Pilot Study Of Psychopathology Among Roman Catholic Secular Clergy, Sarah Knox, Stephen G. Virginia, Jacquelyn Smith Jan 2007

Pilot Study Of Psychopathology Among Roman Catholic Secular Clergy, Sarah Knox, Stephen G. Virginia, Jacquelyn Smith

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

This pilot study gathered information regarding overall levels of psychopathology in a nationally selected, random sample of U.S. Roman Catholic secular (i.e., diocesan) priests using the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R; Derogatis, 2004). The study yielded a response rate of 45%. One-half of the participants reported marked psychological problems, with interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, and depression most strongly correlated with the instrument’s overall index of psychopathology. Four dimensional scales were elevated (i.e., obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, psychoticism), as were two indices (i.e., GSI, PST). Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Visual Layout Of Print Questionnaires: Effect On Responses Of Middle School Students, Sheri Bauman, Robert Steiner, Francesca Lopez Jan 2007

Visual Layout Of Print Questionnaires: Effect On Responses Of Middle School Students, Sheri Bauman, Robert Steiner, Francesca Lopez

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

A three-page questionnaire was modified to a one-page format. Questionnaires were administered in classroom groups to 300 middle school students. Classrooms were randomly divided into two groups, with one group receiving the original three-page format and the other receiving a single-page version of the same questionnaire. The visual layout of the two versions was different, and included variations in font, placement of response options, and spacing. Item non-response was greater for the single-page format. No statistically significant differences were detected between response patterns or internal consistency of the two versions of the questionnaire. Implications for school counselors are discussed.

Dynamic Adaptation Of Streamed Real-Time E-Learning Videos Over The Internet, Aruna Thakur Jan 2007

Dynamic Adaptation Of Streamed Real-Time E-Learning Videos Over The Internet, Aruna Thakur

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Even though the e-learning is becoming increasingly popular in the academic environment, the quality of synchronous e-learning video is still substandard and significant work needs to be done to improve it. The improvements have to be brought about taking into considerations both: the network requirements and the psycho- physical aspects of the human visual system. One of the problems of the synchronous e-learning video is that the head-and-shoulder video of the instructor is mostly transmitted. This video presentation can be made more interesting by transmitting shots from different angles and zooms. Unfortunately, the transmission of such multi-shot videos will increase …

Evolution Of Prehension Ability In An Anthropomorphic Neurorobotic Arm, G Massera Jan 2007

Evolution Of Prehension Ability In An Anthropomorphic Neurorobotic Arm, G Massera

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper, we show how a simulated anthropomorphic robotic arm controlled by an artificial neural network can develop effective reaching and grasping behaviour through a trial and error process in which the free parameters encode the control rules which regulate the fine-grained interaction between the robot and the environment and variations of the free parameters are retained or discarded on the basis of their effects at the level of the global behaviour exhibited by the robot situated in the environment. The obtained results demonstrate how the proposed methodology allows the robot to produce effective behaviours thanks to its ability …

Transparency And Determinacy In Common Law Adjudication: A Philosophical Defense Of Explanatory Economic Analysis, Jody S. Kraus Jan 2007

Transparency And Determinacy In Common Law Adjudication: A Philosophical Defense Of Explanatory Economic Analysis, Jody S. Kraus

Faculty Scholarship

Explanatory economic analysis of the common law has long been subject to deep philosophical skepticism for two reasons. First, common law decisions appear to be cast in the language of deontic morality, not the consequentialist language of efficiency. For this reason, philosophers have claimed that explanatory economic analysis cannot satisfy the transparency criterion, which holds that a legal theory's explanation must provide a plausible account of the relationship between the reasoning it claims judges actually use to decide cases and the express reasoning judges provide in their opinions. Philosophers have doubted that the economic analysis has a plausible account of …

Abortion, Equality, And Administrative Regulation, Gillian E. Metzger Jan 2007

Abortion, Equality, And Administrative Regulation, Gillian E. Metzger

Faculty Scholarship

Abortion and equality are a common pairing; courts as well as legal scholars have noted the importance of abortion and a woman's ability to control whether and when she has children to her ability to participate fully and equally in society. Abortion and administrative regulation, on the other hand, are a more unusual combination. Most restrictions on abortion are legislatively imposed, while guarantees of reproductive freedom are constitutionally derived, so administrative law does not frequently figure in debates about access to abortion.

The Law School Matrix: Reforming Legal Education In A Culture Of Competition And Conformity, Susan Sturm, Lani Guinier Jan 2007

The Law School Matrix: Reforming Legal Education In A Culture Of Competition And Conformity, Susan Sturm, Lani Guinier

Faculty Scholarship

Law school reform is in the air. Many reformers agree that the prevailing law school model developed in the nineteenth century does not adequately prepare students to become effective twenty-first century lawyers. Langdell's case method, designed around private domestic law, appellate cases, and the Socratic method, increasingly fails to teach students "how to think like a lawyer" in the world students will occupy. The curriculum over-emphasizes adjudication and discounts many of the important global, transactional, and facilitative dimensions of legal practice. Law school has too little to do with what lawyers actually do and develops too little of the institutional, …

Lawyers And Community Economic Development, William H. Simon Jan 2007

Lawyers And Community Economic Development, William H. Simon

Faculty Scholarship

The Articles in this symposium and the experiences they report show that, for lawyers, Community Economic Development (CED) has become a more expansive and more complex subject than it was when we discovered it two decades or so ago.

The Articles and the experiences are particularly revealing about what I would guess have been the two central preoccupations of lawyers in the field. The first, of course, is what we mean by community, and more specifically, how a community can become – or be regarded as – a legal and political actor. The second concerns lawyer accountability. Progressive lawyers have …

Tax Expenditures As Foreign Aid, David E. Pozen Jan 2007

Tax Expenditures As Foreign Aid, David E. Pozen

Faculty Scholarship

Few issues in global politics are as contentious as foreign aid – how much rich countries should give, in what ways, to whom. For years, it has been a commonplace that U.S. policies are stingy. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) routinely ranks the United States far behind its industrialized peers in official development assistance (ODA), measured as a percentage of gross national income (GNI). An endless parade of critics has implored the government to do more; some suggest that the Bush Administration's support for the Monterrey Consensus, which sets a goal of increasing assistance to 0.7% of …

Situational Awareness In The Marine Towing Industry, Boris Towns Jan 2007

Situational Awareness In The Marine Towing Industry, Boris Towns

Theses

Loss of situational awareness has been cited as the most common cause of accidents in the maritime industry. However, current research has not proven beneficial in determining the factors that underpin situational awareness. This study examined situational awareness among licensed captains and pilots of the inland towing industry. Twenty towboat captains, who operate on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) from New Orleans, LA to Houston, TX and who represented 16 towing vessel companies, were interviewed and participated in an integrated survey that explored fatigue, communication, dangerous drugs and alcohol, social stress, and mental workload. These factors were believed to have …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The following case study examined the existence of grade inflation at one high school in southeastern Georgia, South High School. This mixed methodology research study examined grade inflation from two major perspectives, student data and teacher data; thus, creating a quantitative and qualitative research study. Triangulation in data collection was used to gather information about 160 seniors and 76 classroom teachers, which offered greater insight into evidence and perceptions of grade inflation. The standardized test scores of students and their GPAs were correlated to determine the extent of the relationship between GPAs and SAT scores and between GPAs and End …

Exploring The Role Of Technology In The Educational Resilience Of African American Male Students, Reginald Dennis Leseane Jan 2007

Exploring The Role Of Technology In The Educational Resilience Of African American Male Students, Reginald Dennis Leseane

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

African American males, as a group, are labeled at-risk of not acquiring the basic academic and social skills needed to function in todays society. Many of these students simply drop out of school and later find themselves incarcerated in the prison system of America. Educational resilience has been identified as a key component of students that stay in school and participate in their learning. This mixed method study explores what role technology, used in educational setting, plays in the educational resilience and community formation of African American males. The study revolves around a technology infused, three phase intervention for twenty …

The Evaluation Of Contextualization Of The Life Orientation Test - Revised To Enhance Predictive Validity In Sport, Samuel Joseph Whalen Jan 2007

The Evaluation Of Contextualization Of The Life Orientation Test - Revised To Enhance Predictive Validity In Sport, Samuel Joseph Whalen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Over time and across various situations, optimistic individuals have mostly positive expectancies for future events. The Life Orientation Test - Revised (LOT-R) was designed to assess individuals global expectancies for the future as an indication of dispositional optimism; however, global assessment may include content irrelevance related to sport outcomes. The present study evaluated the inter-item preferred sport contextualization of the LOT-R to decrease attenuation and thus enhance predictive validity. College athletes (N = 423) completed an online version of a variety of questionnaires. With dispositional optimism controlled, regression analyses revealed sport optimism to explain additional variance in both general and …

Perceptions Of High School Principals In A Southeastern Urban School District On Leadership Practices And Parental Involvement, Elizabeth Chattmon Graham Jan 2007

Perceptions Of High School Principals In A Southeastern Urban School District On Leadership Practices And Parental Involvement, Elizabeth Chattmon Graham

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership practices of high school principals and parental involvement and to examine to what extent those practices differed between principals and how they related to parental involvement. The study revealed major issues surrounding parental involvement such as how principals defined parental involvement, how principals communicated the importance of parental involvement; what parental involvement activities impact student achievement; what common leadership practices influenced parental involvement; and what are some common experiences of high school principals regarding parental involvement. The methodology employed to conduct this qualitative study was face-to-face audio-taped interviews at the …

Social Memory And Evidence From The Past, Luca Anderlini, Dino Gerardi, Roger Lagunoff Jan 2007

Social Memory And Evidence From The Past, Luca Anderlini, Dino Gerardi, Roger Lagunoff

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Examples of repeated destructive behavior abound throughout the history of human societies. This paper examines the role of social memory — a society’s vicarious beliefs about the past — in creating and perpetuating destructive conflicts. We examine whether such behavior is consistent with the theory of rational strategic behavior. We analyze an infinite-horizon model in which two countries face off each period in an extended Prisoner’s Dilemma game in which an additional possibility of mutually destructive “all out war” yields catastrophic consequence for both sides. Each country is inhabited by a dynastic sequence of individuals who care about future individuals …

Advances And Missed Opportunities In The International Prosecution Of Gender-Based Crimes, Susana Sacouto Jan 2007

Advances And Missed Opportunities In The International Prosecution Of Gender-Based Crimes, Susana Sacouto

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: In the past decade, and particularly since 1998, there has been an incredible transformation in the treatment of sex-based and gender- based violence' in the fields of international humanitarian law and international criminal law. Before this, crimes committed exclusively or disproportionately against women and girls, in times of conflict, were largely either ignored, or at most, treated as secondary to other crimes. Despite the fact that rape and other forms of sexual violence had been widely reported during World War HI, for instance, the crime of rape was not expressly included in either the London Charter, establishing the International …

Germ-Line Chimerism And Paternal Care In Marmosets (Callithrix Kuhlii), Corinna N. Ross, J. A. French, G. Ortí Jan 2007

Germ-Line Chimerism And Paternal Care In Marmosets (Callithrix Kuhlii), Corinna N. Ross, J. A. French, G. Ortí

Biology Faculty Publications (Archived)

The formation of viable genetic chimeras in mammals through the transfer of cells between siblings in utero is rare. Using microsatellite DNA markers, we show here that chimerism in marmoset (Callithrix kuhlii) twins is not limited to blood-derived hematopoietic tissues as was previously described. All somatic tissue types sampled were found to be chimeric. Notably, chimerism was demonstrated to be present in germ-line tissues, an event never before documented as naturally occurring in a primate. In fact, we found that chimeric marmosets often transmit sibling alleles acquired in utero to their own offspring. Thus, an individual that contributes gametes to …

"Pleasure Is The Law": Pelleas Et Melisande As Debussy's Decisive Shift Away From Wagnerism - Dma Research Project., Stephen Anthony Barr Jan 2007

"Pleasure Is The Law": Pelleas Et Melisande As Debussy's Decisive Shift Away From Wagnerism - Dma Research Project., Stephen Anthony Barr

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research project investigates the complex relationship between Claude Debussy and the music of Richard Wagner, and in particular the ways in which Debussy's aesthetic philosophy and his attitude towards Wagner changed from embracement to rejection during the nine-year period in which he composed Pelleas et Melisande and other works. Part of the paradoxical relationship between Debussy and Wagner's music lay in the political tensions between France and Germany during the last half of the nineteenth century, culminating in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-71. During his early career as a composer, Debussy was sympathetic to many of Wagner's aesthetic beliefs, …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study investigated the influence of asynchronous computer text based technologies on the students performance when learning the preterite and the imperfect aspects. The technology used was a blog powered by Blogger and a wiki powered by Wikispaces. Two research questions guided the study: Research Question 1: Is there a difference in students achievement levels in Spanish preterite and imperfect between those using wiki-technologies and those using blog technologies after controlling for pre-intervention achievement levels? and Research Question 2: Are there differences in satisfaction levels for students learning Spanish preterite and imperfect via blog technologies as compared to those learning …

Purify And Destroy: The Political Uses Of Massacre And Genocide, Steven K. Baum Jan 2007

Purify And Destroy: The Political Uses Of Massacre And Genocide, Steven K. Baum

Journal of Hate Studies

There is a popular movement in genocide research to portray genocide as arising from anything other than hate (e.g. Moshman, 2005). From a topdown perspective, this makes sense. After all, the case has been made that there are instrumental (e.g. land grabs) and social psychological considerations— careerism, social bonding—as well as ideological and contextual considerations that all contribute to the genocide recipe and have little to do with hate per se. Yet the current trend makes it seem as if hate crimes and old ethnic enmities do not exist.

Children Exposed To Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Factors That Promote Resiliency., Kimberly P. Foley Jan 2007

Children Exposed To Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Factors That Promote Resiliency., Kimberly P. Foley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An estimated 3.3 (Carlson, 1984) to 10 million (Straus, 1992) children are exposed to intimate partner violence per year. Exposure to IPV has been shown to have a profound impact upon children’s cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. Until recently, the majority of research examining children’s experiences of IPV approached the field from a deficits perspective; choosing to examine the negative impacts IPV had upon children. This study instead explored the effects of IPV upon children from a resiliency perspective; choosing to examine the adaptive functioning children displayed despite experiencing this trauma. This study explored previously identified constructs such as maternal …

The Efficacy Of The Bitestrip In Determining Patients Awareness Of Nocturnal Bruxism., Emily R. Tolley Jan 2007

The Efficacy Of The Bitestrip In Determining Patients Awareness Of Nocturnal Bruxism., Emily R. Tolley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The presence of nocturnal bruxism in patients undergoing prosthodontic treatment can have a significant effect on the long term success of restorations. Patients who experience nocturnal bruxism are at risk for dysfunction of the stomatognathic system. This includes TMJ, muscles of the head and neck, the teeth and any restorations, and the periodontium. This condition affects the diagnostic treatment planning, treatment goals, and treatment prognosis of any prosthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of nocturnal bruxism determined by an electronic device when compared to self-reporting from verbal and written dental histories. The hypothesis of …

Student-Instructor Conflict: The Relationship Between Instructor Communicative Characteristics And Student Conflict-Handling Styles., Karissa L. Zigarovich Jan 2007

Student-Instructor Conflict: The Relationship Between Instructor Communicative Characteristics And Student Conflict-Handling Styles., Karissa L. Zigarovich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine student conflict-handling styles in regard to six perceived instructor communication traits: humor, relevance, clarity, affinity seeking, caring, and verbal aggressiveness. Participants were 286 undergraduate students enrolled in sociology courses at a large Mid-Atlantic university. Results indicated that (a) students who perceive their instructor as humorous, relevant, clear, engaging in affinity seeking and caring, but not verbally aggressive are likely to use cooperative (i.e., collaborating, compromising) conflict-handling styles; (b) students who perceive their instructor as clear are likely to not use an uncooperative (i.e., avoiding) conflict-handling style; (c) students who perceive their instructor …

"A Brave New World?": A Study Of The Disappearing Boundaries Between Entertainment And Hard News., Michael William Janney Jan 2007

"A Brave New World?": A Study Of The Disappearing Boundaries Between Entertainment And Hard News., Michael William Janney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As journalism moves ahead in the 21st Century, alternate methods of presentations could distort the information and messages presented. This thesis examines the presence of such distortions in broadcast journalism. Analyzing three types of programs ñ the traditional nightly news broadcast, the political pundit commentary/news broadcast and satirical/fake news broadcast, the study examines some of their characteristics to see how they compare and contrast. Methodologies include a quantitative content analysis, along with a descriptive observation and analysis of the data set. Research concludes that these programs have many similarities in their methods of presentation and inclusion of entertainment, but differ …

Legal Authority And Limitations, Phillip M. Lyons, Karen C. Kalmbach Jan 2007

Legal Authority And Limitations, Phillip M. Lyons, Karen C. Kalmbach

Psychology Faculty Publications (Archived)

The core element for emergency involuntary commitment is dangerousness to oneself or others. Statutes typically also mandate immediate or near immediate petition to the courts, and require immediate or near immediate professional psychiatric review. This chapter reviews the case law associated with civil commitment statutes, both historically and in terms of current issues.
