Pearl Harbor In Reverse: Moral Analogies In The Cuban Missile Crisis, Dominic Tierney

Political Science Faculty Works

During the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, the argument that U.S. air strikes against Soviet missile sites in Cuba would be morally analogous to the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 had a major impact on policymaking. The invocation of this analogy contributed to President John F. Kennedy's decision to forgo an immediate attack on the missiles and to start instead with a naval blockade of the island. The "Pearl Harbor in reverse" argument is an example of an important phenomenon that has received little attention in foreign policy analysis—the moral analogy. Both in Arizona and in other jurisdictions, both in longstanding and newly implemented programs, both currently and more than a decade ago, court-connected arbitration does not appear to reduce, but also does not substantially improve, the effectiveness and efficiency of dispute resolution. It does, however, seem to increase litigants' access to a hearing. How aspects of program structure could enhance arbitration's performance warrants further study.

Relational Aggression And Burnout: Fight, Hide, Or Run?, Mary K. Culver

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This study looks al female relational aggression in an effort [0 illll~trate factors involved in sclecting appropriate responses for the situation. This ethnographic case study analyzes a principal's interview, personal journal, and artifact file to describe the situations and reactions present in a severe case offemale relational aggression. Qualitative analysis refined data into three categories of responses to relational aggression: (I) fighting or struggling to resolve issues, (2) hiding or avoiding negative situations. and en running or leaving the situation. Elements that pushed the case study toward career burnout are explored, as are clements that may have prevented burnout.

In 2001 - 2006, Republican leadership in the legislature circumvented procedural norms to implement an ideological agenda that precluded the minority party from making alternative proposals and voicing criticisms. With the Republican majority in the Senate falling to 50-50 in 2000, President Bush's assumption of office, despite having lost the popular vote, set the tone for what would become an era of illegitimate procedural reform cloaked in secrecy and deniability. Through closed-door conferences and closed-rules, Republican leadership in the House and Senate turned the clock back on civil liberties, passed unfavorable and convoluted tax cuts, and used transformed health care …

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

In this article, I intend to describe the history of terrorism, provide an explanation of some aspects of criminological theories related to the study of terrorism, and briefly articulate the link between criminology, terrorism, and homeland security. While criminology has made significant contributions in the understanding of crime in general, the literature on terrorism and homeland security by criminologists is still emerging. Arguably, this treatise calls for this void to be filled by criminologists, because terrorism and homeland security appropriately belong within the perimeters of criminology. This article employs the methodology of content analysis as used in social science research. …

The “war on terrorism,” according to Jeremy Scahill, has led to the most privatized war in the history of the United States of America: the war in Iraq, waged partially by private security contractors who are, for the most part, accountable to no higher legal-political authority. This brings us to an obvious question: Is this type of warfare an imperative part of counterterrorism?

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The Defense Department is transforming information-technology systems into a Global Information Grid (GIG) that will connect sensors to weapons systems and provide unprecedented situational awareness. The authors suggest that if not properly implemented, the GIG may overwhelm war fighters with information presented at the wrong time, at the wrong level of detail, and without proper analysis. This article proposes a model to direct the flow of information in the GIG.

The United States Navy has a continued interest in the development of High Temperature Superconductivity (HTS) to provide power dense, efficient propulsion and electrical power generation. These machines have large HTS rotor coils that will undergo many thermal cycles during the life of the ship. Thermal fatigue tests for large coils are necessary to understand any degradation and life issues that could arise. The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) has sponsored Rowan University to design and build a device that will assist in the thermal fatigue testing of a superconducting coil. Defense Horizons

This paper examines the expanding role of private contractors in modern U.S. military operations and the challenges created by their growing presence in conflict zones. As contractors assume functions once performed by military personnel, including logistics, security, training, and interrogation, existing legal, regulatory, and operational frameworks struggle to keep pace. The paper explores how privatization in the contemporary battlespace is reshaping civil-military relationships, accountability, and the laws governing armed conflict.
