfactory detection has become a science of interest. Seven individuals’ odor detection abilities are explored and an attempt is made to characterize all subjects with one generalized linear mixed effects model. Two methods of fitting the models were used and simulations were conducted to discover which method yielded the best results.

Operating Characteristics Of The Dif Mimic Approach Using Jöreskog’S Covariance Matrix With Ml And Wls Estimation For Short Scales, Michaela N. Gelin, Bruno D. Zumbo Nov 2007

Operating Characteristics Of The Dif Mimic Approach Using Jöreskog’S Covariance Matrix With Ml And Wls Estimation For Short Scales, Michaela N. Gelin, Bruno D. Zumbo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Type I error rate of a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach for investigating differential item functioning (DIF) in short scales was studied. Muthén’s SEM model for DIF was examined using a covariance matrix (Jöreskog, 2002). It is conditioned on the latent variable, while testing the effect of the grouping variable over-and-above the underlying latent variable. Thus, it is a multiple-indicators, multiple-causes (MIMIC) DIF model. Type I error rates were determined using data reflective of short scales with ordinal item response formats typically found in the social and behavioral sciences. Results indicate Type I error rates for the DIF MIMIC model, …

Relative Pareto Minimizers To Multiobjective Problems: Existence And Optimality Conditions, Truong Q. Bao, Boris S. Mordukhovich Nov 2007

Relative Pareto Minimizers To Multiobjective Problems: Existence And Optimality Conditions, Truong Q. Bao, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

In this paper we introduce and study enhanced notions of relative Pareto minimizers to constrained multiobjective problems that are defined via several kinds of relative interiors of ordering cones and occupy intermediate positions between the classical notions of Pareto and weak Pareto efficiency/minimality. Using advanced tools of variational analysis and generalized differentiation, we establish the existence of relative Pareto minimizers to general multiobjective problems under a refined version of the subdifferential Palais-Smale condition for set-valued mappings with values in partially ordered spaces and then derive necessary optimality conditions for these minimizers (as well as for conventional efficient and weak efficient …
