Please, Let's Bury The Junk: The Codis Loci And The Revelation Of Private Information, David H. Kaye Jan 2007

Please, Let's Bury The Junk: The Codis Loci And The Revelation Of Private Information, David H. Kaye

Faculty Scholarship

This Northwestern University Law Review Colloquy paper describes the four possible ways in which genetic loci could possess predictive or diagnostic value with regard to diseases and explains why these mechanisms have not led, and probably cannot lead, to useful screening tests with the Convicted Offender DNA Index System (CODIS) profiles in national, state, and local databases. It then considers the phenotypes and familial relationships that the CODIS STRs can be used to identify. The profiles carry limited information about an individual's race and familial relationships, and the article places the resulting privacy issues in perspective. Finally, the paper comments …

Abstraction Of Dimensional Relevance Of Molecular Representation: Generation Of Novel Inhibitors Against Malarial Plasmodium Falciparum Plasmepsin Iv, Christopher B. Abdul-Wahid Jan 2007

Abstraction Of Dimensional Relevance Of Molecular Representation: Generation Of Novel Inhibitors Against Malarial Plasmodium Falciparum Plasmepsin Iv, Christopher B. Abdul-Wahid

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum is endemic to 50% of the world's population, killing three million people a year, many of whom are children under five years of age. Due in part to the development of malarial resistance to current drug therapies, novel drug targets are being sought. The malarial hemolytic aspartic protease Plasmepsins are such targets of rational drug design.

We are developing a methodology to rapidly generate combinatorial libraries of chemical structures using a one-dimensional representation (Simplified molecular input line entry specification (SMILES)) of a molecule, to automatically generate a minimized three-dimensional representation (SYBYLMOL2), and to screen this …

Evaluation Of Pre-Service Teachers’ Images Of Science Teaching In Turkey, Hulya Yilmaz, Hakan Turkmen, Jon E. Pedersen, Pinar Huyuguzel Cavas

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to investigate elementary pre-service teachers’ image of science teaching, analyze the gender differences in image of science teaching, and evaluate restructured 2004 education reform by using a Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist (DASTT-C). Two hundred thirteen (213) pre-service elementary teachers from three different western universities participated in the data collection for this study. The results of study showed that Turkish elementary pre-service teachers’ perspective of science teaching style is 20% student-centered, 41% teacher-centered, and 39% between student-centered and teacher-centered. These results give some vital concerns regarding the preparation of future elementary teachers and the in-service development of …

Enzymatic Synthesis And Characterization Of Oligopeptides, Co-Oligopeptides And Hydroxy Acid Capped Polypeptides In Mixed Aqueous Organic Media, Santhana Srinivasan Jan 2007

Enzymatic Synthesis And Characterization Of Oligopeptides, Co-Oligopeptides And Hydroxy Acid Capped Polypeptides In Mixed Aqueous Organic Media, Santhana Srinivasan

Doctoral Dissertations

"Proteolytic enzymes have been used for the synthesis of homo-oligomers and hydroxy acid capped peptides with amino acids and hydroxy acid esters as substrates in aqueous and aqueous organic biphasic and triphasic systems. However, successful incorporation of hydroxy acids in oligopeptide substrates has not been demonstrated. Use of monophasic media comprising of acetonitrile/water in which oligopeptide substrates were soluble was examined for the synthesis of oligomers of neutral and polar amino acids like Met, Tyr, Lys, Gly, Asp and Glu and tailored co-oligomers of Lys-Met and Arg-Met. Effect of reaction parameters such as starting substrate concentration, system composition, reaction time, …

Comparison Of The Functional And Numerical Responses Of Resistant Versus Non-Resistant Populations Of The Copepod Acartia Hudsonica Fed The Toxic Dinoflagellate Alexandrium Tamarense, Sean Colin, Hans G. Dam Jan 2007

Comparison Of The Functional And Numerical Responses Of Resistant Versus Non-Resistant Populations Of The Copepod Acartia Hudsonica Fed The Toxic Dinoflagellate Alexandrium Tamarense, Sean Colin, Hans G. Dam

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

The functional and numerical responses of grazers are key pieces of information in predicting and modeling predator–prey interactions. It has been demonstrated that exposure to toxic algae can lead to evolved resistance in grazer populations. However, the influence of resistance on the functional and numerical response of grazers has not been studied to date. Here, we compared the functional and numerical responses of populations of the copepod Acartia hudsonica that vary in their degree of resistance to the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense. In common environment experiments carried out after populations had been grown under identical conditions for several generations, …

Synthesis Of Novel Aziridine Derivatives Of Podocarpic Acid, Stephen Rhoden Jan 2007

Synthesis Of Novel Aziridine Derivatives Of Podocarpic Acid, Stephen Rhoden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Podocarpic acid (a diterpenoid resin acid extracted from the Podocarpacea specie of plants) has shown cytotoxicity against carcinoma of the nasopharynx. Since this discovery has been made, research has been performed in order to alter the structure of the resin acid so as to increase the anticancer activity. The carboxylic acid and phenol functional groups, which are present in podocarpic acid, make it possible to synthesize new derivatives selectively at the C-15, C-13, and C-7 positions as well as by substitution of the phenol hydroxyl group. Thus numerous derivatives can be prepared, in high yield, for the purpose of investigating …

A Window Into The Regulated Commons: The Takings Clause, Investment Security, And Sustainability, Josh Eagle Jan 2007

A Window Into The Regulated Commons: The Takings Clause, Investment Security, And Sustainability, Josh Eagle

Faculty Publications

The holding of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in American Pelagic Fishing Co. v. United States points to the conclusion that the government will almost never be liable, under the Takings Clause, when fisheries regulations reduce the value of commercial fishing permits, vessels, or gear. From the perspective of natural resource economics, this is a healthy result. Economists suggest that solving commons problems requires that natural resources be under the complete control of a sole owner who makes self-interested decisions about resource use, and if the Fifth Amendment required the government owner to compensate fishermen when …

Replication Fork Regression In Vitro By The Werner Syndrome Protein (Wrn): Holliday Junction Formation, The Effect Of Leading Arm Structure And A Potential Role For Wrn Exonuclease Activity, Amrita Machwe, Liren Xiao, Robert G Lloyd, Edward Bolt, David K. Orren Jan 2007

Replication Fork Regression In Vitro By The Werner Syndrome Protein (Wrn): Holliday Junction Formation, The Effect Of Leading Arm Structure And A Potential Role For Wrn Exonuclease Activity, Amrita Machwe, Liren Xiao, Robert G Lloyd, Edward Bolt, David K. Orren

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

The premature aging and cancer-prone disease Werner syndrome stems from loss of WRN protein function. WRN deficiency causes replication abnormalities, sensitivity to certain genotoxic agents, genomic instability and early replicative senescence in primary fibroblasts. As a RecQ helicase family member, WRN is a DNA-dependent ATPase and unwinding enzyme, but also possesses strand annealing and exonuclease activities. RecQ helicases are postulated to participate in pathways responding to replication blockage, pathways possibly initiated by fork regression. In this study, a series of model replication fork substrates were used to examine the fork regression capability of WRN. Our results demonstrate that WRN catalyzes …
