In January 2007, only 5% of the 119 head coaches in Division I-A college football teams were minorities. This number is startling in light of the fact that in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football teams 55% of the student-athletes are from minority groups. Even the president of the NCAA, Myles Brand, has stated that this organization has had a “dismal record of hiring people of color into head coaching positions, especially in the sport of football.” The disparity between the numbers of coaches and players has prompted an action brought by the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA). The BCA …

Data Points And Duration For Estimating Fuel Consumption Of A Lpg Engine, John A. Hogan, Dennis G. Watson, Tony V. Harrison
Data Points And Duration For Estimating Fuel Consumption Of A Lpg Engine, John A. Hogan, Dennis G. Watson, Tony V. Harrison
Articles
Accurate measurement of fuel consumption is critical in quantifying the efficiency of an engine or predicting emissions. As part of a larger project, accurate instantaneous fuel consumption data was needed for a Ford LPG engine. A detailed review of literature did not provide clear recommendations on the number of data points or time duration for data collection. To provide a research basis for the number of data points and the duration of data collection, fuel consumption tests were conducted using up to 15 data points of percent fuel rate and up to 12 minutes of data collection. Based on analysis …

Vanquishing Evil Without The Help Of God: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And A World Come Of Age, Richard Grigg Ph.D.
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
One of the most distinctive religious features of the 1960s was the death of God theology. It is useful to look back at the death of God movement from the perspective of communication studies. After all, the movement received unprecedented coverage in the popular media. More intriguing, however is the specific fashion in which death of God theologian William Hamilton, one of the most influential figures in the discussion of the death of God, referred to particular aspects of the modern communication environment. According to Hamilton, the communication technologies of the 1960s helped make it a world "come of age." …

It is my great honor to deliver the Earl F. Nelson lecture for the year 2007. I have never met Mr. Nelson, but I have looked at the roster of distinguished people who have spoken in this lecture series, and I am pleased to have my name added to such an august list. I would also like to add my tribute to Dale Whitman, to whom this Conference has been dedicated. I regard him as a one-man version of Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, a reference to - for those of you who remember - the old Army teams from …
Real Estate Practice In The Twenty-First Century, Ann M. Burkhart
Real Estate Practice In The Twenty-First Century, Ann M. Burkhart
Missouri Law Review
The next century will bring profound changes in real estate law and in the ways that it is practiced. This prediction may seem rather unremarkable for any area of law or for almost any other area of human endeavor. But the changes in real estate law will be exceptional because of their relative rapidity and comprehensiveness. Real estate law, perhaps more than any other area, has changed very slowly since the beginning of the common law legal system. The mortgage, which will be the engine for this century's developments, is a particularly striking example of this slow rate of evolution.' …

Trust And Community: The Common Interest Community As Metaphor And Paradox, Paula A. Franzese, Steven Siegel
Missouri Law Review
This Article explores the power of trust to shape where we live and how we live. It aims to provide a new set of first principles to reshape the common interest community (CIC) paradigm, so that the promise of social trust, rather than control and punishment, can enhance the cultural and economic success of this Goliath of residential living.

From One Pocket To The Other: The Abuse Of Real Estate Investment Trusts Deductions, Jennifer Stonecipher
Missouri Law Review
Many large, multi-state retailers and banks have been acting as their own landlord by paying rent to themselves. Sophisticated corporate tax strategists have employed a method of avoiding state taxes by using a real estate investment trust (REIT) to "own" its real estate. The retailer or bank then pays rent to the REIT, which then turns the money over to a holding company. The rent money ends up back in the hands of the corporate parent, without being subject to state income tax along the way. Although this tax loophole has been closed by the federal government, the strategy is …
Self-Organization Of Scroll Waves In Excitable Media : Parallel Simulations On A 64-Opteron Linux Cluster, Igor Kaplun
Self-Organization Of Scroll Waves In Excitable Media : Parallel Simulations On A 64-Opteron Linux Cluster, Igor Kaplun
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Spiral waves have been observed and studied in a variety of biological, physical and chemical systems, known as excitable media. The most famous examples of excitable media include cardiac tissue, the Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical reaction, and aggregation of starving slime mold amoeba.
It had been shown previously that spiral waves could self-organize into multi- armed spirals. A 3D analog of a 2D spiral wave is called a scroll wave. It rotates around a 1D imaginary tube known as a filament. A later study based on the so-called Puschino model has reported formation of multi-armed scroll waves in 3D. But a question …

Revolutionary Peacemaking: Using A Critical Pedagogy Approach For Peacemaking With "Terrorists", Steven Best, Peter Mclaren, Anthony J. Nocella Ii
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"The current global political atmosphere is steeped in fear of, and intense rhetoric about, political violence and "terrorism." Amidst this turbulent environment, it is clear that scholars and practitioners need to get beyond the manufactured fear and the hysterical rhetoric, peddled by what we call the corporate-state-military-media complex (or simply, the "power complex"), and instead seek a deeper understanding of political groups that defend or deploy the tactics of economic sabotage (property destruction) or armed struggle in order to change repressive and violent social structures (Best and Nocella 2004; Best and Nocella 2006). Such understanding is important to slow down …

Defusing The Bomb: The Scope Of The Federal Explosives Statute, Peter Moreno
Defusing The Bomb: The Scope Of The Federal Explosives Statute, Peter Moreno
Washington Law Review
A federal statute, 18 U.S.C. § 844(h)(2) (2000), imposes a mandatory ten-year term of imprisonment on anyone who "carries an explosive during the commission of any felony which may be prosecuted in a court of the United States." The United States Courts of Appeals are split over whether the statute must be read to include a relational element such that the crime is carrying explosives in relation to another felony. The Third, Fifth, and Sixth Circuits have rejected the notion that the statute contains such an implicit limitation. In contrast, the Ninth Circuit recently held that the application of § …

Regulation of global networks, human rights concerns, the effect of violence on children, and the regulatory authority of bodies like the WTO are also issues that no country can ignore. These topics in particular are highlighted in the 9th volume of the San Diego International Law Journal. However, like the subprime mortgage crisis, they are but a few of the important international issues facing the world.

Imagining Cannibals: European Encounters With Native Brazilian Women, Carole Myscofski
Scholarship
In his “Introduction” to Imagining Religion, Jonathan Z. Smith contends that second-order reflection on religion—imagining religion per se—is a relatively recent human endeavor.1 It is one, of course, that has engaged our group of essayists—indeed, as our life’s work and preoccupation. It is also the issue at stake in this essay: how human behaviors and groups are distinguished and labeled.

Slayers And Soldiers: The Validity And Scope Of The Slayer's Rule Under The Family Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Act, Rebecca Blasco
Slayers And Soldiers: The Validity And Scope Of The Slayer's Rule Under The Family Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Act, Rebecca Blasco
Washington Law Review
The "slayer's rule"—a common law doctrine—precludes a murderer from financially benefiting from the victim's death by denying him or her the right to proceeds from the victim's life insurance policy. Some jurisdictions have extended this rule to disqualify the slayer's exclusive family members from receiving the victim's insurance proceeds as beneficiaries. Exclusive family members are those either not related to the victim or related to the victim only by marriage. The slayer's rule applies to federal group life insurance policies, such as the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Act (SGLI), which provides life insurance to servicemembers. Spouses and dependent children of …

Purpose: One third of hemodialysis patients have high serum ferritin levels and low transferrin saturation (TSAT). The purpose of this analysis was to determine the cost effectiveness of administering 1g of sodium ferric gluconate complex (SFGC: also referred to as ferric gluconate) to patients with serum ferritin >500ng/mL and TSAT ≤25% based on the Dialysis Patients Response to IV Iron with Elevated Ferritin (DRIVE) study and its 6-week observational extension (DRIVE-II). In these studies, IV iron administration resulted in reduced epoetin requirements.
Methods: Decision analysis was performed using a time horizon of 12 weeks, consistent with the combined duration of …
Macroscopic Consequences Of Calcium Signaling In Microdomains: A First-Passage-Time Approach, Robert Rovetti
Macroscopic Consequences Of Calcium Signaling In Microdomains: A First-Passage-Time Approach, Robert Rovetti
Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works
Calcium (Ca) plays an important role in regulating various cellular processes. In a variety of cell types, Ca signaling occurs within microdomains where channels deliver localized pulses of Ca activating a nearby collection of Ca-sensitive receptors. The small number of channels involved ensures that the signaling process is stochastic. The aggregate response of several thousand of these microdomains yields a whole-cell response which dictates the cell behavior. Here, we study the statistical properties of a population of these microdomains in response to a trigger signal. We use a first-passage-time approach to show analytically how Ca release in the whole cell …
