Prognosis Of Hospitalized New-Onset Systolic Heart Failure In Indo-Asians--A Lethal Problem, Fahim H. Jafary, Mahesh Kumar, Irfan E. Chandna

Background: Systolic heart failure (SHF), particularly when requiring hospital admission carries a poor prognosis. There is a paucity of data in Indo-Asians on outcomes of SHF, among whom the burden of cardiovascular disease is consistently rising. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and predictors of mortality and morbidity amongst patients admitted with new-onset SHF at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan.

Methods and Results: Hospital charts of 196 patients with a diagnosis of new or recent onset (!3 months) SHF (ejection fraction [EF] !40%) were reviewed. Patients who died during the admission, those with life-limiting concomitant …

Regulation Of D-Xylose Metabolism In Caulobacter Crescentus By A Laci-Type Repressor, Craig Stephens, Beat Christen, Kelly Watanabe, Thomas Fuchs, Urs Jenal

In the oligotrophic freshwater bacterium Caulobacter crescentus, D-xylose induces expression of over 50 genes,including the xyl operon, which encodes key enzymes for xylose metabolism. The promoter (PxylX) controllingexpression of the xyl operon is widely used as a tool for inducible heterologous gene expression in C. crescentus. We show here that PxylX and at least one other promoter in the xylose regulon (PxylE) are controlled by theCC3065 (xylR) gene product, a LacI-type repressor. Electrophoretic gel mobility shift assays showed that operator binding by XylR is greatly reduced in the presence of D-xylose. The data support the hypothesis that there is a …

Measurement of parasite proliferation in cultured red blood cells underpins many facets of malaria research, from drug sensitivity assays to assessing the impact of experimentally altered genes on parasite growth, virulence, and fitness. Pioneering efforts to grow Plasmodium falciparum in cultured red blood cells revolutionized malaria research and spurred the development of semi-high throughput growth assays using radio-labeled hypoxanthine, an essential nucleic acid precursor, as a reporter of whole-cycle proliferation (Trager and Jensen, 1976; Desjardins et al., 1979). Use of hypoxanthine (Hx) and other surrogate readouts of whole-cycle proliferation remains the dominant choice in malaria research. While amenable to high-throughput …

The major purpose of this study was to investigate failure of composite laminates with multiple unloaded holes in close proximity. The least square boundary collocation method for anisotropic materials was utilized to determine the state of stress. The approach utilized collocation on both the internal and external boundaries, making it relatively easy to implement. The method compared favorably to both published and finite element solutions. A failure prediction approach for an infinite, symmetric and balanced laminate, with two holes in close proximity was presented. Silicon chips continue to grow in capabilities, complexity and performance. Silicon chips typically integrate functional components such as logic and level two (L2) cache memory in their architecture. This functional integration of logic and memory results in improved performance of the chip. However, the integration also introduces a layer of complexity in the thermal design and management of silicon chips. Closed-form analytical solutions for laminated composite beams with tubular and rectangular cross-sections are developed for evaluating the thermal induced stresses. The derivations are based on modified lamination theory and parallel axis theorem. The present approach includes variation of ply stiffness along the contour of the cross-section. The interlaminar shear stress of cantilever composite beam with rectangular cross-section under a transverse load is analytically proved to be independent of temperature change in uniform temperature environment. Reovirus is a ubiquitous virus with demonstrated oncolytic properties. In this study, we investigate the pathways which reovirus produces a lytic infection in SV-40 transformed WI-38 cells and the noncytocidal infection of normal WI-38 cells using microarray technology. The analysis revealed that reovirus infection induced changes in 178 genes, of which 112 genes were up regulated and 66 genes down regulated. Of the 112 up regulated genes, 13 of the WI-38 2RA genes were shown to be involved in apoptosis or inhibition of cellular DNA synthesis. Of the 66 genes down regulated, seven of the WI-38 genes displayed effects involved …

Gene duplication is one of the major forces in driving genome evolution. Our study focuses on a particular retrogene Rcd-1 related (Rcd-1r) that originated through retroposition of the parental gene Required for cell differentiation 1 (Rcd-1) about 5-13 million years ago. Rcd-1r is present in D. melanogaster, D. simulans, D. sechellia and D. mauritiana whereas the parental gene is present in all the Drosophila species. The glutathione-conjugate transporter protein DNP-SG ATPase was demonstrated to be identical to the independently cloned Ral-effector, Ralbp1. Glutathione-conjugate transport is linked to substrate-stimulated ATPase activity, while GTPase stimulating activity (GAP-activity), and clathrin-coated pit-binding activity was demonstrated for this protein by different groups of investigators. The relationship between these activities and physiological functions of Ralbp1 were not clear. The present studies were designed to address the hypothesis that the ability of Ralbp1 to couple the hydrolysis of ATP with the movement of substances, i.e. its transport activity, is the crucial element that allows Ralbp1 to function as a stress-defense protein. The work presented in this thesis focuses on the development of an enantioselective and practical route form the total synthesis of villagorgin via haplosleridamine imidazole alkaloid containing β- carboline moiety by employing the well-known Pictet-Spengler and Fischer indole reactions. We approached two different ways inorder to synthesize these molecules Our first approach focused on using a Dieckmann condensation, requiring the preparation of the corresponding diester. Chapter 1 briefly overviews the field of supramolecular chemistry and highlights its horizons, also introduces the progress of sensing devices on chemical warfare agents. Chapter 2 introduces a modular approach to detect chemical warfare agent: phosgene by Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET). It combines the chemical reactivity between amines and phosgene with fluorescence properties of coumarin fluorophores, forms a fast, selective and reliable sensing system. While some historians have mentioned these racially motivated disturbances, many have failed to seriously analyze and assess these clashes, which has led to the neglect of an important source of African-American resistance to racial discrimination in the post Reconstruction era. The critical problem of CFD is perhaps an accurate approximation of derivatives for a given discrete data set. Based on our previous work on the weighted compact scheme (WCS), a uniform weighted compact / non-compact scheme (UWCNC) has been developed. Similar to WENO, three high order candidates, left, right, and central, are constructed by using Hermite polynomials. According to the smoothness, three weights are derived and assigned to each candidate. The weights will lead the scheme to be upwind-biased when approaching the shock or other discontinuities but quickly becomes central, compact, and of high order just off the shock. Therefore, …

This study developed a ductile concrete for precast wall systems which are capable of resisting high wind in excess of 500 mph. The developed concrete mix design consists of sand, cement, glass fiber, and a foaming agent to produce lightweight concrete in the range of 87 pcf (1392 kg/m3) to 90 pcf (1440 kg/m3). A comprehensive testing program for evaluation of the developed concrete material was undertaken. The mix designs were prepared both in the laboratory and in the mix truck with drum capacity of 27 ft3 (0.77 m3), and 177.6 ft3 (5 m3), respectively. The large concrete batches using …
