It consists of observations on the characters, character analysis, a daily record of the rehearsal process, an overview of the process of developing each of the above mentioned characters, ground plans of the stage layout, a review of the play in Baton Rouge’s local newspaper The Advocate and thoughts/conclusions on the discoveries made during the experience of the play. All quotations are from the text of Mary Zimmerman’s "Metamorphoses".
Professional Theatre In The Academic Theatre Setting, Hartwell Keith Hight
Professional Theatre In The Academic Theatre Setting, Hartwell Keith Hight
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to discuss the dynamic of continued employment for the theatre instructor. Surprisingly, very little is written about continued employment for the theatre instructor. In the present study, the terms instructor and teacher carry the same meaning. Because theatre builds successful human beings, a theatre program must allows students, graduates, and other interested candidates the opportunity to work closely with experienced professionals in their field.

Camping In The Classroom: Ridiculous Theatre As Serious Drama, John Kenneth Deboer
Camping In The Classroom: Ridiculous Theatre As Serious Drama, John Kenneth Deboer
Theses and Dissertations
My first semester pursuing my MFA in Voice and Speech Pedagogy I vocal-coached an openly gay student playing a straight character who would mask his sexual identity in such a manner that his performance became stiff and uninteresting. Rather than using his personal identity as an asset in the pursuit of a successful performance, his chosen vocal tactics removed any sense of theatricality from his performance. I confronted the student and suggested such extreme vocal suppression diminished the quality of his overall performance. He replied, "So you want me to get the gay out."His use of the phrase, "get the …
Cradle To Cage: Confronting The Premature Institutionalization Of The Children Of The Incarcerated, Jen Fell
Cradle To Cage: Confronting The Premature Institutionalization Of The Children Of The Incarcerated, Jen Fell
Theses and Dissertations
American prisons are swollen and distended. Over 2 million Americans sit in jail or prison today. About 2/3 of the incarcerated are parents. They parent approximately 2 million children in America today who are separated from mom or dad because of incarceration. Their children suffer from poverty, inconsistency in caregivers, separation from siblings, reduced opportunity to health and education and increased risk for substance abuse, alcoholism and incarceration themselves. Children of the incarcerated are seven times more likely than their peers to become incarcerated as adults. Many of these children are unable to visit their parents. Over half the mothers in …
Beyond Narrative, Jacob Adam Joseph Dodd
Beyond Narrative, Jacob Adam Joseph Dodd
Theses and Dissertations
My graduate film at Virginia Commonwealth University, "Nunna Mia e la Barca," explores the traditions behind narrative and documentary film construction. With this project, my goal was to blend narrative story telling techniques - for example continuity editing - with that of documentary approaches in order to communicate the story of my Italian grandmother, Nunna, and her journey on the Andrea Doria in 1956. These documentary approaches focus more on the specific details of Nunna's American home as I have experienced them growing up. Everything in the motion picture frame has been lit, composed, rehearsed, and edited as in any …
The Pedagogy And Ethics Of Improvisation Using The Harold, David Dellus Patton
The Pedagogy And Ethics Of Improvisation Using The Harold, David Dellus Patton
Theses and Dissertations
Scenic improvisation is dramatic performance without a script. Performers develop scenes in real time in front of an audience. They do this by submitting to a set of rules of relating on-stage which allow them, by mutual assent, to develop scenes and stories based on their relationships with one another. This methodology by which improvisers develop their scenes can give us a tangible vocabulary and model by which we can fulfill the requirements of love. The Harold, an improvisational form created by Del Close and Charna Halpern and taught and performed at IO (formerly ImprovOlympic), emphasizes this relational ethic as …
The Art Of Collaboration In The Classroom: Team Teaching Performance, Jenna M. Neilsen
The Art Of Collaboration In The Classroom: Team Teaching Performance, Jenna M. Neilsen
Theses and Dissertations
The Art of Collaboration in the Classroom: Team Teaching Performance is a co-written master's thesis which records our research in the field of team teaching as it relates to theatre education at the university level. It is our intent that this text be used as a tool for helping universities and teachers decide if a collaborative teaching model is right for their courses. A portion of the text is research-based, examining the scholarly writings which have preceded our work. In Chapter 1, we compiled a set of definitions, in the hopes of codifying the language used within this document as …
Pedagogical Fusion, David Maurice White
Pedagogical Fusion, David Maurice White
Theses and Dissertations
During the five semesters that I have been at VCU I have learned a great deal from the courses that I have been enrolled in but I have learned the most through my experiences as a Teaching Assistant. These experiences have been so valuable because of the wide range of subject areas in which I have been involved and the diverse instructors that I have assisted. Although I hesitate to use the word "problem" I feel that there is a tendency in teacher training for a student to latch onto one professor and model their teaching practices after that one …
A Life In Words, Thoughts, Ideas, Images And Movement, Randy Houston Mercer
A Life In Words, Thoughts, Ideas, Images And Movement, Randy Houston Mercer
Theses and Dissertations
I know it is my core, my purest nature to incessantly question myself and everything around me; as we pertain to the universe. As Robert Wilson suggests "I will always ask 'What is it?' before telling you what it is." My goal is to present you with some tools with which to approach your craft, your life, your uncertainties. And though I may not always be the best example, I still wish to encourage all that read this or spend time with me to see this craft/business and indeed your life as a great, happy adventure; guided by love. Because …
The Constant Wife Revisited: The Progression Of A Play From Conception To The Final Stage Production, Kimberly H. Parkin
The Constant Wife Revisited: The Progression Of A Play From Conception To The Final Stage Production, Kimberly H. Parkin
Theses and Dissertations
For my thesis, I recorded the progression of my show, The Constant Wife. I discuss the conception of my original scene design as well as the changes that occurred while working with the director and other designers. Throughout the thesis, I address the problems that arose during the pre-production, what I did to rectify those situations, and what I might have done differently if given the opportunity. I have divided the thesis into the following sections Process of the Pre-Production, Execution of the Design and Evaluation of the Design. The final section of my thesis details what I learned …

Academic - Practice Bridges: Implications For Lecturers When The Complexities Of Change Meets The Higher Education And Nurse Education Systems, Adrianne Jones
Theses : Honours
Government, industry, enterprises and the community expect the Vocational and Educational Training (VET) system to provide up-to-date educational programs that provide pathways from school-based learning to the higher education facilities such as universities and to employment opportunities. Reforms in the VET sector over the past ten years have had a significant impact on the work of staff employed in the area. Educators now operate in more competitive markets and face increased demands for higher quality and more relevant training programs from clients. Understanding and keeping up with the changes and working in new and more flexible ways have been major …
Cinematography And Choreography: "It Takes Two To Tango", Laura Boynes
Cinematography And Choreography: "It Takes Two To Tango", Laura Boynes
Theses : Honours
As a practicing dancer and choreographer with a developing interest in film, the lifelong struggle (where many have gone before) to capture and accurately depict choreography on screen, intrigues me.
Who should dance the camera or the choreography? These are questions that have been pondered by choreographers and theorists for centuries, with pioneers such as Busby Berkeley and Maya Deren each finding their own answers to success.
This thesis discusses the creation and production of dance film, and the importance of movement in front of and behind the camera lens. I believe experimentation and research are the most effective methods …
A Methodology For Thorough Text Preparation Of German Lieder, Emma Louise Blake
A Methodology For Thorough Text Preparation Of German Lieder, Emma Louise Blake
Theses : Honours
The impetus behind this study is the suspicion that singers beginning their training are either unaware of the vast amount of preparation that needs to occur when performing any work or they are aware but have no idea where to start. The understanding of text and an emotional connection with its meaning are vital to a successful Lied performance. This dissertation aims to create a method of preparing the text (of a Lied) that encourages detailed observation and creative thought, and which enables a musician with limited understanding of the German language to comfortably acquaint themselves with the repertoire. This …
Notions Of Truth In Contemporary Narrative : Where The Truth Lies, Cherie Smilovitis
Notions Of Truth In Contemporary Narrative : Where The Truth Lies, Cherie Smilovitis
Theses : Honours
Creative nonfiction narratives have in recent times become increasingly popular. This thesis sets out to examine what is at the heart of the unique reading experience that creative nonfiction narratives offer readers. It begins with an analysis of various definitions of both creative nonfiction and fiction in order to establish the way, or ways in which they are held to differ or be distinguishable from one another. Though various definitions assert that there are distinct differences between fiction and creative nonfiction narratives, several make mention of occasions where the boundaries between the two may become indistinct. On such occasions, as …
Within And Without, Shane Robert Rocheleau
Within And Without, Shane Robert Rocheleau
Theses and Dissertations
Within and Without is a document which illustrates my personal and artistic research into the nature of the postmodern conception of the self: that self is unfixed, multiple, and reactive. It explicates my myriad and explorative approaches to photographic portraiture. Furthermore, it indicates many of my theoretical and artistic references and how I have applied my lessons both as an artist and a researcher to maximize the effect of my concepts within the formal and aesthetic confines of my photographs. Finally, this document explains my own beliefs concerning the nature of self and how a synthesis of my influences has …

Els Paisatges Europeus De Carles Batlle, Sharon G. Feldman
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

The First Amendment As Criminal Procedure, Daniel J. Solove
The First Amendment As Criminal Procedure, Daniel J. Solove
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This Article explores the relationship between the First Amendment and criminal procedure. These two domains of constitutional law have long existed as separate worlds, rarely interacting with each other despite the fact that many instances of government information gathering can implicate First Amendment freedoms of speech, association, and religion. The Fourth and Fifth Amendments used to provide considerable protection for First Amendment interests, as in the famous 1886 case Boyd v. United States, in which the Supreme Court held that the government was prohibited from seizing a person's private papers. Over time, however, Fourth and Fifth Amendment protection has shifted, …

Civil Liberties In Uncivil Times: The Perilous Quest To Preserve American Freedoms, Kenneth Lasson
Civil Liberties In Uncivil Times: The Perilous Quest To Preserve American Freedoms, Kenneth Lasson
All Faculty Scholarship
The perilous quest to preserve civil liberties in uncivil times is not an easy one, but the wisdom of Benjamin Franklin should remain a beacon: "Societies that trade liberty for security end often with neither." Part I of this article is a brief history of civil liberties in America during past conflicts. Part II describes various actions taken by the government to conduct the war on terrorism - including invasions of privacy, immigration policies, deportations, profiling, pre-trial detentions, and secret military tribunals. Part III analyzes the serious Constitutional questions raised by the government's actions in fighting terrorism. The thesis throughout …
