Linkage Analysis Of A Model Quantitative Trait In Humans: Finger Ridge Count Shows Significant Multivariate Linkage To 5q14.1, Sarah E. Medland, Danuta Z. Loesch, Bogdan Mdzewski, Gu Zhu, Grant W. Montgomery, Nicholas G. Martin
Psychiatry Publications
The finger ridge count (a measure of pattern size) is one of the most heritable complex traits studied in humans and has been considered a model human polygenic trait in quantitative genetic analysis. Here, we report the results of the first genome-wide linkage scan for finger ridge count in a sample of 2,114 offspring from 922 nuclear families. Both univariate linkage to the absolute ridge count (a sum of all the ridge counts on all ten fingers), and multivariate linkage analyses of the counts on individual fingers, were conducted. The multivariate analyses yielded significant linkage to 5q14.1 (Logarithm of odds …
Possible Use Of Repeated Cold Stress For Reducing Fatigue In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Hypothesis, Nikolai A. Shevchuk
Possible Use Of Repeated Cold Stress For Reducing Fatigue In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Hypothesis, Nikolai A. Shevchuk
Radiation Oncology Publications
Background Physiological fatigue can be defined as a reduction in the force output and/or energy-generating capacity of skeletal muscle after exertion, which may manifest itself as an inability to continue exercise or usual activities at the same intensity. A typical example of a fatigue-related disorder is chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a disabling condition of unknown etiology and with uncertain therapeutic options. Recent advances in elucidating pathophysiology of this disorder revealed hypofunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and that fatigue in CFS patients appears to be associated with reduced motor neurotransmission in the central nervous system (CNS) and to a smaller extent …

An Electrospray-Based, Ozone-Free Air Purification Technology, Gary Tepper, Royal Kessick, Dmitry Pestov
Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications
A zero-pressure-drop, ozone-free air purification technology is reported. Contaminated air was directed into a chamber containing an array of electrospray wick sources. The electrospray sources produce an aerosol of tiny, electrically charged aqueous droplets.Charge was transferred from the droplets onto polar and polarizable species in the contaminated air stream and the chargedcontaminants were extracted using an electric field and deposited onto a metal surface. Purified air emerged from the other end of the chamber. The very small aqueous electrospray droplets completely evaporate so that the process is essentially dry and no liquid solvent is collected or recirculated. The air purification …

MnFe2O4nanoparticles with diameters ranging from about 4to50nm were synthesized using a modified coprecipitation method. X-ray diffractograms revealed a pure phase spinel ferrite structure for all samples. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the particles consist of a mixture of both spherical (smaller) and cubic (larger) particles dictated by the reaction kinetics. The Néel temperatures (TN) of MnFe2O4 for various particle sizes were determined by using high temperature magnetometry. The ∼4nm MnFe2O4 particles showed a TN of about 320°C whereas the ∼50nm particles had a TN of about 400°C. The high Néel temperature, compared with the bulk MnFe2O4 TN of 300°C, is …

Human Health Impacts Of Contaminants Found In Local Drinking Water Supply, Elizabeth Benson, Dylan Harrison-Atlas
Human Health Impacts Of Contaminants Found In Local Drinking Water Supply, Elizabeth Benson, Dylan Harrison-Atlas
Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)
Many contaminants are currently unregulated by the government and do not have a set limit, known as the Maximum Contaminant Level, which is dictated by cost and the best available treatment technology. The Maximum Contaminant Level Goal, on the other hand, is based solely upon health considerations and is non-enforceable. In addition to being naturally occurring, contaminants may enter drinking water supplies through industrial sources, agricultural practices, urban pollution, sprawl, and water treatment byproducts. Exposure to these contaminants is not limited to ingestion and can also occur through dermal absorption and inhalation in the shower. Health risks for the general …
Green Frog (Rana Clamitans) Calling Habitat Associations: Are Males Selecting Calling Habitat More Closely Associated With Egg-Laying Or Predator Protection?, Denita Weeks
McNair Scholars Journal
Successful reproduction makes individuals evolutionarily fit but requires balancing costs. Literature suggests green frogs defend territories for breeding. Males will call in these territories to attract a mate. Unfortunately, calling may increase susceptibility to predation, requiring males to defend habitat with more protection. In contrast, females select the oviposition sites, potentially based on factors besides predation. Males defending habitat appropriate for oviposition may be more successful. We examined habitat for calling and egglaying to determine whether territoriality is associated with defending oviposition sites or protection from predators. Our results show that calling males are more closely associated with emergent vegetation, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: The purpose of this project was to describe in detail the attitudes, beliefs, and practices of a group of pediatric physical therapists regarding evidence-based practice. In addition, utilizing a collaborative, participatory action research approach, several strategies and outcomes were identified as a means to aid these individuals in improving their ability to use research evidence for clinical decision making.
Methods: The primary investigator and a group of five pediatric physical therapists collaborated to develop and implement strategies and outcomes that were best suited for each individual. During phase I, information was gathered to describe the participants' current beliefs, attitudes, …
Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Dna And Proteins: Force Field Parameter Development Of Small Ligands And Convergence Analysis For Simulations Of Biomolecules, Anne Loccisano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the first part of this dissertation, CHARMM force field parameters for DNA minor groove-binding polyamides were developed. The parameterization involved the subdivision of the polyamides into model compounds, which were calibrated against MP2/6-31G(d) data. To test the new parameters, fourteen 10 ns molecular dynamics crystal simulations have been carried out on a DNA/polyamide complex at low (113K) and high (300K) temperatures. Of the 18 helical parameters examined, only one (stagger) is found to be statistically significant from the crystal structure with a t-test at the 95% confidence level. For the high temperature, stagger is non-significant at the 97% confidence …

Worldwide, there are more than 1,000 species belonging to the Fagaceae. All Fagaceae species are woody plants and are spread throughout the northern hemisphere, from the tropical to the boreal regions. The family comprises seven genera (Govaerts and Frodin 1998), and the number of species is extremely variable among genera: Castanea (12), Castanopsis (100 to 200), Chrysolepis (2), Fagus (11), Lithocarpus (300), Quercus (450 to 600), Trigonobalanus (3).Oaks (Quercus), chestnuts (Castanea), and beeches (Fagus) are widely used in forestry for wood products over the three continents (Asia, Europe, and America) and are important economic …

The Impact Of Mindfulness On Balance, Cognition And Arousal, Susan Elizabeth Chandler
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The control group study investigated the impact of a mindfulness centering technique, taken from the Japanese martial art Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido, on balance and reaction time performance as well as on concurrent levels of galvanic skin response (arousal). Study design and analysis occurred within a social neuroscience framework that included the cultural view of mind, body, and emotion as an integrated whole, and brain research from multiple disciplines revealing the neural integrated organism. Thirty-one subjects were tested in a visual-stimulus reaction time task and in an unstable rocker-board balancing task. Prior to repeating the tests, experimental group participants learned …

Post-Fire Burn Severity And Vegetation Response Following Eight Large Wildfires Across The Western United States, Leigh B. Lentile, Penelope Morgan, Andrew T. Hudak, Michael J. Bobbitt, Sarah A. Lewis, Alistair M.S. Smith, Pete Robichaud
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Vegetation response and burn severity were examined following eight large wildfires that burned in 2003 and 2004: two wildfires in California chaparral, two each in dry and moist mixed-conifer forests in Montana, and two in boreal forests in interior Alaska. Our research objectives were: 1) to characterize one year post-fire vegetation recovery relative to initial fire effects on the soil surface that could potentially serve as indicators of vegetation response (and thus, ultimately longer term post-fire ecosystem recovery), and 2) to use a remotely-sensed indicator of burn severity to describe landscape patterns in fire effects. We correlated one-year post-fire plant …

Growth Substrate Induced Functional Changes Elucidated By Ftir And Raman Spectroscopy In In-Vitro Cultured Human Keratinocytes., Aidan Meade, Fiona Lyng, Peter Knief, Hugh Byrne
Articles
Non-invasive measurements of cellular function in in-vitro cultured cell lines using vibrational spectroscopy require the use of spectroscopic substrates such as quartz, ZnSe and MirrIR etc. These substrates are generally dissimilar to the original in-vivo extracellular environment of a given cell line and are often tolerated poorly by cultured cell lines resulting in morphological and functional changes in the cell. The present study demonstrates various correlations between vibrational spectroscopic analyses and biochemical analyses in the evaluation of the interaction of a normal human epithelial keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) with MirrIR and quartz substrates coated with fibronectin, laminin and gelatin. The …

Domain Relaxation In Langmuir Films, James C. Alexander, Andrew J. Bernoff, Elizabeth K. Mann, J. Adin Mann Jr., Jacob R. Wintersmith '06, Lu Zou
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We report on theoretical studies of molecularly thin Langmuir films on the surface of a quiescent subfluid and qualitatively compare the results to both new and previous experiments. The film covers the entire fluid surface, but domains of different phases are observed. In the absence of external forcing, the compact domains tend to relax to circles, driven by a line tension at the phase boundaries. When stretched (by a transient applied stagnation-point flow or by stirring), a compact domain elongates, creating a bola consisting of two roughly circular reservoirs connected by a thin tether. This shape will then relax slowly …

Behavioural Plasticity In An Ecological Generalist: Microhabitat Use By Western Fence Lizards, Dee A. Asbury, Stephen C. Adolph
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Question: What is the basis for geographic variation in microhabitat use in fence lizards?
Hypothesis: Population differences in microhabitat use reflect behavioural plasticity rather than genetic or experiential differences.
Organisms: Western fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis).
Field site: Three sites (desert, valley, and mountain) in southern California, USA.
Methods: We compared habitat use by free-ranging lizards in three field populations. We also collected lizards from these three populations and studied their microhabitat use in experimental enclosures at a single field site.
Results: In the wild, lizards chose higher and shadier perches at the hottest (desert) site, lower and sunnier perches at …
A Model Of Dna Knotting And Linking, Erica Flapan, Dorothy Buck
A Model Of Dna Knotting And Linking, Erica Flapan, Dorothy Buck
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
We present a model of how DNA knots and links are formed as a result of a single recombination event, or multiple rounds of (processive) recombination events, starting with an unknotted, unlinked, or a (2,m)-torus knot or link substrate. Given these substrates, according to our model all DNA products of a single recombination event or processive recombination fall into a single family of knots and links.

Background: Expert knowledge in journal articles is an important source of data for reconstructing biological pathways and creating new hypotheses. An important need for medical research is to integrate this data with high throughput sources to build useful models that span several scales. Researchers traditionally use mental models of pathways to integrate information and development new hypotheses. Unfortunately, the amount of information is often overwhelming and these are inadequate for predicting the dynamic response of complex pathways. Hierarchical computational models that allow exploration of semi-quantitative dynamics are useful systems biology tools for theoreticians, experimentalists and clinicians and may provide a …
