The Challenges, Prospects, And Promise Of Transpersonal Psychology, Paul F. Cunningham
The Challenges, Prospects, And Promise Of Transpersonal Psychology, Paul F. Cunningham
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Several substantial critiques remain a source of fractionalizing debate within transpersonal
psychology, including the weakness of its definition, whether it is redundant with Wilber’s
integral psychology, whether it is a scientific field, whether it is too metaphysical, whether it
neglects the problem of evil, and what contribution can it make to mainstream psychology.
This article explicates these and related areas of critique and provides a response that identifies
the essential challenges and future prospects of transpersonal psychology. The article also
emphasizes the field’s unique role as a potential bridge connecting psychological science with
the transpersonal psyche in a way that …
Alternative Methods Of Calculating Optimal Timber Rotations: A Critique Of The Stokey/Lucas/Prescott Tree-Cutting Problem, Victor Matheson
Alternative Methods Of Calculating Optimal Timber Rotations: A Critique Of The Stokey/Lucas/Prescott Tree-Cutting Problem, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
The traditional question of optimally deciding when to cut down a tree is among the most commonly posed questions asked of students learning the technique of dynamic programming. This paper shows that the traditional tree-cutting example is improperly formulated when the question of replanting is addressed, derives the proper method of finding optimal harvest length, and applies this method to an empirical forest growth function.

Notable Environmental Features In Some Historical Aerial Photographs From Ashley County, Arkansas, Don C. Bragg, Robert C. Weir Jr.
Notable Environmental Features In Some Historical Aerial Photographs From Ashley County, Arkansas, Don C. Bragg, Robert C. Weir Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A collection of 1939 aerial photographs from Ashley County, Arkansas was analyzed for its environmental information. Taken by the US Department of Defense (USDOD), these images show a number of features now either obscured or completely eliminated over the passage of time. One notable feature is the widespread coverage of "sand blows" in the eastern quarter of the county, suggesting a major soil liquefaction field consistent with strong seismic activity (magnitude 6.0 on the Richter Scale). Also seen in these photographs are the vestiges of the large prairies once found on the Pleistocene terraces of southern and eastern Arkansas. The …
Plant-Feeding Behaviour And Its Efects On The Fitness And Competence Of The Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae), Manda Hortance Manda
Plant-Feeding Behaviour And Its Efects On The Fitness And Competence Of The Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae), Manda Hortance Manda
All PhD Dissertations
Malaria remains a serious threat in sub-Saharan Africa Available control tools are now largely ineffective. Because of the role of vectors in malaria transmission, integrated vector management strategies that are environmentally safe, economically feasible and acceptable to resource-limited communities are one way to achieve effective malaria control. However, adequate knowledge of the biology, behaviour and ecology of the malaria vectors are imperative. Sugar-feeding from plants is a basic requirement for adult mosquitoes, and so far have received little attention. The present study, conducted in Suba district (a malaria endemic area of western Kenya), aimed to investigate the plant-feeding behaviour and …

Testing Theories Of Doctoral Student Persistence At A Hispanic Serving Institution, Gloria S. Vaquera
Testing Theories Of Doctoral Student Persistence At A Hispanic Serving Institution, Gloria S. Vaquera
Sociology
Lilttle empirical work exists which tests theories of doctoral student persistence. Among these studies, there is limited representation of minority students. To counter this state of affairs, this study uses a sample of four doctoral cohorts enrolled at a Hispanic Serving Institution. Focusing on the earlier stages of graduate study, I adapt theories of persistence previously employed for undergraduate students (Hurtado, 1992; Hurtado & Carter, 1997; Tinto, 1993). Testing the impact of student background characteristics. departmental context, and student social and academic integration on persistence, findings are mixed. Strongest support is found for the effect of academic integration, father's education, …

Modulation Of The Trigeminofacial Pathway During Syllabic Speech, Meredith Estep, Steven M. Barlow
Modulation Of The Trigeminofacial Pathway During Syllabic Speech, Meredith Estep, Steven M. Barlow
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
The human orofacial system is richly endowed with low threshold, slowly adapting mechanoreceptors that respond to self-generated movements and external loads. The functional linkage between these afferents and the recruitment of motor units in the lower face during the dynamics of speech is unknown. Mechanically evoked activity in the orbicularis oris muscles was studied in young human female adults (N=10) during a lip force recruitment task associated with the repetition of the nonsense speech utterance “ah-wah.” This speech task involved the recruitment of perioral motor units against an elastic load. A skin contactor probe coupled to a servo-controlled linear motor …
When Babies Aren't Enough: Analysis Of "Motherhood: Who Needs It?", Jessica Hopkins
When Babies Aren't Enough: Analysis Of "Motherhood: Who Needs It?", Jessica Hopkins
e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing
World War II, the Cold War, Vietnam, and the Civil Rights Movement all had a dramatic effect on women and their dissatisfaction with their place in society. The age of the June Cleaver mothers, equipped with their pearl necklaces and homemade apple pies, was dead, and the feminist movement was dawning. One writer, Betty Rollin, sought to change the image of American women forever with her revolutionary article in the September 1970 issue of Look magazine, titled “Motherhood: Who Needs It?”
Jessica Hopkins is a sophomore nursing major. Writing has always been a passion of hers. In her free time, …

Perceptions Of Secondary And Post-Secondary Interdisciplinary Faculty On Cisip Professional Development: A Teacher Learning Community Designing Scientific Classroom Discourse Communities, Elizabeth B. Lewis, Dale R. Baker, Senay Yaşar-Purzer, Sibel Uysal
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Presentations
This study summarizes semi-structured focus group exit interviews with Communication in Science Inquiry Project (CISIP) participants, experienced secondary and post-secondary science, English, and ELL faculty. CISIP is an NSF-funded initiative designed to meet the need for highly qualified teachers and science education reform. The main purpose of the larger study was to understand teachers’ application, in teams, of the CISIP model during the three-week summer institute. The focus group interviews helped to triangulate researchers’ observations with the participants’ perceptions. Participants expressed favorable attitudes toward their extended CISIP experience, at least one year’s participation before the summer institute. All acknowledged the …
Reports Of Transpersonal Experiences By Non-Native Practitioners Of The Native American Sweat Lodge Ceremony: A Critical Appraisal, Whit Hibbard
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Interviews with 30 experienced non-native practitioners of the Native American sweat lodge
ceremony revealed 184 reports of transpersonal experiences. Interview questions sought to (a)
disclose how practitioners discern or critique their own experiences, (b) consider alternative
explanations for practitioners’ experiences, and (c) critically reflect on the sweat lodge
ceremony per se as a spiritual practice. It was found that practitioners generally (a) interpreted
their experiences as trustworthy interactions with a spiritual reality, (b) did not seriously
consider alternative explanations for their experiences, and (c) neglected to reflect critically
on the sweat lodge ceremony per se as a spiritual practice.
Structure And Properties Of Chicken Feather Barbs As Natural Protein Fibers, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang
Structure And Properties Of Chicken Feather Barbs As Natural Protein Fibers, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang
Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
The structure and properties of chicken feather barbs makes them unique fibers preferable for several applications. The presence of hollow honeycomb structures, their low density, high flexibility and possible structural interaction with other fibers when made into products such as textiles provides them unique properties unlike any other natural or synthetic fibers. No literature is available on the physical structure and tensile properties of chicken feather barbs. In this study, we report the physical and morphological structure and the properties of chicken feather barbs for potential use as natural protein fibers. The morphological structure of chicken feather barbs is similar …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The Chariton Conglomerate is a quartz limestone conglomerate of Pennsylvanian age found in six exposures in southern Iowa and three exposures in northern Missouri. Distinctive features of the exposures in Iowa include quartz granules and rounded crinoid columnals. The objective of this study was to determine whether the quartz clasts could have originated in the crystalline rocks of Minnesota or Wisconsin. The average paleocurrent direction measured in interbedded sandstones was 178° (S.D. = 35 °). The average roundness of 75 crinoid columnals extracted from four exposures in Iowa was 30% (S.D. = 14%), defined as
roundness(%) = (D-d)/D x 100, …
Numerical Methods For The Stochastic Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes Equations, Alejandro Garcia, J. B. Bell, S. Williams
Numerical Methods For The Stochastic Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes Equations, Alejandro Garcia, J. B. Bell, S. Williams
Faculty Publications
The Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes (LLNS) equations incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by using stochastic fluxes. This paper examines explicit Eulerian discretizations of the full LLNS equations. Several computational fluid dynamics approaches are considered (including MacCormack’s two-step Lax-Wendroff scheme and the piecewise parabolic method) and are found to give good results for the variance of momentum fluctuations. However, neither of these schemes accurately reproduces the fluctuations in energy or density. We introduce a conservative centered scheme with a third-order Runge-Kutta temporal integrator that does accurately produce fluctuations in density, energy, and momentum. A variety of numerical tests, including the random walk …

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications
Counselors providing treatment within the juvenile justice system encounter numerous challenges that are inherent in working with this population. One of the challenges includes providing treatment to adolescents who are entering the juvenile justice system with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Given the challenges, creative interventions that enhance client motivation and the therapeutic relationship are especially needed. The purpose of this article is to propose a creative intervention that may enhance the therapeutic relationship, increase client investment in treatment. and facilitate client self-disclosure. A case illustration will be used to illustrate the intervention.
