Metastasis is a common cause of cancer death. Tumor cells metastasized in the peritoneal organs are associated with formation of ascites in patients with advanced stages of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Previous studies show cellular clusters in ascites of EOC patients are enriched with disseminated ovarian tumor cells that exhibit invasive capability in vitro, and that cell lines derived from these cells are tumorigenic. However, little is known about the tumorigenic and metastatic capabilities of these ovarian tumor cells. Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen in humans. It typically lives as a harmless commensal as part of the human gut and skin flora, but under some conditions it causes mucosal infections. In immunocompromised patients it can also cause lifethreatening systemic infections. C. albicans is a multimorphic organism, and the ability to undergo morphological transition from budding to hyphal growth is associated with its virulence. This morphological switch was reported to be regulated by different signaling pathways. One key pathway is cAMP-PKA signaling pathway. Hydrophobic α-helices have been widely used to study membrane protein sequencestructure relationships in model membranes. Our lab has developed fluorescence methods to determine the topography of membrane-inserted hydrophobic helices, and to understand the equilibria describing their topographic stability. Using this model membrane system, the minimum hydrophobic length necessary to form a transmembrane (TM) helix in membranes was investigated. Sequences with 13 consecutive hydrophobic residues were found to be the minimum necessary to form a predominantly TM state in a bilayer with a biologically relevant width. The devastating effects of Alzheimer’s and related amyloidogenic diseases have inspired the synthesis and evaluation of numerous ligands to understand the molecular mechanism of the aggregation of the beta-amyloid peptide. Our review focuses on the current knowledge in this field with respect to molecules that have been demonstrated to interact with either oligomeric or fibrillar forms of the beta-amyloid peptide. We describe natural proteins, peptides, peptidomimetics, and small molecules that have been found to interfere with beta-amyloid aggregation. We also detail recent efforts in selecting molecules that target beta-amyloid isolated from antibody, protein, and peptide libraries. These new molecules will …

Open Markets, Competitive Democracy, And Transparent And Reliable Legal Systems: The Three Legs Of Development, James R. Jones

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In the 1990s, reform swept through Latin America. Open markets replaced closed economies. Real democracy replaced one-party rule and rigged elections. For about half of the region's population, economic and political conditions improved—yet the gap between the rich and poor widened. The poor half received little or no tangible benefits from these economic and democratic reforms. This article argues that the most difficult and probably most important reform remains to be accomplished: the reform of the legal and regulatory systems throughout Latin America. Until that happens, dreams of first-world recognition and respectability will elude Latin nations.

Financial markets in poor and middle-income countries are experiencing a fundamental shift. Until recently, most of them were shallow-to-nonexistent and closed to foreigners. Governments often had to rely on risky borrowing abroad; the private sector had even fewer options. But between 1995 and 2005, domestic debt in the emerging markets grew from $1 trillion to $4 trillion dollars. In Mexico, domestic debt went from just over twenty percent of the total government debt stock in 1995 to nearly eighty percent in 2007. In order for the corporation to engage in responsible practices, many obstacles must be overcome. One such obstacle is the belief of many managers that the corporation would be violating its fiduciary responsibility if it engaged in activities that go beyond what is required by the law. Another obstacle is that many of those practices have a real cost but are perceived not to have a corresponding tangible benefit. The article discusses and dismisses these perceived obstacles and argues that it is both through law and the workings of the market that responsible behavior can enhance society's welfare. It is …

Uncertainty And Loss In The Free Speech Rights Of Public Employees Under Garcetti V. Ceballos, Sarah F. Suma

Resolving a circuit split, the Supreme Court declared in Garcetti v. Ceballos that the First Amendment does not protect speech made pursuant to a public employee's work duties, regardless of whether the speech relates to a matter of public concern or the government's restrictions are justifiable. This article argues that a bright line rule eliminating First Amendment protection for job-duty speech is inconsistent with the theories underlying free speech protection. Further, this article explores practical drawbacks to Garcetti's bright-line rule, including inconsistent judicial determination of the scope of job duties, a disincentive to report government abuse through one's chain-of-command, …
