Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

The β3 subunit of the γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABAA-R) has been reported to be important for palate formation, anesthetic action, and normal nervous system function. This subunit has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of Angelman syndrome and autism spectrum disorder. To further investigate involvement of this subunit, we previously produced mice with a global knockout of β3. However, developmental abnormalities, compensation, reduced viability, and numerous behavioral abnormalities limited the usefulness of that murine model. To overcome many of these limitations, a mouse line with a conditionally inactivated β3 gene was engineered.

Position And Orientation Correction For Pipe Profiling Robots, Andrew John Dettmer Jan 2007

Position And Orientation Correction For Pipe Profiling Robots, Andrew John Dettmer

Doctoral Dissertations

Sewer pipelines are prevalent, important, valuable, unnoticed, and often in a state of disrepair. Pipeline inspection is essential for effective management of wastewater systems and is now mandated for many municipalities complying with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board Statement 34 and EPA regulations. Pipe inspection robots are routinely used to inspect underground pipelines for cracks, deformations, leaks, blockages and other anomalies to prevent catastrophic failure and to ensure cost effective maintenance and renewal. Most existing pipe inspection robots only collect video footage of pipe condition. Pipe profiling technology has recently been introduced to allow for measurement of the internal coordinate …

A Potential Bias In The Temporal Method For Estimating Ne In Admixed Populations Under Natural Selection, Hitoshi Araki, Robin Waples, Michael S. Blouin Jan 2007

A Potential Bias In The Temporal Method For Estimating Ne In Admixed Populations Under Natural Selection, Hitoshi Araki, Robin Waples, Michael S. Blouin

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Indirect genetic methods are frequently used to estimate the effective population size (Ne) or effective number of breeders (Nb) in natural populations. Although assumptions behind these methods are often violated, there have been few attempts to evaluate how accurate these estimates really are in practice. Here we investigate the influence of natural selection following a population admixture on the temporal method for estimating Ne. Our analytical and simulation results suggest that Ne is often underestimated in this method when subpopulations differ substantially in allele frequencies and in reproductive success. The underestimation …

Bringing Deference Back (But For How Long?), Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2007

Bringing Deference Back (But For How Long?), Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

For most of the past decade, the Supreme Court seemed to be gradually eroding the deference accorded to administrative agencies. In Christensen v. Harris County and United States v. Mead Corp. the Court refused to accord Chevron deference to agencies' interpretations of statutes when the agencies adopted those interpretations through informal procedures. The trend appeared to continue when the Court refused to accord Chevron deference to tobacco regulations adopted by the Food and Drug Administration in FDA v. Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. or to controlled substance regulations adopted by the Attorney General in Gonzales v. Oregon. In addition, …

Mechanical Characterization Of Spherical Hydrogels: Contact Diameter Measurement, Joshua Bunch Jan 2007

Mechanical Characterization Of Spherical Hydrogels: Contact Diameter Measurement, Joshua Bunch

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

In an effort to develop new ophthalmic treatments revolving around the ocular lens, the mechanical characteristics of natural ocular lenses and synthetic models must be determined and compared. One mechanical characteristic that is necessary when making comparisons is the variation of contact circle diameter or contact area with varying strains. A method was used in this experiment to measure the varying contact circle diameter of spherical hydrogels at strains up to 15%. This method could be used to estimate the varying contact diameter of other similar materials such as natural ocular lenses if the precision of the method is improved. …

Polymer Gels: Mimickin G Biological Environments, Joshua Carey Jan 2007

Polymer Gels: Mimickin G Biological Environments, Joshua Carey

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

A comparison of the hydrolysis of pyruvic acid in polymer gels and in aqueous environment will be studied using NMR techniques. Relaxation time and diffusion rates will be determined and compared to show the mimicking capability of the polymer gels to that of biological environments. This will allow for a means in which chemical reactions can be performed in a medium that more closely resembles the rate that the reaction would occur in biological systems.

Telangiectasia Detection In Dermoscopy Images, David Erdos Jan 2007

Telangiectasia Detection In Dermoscopy Images, David Erdos

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Melanoma lesions that exhibit irregular linear vessels can be misdiagnosed due to the fact that their clinical appearance can often closely resemble other skin conditions. Detection these irregular linear blood vessels, or telangiectasia could improve the accuracy of melanoma diagnosis. An algorithm that detects telangiectasia has been developed; it initially searches for color drops in an image in various directions and then uses various post processing techniques to improve the accuracy. The feasibility of using classifiers such as neural networks to further improve the accuracy has also been investigated.

Improving The Usability Of Evolutionary Algorithms: Self-Adaptive Semi-Autonomous Democratic Parent Selection, Joshua M. Eads Jan 2007

Improving The Usability Of Evolutionary Algorithms: Self-Adaptive Semi-Autonomous Democratic Parent Selection, Joshua M. Eads

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

One of the primary obstacles to Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) fulfilling their promise as easy to use general-purpose problem solvers is the difficulty of correctly configuring them for specific problems such as to obtain satisfactory performance. This paper introduces the concept of democratic, semi-autonomous parent selection by encoding and evolving population rating operators as in Genetic Programming and shows the potential of extending self-adaptation by pairing mates using an adaptation of the Stable Roommates problem. Replacing the typical general parent selection algorithm with autonomously evolved individual selection parameters has the prospective to bring EAs a step closer to their promise as …

The Role Of Westward Intensification In Potential Vorticity Homogenization, Toshihiro Sakamoto Jan 2007

The Role Of Westward Intensification In Potential Vorticity Homogenization, Toshihiro Sakamoto

Journal of Marine Research

Using a two-layer quasigeostrophic model with weak interfacial and bottom friction we propose a mechanism for potential vorticity homogenization in a non-eddying, wind-driven gyre closed through a viscous western boundary layer, to which the previous theory based on the Prandtl–Batchelor theorem cannot be applied. It is shown that there exist steady states in which the lower-layer potential vorticity in a large pool of closed geostrophic contours becomes substantially uniform. The homogenization process is dominated by advection and thus completed within a single passage through the gyre. This is because an O (1) anomaly of potential vorticity that is comparable to …

Dissipation In Hydraulic Transitions In Flows Through Abyssal Channels, S. A. Thorpe Jan 2007

Dissipation In Hydraulic Transitions In Flows Through Abyssal Channels, S. A. Thorpe

Journal of Marine Research

There is growing evidence from observations that mixing occurs in hydraulic jumps, or flow transitions, downstream of sills within channels connecting deep ocean basins or within submarine canyons on the flanks of mid-ocean ridges. Models with continuous profiles of velocity and density upstream and downstream of a transition, but conforming to continuity conditions, are devised to represent the mixing that occurs in a hydraulic jump in a stratified shear flow of finite depth moving over a horizontal boundary in a deep fluid. These are used to assess the conditions in which transitions may occur and to provide an estimate of …

Phytoplankton Pigment Distribution In The Northwestern Alboran Sea And Meteorological Forcing: A Remote Sensing Study, D. Macías, G. Navarro, F. Echevarría, C. M. García, J. L. Cueto

Journal of Marine Research

A set of weekly-composite SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field of view Sensor) imagery (from 1998 to 2004) has been used to asses the temporal and spatial variability of the surface chlorophyll distribution in the Northwestern Alboran Sea. Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of the images series shows the existence of three different regions in which surface chlorophyll presents a homogeneous temporal behavior in the neighborhood of the Strait of Gibraltar. The temporal patterns of surface chlorophyll concentrations in each region have been characterized by studying the role of several forcing factors, mainly the zonal component of the wind field. The first identified region …

The Geography Of Linear Baroclinic Instability In Earth’S Oceans, K. Shafer Smith Jan 2007

The Geography Of Linear Baroclinic Instability In Earth’S Oceans, K. Shafer Smith

Journal of Marine Research

Satellite observations reveal a mesoscale oceanic circulation dominated by turbulence that is correlated, in most cases, with local baroclinicity. Linear baroclinic instability theory has proved useful in understanding the time and space scales of atmospheric eddies. The question addressed here is, to what degree can the observed oceanic eddy activity be understood through a local, linear stability analysis? This question is addressed as follows. A local quasigeostrophic linear stability calculation is performed on a grid of wavenumbers, ranging in magnitude about the local deformation wavenumber, for each vertical profile in a dataset of neutral density for the world's oceans. The …

Transient Tracer Dynamics In A Lattice-Automaton Model Of Bioturbation, Daniel C. Reed, Bernard P. Boudreau, Katherine Huang Jan 2007

Transient Tracer Dynamics In A Lattice-Automaton Model Of Bioturbation, Daniel C. Reed, Bernard P. Boudreau, Katherine Huang

Journal of Marine Research

Mixing of sediments by benthic fauna represents a dominant transport process of solids in the majority of surficial marine deposits. Short-term mixing rates are often determined by fitting a transient, diffusive model of bioturbation to vertical profiles of introduced particles (e.g., luminophores). Previous field studies adopting this approach have noted that mixing intensity decreases with time and the nature of mixing progresses from advective or nonlocal transport to diffusive mixing. These observations have been attributed to "age-dependent" mixing. The present study employs a lattice-automaton model to investigate the short-term behavior of conservative transient tracers. Simulations demonstrate that despite constant, indiscriminate …

Effects Of The New Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Pxd101 In Bladder Cancer, Hristos Zacharias Kaimakliotis Jan 2007

Effects Of The New Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Pxd101 In Bladder Cancer, Hristos Zacharias Kaimakliotis

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) mediate gene expression and chromatin assembly, and induce growth arrest and apoptosis of tumor cells, thus representing a new strategy for human cancer therapy. Changes in apoptosis signaling pathways and the effect on cell growth and cell-cycle arrest of a new HDACI, PXD101, on T-24 bladder cancer cells form the basis of this study. T-24 cells were incubated with PXD101 at varying concentrations and times, and viable cell count and proliferation curves were constructed. Cell cycle analysis was conducted with Fluorescent Activated Cell Sorting and changes in apoptosis signaling proteins that were previously found to be …

Making Connections Beyond The Choir, David Johns Jan 2007

Making Connections Beyond The Choir, David Johns

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Conservationists rely heavily on support from sectors of the population that want wildlife and wild places protected, but for whom it is not a priority. Support for conservation is widespread but not deep and seems to be weakening. This must be changed. Some of the obstacles are material—such as, fewer people have spent any part of their childhood immersed in nature. But many of the obstacles to deepening support among various constituencies rests with conservationists' prejudices: a belief that if people know the facts they will do the right thing; that truth by itself can overcome propaganda; that people are …

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic commonly used by US physicians, has recently been

shown to be a powerful anti-depressant and is also capable of eliciting transpersonal experiences

that can be transformative. Although currently approved in the US only for use as an

anesthetic, physicians there can legally prescribe it off-label to treat various psychological/

psychiatric problems and it has been used for these non-anesthetic purposes in Argentina,

Iran, Mexico, Russia, and the UK, as well as in the US. The literature on using ketamine

psychotherapeutically is reviewed and two case studies using ketamine-enhanced psychotherapy

(KEP) for treating death anxiety in terminally-ill …

A New Satellite-Based Methodology For Continental-Scale Disturbance Detection, David J. Mildrexler, Maosheng Zhao, Faith Ann Heinsch, Steven W. Running

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

The timing, location, and magnitude of major disturbance events are currently major uncertainties in the global carbon cycle. Accurate information on the location, spatial extent, and duration of disturbance at the continental scale is needed to evaluate the ecosystem impacts of land cover changes due to wildfire, insect epidemics, flooding, climate change, and human-triggered land use. This paper describes an algorithm developed to serve as an automated, economical, systematic disturbance detection index for global application using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)/Aqua Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Terra/MODIS Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) data from 2003 to 2004. The algorithm is based …

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

The Kittlitz's Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris) is a rare, non-colonial seabird often associated with tidewater glaciers and a recent candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act. We estimated abundance of Kittlitz's Murrelets across space and time from at-sea surveys along the coast of Alaska (USA) and then used these data to develop spatial models to describe abundance patterns and identify environmental factors affecting abundance. Over a five-week period in the summer of 2005, we recorded 794 Kittlitz's Murrelets, 16 Marbled Murrelets (B. marmoratus), and 70 unidentified murrelets. The overall population estimate (N, mean ± …

What Is Patentable Subject Matter? The Supreme Court Dismisses Labcorp V. Metabolite Laboratories, But The Issue Is Not Going Away, Sue Ann Mota

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Patent law seeks to strike a balance regarding patentable subject matter between overprotection, which can impede the free exchange of ideas, and under-protection, which can lessen the incentive to invent. This article summarizes the Supreme Court's recent decision to dismiss Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings v. Metabolite Laboratories, Inc., passing on the opportunity to consider the issue of what constitutes patentable subject matter under the Patent Act, and the author outlines recommendations for when the issue is raise by future litigants.

Gone In A Blink: The Overlooked Privacy Problems Caused By Contactless Payment Systems, Shane L. Smith

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

The use of RFID technology in contactless payment devices presents an expanding menu of challenges and concerns to privacy advocates. While rapid, creative advances have been made by contactless payment system issuers, neither privacy advocates nor lawmakers have used the same creative visions to address the privacy problems caused by contactless payment systems. The author proposes a legislative response to address privacy concerns without stifling technological developments.
