Mapping Hiv Prevention In Poland: Contested Citizenship And The Struggles For Health After Socialism, Jill Teresa Owczarzak Jan 2007

Mapping Hiv Prevention In Poland: Contested Citizenship And The Struggles For Health After Socialism, Jill Teresa Owczarzak

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This ethnographic dissertation research project examines HIV prevention programs in Warsaw, Poland to explore the concurrent processes of democratization and privatization as Poland begins European Union accession. As inherently political public health interventions, HIV prevention programs provoke discussions of risk and responsibility, and visions of the moral social order. Therefore, they can be used to understand the ways in which politically and socially marginalized populations invoke claims to citizenship status through attention to health issues. From an epidemiological perspective, HIV/AIDS arrived in Poland relatively late (1985) and never reached the anticipated epidemic levels. In the 1980s, drawing attention to the …

Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Traumatic Brain Injury In Aging, Changxing Shao Jan 2007

Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Traumatic Brain Injury In Aging, Changxing Shao

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prominent disease in developed countries, and age is an important factor in functional outcome. Although aged patients typically show diminished recovery compared to young patients, and have higher mortality and morbidity following TBI, the mechanism is not well understood. To date, there is no effective therapeutic for TBI. Previous studies indicate a secondary injury in TBI begins immediately after impact, and is likely the major contribution to delayed neuron dysfunction and loss. Studies also suggest mitochondrial dysfunction and increased free radical species (ROS) production following TBI may play a key role in the process. …

Cyclooxygenase-2-Dependent Remodeling Of The Ductus Arteriosus, Darshini Trivedi Jan 2007

Cyclooxygenase-2-Dependent Remodeling Of The Ductus Arteriosus, Darshini Trivedi

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Transition of the cardiopulmonary circulation at birth requires functional closure of the ductus arteriosus (DA). The DA is an arterial shunt that is vital in the fetus for diverting the pulmonary circulation away from the uninflated lungs. Failure of the vessel to functionally close after birth is known as patent DA, which is the second most common congenital heart disease. Patent DA may seriously compromise neonatal health and current pharmacological treatments are often limited by serious complications or a significant failure rate, thereby increasing the necessity for surgical intervention. Recently, we were the first to show that genetic or pharmacological …

Processes Leading Self-Identified Heterosexuals To Develop Into Sexual Minority Social Justice Allies: A Qualitative Exploration, Julie Marie Duhigg Jan 2007

Processes Leading Self-Identified Heterosexuals To Develop Into Sexual Minority Social Justice Allies: A Qualitative Exploration, Julie Marie Duhigg

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The impact of homonegativity on both sexual minorities and heterosexuals is profoundly debilitating. Due to the implicit power of their privileged status, heterosexually-identified individuals can serve a crucial role as allies in eliminating sexual minority oppression. Because minimal research exists around heterosexual identity issues, broadly, and sexual minority ally development, specifically, it is difficult to promote such ally work without a clear understanding of the developmental processes and motivational issues that lead heterosexuals to sexual minority social justice action. The current study sought to explore the developmental experiences of heterosexuallyidentified exemplars who work in their communities for sexual minority social …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Olfactory Neurodegeneration, Radhika Anand Vaishnav Jan 2007

Molecular Mechanisms Of Olfactory Neurodegeneration, Radhika Anand Vaishnav

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Olfactory sensory decline has been associated with normal aging as well as neurodegenerative disorders, yet the underlying mechanisms are unclear. The overall aim of this dissertation was to investigate the fundamental molecular and cellular mechanisms associated with olfactory neurodegeneration. This investigation uses an integrative approach, combining proteomics and gene expression analyses with cellular and tissuelevel characterization. Using these approaches, two model systems were investigated: 1) normally aging C57BL/6 mice of ages 1.5-, 6- and 20-months; and 2) a mouse model of elevated endogenous oxidative stress-associated neurodegeneration, namely, the Harlequin mutant mouse. The first specific aim was to test the hypothesis …

The Response Of A General Circulation Climate Model Tohigh Latitude Freshwater Forcing In The Atlantic Basinwith Respect Totropi, Victor Paulis Jan 2007

The Response Of A General Circulation Climate Model Tohigh Latitude Freshwater Forcing In The Atlantic Basinwith Respect Totropi, Victor Paulis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current cycle of climate change along with increases in hurricane activity, changing precipitation patterns, glacial melt, and other extremes of weather has led to interest and research into the global correlation or teleconnection between these events. Examination of historical climate records, proxies and observations is leading to formulation of hypotheses of climate dynamics with modeling and simulation being used to test these hypotheses as well as making projections. Ocean currents are believed to be an important factor in climate change with thermohaline circulation (THC) fluctuations being implicated in past cycles of abrupt change. Freshwater water discharge into high-latitude oceans …

The Relative Sensitivity Of An Olfactory Identification Deficit In Individuals With Schizotypal Personality Features, Vidyulata Kamath Jan 2007

The Relative Sensitivity Of An Olfactory Identification Deficit In Individuals With Schizotypal Personality Features, Vidyulata Kamath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Olfactory identification deficits have received recent attention as a potentially useful endophenotype for schizophrenia. Examination of this deficit in individuals with schizotypal personality features (SPF) offers an alternative approach to multiple confounds present when examining individuals with schizophrenia. The aim of the current study was to compare the relative sensitivity of performance on measures of olfaction identification and sustained attention to the presence of SPF. Twenty-six undergraduates were defined as having SPF based on scoring in the top 10% of the Abbreviated Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ-B; mean age 19.6, SD = 1.1; 62% female). These individuals were compared to twenty-six …

An Examination Of The Effectiveness Of The Adomian Decomposition Method In Fluid Dynamic Applications, Sonia Holmquist Jan 2007

An Examination Of The Effectiveness Of The Adomian Decomposition Method In Fluid Dynamic Applications, Sonia Holmquist

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since its introduction in the 1980's, the Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) has proven to be an efficient and reliable method for solving many types of problems. Originally developed to solve nonlinear functional equations, the ADM has since been used for a wide range of equation types (like boundary value problems, integral equations, equations arising in flow of incompressible and compressible fluids etc...). This work is devoted to an evaluation of the effectiveness of this method when used for fluid dynamic applications. In particular, the ADM has been applied to the Blasius equation, the Falkner-Skan equation, and the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. This …

A Cultural Contingency Leadership Model For A Multinational Higher Education Joint Venture, Frankie Albritton Jan 2007

A Cultural Contingency Leadership Model For A Multinational Higher Education Joint Venture, Frankie Albritton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addressed the need for empirical research on the leadership of multinational virtual teams (Davis & Bryant, 2003; Early & Gibson, 2002; Ilgen, Lepine, and Hollenbeck, 1997; Prieto & Arias, 1997), particularly in the field of educational leadership (Cheng, 1995). This was accomplished through the development of a model based upon the cultural values discovered through the use of Hofstede's (1980, 2001) Values Survey Module 94 (VSM 94). As workers will bring values from their own cultures to the multinational workplace (Bochner & Hesketh, 1994), research was conducted to determine the cultural values of economics professors in the United …

Resiliency In Adolescent College Students, Nancy Ahern Jan 2007

Resiliency In Adolescent College Students, Nancy Ahern

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The construct of resilience has gained considerable attention over the last four decades since researchers observed that children and youth could cope and adapt in spite of adversity. Resilience involves a dynamic process involving an interaction between both risk and protective processes, internal and external to the individual, that can modify the effects of an adverse life event. Adolescence is considered to be a period of vulnerability for most individuals as they often partake in high risk behaviors. Further, those individuals who are in their early college years are faced with the developmental challenges of this life phase which can …

Verification Of Pilot-Scale Iron Release Models, Stephen Glatthorn Jan 2007

Verification Of Pilot-Scale Iron Release Models, Stephen Glatthorn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A model for the prediction of color release from a pilot distribution system was created in 2003 by Imran. This model allows prediction of the release of color from aged cast iron and galvanized steel pipes as a function of water quality and hydraulic residence time. Color was used as a surrogate measurement for iron, which exhibited a strong linear correlation. An anomaly of this model was an absence of a term to account for pH, due to the influent water being well stabilized. A new study was completed to evaluate the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors against traditional adjustment. Two …

Identification And Suitability Of A Non-Anthropomorphic Meta-Language Framework In Military Applications, Gilbert Cardona Jan 2007

Identification And Suitability Of A Non-Anthropomorphic Meta-Language Framework In Military Applications, Gilbert Cardona

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Humans carry mental models concerning the behaviors, looks, and operation of products, tools, and items used in their daily lives. When these items do not fit a user's conceptual model confusion and inefficiency occur. There are four basic types of mental models based on interactive activities: 1) instructing, 2) conversing, 3) manipulating and navigating, and 4) exploring and browsing. This thesis will focus on the conversing conceptual model and its application to communications between human-agent teams to best fit a user's mental model for that communication. A non-anthropomorphic framework does not exist for use in military applications such as; target …

Simulations-Guided Design Of Process Analytical Sensor Using Molecular Factor Computing, Bin Dai Jan 2007

Simulations-Guided Design Of Process Analytical Sensor Using Molecular Factor Computing, Bin Dai

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Many areas of science now generate huge volumes of data that present visualization, modeling, and interpretation challenges. Methods for effectively representing the original data in a reduced coordinate space are therefore receiving much attention. The purpose of this research is to test the hypothesis that molecular computing of vectors for transformation matrices enables spectra to be represented in any arbitrary coordinate system. New coordinate systems are selected to reduce the dimensionality of the spectral hyperspace and simplify the mechanical/electrical/computational construction of a spectrometer. A novel integrated sensing and processing system, termed Molecular Factor Computing (MFC) based near infrared (NIR) spectrometer, …

Neonatal Immune Modulation To Improve Pneumocystis Clearance, Kerry Mcgarr Empey Jan 2007

Neonatal Immune Modulation To Improve Pneumocystis Clearance, Kerry Mcgarr Empey

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Pneumocystis carinii is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes lifethreatening pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals. Infants appear to be particularly susceptible to Pneumocystis (PC) pulmonary infections. The higher incidence of PC as well as other pulmonary infections among infants is likely due to an immature immune system. The neonatal lung environment is deficient immunologically in preterm as well as term infants (1, 2). Decreased phagocytic capacity of macrophages in newborns may increase the risk of infection from inhaled pathogens (1, 2). We have previously demonstrated that there is approximately a 3-week delay in the clearance of PC organisms from pup mouse …

Influence Of The Serotonergic System On Physiology, Development, And Behavior Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Sameera Dasari Jan 2007

Influence Of The Serotonergic System On Physiology, Development, And Behavior Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Sameera Dasari

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The regulation and modulation of the serotonergic system is clinically significant in humans. Abnormally low levels of serotonin can result in depression and conditions like panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, sudden infant death syndrome, and eating disorders. The mechanistic role of serotonin (5-HT) on the neural circuits related with these diseases is not definitively known. Drosophila is a simple model system that provides an advantage over vertebrates to modify genetically and for electrophysiological studies on identifiable cells. In this organism the sensory-CNS-motor circuit is modulated by 5-HT, octopamine (OA), and dopamine (DA), which gives one insight that these …

Pfi-Zeke Spectroscopy And Theoretical Calculations Of Transition Metal-Aromatic Hydrocarbon Complexes, Bradford Raymond Sohnlein Jan 2007

Pfi-Zeke Spectroscopy And Theoretical Calculations Of Transition Metal-Aromatic Hydrocarbon Complexes, Bradford Raymond Sohnlein

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Transition metal-aromatic hydrocarbon complexes were generated in a supersonic jet and studied by zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The target metal complexes were identified using time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and their ionization thresholds were located via photoionization efficiency spectroscopy. ZEKE spectroscopy was used to measure the ionization energies and vibrational frequencies of the metal complexes. Their electronic states and corresponding molecular structures were determined by comparing the experimental spectra to quantum chemical calculations and Franck-Condon simulations. In this dissertation, the metal complexes of four different aromatic hydrocarbon ligands were studied: benzene (bz), naphthalene (np), biphenyl (bp) …

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Membrane-Supported Bimetallic Nanoparticles For Pcb And Trichloroethylene Dechlorination, Jian Xu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Nanosized metal particles have become an important class of materials in the field of catalysis, optical, electronic, magnetic and biological devices due to the unique physical and chemical properties. This research deals with the synthesis of structured bimetallic nanoparticles for the dechlorination of toxic organics. Nanoparticle synthesis in aqueous phase for dechlorination studies has been reported. However, in the absence of polymers or surfactants particles can easily aggregate into large particles with wide size distribution. In this study, we report a novel in-situ synthesis method of bimetallic nanoparticles embedded in polyacrylic acid (PAA) functionalized microfiltration membranes by chemical reduction of …
