Working Spondylus At Rio Chico, Raymond Keith Skinner
Working Spondylus At Rio Chico, Raymond Keith Skinner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Debitage from the reduction of Spondylus valves into pieces useful for craft production was recovered at the site of Rio Chico, Manabi Province, Ecuador, from multiple occupations that represent different cultural periods of Coastal Ecuador. The material is analyzed and interpreted from a production context and defines basic production characteristics for each cultural period represented. Changes in these characteristics seen within the sequence are highlighted and then compared against changes found in the regional exchange system defined by Martin (2000). The results indicate that the greatest level of variability and the least processing intensity occurred within the youngest occupation (later …
Why Do Men Insult Their Intimate Partners? Partner-Directed Insults And Mate Retention, William F. Mckibbin
Why Do Men Insult Their Intimate Partners? Partner-Directed Insults And Mate Retention, William F. Mckibbin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Men sometimes insult their intimate partners and these insults predict intimate partner violence. No research has investigated the function of men's partner-directed insults. I hypothesize that men's partner-directed insults are designed to retain their longterm mate and, therefore, that men's use of partner-directed insults will covary with other mate retention behaviors. Using the Mate Retention Inventory and the Partner-Directed Insults Scale, I conducted two studies to test this hypothesis. Study 1 included 245 men who reported their mate retention behaviors and partner-directed insults. Correlations and multiple regression analyses documented the predicted relationships between men's partner-directed insults and mate retention behaviors. …
Using Social Stories And Literacy-Based Behavioral Interventions To Improve Employment Skills In Employees With Mental Retardation, Jessica L. Bucholz
Using Social Stories And Literacy-Based Behavioral Interventions To Improve Employment Skills In Employees With Mental Retardation, Jessica L. Bucholz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Preparing people with disabilities for employment is an important task. Many of these individuals have difficulty learning and performing new tasks without support or guidance. There are many accessible interventions that can increase the learning and performance of individuals with disabilities, including positive instructional, literacy based behavior interventions. A social story (Gray, 2000) is one example of a literacy-based behavioral intervention that has been effective for teaching social skills. This type of intervention typically has been used with children with autism. Several studies have used social stories to decrease disruptive behavior or teach self-help skills such as using a napkin …
Why College Undergraduates Intend To Pursue The Information Technology Major: A Multi-Theoretical Perspective, Nathan D. Heinze
Why College Undergraduates Intend To Pursue The Information Technology Major: A Multi-Theoretical Perspective, Nathan D. Heinze
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of this study is to explore environmental and personal factors that may influence college undergraduates' decisions to pursue a major in information technology. These factors include self-efficacy, outcome expectations, personality traits, interest in computers, attitudes, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and perceived IT job availability. The paper develops and tests a theoretical model based on social cognitive theory and the theory of planned behavior, and also incorporates the five factor model of personality. The intent of this study is to extend the social cognitive theory and theory of planned behavior literatures by expanding their application to IT career …
The Judicial Treatment Of Noneconomic Compensatory Damages In The 19th Century, Ronald J. Allen, Alexia Brunet
The Judicial Treatment Of Noneconomic Compensatory Damages In The 19th Century, Ronald J. Allen, Alexia Brunet
Publications
Do high verdicts for tort cases containing noneconomic damages have historical precedent? We present the results of our empirical inquiry into the treatment of noneconomic compensatory damages by the courts from 1800-1900. Using 1,175 tort cases from this era, we show that, notwithstanding constant reiteration of jury discretion over damages, courts tightly controlled awards. In fact, no case prior to 1900 permitted a noneconomic compensatory damages award exceeding $450,000 in current dollars. Logistic regression results reveal that an increase in total monetary damages is positively and significantly related to the probability of reversal when noneconomic damages were claimed, and that …

One of the most celebrated successes of the feminist movement is its lasting impact on domestic violence criminal laws. Today, society has moved from discourse characterizing domestic abuse as legitimate or merely a private problem to a belief that battering is a heinous crime, more egregious than garden-variety assault. I know all too well how far the pendulum has swung, having practiced as a public defender in the District of Columbia domestic violence system. Day after day, prosecutors proceeded with cases against the wishes of victims, resulting in the mass incarceration of young black men. Could this have been the …
In Pursuit Of A Next Generation Network For Public Safety Communications, Philip J. Weiser, Dale N. Hatfield
In Pursuit Of A Next Generation Network For Public Safety Communications, Philip J. Weiser, Dale N. Hatfield
Publications
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a unitary reliance on Land Mobile Radio systems (LMRs) failed public safety agencies, leaving them without any source of communications once they lost transmission capability. Unfortunately, in the wake of this tragedy, many have dusted off traditional prescriptions for improving public safety communications, such as more dedicated spectrum and more money for single-purpose LMRs (or LMRs based on technology that fails to facilitate broader functionalities). As we explain, however, both the needs underscored by Katrina and the capabilities made possible by emerging technologies call for a different strategy.
In this paper, we argue that …

Should Property Or Liability Rules Govern Information?, Mark A. Lemley, Philip J. Weiser

This Article focuses on an unappreciated and significant aspect of the debate over property rules in the technology law context. In particular, it argues that the classic justification for legal entitlements protected by a property rule - i.e., a right to injunctive relief - depends on the ability to define and enforce property rights effectively. In the case of many technology markets, the inability to tailor injunctive relief so that it protects only the underlying right rather than also enjoining noninfringing conduct provides a powerful basis for using a liability rule (i.e., awarding the relevant damages to the plaintiff) instead …

This paper, a companion piece to the author's earlier exploration of the case of Mutual Life Insurance Company v. Hillmon, describes the remarkable record of unethical conduct compiled by the eminent and respectable attorneys for the insurance companies in the course of that litigation. When married with the Supreme Court Justices' uncritical willingness to accept the false narrative thus contrived, these attorneys' misconduct led to the creation of an important rule of evidence - a rule of questionable merit. This article aims to remind us that lawyers who are willing to distort the process of litigation have the power …

A wide range of individuals and organisations play a role in Natural Resource Management (NRM) in Western Australia currently. Many different service providers also Interact with farmers and land managers to assist or influence farm management decision making. This extensive network has the potential to be tapped by NRM projects to more efficiently influence on-ground practice change. Given the current environment of 'information overload' it is even more important to use these established networks effectively rather than to invent new ones.
This document lists a selection of NRM-related intermediaries and the roles they play in the agricultural sector. Where available, …
Capillary Flow Analysis And Computation Of De-Wetting And Wetting Resistances In Angular Geometries, Daniel Bolleddula
Capillary Flow Analysis And Computation Of De-Wetting And Wetting Resistances In Angular Geometries, Daniel Bolleddula
Dissertations and Theses
Capillary flows in containers or conduits with interior corners are commonplace in nature and industry. The majority of investigations addressing such flows solve the problem numerically in terms of a flow resistance coefficient (friction factor) for cases where spontaneous liquid spreading along the corner occurs for contact angles below the Concus-Finn critical wetting condition for the particular conduit geometry of interest. This research effort provides missing numerical data for the flow resistance function Fi for partially wetting systems above the Concus-Finn condition. In such cases the fluid spontaneously de-wets the interior corner and often retracts into corner-bound drops. A …

Fundamental Frequency Of Clamped Plates With Circularly Periodic Boundaries, Huseyin Yuce, Chang Y. Wang
Publications and Research
A boundary perturbation method is developed to determine the fundamental frequency of vibrating plates. The method is then applied to wavy, star shape and polygonal plates with clamped boundary conditions. Approximate analytical solutions of the fundamental frequency are obtained with an accuracy of O(e^4), where e is the deviation from the unit circle.

Stochastic Models For Enhancing Agility Of Supply Chains, Alok K. Verma
Stochastic Models For Enhancing Agility Of Supply Chains, Alok K. Verma
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
This paper deals with the application of stochastic inventory model to the three-tier supply chain and verifying the values obtained by mathematical model with discrete event simulation. We investigate three-stage serial supply chain with stochastic demand and fixed replenishment lead-time. Inventory holding costs are charged at each stage, and each stage may incur a consumer backorder penalty cost charged by primary supplier to secondary supplier. The customer-demand follows Poisson distribution. We implement Base Stock model for inventory control at both suppliers. Computer simulation is then designed in such a way that it satisfied all the assumptions for mathematical model. Simulation …

Specifically, the topology sections designed include antenna input matching, …
Bowling In Different Alleys: A Study Of Neighborhood Organizations And Schools, Pamela M. Brown
Bowling In Different Alleys: A Study Of Neighborhood Organizations And Schools, Pamela M. Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This research study explored the nature of the relationship between neighborhood organizations and schools using social capital theory as the conceptual framework. The researcher chose a qualitative multiple case study design to examine three neighborhoods within the same city, their respective neighborhood organizations and the public schools within each neighborhood's boundary. The researcher found that the neighborhood organizations in this study help build social capital through the bonding ties they create with one another, and the bridging ties they form with other organizations and with local public schools. The positive impact of those ties for neighborhood social health, and for …
Color Me Green: Saudi Arabian Identity And The Manifestations Of Power, Samiah Elizabeth Baroni
Color Me Green: Saudi Arabian Identity And The Manifestations Of Power, Samiah Elizabeth Baroni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study examines tribal, Islamic, and national identity in Saudi Arabia and the relationship between identity and socio-political institutions as agencies of the Saudi state. The Western understanding of identity differs from the understanding of identity in Saudi Arabia. An examination of the Other in Saudi society is a critical component toward understanding the concept of identity in Saudi Arabia. The ability of state structures to use socio-political institutions as integrating mechanisms that provide assistance to communities is commendable. Yet, when those same institutions assume a critical role in identity formation, reproduction, and/or oppression, then an examination of those institutions …
Corporate Social Responsibility And Strategic Performance: Realizing A Competitive Advantage Through Corporate Social Reputation And A Stakeholder Network Approach, Richard C. Peters
Corporate Social Responsibility And Strategic Performance: Realizing A Competitive Advantage Through Corporate Social Reputation And A Stakeholder Network Approach, Richard C. Peters
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study provides an exploratory investigation of the link between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Firm Competitive Advantage. It poses two primary research questions (1) What valuable and rare resource does the firm acquire through CSR? and 2) How does the firm's approach to stakeholder management influence its ability to protect and enhance the value of this resource? Corporate Social Reputation, the perception of the firm by its internal and external stakeholders, is argued to be the valuable and rare resource that CSR provides. By building positive stakeholder relationships through CSR the firm is able to positively influence stakeholder assessment …
Development Of Flexible Puncture Resistant Materials System Using Silica Nanoparticles, Floria Eve Clements
Development Of Flexible Puncture Resistant Materials System Using Silica Nanoparticles, Floria Eve Clements
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Nanoscale silica particles are functionalized and ultrasonically dispersed into a mixture of polyethylene glycol and ethanol, and then reinforced with Kevlar. The stab or puncture resistance of the flexible nanophased materials system supersedes recent advances made in this area. Through SEM scans, thermal and chemical analysis, it is evident that the functionalized nanoparticles offer multiple facets of resistance to penetration of a sharp impactor. The improvement in protection is traced to the formation of siloxane bonds during functionalization. The framework for a theoretical model is established to estimate penetration depth under low velocity impact of a sharp object through the …
Cross-Layer Network Design Using Controllers, Michael J. Slavik
Cross-Layer Network Design Using Controllers, Michael J. Slavik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A cross-layer design architecture featuring a new network stack component called a controller is presented. The controller takes system status information from the protocol components and uses it to tune the behavior of the network stack to a given performance objective. A controller design strategy using a machine learning algorithm and a simulator is proposed, implemented, and tested. Results show the architecture and design strategy are capable of producing a network stack that outperforms the existing protocol stack for arbitrary performance objectives. The techniques presented give network designers the flexibility to easily tune the performance of their networks to suit …
Developmental Costs Of High Self-Esteem, Madhavi Menon
Developmental Costs Of High Self-Esteem, Madhavi Menon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Two potential developmental costs of high self-esteem were investigated. One was that high self-esteem leads children to act on antisocial cognitions (the disposition activating hypothesis). The other was that high self-esteem leads children to rationalize antisocial conduct (the disposition-rationalizing hypothesis). Both hypotheses were explored in two longitudinal studies with preadolescents. In Study 1 (N = 189) the antisocial behavior was aggression; in Study 2 (N = 407) the antisocial behavior under focus was avoidance of the mother. There was little evidence for the disposition-activating hypothesis in either study but considerable support for the disposition-rationalizing hypothesis in both studies. Over time, …
