Book Review: Vigil: A Novel, Stephen Woodgeard Oct 2026

Book Review: Vigil: A Novel, Stephen Woodgeard

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

George Saunders’s Vigil is presented as a sharp, unsettling novel about climate ethics, corporate power, and the stories people use to excuse harm. The review argues that the book’s magical-real realist structure turns a dying oil executive’s final night into a moral reckoning, while also showing how family myth, corporate language, and public discourse shape denial. It also notes that the novel’s allegorical design can feel heavy-handed at times, but its central strength is its forceful critique of complicity and the difficulty of moral awakening.

Constructing The Cyber Workforce Gap: Measurement And Its Consequences, Ryan Straight Oct 2026

Constructing The Cyber Workforce Gap: Measurement And Its Consequences, Ryan Straight

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Cyber workforce-gap figures steer federal strategy, industry advocacy, and the growth of educational programs. Rather than estimating the U.S. gap, this review examines how the estimates are made: through job-posting analytics, survey-based estimation, and federal accounting, each of which must assume its way from instrument to labor market. A census of this journal's complete run illustrates what those figures underwrite in one venue: of 176 items published across eleven years, 51 invoke a labor-market workforce claim, 46 treat it as settled fact, and only one, an editorial, interrogates it. Meanwhile, the producers and auditors of those figures have diverged. Between …

Lost On The Moon: A Classroom Activity For Bringing Group Processes To Life, Christin L. Munsch, Allison Lena, Kay Sassan Oct 2026

Lost On The Moon: A Classroom Activity For Bringing Group Processes To Life, Christin L. Munsch, Allison Lena, Kay Sassan

Feminist Pedagogy

This teaching activity reviews key concepts in group processes and introduces students to Expectation States Theory (EST) and Status Characteristics Theory (SCT), two micro-sociological frameworks that explain how inequality of opportunity emerges in task-oriented small groups with consequences for unequal outcomes. The activity is built around a team-building exercise “Lost on the Moon” in which participants rank 15 survival items individually and then in small groups. We adapt this exercise by taking field notes on group interactions and drawing on these notes to facilitate a discussion in which students critically reflect on their interactions with one another. We close the …

"Two Different Histories": Lgbtq Educator Identity In An Era Of Policy Precarity In Further Education, Liberty Heath-Tavener Oct 2026

"Two Different Histories": Lgbtq Educator Identity In An Era Of Policy Precarity In Further Education, Liberty Heath-Tavener

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

In Zadie Smith’s debut novel White Teeth (2000) she writes: ‘every moment happens twice: inside and outside, and they are two different histories.’ (p. 532) Although this notion related to the struggles of global majority people in Britain after decolonisation, I liken it to the concept of identity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer (LGBTQ) educators within further education, where their internal thoughts, feelings and reality are often in conflict with external norms, ideals and policies, all of which are geared towards heteronormativity and cisnormativity. Lakoff and Johnson (1980) argue that metaphors transcend rhetorical devices and are an essential …

Extending Research Of Neighborhood Governance Systems: An Empirical Study Of Community Councils In Cincinnati, Ohio, Julie Cencula Olberding, Darrin Wilson, Stefanie Swiger Oct 2026

Extending Research Of Neighborhood Governance Systems: An Empirical Study Of Community Councils In Cincinnati, Ohio, Julie Cencula Olberding, Darrin Wilson, Stefanie Swiger

The Journal of Economics and Politics

Neighborhood governance systems have been developed as a way to enhance citizen engagement in local government, particularly in major cities. Scholarly research on these systems is quite limited, and most articles focus on neighborhood councils in Los Angeles, California. Our study extends this research to another system in a different city – specifically, community councils in Cincinnati, Ohio. Based on Li, Wen, and Cooper (2019), we surveyed their governing board members and analyzed relationships between three aspects of board performance (internal capacity, attention-action congruence, external networking) and three dimensions of community council effectiveness (promoting civic engagement, resolving neighborhood issues, advising …

The Quest For An Independent Scotland: The Impact Of Culture, Economics, And International Relations Theory On Votes Of Self-Determination, Sam Rohrer, James Gilley, Nathan Price Oct 2026

The Quest For An Independent Scotland: The Impact Of Culture, Economics, And International Relations Theory On Votes Of Self-Determination, Sam Rohrer, James Gilley, Nathan Price

The Journal of Economics and Politics

In the contemporary world, the true locus of sovereignty is up for debate. The drive for Scottish independence from the United Kingdom, within the larger context of the European Union illustrates trends within this relocation of sovereignty. Traditional research focused primarily on the cultural and identity issues at play, as well as economic issues. This work broadens the scope by placing the independence struggle within a complex international context. The shift from a purely realist state system interpretation to that of a refereed Pacific Union illustrates when nationalist and separatist movements can find conditions that allow for a viable secessionist …

Firm Behavior In The Mid-Twentieth Century American Steel Industry, Robert Rogers Oct 2026

Firm Behavior In The Mid-Twentieth Century American Steel Industry, Robert Rogers

The Journal of Economics and Politics

In the period from 1920 to 1972, the American steel industry consisted of eight large companies and a fringe composed of small domestic producers and foreign firms exporting to the United States. The market structure made it unlikely that the industry behaved in a perfectly competitive fashion. Thus, oligopoly hypotheses on firm behavior such as Nash-Bertrand and Stackelberg leadership seem plausible. This paper estimates a BLP demand model for the industry, and it, then, uses the demand parameters to estimate price equations under the different behavioral assumptions. From the information in this model, tests are made to see which hypothesis …

The Evolution Of Distributive Benefits: The Rise Of Letter-Marking In The United States Congress, Russell W. Mills, Nicole Kalaf-Hughes Oct 2026

The Evolution Of Distributive Benefits: The Rise Of Letter-Marking In The United States Congress, Russell W. Mills, Nicole Kalaf-Hughes

The Journal of Economics and Politics

The recent moratorium on earmarks has given rise to a new and largely hidden practice for securing distributive benefits: letter-marking. Letter-marking occurs when members of Congress ask (in writing) the head of an agency to retain or allocate distributive benefits in their districts. While letter-marking is common in Washington, the scholarly literature has ignored this practice. We use a unique dataset of 101 congressional letters relating to FAA funding and empirically assess the degree to which the letter-writer’s characteristics and the letter’s content impact the likelihood of achieving the objectives. In doing so, we offer a nuanced understanding of letter-marking.

Sensor Technologies And Integration Approaches For Smart Prosthetic Health Monitoring: A State-Of-The-Art Narrative Review, Mohammed Q. Abdulhasan, Jumaa S. Chiad, Firas M. Abdulghani Oct 2026

Sensor Technologies And Integration Approaches For Smart Prosthetic Health Monitoring: A State-Of-The-Art Narrative Review, Mohammed Q. Abdulhasan, Jumaa S. Chiad, Firas M. Abdulghani

AUIQ Technical Engineering Science

Transforming the residual-limb-socket interface from an intermittently evaluated ``black box'' into a monitored clinical setting that permits objective fit assessment, early danger detection, and better long-term prosthesis use is the aim of smart prosthetic health monitoring. This narrative exploration compiles peer-reviewed literature on sensing technology and, importantly, integration strategies that affect practical usability. Iterative searches by keywords and citation linking across major engineering and biomedical journal platforms were used to find literature, giving priority to current contributions while preserving important foundational works. The chosen studies were examined and classified based on (i) sensing modality (pressure/shear, temperature-humidity microclimate, chemical and perfusion-related …

Synthesis Protocols For Solar Cell Materials From Laboratory Fabrication To Scalable Manufacturing, Ayad Abbood Abdulhasan, A. M. Mustafa, Mohanad Muzahem Khalaf Oct 2026

Synthesis Protocols For Solar Cell Materials From Laboratory Fabrication To Scalable Manufacturing, Ayad Abbood Abdulhasan, A. M. Mustafa, Mohanad Muzahem Khalaf

AUIQ Technical Engineering Science

Photovoltaic (PV) technology has evolved over seven decades from single-crystal silicon cells with modest efficiencies to a diverse portfolio of silicon, thin-film, and emerging solar-cell architectures approaching or exceeding thermodynamic single-junction limits when combined in tandem configurations. Device efficiency and long-term operational stability are governed not only by the choice of absorber material but, critically, by the synthesis protocol used to fabricate it the crystal-growth method, deposition technique, solvent system, thermal budget, and interface-engineering strategy all leave a lasting imprint on morphology, defect density, and carrier transport. This review provides a comprehensive, protocol-centered survey of solar-cell synthesis across three technology …
