Punishment And Political Order, Keally D. Mcbride Jan 2007

Punishment And Political Order, Keally D. Mcbride

2019 USF Faculty and Staff Books

Most of us think of punishment as an ugly display of power. But punishment also tells us something about the ideals and aspirations of a people and their government. How a state punishes reveals whether or not it is confident in its own legitimacy and sovereignty. Punishment and Political Order examines the questions raised by the state's exercise of punitive power--from what it is about human psychology that desires sanction and order to how the state can administer pain while calling for justice. Keally McBride's book demonstrates punishment's place at the core of political administration and the stated ideals of …

Role Of Trauma In Social-Cognitive Adjustment Strategies And Moral Disengagement Among African-American Urban Youth, Kendell Lamonte Coker Jan 2007

Role Of Trauma In Social-Cognitive Adjustment Strategies And Moral Disengagement Among African-American Urban Youth, Kendell Lamonte Coker

Theses and Dissertations

The role of trauma has been implicated in the etiology of juvenile delinquency (Esbensen & Huizinga, 1991; Dulmus, 2003). This is especially pronounced among inner city minority youth. Traumatic experiences can hinder an adolescent's social-cognitive development, prevent the use of adequate coping mechanisms and cognitive processes, such as social problem solving, and lead youth to disengage their moral controls (Ng-Mak, Salzinger, Feldman, & Stueve, 2002). The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of trauma and adjustment strategies among African American urban youth and how moral disengagement can be averted via mediation by the use of social problem …

Arab Siege Of Egyptian Babylon : A Classic Study In Islamic Expansion Of The 7th Century, Paul Mitchell Love Jr. Jan 2007

Arab Siege Of Egyptian Babylon : A Classic Study In Islamic Expansion Of The 7th Century, Paul Mitchell Love Jr.

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The fall of the Byzantine Fortress of Babylon in 641ce allowed invading Arab armies to move beyond the Lower Nile region of Egypt and ultimately conquer the whole of the province from the Byzantines, effectively ending centuries of almost totally uninterrupted Roman rule. The paper examines this pivotal moment in Islamic history in order to identify four salient features of early Islamic expansion: the struggle of the early caliphate for power and authority; the role of religion; the development of an organized and effective military; the nature of early Islamic approaches to warfare and foreign policy.

The Negotiator As Professional: Understanding The Competing Interests Of A Representative Negotiator, Trevor C. W. Farrow

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This article is about lawyers as negotiators, and in particular, it is about identifying and understanding the influential and potentially competing interests that are - or at least should be - in the minds of lawyers (and potentially other third party representatives) during the overall negotiation process. While there continues to be an increasing amount of literature on the mechanics and strategies of negotiation, the underlying interests that are typically at stake in representative negotiations from the perspective of representatives - particularly negotiations involving lawyers - have not been adequately studied. Current accounts of the representative negotiator do not paint …

Managing Dynamic Complexity: Opportunities For Systems Thinking In Graduate Management Education, Vijay R. Kannan, J. B. Atwater, Alan A. Stephens

Management Faculty Publications

Competition and the time pressure to respond are adding to the challenges faced by business leaders. Managers are increasingly faced with decision-making scenarios characterised by significant dynamic complexity. While Systems Thinking (ST) tools exist to help prepare managers deal with dynamic complexity, it is not clear whether managers are in fact aware of or incorporating ST in making complex decisions. Results of a survey of faculty at the leading graduate schools of management in the USA suggest that opportunities exist to expand the awareness of ST both among faculty and the managers they are preparing. Moreover, they demonstrate a need …

Gaming The Good War: Playing World War Ii Video Games In The Shadow Of The War On Terror, Trent A. Cruz Jan 2007

Gaming The Good War: Playing World War Ii Video Games In The Shadow Of The War On Terror, Trent A. Cruz

Digitized Theses

The Second World War has become the dominant metaphor for those who would consider the War on Terror the next “Good War.” This rhetorical relationship between World War II and the War on Terror is played out daily in games that allow gamers to escape the moral ambiguity and epistemological uncertainty of contemporary conflicts by replaying a war where the cause is just, the enemies are known, and victory is assured. This thesis unpacks the various ways the World War II video games Brothers in Arms, Combat Mission, and Hearts of Iron II deal with the political and social complexities …

Army Research Needs For Automated Neuropsychological Tests: Monitoring Soldier Health And Performance Status, Karl E. Friedl, Stephen J. Grate, Susan P. Proctor, James W. Ness, Brian J. Lukey, Robert L. Kane Jan 2007

Army Research Needs For Automated Neuropsychological Tests: Monitoring Soldier Health And Performance Status, Karl E. Friedl, Stephen J. Grate, Susan P. Proctor, James W. Ness, Brian J. Lukey, Robert L. Kane

United States Army: Publications

Information on the mental status of soldiers operating at the limits of human tolerance will be vital to their management in future deployments; it may also allow earlier intervention for conditions such as undiagnosed Gulf War illnesses and Parkinson’s Disease. The Army needs a parsimonious set of neuropsychological tests that reliably identify subtle changes for: (1) early detection of individual health and military performance impairments and (2) management of occupational and deployment health risks. Testing must characterize cognitive lapses in healthy individuals faced with relevant operational stressors (i.e., anxiety, information overload, thermal strain, hypoxia, fatigue, head impact, chemical or radiation …

An In Vitro Comparative Study On The Reactivation Of Nerve Agent-Inhibited Guinea Pig And Human Acetylcholinesterases By Oximes, Chunyuan Luo, Min Tong, Nageswararao Chilukuri, Karen Brecht, Donald M. Maxwell, Ashima Saxena Jan 2007

Maxwell, Ashima Saxena

United States Army: Publications

The reactivation of nerve agent-inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by oxime is the most important step in the treatment of nerve agent poisoning. Since the evaluation of nerve agent antidotes cannot be conducted in humans, results from animal experiments are extrapolated to humans. Guinea pig is one of the animal models that is frequently used for conducting nerve agent antidote evaluations. Several investigations have demonstrated that the efficacy of an oxime primarily depends on its ability to reactivate nerve agent-inhibited AChE. If the in Vitro oxime reactivation of nerve agent-inhibited animal AChE is similar to that of human AChE, it is likely …

William Of Auvergne And Popular Demonology, Thomas De Mayo Jan 2007

William Of Auvergne And Popular Demonology, Thomas De Mayo

Quidditas

Theologian and bishop of Paris during St. Louis’ early reign, William of Auvergne (d. 1249) aimed in his life and writings to combat the myriad threats he perceived as facing Christianity. The early thirteenth century saw many potential competitors to official doctrines concerning the natural and supernatural worlds—Arabic philosophy imported into the universities, heretical attacks on the institutional church, and persistent folk beliefs and practices. William attributed these challenges to an underlying demonic conspiracy directed against humankind. This paper examines William’s treatment of popular beliefs on the Wild Hunt, a mysterious congregation of spirits, and related beliefs about female spirits …

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (Epr) In Medical Dosimetry, David A. Schauer, Akinori Iwasaki, Alexander A. Romanyukha, Harold M. Swartz, Sandro Onori Jan 2007

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (Epr) In Medical Dosimetry, David A. Schauer, Akinori Iwasaki, Alexander A. Romanyukha, Harold M. Swartz, Sandro Onori

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

This paper describes the fundamentals of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and its application to retrospective measurements of clinically significant doses of ionizing radiation. X-band is the most widely used in EPR dosimetry because it represents a good compromise between sensitivity, sample size and water content in the sample. Higher frequency bands (e.g., W and Q) provide higher sensitivity, but they are also greatly influenced by water content. L and S bands can be used for EPR measurements in samples with high water content but they are less sensitive than X-band. Quality control for therapeutic radiation facilities using X-band EPR spectrometry …

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

The objective of this paper is to present recommendations for fuels treatments in ponderosa pine forests in the Southwest, Colorado Front Range, and Black Hills of South Dakota. We have synthesized existing knowledge from the peer-reviewed literature and administrative studies and acquired local knowledge through a series of discussions with fuels treatment practitioners. We describe specific treatments, the circumstances under which they can be applied, and treatment effects. We provide recommendations related to where, how, and how often fuels treatments may be prescribed to achieve desired outcomes. Desired outcomes address social, political, economic, and ecological factors.
