Effects Of Intervention Using Everyday Routines On The Social Reciprocity Of Children With Autism, Debra Leach Jan 2007

Effects Of Intervention Using Everyday Routines On The Social Reciprocity Of Children With Autism, Debra Leach

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Children with autism often have deficits in social reciprocity, the ability to participate in long chains of back and forth interactions with a social partner. Research has shown that deficits in social communication skills, such as social reciprocity, can have lifelong negative impacts on the lives of individuals with autism. Routines-based intervention for young children with autism is supported by research and educational law. However, there are limited studies showing the effects of routines-based intervention for children with autism. There are no studies that address social reciprocity using routinesbased intervention for children with autism. This preliminary investigation explored if parent …

Effects Of Age On Children's Binding Of Actors With Actions, Arie Spirgel Jan 2007

Effects Of Age On Children's Binding Of Actors With Actions, Arie Spirgel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In the current experiment, a group of 10-year-olds and a group of young adults watched a series of short video clips of different women performing different actions. One week later, participants were tested on their ability to discriminate the old videos from distracter videos, which included new actor/old action videos, new action/old actor videos, novel combinations of familiar actors and actions, as well as entirely new videos. The results provide evidence that the ability to accurately bind actors with their actions reaches adult levels by age 10. The results are discussed in terms of the brain areas involved in memory …

Effects Of Target Neuron Loss On Olfactory Receptor Neurons In The Adult Rat, Krista K. Sultan Jan 2007

Effects Of Target Neuron Loss On Olfactory Receptor Neurons In The Adult Rat, Krista K. Sultan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Unlike most neurons in the adult nervous system, olfactory receptor neurons (ORN), found in the olfactory epithelium (OE), continually turnover in the adult rat. These neurons project their axons to the olfactory bulb which is their central target. The present study eliminated target neurons in the bulb using N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) to examine the effects of target loss on ORN survival and maturation. We compared the effects of the NMDA lesion to bulbectomy, a permanent surgical removal of the bulb, which simultaneously causes damage to ORN axons. We found that unlike bulbectomy, large numbers of dying OE cells were not observed …

Development Of Methods For Separation And Characterization Of Proteins From Gorgonian Sources, Steven W. Jett Jan 2007

Development Of Methods For Separation And Characterization Of Proteins From Gorgonian Sources, Steven W. Jett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Research into the chemical constituents of marine organisms is a relatively new and growing field, given that much of the marine environment has only in the last half century become accessible. Despite the strides that have been made in ocean exploration, the marine biome has still been only barely explored. Much of the impetus for the isolation and identification of chemical entities from marine organisms has been related to their potential as medicines. For a number of reasons, including synthetic efficiency, this has meant that many marine compounds isolated and studied have been small molecules. In recent years, large strides …

Emily Dickinson, Linda Pergolizzi Gallagher Jan 2007

Emily Dickinson, Linda Pergolizzi Gallagher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Emily Dickinson was a poet who existed at the center of her nineteenth-century United States culture and yet wrote from a periphery located at the edge of her being. Integral to understanding her poetry is a contextual awareness of her spiritual struggle. The experience of cultural marginalization and the way it informs art through a peripheral perspective has been the focus of examination in much of modern and post-modern literary studies where attention is given as much to an author's cultural station as to his or her artistic creation. A close study of Emily Dickinson's poetry reveals a spiritually marginalized …

Elementary Teachers' Perceptions Of Gender Bias, Joyce A. Barrows Jan 2007

Elementary Teachers' Perceptions Of Gender Bias, Joyce A. Barrows

The purpose of this study was to determine elementary teachers' perceptions of gender bias and further, to determine if additional information on gender bias might have an effect on how elementary teachers interact with their students. This study is valuable because gender bias situations can have a profound influence on how boys and girls view themselves in the world. Additionally, gender bias has been linked to a technological gap between males and females. The subjects for this study were 12 elementary teachers from a large metropolitan school district who participated in three different activities. The purpose of these activities was …

Emotional Intelligence And Self-Directed Learning, Kenneth E. Muller Jan 2007

Emotional Intelligence And Self-Directed Learning, Kenneth E. Muller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this study was to investigate possible relationships between selfdirected learning and emotional intelligence in healthcare managers. There are commonalities between these constructs; however, they had not previously been examined side by side. The interrelationships of these variables with age, gender, and tenure with the health system in a supervisory role were examined. A post hoc hypothesis exploring the relationships of self-directed learning, emotional intelligence, problem solving ability needed on the job and the amount of change facing the manager in the workplace was formulated after the data were collected. Conclusions focus on the strong interrelationship between self-directed …

Elucidation Of Microbial Communities From South Florida Beaches Using 16s Rrna Sequence Analysis, Sushma Ponukumati Jan 2007

Elucidation Of Microbial Communities From South Florida Beaches Using 16s Rrna Sequence Analysis, Sushma Ponukumati

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The composition of marine bacterial communities from South Florida beaches were characterized using 16S rRNA sequence analysis. To compare cultivable and noncultured populations, community genomic DNA was extracted directly from sand and seawater samples and from two cultured equivalents. Only two ofthe 86 (2.3%) direct extracted sequences and 79 of 150 (52.6%) culture sequences belong to known isolates in Ribosomal Database (version 9.0) at 95% confidence level. At low stringency (p=0.70), the populations cluster into several unknown clads with early divergence, indicating the presence of novel well established bacterial groups. Members of phylum Bacteroidetes, Firmicuites and Proteobacteria were identified, with …

Evaluation Of Corrosion Resistant Ferric-Alloys In Chloride Contaminated Concrete, Rodrigo J. Himiob Jan 2007

Evaluation Of Corrosion Resistant Ferric-Alloys In Chloride Contaminated Concrete, Rodrigo J. Himiob

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The penetration of chloride ions through concrete can compromise the integrity of a structure. The chloride concentration, [Cl-], at which the corrosion process initiates is termed the critical chloride concentration or chloride threshold, [Cl-]th. One of the purposes of this research was to determine the [Cl-]th for various reinforcing alloys. Furthermore, the time-to-corrosion (TIC) was measured to determine the time at which bars become active. Both parameters, [Cl-]th and TTC, were found to be distributed; therefore, statistical analyses were performed to forecast the probability of activity. A new experimental procedure was introduced to increase the TTC data set by electrically …

Ethnography Of Adherence To Plans Of Care In The Hiv Positive Patient, Mark Christopher Saslo Jan 2007

Ethnography Of Adherence To Plans Of Care In The Hiv Positive Patient, Mark Christopher Saslo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) results in a decline in the body's ability to fight infection as the illness progresses. Events contributing to disease progression include the emergence of viral mutations and loss of T -helper cells. This results in a decline in overall physical well-being. One explanation for this occurrence is lack of adherence with recommended treatment plans that can result in viral mutations and replication. The health care team establishes a plan to prevent or delay this decline in health. Can clinicians expect absolute commitment to plans of care without their knowing their effects on patients' life? This study …

Experimental And Modeling Study Of Chloride Ingress Into Concrete And Reinforcement Corrosion Initiation, Hui Yu Jan 2007

Experimental And Modeling Study Of Chloride Ingress Into Concrete And Reinforcement Corrosion Initiation, Hui Yu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Effects of reinforcement and coarse aggregate on chloride ingression into concrete and reinforcement corrosion initiation have been studied with experimental and modeling (finite element method) analyses. Once specimens were fabricated and exposed to a chloride solution, various experimental techniques were employed to determine the effect of reinforcement and coarse aggregate on time-to-corrosion and chloride ingress and concentration at corrosion locations. Model analyses were performed to verify and explain the experimental results. Based upon the results, it was determined that unexpectedly higher chloride concentrations were present on the top of the rebar trace than that to the side at the same …

Experimental Investigation Of Skin Friction Drag Reduction On A Flat Plate Using Microbubbles, Zachary A. Grabe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A microbubble generation system has been designed, constructed, and tested in a circulating water tunnel. A 1.0 m long flat plate was subjected to a flow where the Reynolds number ranged from ReL = 7.23x 10^5 - 1.04 x 10^6. Bubble diameters and skin friction measurements were studied at various airflow rates and water velocities. Bubbles were produced by forcing air through porous plates that were mounted flush with the bottom of the test plate. Once emitted through the plates, the bubbles traveled downstream in the boundary layer. The airflow rate and water velocity were found to have the most …

Factors Affecting Wading Bird Prey Concentrations In The Everglades During The Dry Season, Brian Garrett P. Jan 2007

Factors Affecting Wading Bird Prey Concentrations In The Everglades During The Dry Season, Brian Garrett P.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

One factor that potentially controls the distribution and density of wading bird prey within open-water marsh habitats during seasonal drying events is the amount of available aquatic habitat, which is partly a function of the amount of microtopographic relief at a given location. To determine how microtopographic relief affects prey concentrations during dry-downs a simulation model was developed and run using empirical microtopographic data collected from the Everglades. The simulation suggests that those locations within the marsh with higher levels of microtopographic relief concentrate prey earlier during the dry-down period and potentially to greater densities overall. In addition, a model …

Foraging Habitat Modeling And Nesting Ecology Of Wood Storks In Everglades National Park, Heidi K. Herring Jan 2007

Foraging Habitat Modeling And Nesting Ecology Of Wood Storks In Everglades National Park, Heidi K. Herring

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Understanding the foraging and nesting ecology of Wood Storks will play an important role in Everglades restoration because this species has specific resource requirements during the breeding season which ultimately affect nest success. I conducted a foraging habitat use and selection study, which indicated that Wood Storks from coastal colonies, Paurotis Pond and Rodgers River Bay, require a narrow range of water depths in the mangrove-saltwater marsh ecotone near their colonies as well in the freshwater marsh habitats of the inland Everglades. Wood Storks nesting at the inland colony, Tamiarni West, relied heavily upon nearby freshwater marsh habitat and selected …

Exploring Diachronic Change In The Population-Specific Vocalizations Of Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes)., Andrew R. Halloran Jan 2007

Exploring Diachronic Change In The Population-Specific Vocalizations Of Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes)., Andrew R. Halloran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Chimpanzees have long been documented as using population-specific vocalizations, implying learning rather than just genetics in chimpanzee calls. In order for population-specific vocalizations to arise, diachronic change, or evolution, of the various features of the vocalizations must occur. When a population is split, as they were in the current study, there are changes of social structure, environment, and emotional stress (all factors which can lead to rapid phonological change in humans). These factors can act as a catalyst for punctuated diachronic change. A vocal survey was performed on two groups of chimpanzees who had been separated from each other two …

Factors Affecting Registered Nurses' Job Satisfaction And Intent To Leave, Joy Longo Jan 2007

Factors Affecting Registered Nurses' Job Satisfaction And Intent To Leave, Joy Longo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

It is estimated that there will be a 20% shortage of full time equivalent registered nurses (RN) by 2015. Retention of nurses is a priority in health care, so a better understanding of factors that contribute to job satisfaction and intent to leave is needed. One possible factor is the quality of the interpersonal relationships that occur among managers, peers, and nurses. A negative quality would be acts of hostility or horizontal violence, which is nurse-to-nurse aggression. This is theorized to be a result of oppressed group behavior. These behaviors may influence job satisfaction and the intent to stay on …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The goal of this study was to test the gender self-socialization model (GSSM). This model suggests that gender identity motivates children to strive for cognitive consistency between their gender stereotypes and their self-efficacy for those stereotypes. This study presents a novel approach to stereotype assessment by focusing on children's idiosyncratic stereotypes (as opposed to number of commonly shared stereotypes, which do not provide detailed information about the types of stereotypes individual children hold). Participants were 305 children in grades three through eight (Mage = 10.8 years). Independent variables included children's stereotypes of 62 contextually tagged behaviors and gender identity (comprising …

Heeding The Antiheroine's Call: The Rise Of The Antiheroine In Literature And Popular Culture, Cynthia C. Lyles-Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In my thesis, I argue three assertions: 1) that the 21 st Century antiheroine who has figured so prominently in literature and film is an evolution of the heroine archetype that combines both the action-oriented traditional male hero archetype and the tragically flawed, antagonistic anti-heroine archetype, 2) that the foundation for this newly modified pop culture antiheroine can be traced back to Margaret Mitchell's iconic character, Scarlett O'Hara, and finally 3) that this new modem heroine archetype, the antiheroine, has become an integral part of popular culture, both in literature and film as well as other popular media. As my …

Improving Cooperation In P2p Networks: A Social Network Approach, Victor Ponce Jan 2007

Improving Cooperation In P2p Networks: A Social Network Approach, Victor Ponce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Due to the dynamic nature of P2P systems, it is impossible to keep an accurate history of the transactions that take place while avoiding security attacks such as whitewashing and collusion, and abuse such as freeriding . This is why it is important to develop a mechanism that rewards cooperative peers and punishes misbehaving peers. Modeling P2P networks as social structures can allow incentive mechanisms to be used that prevent the negative behaviors mentioned. In this thesis, we extend a social network algorithm to include credit transfer between peers in order to reduce the path length of queries. We also …
