Folklore/Cinema: Popular Film As Vernacular Culture, Sharon R. Sherman, Mikel J. Koven
Folklore/Cinema: Popular Film As Vernacular Culture, Sharon R. Sherman, Mikel J. Koven
All USU Press Publications
Interest in the conjunctions of film and folklore is stronger and more diverse than ever. Documentaries on folk life and expression remain a vital genre, but scholars such as Sharon Sherman and Mikel Koven also are exploring how folklore elements appear in, and merge with, popular cinema. They look at how movies, a popular culture medium, can as well be both a medium and type of folklore, playing cultural roles and conveying meanings customarily found in other folkloric forms. They thus use the methodology of folklore studies to analyze films made for commercial distribution. The contributors to this book look …
Before The Manifesto: The Life Writings Of Mary Lois Walker Morris, Melissa Lambert Milewski
Before The Manifesto: The Life Writings Of Mary Lois Walker Morris, Melissa Lambert Milewski
All USU Press Publications
Mary Lois Walker Morris was a Mormon woman who challenged both American ideas about marriage and the U.S. legal system. Before the Manifesto provides a glimpse into her world as the polygamous wife of a prominent Salt Lake City businessman, during a time of great transition in Utah. This account of her life as a convert, milliner, active community member, mother, and wife begins in England, where her family joined the Mormon church, details her journey across the plains, and describes life in Utah in the 1880s. Her experiences were unusual as, following her first husband's deathbed request, she married …

Unit Of Luminous Flux: Mario Botta's Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel, Andreas Luescher
Unit Of Luminous Flux: Mario Botta's Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel, Andreas Luescher
Architecture and Environmental Design Faculty Publications
This paper examines the Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel (CDN), which opened in 2000, as the site of a “dialogue” between the ideas and practice of Switzerland’s best-known Italian-speaking architect and designer, Mario Botta, and the country’s best-known German-speaking playwright, Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921-1990). The CDN becomes a double portrait of two Swiss artists, separated by parole but not Sprache. Both felt peripheral to Swiss society, yet each was a product of the cantonal principle of strong regionalism aerated by the Federation’s facilitation of cosmopolitanism aligned in an environmental ecology that literally and figuratively mixed their respective media: the concrete for the …

Faculty Scholarship
Paper relies heavily on African-American newspapers and archival materials from Lincoln University and the AALL Archive to tell the story of Lincoln University Law School (1939-1955), provide biographical sketches of its African-American law librarians, and expose the racism within the American Association of Law Libraries during the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Rendering Shakespearean Rhetoric Visible In The Boydell Shakespeare Gallery, Katherine Kickel
Rendering Shakespearean Rhetoric Visible In The Boydell Shakespeare Gallery, Katherine Kickel
Quidditas

In this essay, I argue that the Boydell collection also reflects a new preference for reading Shakespeare’s plays in the eighteenth century via its editorial illustration of parts of the plays that would not normally be emphasized in theatrical productions.
