Philosophical Foundations For Clinical Supervision Within A Christian Worldview, Rodger K. Bufford Nov 2007

Philosophical Foundations For Clinical Supervision Within A Christian Worldview, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Supervision has increasingly become a focus of psychological theory and research in recent years. However, exploration of the implications of a Christian worldview for supervision remains largely neglected. Domains of a worldview are outlined and illustrated with examples of distinctive Christian worldview beliefs. Philosophical implications and practice implications of a Christian worldview are discussed. Specif- ically, a Christian worldview can be addressed with regard to the means, motives, and goals of supervi- sion. Examples of how a Christian perspective can also influence the personal life of supervisees and supervisors are also highlighted.

Reversal Of Spin Polarization In Fe/Gaas (001) Driven By Resonant Surface States: First-Principles Calculations, Athanasios N. Chantis, Kirill D. Belashchenko, D. L. Smith, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Mark Van Schilfgaarde, R. C. Albers

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

A minority-spin resonant state at the Fe/GaAs(001) interface is predicted to reverse the spin polarization with the voltage bias of electrons transmitted across this interface. Using a Green's function approach within the local spin-density approximation, we calculate the spin-dependent current in a Fe/GaAs/Cu tunnel junction as a function of the applied bias voltage. We find a change in sign of the spin polarization of tunneling electrons with bias voltage due to the interface minority-spin resonance. This result explains recent experimental data on spin injection in Fe/GaAs contacts and on tunneling magnetoresistance in Fe/GaAs/Fe magnetic tunnel junctions.

Cerebrospinal Fluid And Serum Biomarkers Of Cerebral Malaria Mortality In Ghanaian Children, Winston Anderson Nov 2007

Cerebrospinal Fluid And Serum Biomarkers Of Cerebral Malaria Mortality In Ghanaian Children, Winston Anderson

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Plasmodium falciparum can cause a diffuse encephalopathy known as cerebral malaria (CM), a major contributor to malaria associated mortality. Despite treatment, mortality due to CM can be as high as 30% while 10% of survivors of the disease may experience short- and long-term neurological complications. The pathogenesis of CM and other forms of severe malaria is multi-factorial and appear to involve cytokine and chemokine homeostasis, inflammation and vascular injury/repair. Identification of prognostic markers that can predict CM severity will enable development of better intervention.Postmortem serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were obtained within 2-4 hours of death in Ghanaian children …

Perinatal Ph And Neuropsychological Outcomes At Age 3 Years In Children Born Preterm: An Exploratory Study, Kimberly A. Espy, Theresa E. Senn, David A. Charak, Jill Tyler, Sandra A. Wiebe Nov 2007

Perinatal Ph And Neuropsychological Outcomes At Age 3 Years In Children Born Preterm: An Exploratory Study, Kimberly A. Espy, Theresa E. Senn, David A. Charak, Jill Tyler, Sandra A. Wiebe

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

The impact of extreme prematurity and related hypoxic-ischemic events on brain development recently has begun to be characterized with modern neuroimaging methods, although comparatively less is known about the neuropathology in those born at heavier birth weights. Even subclinical levels of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia, as indexed by perinatal blood pH, are related to intelligence in school-aged children born preterm. Given the impact of hypoxia-ischemia on white matter and the emerging evidence of specific executive and mathematic deficits in children born preterm, the impact of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia on these outcomes was explored in children at relatively low-risk for sequelae. In a sample …

A Bayesian Multilevel Modeling Approach For Data Query In Wireless Sensor Networks, H. Wang, H. Fang, K. A. Espy, D. Peng, H. Sharif Nov 2007

A Bayesian Multilevel Modeling Approach For Data Query In Wireless Sensor Networks, H. Wang, H. Fang, K. A. Espy, D. Peng, H. Sharif

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

In power-limited Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), it is important to reduce the communication load in order to achieve energy savings. This paper applies a novel statistic method to estimate the parameters based on the realtime data measured by local sensors. Instead of transmitting large real-time data, we proposed to transmit the small amount of dynamic parameters by exploiting both temporal and spatial correlation within and between sensor clusters. The temporal correlation is built on the level-1 Bayesian model at each sensor to predict local readings. Each local sensor transmits their local parameters learned from historical measurement data to their cluster …

Thermal Effects Of Phase Transformations: A Review, Alexander Umantsev Nov 2007

Thermal Effects Of Phase Transformations: A Review, Alexander Umantsev

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Working Papers

All the stages of phase transformations in materials, nucleation, growth, and coarsening, are subject to thermal effects that stem from the redistribution of energy in the system, like release of latent heat, and heat conduction. The thermal effects change the rate and outcome of the transformation and may result in the appearance of unusual states or phases, in particular in nanosystems. This review will cover the attempts of researchers to build a comprehensive theory of thermal effects in different phase transformations. Although the dynamical Ginzburg–Landau (continuum) approach will be used for the analysis of the effects, they are robust and …

Fine-Resolution Climate Projections Enhance Regional Climate Change Impact Studies, Edwin P. Maurer, Levi Brekke, Tom Pruitt, Philip P. Duffy Nov 2007

Fine-Resolution Climate Projections Enhance Regional Climate Change Impact Studies, Edwin P. Maurer, Levi Brekke, Tom Pruitt, Philip P. Duffy

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

A new data set enhances the abilities of researchers and decision-makers to assess possible future climates, explore societal impacts, and approach policy responses from a risk-based perspective. The data set, which consists of a library of 112 fine-resolution climate projections, based on 16 climate models and three greenhouse gas emissions scenarios, is now publicly available. Monthly climate projections from 1950 to 2099 were downscaled to a spatial resolution of 1/8° (about 140 square kilometers per grid cell) covering the conterminous United States and portions of Canada and Mexico.

Discovery Of Polarization Reverberation In Ngc 4151, C. Martin Gaskell, René W. Goosmann, Nelly I. Merkulova, Nikolay M. Shakhovskoy, Masatoshi Shoji

C. Martin Gaskell Publications

Observations of the optical polarization of NGC 4151 in 1997–2003 show variations of an order of magnitude in the polarized flux while the polarization position angle remains constant. The amplitude of variability of the polarized flux is comparable to the amplitude of variability of the total U-band flux, except that the polarized flux follows the total flux with a lag of 8±3 days. The time lag and the constancy of the position angle strongly favor a scattering origin for the variable polarization rather than a non-thermal synchrotron origin. The orientation of the position angle of the polarized flux (parallel to …

Created Facts And The Flawed Ontology Of Copyright Law, Justin Hughes Nov 2007

Created Facts And The Flawed Ontology Of Copyright Law, Justin Hughes

Notre Dame Law Review

It is black letter doctrine that facts are not copyrightable: facts are discovered, not created—so they will always lack the originality needed for copyright protection. As straightforward as this reasoning seems, it is fundamentally flawed. Using the “social facts” theory of philosopher John Searle, this Article explores a variety of “created facts” cases—designation systems, systematic evaluations, and privately written laws—in which original expression from private individuals is adopted by social convention and generates facts in our social reality. In the course of this discussion, the paper places facts in their historical and philosophical context, explores how courts conflate facts with …

Optimization Of Electrostatic Interactions In Protein-Protein Complexes, Kelly Brock, Kemper Talley, Kacey Coley, Petras Kundrotas, Emil Alexov

Publications

In this article, we present a statistical analysis of the electrostatic properties of 298 protein-protein complexes and 356 domain-domain structures extracted from the previously developed database of protein complexes (ProtCom, http://www.ces.clemson.edu/compbio/protcom). For each structure in the dataset we calculated the total electrostatic energy of the binding and its two components, Coulombic and reaction field energy. It was found that in a vast majority of the cases (>90%), the total electrostatic component of the binding energy was unfavorable. At the same time, the Coulombic component of the binding energy was found to favor the complex formation while …
