Allopolyploids Of The Genus Elymus (Triticeae, Poaceae): A Phylogenetic Perspective, Roberta J. Mason-Gamer
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The wheat tribe, Triticeae, includes many genomically distinct polyploid taxa. Elymus is an entirely allopolyploid genus, with all species containing the St genome of Pseudoroegneria. The St genome may be combined with one or more distinct genomes representing multiple, diverse diploid donors from throughout the tribe. This study includes a simultaneous phylogenetic analysis of new and previously published data from several distinct Elymus groups, including North American and Eurasian StStHH tetraploids, in which the H genome is derived from Hordeum, Eurasian StStYY tetraploids, in which the Y genome is derived from an unknown donor, and a putative StStStStHH …

Molecular Phylogenetics Of Bromus (Poaceae: Pooideae) Based On Chloroplast And Nuclear Dna Sequence Data, Jeffery M. Saarela, Paul M. Peterson, Ryan M. Keane, Jacques Cayouette, Sean W. Graham

We conducted a phylogenetic analysis to characterize relationships among Bromus and test the monophyly of five of the seven morphologically distinct groups within Bromus (Poaceae: Pooideae) that have been treated as sections, subgenera, or genera. We sequenced the chloroplast trnL (UAA) intron, the 3'-end of the chloroplast ndhF gene, and the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA region for 46 species that represent a large proportion of the morphological and geographical diversity in the genus. Independent analyses of plastid and nuclear ribosomal data identified several lineages in Bromus, but there is some evidence of …

Dicliny In Bouteloua (Poaceae: Chloridoideae): Implications For The Evolution Of Dioecy, Michael S. Kinney, J. Travis Columbus, Elizabeth A. Friar
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The New World grass genus Bouteloua (Chloridoideae: Cynodonteae) comprises 57 species, 13 of which produce unisexual spikelets and hence are diclinous. Andromonoecy, gynodioecy, monoecy, trimonoecy, and dioecy all occur in the genus, and ten species are known to express more than one of these breeding systems. Employing a phylogenetic estimate based on parsimony analysis of DNA sequences from the ITS (nrDNA) and trnL–F (cpDNA) regions representing 35 species of Bouteloua, including ten of 13 diclinous species, we used parsimony character state reconstructions to investigate the evolution of unisexual spikelets and breeding systems. Plastic cards have invaded the monetary market as a payment instrument used to purchase goods and services. There are several types of plastic cards in the circulation namely, credit cards, debit cards, charge cards, stored value cards and smart cards. The first credit card used to eliminate the need to carry cash was the Mobil Oil, USA card issued in 1914 and the first form of charge card was the Diners card, which was used by businessmen in the 1950's to purchase meals on an expense account. It has been five years since UM implemented ISO Quality Management System for all its process. However to date no systematic evaluation is done to quantify the effectiveness of the implementation for many processes. Purchasing supplies are one of the point emphasized in ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System and it is covered under clause 7.4. In this paper the authors evaluate the effectiveness of implementing ISO clauses for purchasing equipments, chemicals, consumables and services. Molecular methods for rapid detection and differentiation of serogroups(A, B, D and Untypeables)of Pasteurella muliocida (PM) isolated from 1996 to 2004 in Malaysia were studied. A total of 125 strains were isolated from different domestic animal species (cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, dogs and cats), avian species (chickens, ducks and turkeys) and wild animals such as deer, tigers, orang-utan (primates, Pangopygmaeus) and marmosets. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) serotyping was 100% species-specific, more robust, accurate and highly specific in differentiating serogroups of P. multocida. All the P. multocida strains exhibited drug resistance against triple-sulfonamides and streptomycin and were sensitive to …

Preliminary Investigations Of The Endoparasite Component Communities Of Stray Cats From Kuala Lumpur, S.A.A. Syed-Khalil, S.N. Mohd Zain

Investigations into the endoparasite fauna of stray cats from Kuala Lumpur were carried out to determine the present population and diversity. Post-mortem examinations of selected organ from 85 cats revealed that 87.1% cats harbored endoparasites, with an average of 36.65 worms per infected cat. Endoparasite recovered consists of five nematode species (Toxocara catti, Toxocara malayensis, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, Ancylostoma braziiiensie and Strongyloides sp.), two cestode species (Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaformis) and one trematode species (Platynosomum fastosum). Toxocara sp. was shown to have the highest prevalence and mean intensity values. Present observations provided additional insights to the environment, behavior and diet …

Micro-level instructional design refers to the practice of designing and producing small units of instruction. At the microlevel processes such as shifting focus to small-scale design, applying learning theory, managing the technology, and evaluating the micro-design are implemented. The shift in focus to small-scale design centers attention on design of the multimedia products implemented in the online classroom. Theories of multimedia learning are selected and applied to the micro-level design to maximize the potential for effective instructional communication and learning. Managing the technology involves accounting for issues of compression, file size, and appropriate format for Web-based delivery. Evaluation, supported by …
