Searching For Home: The Formation And Preservation Of Bosnian Bosniac Identity In Florida, Lauren Cheek
Searching For Home: The Formation And Preservation Of Bosnian Bosniac Identity In Florida, Lauren Cheek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
After the war and genocide that led to the collapse of Yugoslavia, the population was forced to redefine themselves along ethnic lines and the newly formed states. Because many families are ethnically mixed and are living abroad, this allows for a certain amount of personal preference in the choice of ethnic identity. One of the ethnicities from this region is the Bosniacs, who were denied a separate ethnic identity and called simply Muslim up until after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Now they are officially recognized but what does this mean to the individuals who identify with this group? This research …
Secure Routing In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jamil Ibriq
Secure Routing In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jamil Ibriq

Positive Perspectives On Prevention: Southern Women's Voices On Hiv/Aids In An African American Community, Monica Melton
Positive Perspectives On Prevention: Southern Women's Voices On Hiv/Aids In An African American Community, Monica Melton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Although Black women appear to be more at risk for HIV/AIDS than other women in the U.S., there is little information from positive Black women about positive Black women's prevention perspectives, the failure of the prevention models, and their perspectives on effective prevention measures. Black women with HIV/AIDS are configured primarily as victims, poor, sexually deviant, or inferior moms who pass disease to their children. Research helps to reinforce these misconceptions by primarily examining HIV related behaviors outside of a race, class, and gendered framework. Since the perspective of HIV positive Black women are not addressed comprehensively in the design …
Security Enhancement In Plastic Cards Using An Invisible "Watermark" Emulated By An Embedded Set Of Electromagnetic Material: An Overlay Strategy To Prevailing Security Features, Swee Hock Lim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis addresses a passive, economical strategy towards enhancing the security feature of conventional plastic cards by embedding a set of electromagnetic (EM) material that emulates an invisible "watermarking". It is an overlay strategy to prevailing security measures. Proposed method consists of incorporating (embedding) a set of metallic (foil-like) sheet of high-mu material or high-conductivity metal, or a conducting-fiber interwoven fabric. The test card when exposed to a suitable excitation of high frequency EM excitation (with or without superimposing a static magnetic field), the plastic part yields a distinct path-reluctance to the EM energy when compared to the embedded EM …
Seeking Closure: Japanese Manga And Re-Imagining Word War Ii, Concetta Marie Bommarito
Seeking Closure: Japanese Manga And Re-Imagining Word War Ii, Concetta Marie Bommarito
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
I discuss Keiji Nakazawa's Barefoot Gen and Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira manga (Japanese comics) series in light of theoretical approaches to comics and graphic novels that were developed by Will Eisner and Scott McCloud. Chapter one summarizes the fusing of traditional Japanese scroll art and Western comics that would create manga and describe the cultural conditions after World War II that drove this fusion. The chapter also describes the principle of closure that this form relies so heavily on. Chapter two discusses how manga have directly dealt with the repercussions of World War II; it is focused primarily on Barefoot Gen. …
Sexual Coercion In Intimate Relationships: An Evolutionary Perspective Informed By Sperm Competition Theory, Aaron T. Goetz
Sexual Coercion In Intimate Relationships: An Evolutionary Perspective Informed By Sperm Competition Theory, Aaron T. Goetz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Sperm competition theory states that in species 111 which females mate with multiple males within a short period of time, not only will males have to compete for mates, but they will have to compete for fertilizations and will subsequently evolve tactics associated with competition for fertilization. It has been hypothesized that sexual coercion in the context of an intimate relationship may function as a sperm competition tactic, with its occurrence related to a man's suspicions of his pmtner' s sexual infidelity. Sexual coercion in response to cues of his partner's sexual infidelity might function to introduce a male's sperm …
Some Perspectives On Godelian Philosophy, Sondra Servais
Some Perspectives On Godelian Philosophy, Sondra Servais
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
We characterize Godel's philosophy of mathematics, as presented in his published works, with possible clarification and support provided by his posthumously published drafts, as being formulated by Godel as an optimistic neo-Kantian epistemology superimposed on a Platonic metaphysics. We further consider that Godel's more general philosophical worldview can also be characterized as such. We provide a philosophical interpretation of Godel's rotating universe solutions to Einstein's field equations that is contrary to Godel's own philosophical interpretation. We compare Godel's worldview with our materialistic worldview. Our materialistic worldview developed from interpreting Godelian type results, but stands in contrast to Godel's worldview. Finally, …
Synthesis And In Vitro Evaluation Of Some Novel Nucleoside Analogs And Dna Lntercalators As Potential Anticancer Or Antiviral Agents, Yuxiang Zhao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Thiadiazoles can be considered as analogs of pyrimidines because of the well known analogy between a -CH=CH- group in benzenoid hydrocarbons and bivalent sulfur, -S-, in aromatic heterocycles. Therefore, 5-amino-2H-1 ,2,4-thiadiazole-3-one and 5-amino-3H-1 ,3,4-thiadiazole-2-one are the analogs of cytosine. In our first project, the preparation of six thiadiazole nucleoside analogs is reported: 5-diacetylamino-1 ,2,4- thiadiazol-3-one (1), 5-amino-2-(tetrahydrofuran-2-yl)-1 ,2,4-thiadiazol-3-one (2), 5- amino-3-((2' -hydroxyethoxy)methyl)-1 ,3,4-thiadiazol-2-one (3), 5-amino-3-( 4' -hydroxy- 2' -hydroxyrnethyl-butyl)-1 ,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thione ( 4), (R)-5-am ino-3-(2' ,3' - dihydroxypropyl)-1 ,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thione (5), and (S)-5-amino-3-(2' ,3 ' - dihydroxypropyl )-1 ,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thione (6). (R)-5-amino-3-(2' ,3' -dihydroxypropyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thione (5) and (S)-5-amino-3-(2' ,3' -dihydroxypropyl)-1 ,3,4- thiadiazole-2-thione (6) are …

Temperature And Salinity Response Surface Analysis Of A Subtropical Oyster Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin, 1791), Julian J. Digialleonardo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Anthropogenic modifications to' the St. Lucie River watershed have significantly altered the patterns offreshwater flow, resulting in extreme changes of salinity and the subsequent decline in the health ofthe estuary. While much is already reported for the response of Crassostrea virginica to temperature and salinity, distinct differences exist along its distribution range warranting site specific assessments for previously unstudied populations. A modified Central Composite Inscribed response surface analysis was designed to describe the response of the local C. virginica population to a range of endemic salinity and temperature combinations. Controlled temperature and salinity studies were carried out at the Gumbo …

Technology, Music And Social Change: 17 - 18th Centuries, Bruce Hieronymus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This dissertation examines the interrelationship of technology, music, and social change during the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. The analysis centers upon operas produced during these centuries beginning with the first opera of Claudio Monteverdi in 1607 and closing with the final opera of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791. The historical foundation of music, technology and social change at the beginning of the Seventeenth Century will first be established. Events that directly influence this relationship will then be examined regarding their influence upon opera development. An explanation ofthe subjects of music, technology, and social change and a discussion of the interrelationships …
Technical Feasibility Of Nanofiltration Concentrate Treatment With Low Pressure Reverse Osmosis, Adriana M. Toro
Technical Feasibility Of Nanofiltration Concentrate Treatment With Low Pressure Reverse Osmosis, Adriana M. Toro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study evaluated the technical feasibility o f increasing the typical water recovery of a pilot scale membrane system (85-90%) to 97% by treatment of nanofiltration concentrate with low-pressure reverse osmosis. The study used Biscayne aquifer water (freshwater), and determined that it may be technically feasible to increase the recovery up to approximately 95% when the RO flux is —10 gfd, the feed water pH is reduced to -6.1 with H2 SO4 , and antiscalant in the NF process. The tested membranes showed stable and similar performance under the pilot conditions. However, pilot tests were sensitive to pH variations (pH …
The Acute Effects Of Different Durations Of Static Stretching On Dynamic Balance Performance, Pablo Brando Costa
The Acute Effects Of Different Durations Of Static Stretching On Dynamic Balance Performance, Pablo Brando Costa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of the study was to determine and compare the effects of different durations of stretching on balance. Female subjects (n=23) had their balance assessed before and after two stretching interventions and a control condition on three separate days, at least 48 hours apart. The quadriceps, hamstrings, and plantar flexors were stretched after a warm-up and repeated three times. In one stretching protocol, the positions were maintained for 45 seconds, while in the other stretching protocol, the positions were held for 15 seconds. The 15- second condition produced a significant improvement in the OSI scores (p < 0.05). However, repeated measures ANOVA revealed no significant differences between groups (p = 0.08). These results suggest a stretching protocol with 45-second hold durations does not adversely affect postural stability when using the current stabilometry testing procedure.
The Effect Of A Supportive-Educative Nursing Intervention On Weight Loss And Perceived Self Care In Overweight Women With Metabolic Syndrome, Laureen Fleck
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of risk factors that are precursors to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. More women than men are diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Emphasis on diagnosis of pre-diabetes has resulted in further interest in metabolic syndrome and the need for weight reduction. Advanced practice nurses care for women with overweight and obesity in the primary care setting; however there is a lack of evidence to support the effectiveness of nursing interventions to assist women with metabolic syndrome lose weight. Based on Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, this study investigated the use of a specific supportive-educative nursing intervention to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Theresa Marie Schiavo died March 31, 2005. The 41-year-old's human and communicative faculties were so deficient that a feeding tube was necessary to nourish her and she had been silent for 15 years. In her final month, Ms. Schiavo's health, the dispute between her husband and parents concerning the removal of her feeding tube, and her subsequent death were covered extensively by American broadcast, online and print media. As she lay silent in a Florida hospice, the U.S. Congress, the president and the courts intervened, and those who spoke about her matter and the news media propelled her human tragedy …
The Influence Of Consumers' Perspectives Of Transaction Costs In Business-To-Consumer Markets, Their Risk-Bearing Propensity, And The Categories Of Goods Purchased On Consumers' Preference Of Shopping Medium, Framarz Byramjee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Despite increased internet usage, transactions conducted by consumers via ecommerce still constitute a very small percentage of total U.S. retail sales. To better understand what influences consumers' choices to shop for products or services on the internet versus local retail stores, this study tests the influence of consumers' transaction costs, coupled with the risk-bearing propensity of individuals (risk-taking or risk-averse attitude) in a shopping context, and the category of goods involved in the purchase process (such as search or experience goods), which will ultimately influence consumers' preference of shopping medium (such as online or traditional). This research study introduces the …
The Role Of Animals In The Poetry Of Anna Barbauld, Robert Burns, William Wordsworth, And Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Valerie Bauer
The Role Of Animals In The Poetry Of Anna Barbauld, Robert Burns, William Wordsworth, And Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Valerie Bauer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century poets concentrated some of their creative energies into poetry in which animals are used to comment on human experience. Such poets as Anna Barbauld, Robert Burns, William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge employ images of animals for social and political commentary as well as individual and private psychological exploration. All four poets comment on why and how animals are significant in a human context, exploring the larger political and social concerns symbolized by animal misfortune, and simultaneously drawing (sometimes unintentionally) attention to animal welfare.
The Reversal Of Fortune: The Taking Back Of The Dominant Role In Latina Fiction, Kimberly D. Barron
The Reversal Of Fortune: The Taking Back Of The Dominant Role In Latina Fiction, Kimberly D. Barron
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The two authors being discussed in this study have chosen to create characters that face the struggle against the age-old belief system that the man of the household is the ruler and decision maker. These authors reconnect with Cuba and its treatment of women by examining a Cuban woman's role in society. Cristina Garcia and Achy Obejas both create female characters that step outside the boundaries of traditional Cuban gender roles. These women writers decidedly write female narratives that emerge beyond the cultural family dynamic followed for decades. Finally, the narrative voice is strong and it is female. I chose …
The Role Of Exoribonucleases And Mutt Pyrophosphohydrolase In The Surveillance Of Oxidatively-Damaged Rna, Jianan Zhang
The Role Of Exoribonucleases And Mutt Pyrophosphohydrolase In The Surveillance Of Oxidatively-Damaged Rna, Jianan Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Three important exoribonucleases degrading RNAs in sequence-independent manner, RNase II, RNase Rand polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase), were shown to protect cells against oxidative stress. This is presumably due to the function of the exoribonucleases in the removal of oxidized RNA in cells. MutT pyrophosphohydrolase .was previously reported to scavenge oxidized nucleotides 8-oxoGTP and 8-oxoGDP, prevent their incorporation into RNA. Deficiency of MutT may lead to an increase in the level of 8-oxoG in RNA, which may enhance the requirement of the RNA surveillance function of the exoribonucleases. This study focuses on the roles of the RNA-degradation exoribonucleases in the removal of …

With the purpose of studying the impact of the cranial base upon the prognathism of the upper maxilla on a sample of 120 cephalograms, the Facial Depth Cephalometric Analysis (FDCA) was used to measure these craniofacial structures and find ethnic, sex, age, and location differences. The cephalograms obtained from a previous data of existing populations of Caucasians and African descents (30 men, 30 women), and a dated population of European descents of the Denver Growth Study (15 men, 15 women during their childhood and adolescence); were used to evaluate the facial depths and the cranial base angle. The Pearson coefficient …
Topological Specificity In Inhibitor Recognition By Matrix Metalloproteinases, Janelle Lauer-Fields
Topological Specificity In Inhibitor Recognition By Matrix Metalloproteinases, Janelle Lauer-Fields
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Alterations in activities of one family of proteases, the metzincins have been implicated in an array of physiological and pathological processes. In the present study, metzincin inhibitors were developed by utilizing topologically constrained peptides and pseudopeptides. The endothelin-family framework was used to develop a disulfideconstrained topology. This framework was chosen due to its three-dimensional similarity with a family of endogenous metzincin inhibitors, the tissue inhibitors of metalloproteases (TIMPs). The collagenous triple-helix was chosen as a second framework, because only a subset of proteolytic enzymes have the capacity to bind and hydrolyze a triple-helix. Both templates were successfully modified to generate …

Myths of creation describing the existence of clay and pottery before the origin of human beings are present in these cultures, some of who also believe that …
Visual Adaptations Of Ontogenetically Migrating Deep-Sea Crustaceans, Elizabeth A G Whitehill
Visual Adaptations Of Ontogenetically Migrating Deep-Sea Crustaceans, Elizabeth A G Whitehill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Species that are ontogenetic migrators have early life stages (juveniles) that live shallower in the water column than the adults and therefore experience a brighter environment than the adults. This work provides evidence that juveniles and adults of the ontogenetically migrating crustacean species Gnathophausia ingens, Oplophorus gracilirostris, and Systellaspis debilis have evolved visual adaptations to their respective environments. The juveniles use apposition optics that provide greater resolution, whereas the adults use superposition optics that maximize sensitivity. These animals also have regional specializations to aid in viewing a light field that is brighter above than below, such as accessory screening pigments …
Voip Network Security And Forensic Models Using Patterns, Juan C. Pelaez
Voip Network Security And Forensic Models Using Patterns, Juan C. Pelaez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) networks is becoming the most popular telephony system in the world. However, studies of the security of VoIP networks are still in their infancy. VoIP devices and networks are commonly attacked, and it is therefore necessary to analyze the threats against the converged network and the techniques that exist today to stop or mitigate these attacks. We also need to understand what evidence can be obtained from the VoIP system after an attack has occurred. Many of these attacks occur in similar ways in different contexts or environments. Generic solutions to these issues can be …
Using Normal Color, Six Inch Resolution Digital Ortho-Photographs In Mapping Pomacea Paludosa Habitat In Grassy Waters Preserve As A Natural Resource Management Tool For The Endangered Florida Raptor, Rostrhamus Sociabilis Plumbeus, Amy Lynn Peters
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Normal color digital ortho-photos with six inch resolution were used to test the feasibility of mapping the habitat of the Florida apple snail, the exclusive food source of the Endangered Florida snail kite. Several remote sensing techniques such as unsupervised and supervised classifications are evaluated and accuracy assessed. While the overall ability to classify apple snail habitat is significant, sparse areas of emergent vegetation which are preferred foraging areas for the kite were excluded by the classification and needed to be re-introduced for further analysis. The methodology can be repeated to measure change over time since the NC imagery of …
Working Spondylus At Rio Chico, Raymond Keith Skinner
Working Spondylus At Rio Chico, Raymond Keith Skinner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Debitage from the reduction of Spondylus valves into pieces useful for craft production was recovered at the site of Rio Chico, Manabi Province, Ecuador, from multiple occupations that represent different cultural periods of Coastal Ecuador. The material is analyzed and interpreted from a production context and defines basic production characteristics for each cultural period represented. Changes in these characteristics seen within the sequence are highlighted and then compared against changes found in the regional exchange system defined by Martin (2000). The results indicate that the greatest level of variability and the least processing intensity occurred within the youngest occupation (later …
Why Do Men Insult Their Intimate Partners? Partner-Directed Insults And Mate Retention, William F. Mckibbin
Why Do Men Insult Their Intimate Partners? Partner-Directed Insults And Mate Retention, William F. Mckibbin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Men sometimes insult their intimate partners and these insults predict intimate partner violence. No research has investigated the function of men's partner-directed insults. I hypothesize that men's partner-directed insults are designed to retain their longterm mate and, therefore, that men's use of partner-directed insults will covary with other mate retention behaviors. Using the Mate Retention Inventory and the Partner-Directed Insults Scale, I conducted two studies to test this hypothesis. Study 1 included 245 men who reported their mate retention behaviors and partner-directed insults. Correlations and multiple regression analyses documented the predicted relationships between men's partner-directed insults and mate retention behaviors. …
Using Social Stories And Literacy-Based Behavioral Interventions To Improve Employment Skills In Employees With Mental Retardation, Jessica L. Bucholz
Using Social Stories And Literacy-Based Behavioral Interventions To Improve Employment Skills In Employees With Mental Retardation, Jessica L. Bucholz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Preparing people with disabilities for employment is an important task. Many of these individuals have difficulty learning and performing new tasks without support or guidance. There are many accessible interventions that can increase the learning and performance of individuals with disabilities, including positive instructional, literacy based behavior interventions. A social story (Gray, 2000) is one example of a literacy-based behavioral intervention that has been effective for teaching social skills. This type of intervention typically has been used with children with autism. Several studies have used social stories to decrease disruptive behavior or teach self-help skills such as using a napkin …
