This work presents a systematic approach to the multivariable robust control of a hybrid fuel cell gas turbine plant. The hybrid configuration under investigation built by the National Energy Technology Laboratory comprises a physical simulation of a 300kW fuel cell coupled to a 120kW auxiliary power unit single spool gas turbine. The public facility provides for the testing and simulation of different fuel cell models that in turn help identify the key difficulties encountered in the transient operation of such systems. An empirical model of the built facility comprising a simulated fuel cell cathode volume and balance of plant components …

Capacity -Based Parameter Optimization Of Bandwidth Constrained Cpm, Rohit Iyer Seshadri Dec 2007

Capacity -Based Parameter Optimization Of Bandwidth Constrained Cpm, Rohit Iyer Seshadri

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Continuous phase modulation (CPM) is an attractive modulation choice for bandwidth limited systems due to its small side lobes, fast spectral decay and the ability to be noncoherently detected. Furthermore, the constant envelope property of CPM permits highly power efficient amplification. The design of bit-interleaved coded continuous phase modulation is characterized by the code rate, modulation order, modulation index, and pulse shape. This dissertation outlines a methodology for determining the optimal values of these parameters under bandwidth and receiver complexity constraints. The cost function used to drive the optimization is the information-theoretic minimum ratio of energy-per-bit to noise-spectral density found …

On Mathematical Modeling, Nonlinear Properties And Stability Of Secondary Flow In A Dendrite Layer, Daniel N. Riahi Dec 2007

On Mathematical Modeling, Nonlinear Properties And Stability Of Secondary Flow In A Dendrite Layer, Daniel N. Riahi

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper studies instabilities in the flow of melt within a horizontal dendrite layer with deformed upper boundary and in the presence or absence of rotation during the solidification of a binary alloy. In the presence of rotation, it is assumed that the layer is rotating about a vertical axis at a constant angular velocity. Linear and weakly nonlinear stability analyses provide results about various flow features such as the critical mode of convection, neutral stability curve, preferred flow pattern and the solid fraction distribution within the dendrite layer. The preferred shape of the deformed upper boundary of the layer, …

Beyond Foraging: Behavioral Science And The Future Of Institutional Economics, Alexander J. Field Dec 2007

Beyond Foraging: Behavioral Science And The Future Of Institutional Economics, Alexander J. Field

Economics

Institutions affect economic outcomes, but variation in them cannot be directly linked to environmental factors such as geography, climate, or technological availabilities. Game theoretic approaches, based as they typically are on foraging only assumptions, do not provide an adequate foundation for understanding the intervening role of politics and ideology; nor does the view that culture and institutions are entirely socially constructed. Understanding what institutions are and how they influence behavior requires an approach that is in part biological, focusing on cognitive and behavioral adaptations for social interaction favored in the past by group selection. These adaptations, along with their effects …

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

For decades since the formation of the defense establishment under the 1947 National Security Act, all U.S. cabinet departments, national security agencies, and military services involved in providing for the common defense have struggled to overcome differences in policy and strategy formulation, organizational cultures, and even basic terminology. Post-September 11, 2001, international systems, security environments, U.S. military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the greater Global War on Terrorism have confronted civilian policymakers and senior military officers with a complex, fluid battlefield which demands kinetic and counterinsurgency capabilities. This monograph addresses the security, stability, transition, and reconstruction missions that place …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

This paper outlines a technique which can use multiple transmit antennas to send more than one binary bit using the same number of transmit antennas over a single transmission. It uses Ultra Wideband orthogonal pulse position modulation to achieve this, with the receiver employing a Rake receiver and a Maximum Ratio Combiner optimal detector. This is done over a Space Time Spreading Time Hopping Ultra Wideband Pulse Position Modulation system assuming a rich multipath Saleh-Valenzuela MIMO channel model. Simulation results indicate that a significant gain can be achieved compared with other proposed schemes utilising multiple transmit antennas for Ultra Wide …

The Relationship Between The Mmpi-2'S Rc3 Cynicism Scale And Social Support, Blake K. Webster Dec 2007

The Relationship Between The Mmpi-2'S Rc3 Cynicism Scale And Social Support, Blake K. Webster

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The current study examined the MMPI-2's Restructured Clinical Scale 3 (RC3) measuring cynicism from the Tellegen et al. (2003) Restructured Clinical Scales project. While RC3 has shown adequate reliability coefficients, research investigating RC3 has questioned its validity and descriptive abilities. Research suggests that adequate criterion has not been established for the scale. RC3 in this study was correlated with three types of social support: Proactive Coping, Instrumental Support Seeking, and Emotional Support Seeking. Based on a review of the literature of cynicism and social support, it was hypothesized that a negative relationship would exist between the two constructs. The study …

Prices represent the monetary expression of the value of goods and services provided to customers, and the pricing process is a critical operation with a profound impact on the success and sustainability of business organizations, given its influence on profitability and the redistribution of national income allocated for consumption, which enables individuals to allocate their income between essential and luxury goods. Generally, the pricing process serves a variety of objectives that differ across organizations and is influenced by a set of factors requiring strategic responses; traditionally, there are two primary approaches to price determination: the economic approach, which is fundamentally …

Trust, Conflict, And Cooperative Behavior: The Role Of Reciprocal Relationships Within Organizations, Saad Ali Al-Anzi Dec 2007

Trust, Conflict, And Cooperative Behavior: The Role Of Reciprocal Relationships Within Organizations, Saad Ali Al-Anzi

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

This study investigates the complex interplay between trust, conflict, and cooperative behavior within organizational settings, emphasizing the pivotal role of reciprocal relationships. By examining how interpersonal and systemic trust act as catalysts for collaboration, the research highlights that mutual reliance and positive reciprocity significantly mitigate the dysfunctional effects of workplace conflict. The paper argues that when employees perceive a high level of reciprocity, they are more likely to engage in cooperative behaviors, even in the presence of task-related disagreements, as the underlying trust provides a safety net that prevents conflict from escalating into personal animosity. Through an analysis of organizational …

The Carbon-Neutral Individual, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Anne C. Steinemann Dec 2007

The Carbon-Neutral Individual, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Anne C. Steinemann

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Reducing the risk of catastrophic climate change will require leveling off greenhouse gas emissions over the short term and reducing emissions by an estimated 60-80% over the long term. To achieve these reductions, we argue that policymakers and regulators should focus not only on factories and other industrial sources of emissions but also on individuals. We construct a model that demonstrates that individuals contribute roughly one-third of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States. This one-third share accounts for roughly 8% of the world's total, more than the total emissions of any other country except China, and more than several …
