Utah Prairie Dog Habitat Evaluation Guide, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Environmental Defense Jan 2007

Utah Prairie Dog Habitat Evaluation Guide, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Environmental Defense

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The Utah prairie dog (Cynomys parvidens) (UPD) is listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and exists only in southwestern Utah. UPD numbers and range have declined dramatically since settlement of Utah because of conversion of rangeland to cropland, urban development, fire suppression, improper grazing, drought, and introduced sylvatic plague (Yersina pestis). As of this writing, approximately 75% of all Utah prairie dogs inhabit private lands. This fact highlights the need to encourage farmers and ranchers to manage UPD habitat on their property in order to move the species closer to recovery. This guide provides technical …

Factors Influencing Epiphytic Lichen Communities In Aspen-Associated Forests Of The Bear River Range, Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers Jan 2007

Factors Influencing Epiphytic Lichen Communities In Aspen-Associated Forests Of The Bear River Range, Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

In western North America, quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is the most common hardwood in montane landscapes. Fire suppression, grazing, wildlife management practices, and climate patterns of the past century are some of the threats to aspen coverage in this region. Researchers are concerned that aspen-dependent species may be losing habitat, thereby threatening their long-term local and regional viability. Though lichens have a rich history as air pollution indicators, I believe that they may also be useful as a metric of community diversity associated with habitat change. To date, few studies have specifically examined the status of aspen’s epiphytic lichen …

Aphis’ Plant Inspection Stations: Protecting American Agriculture From Foreign Pests And Diseases, United States Department Fo Agriculture, Animal And Plant Health Inspection Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

In today’s global marketplace, the volume of international trade brings increased potential for the introduction of foreign pests, diseases, and noxious weeds that could threaten the safety of American agriculture. The results of such introductions can have a devastating effect on the U.S. food supply, damage our natural resources, and cost hundreds of millions of dollars in eradication and control measures that ultimately result in higher priced agricultural products for the consumer.

Rapid Characterization Of The Fatty Acyl Composition Of Complex Lipids By Collision-Induced Dissociation Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, Xuemin Wang, Steven Wynn Esch, Pamela Tamura, Alexis Sparks, Mary Roth, Shivakumar Devaiah, Ernst Heinz, Todd Williams, Ruth Welti

Biology Department Faculty Works

Profiling of leaf extracts from mutants of Arabidopsis with defects in lipid desaturation demonstrates the utility of collision-induced dissociation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (CID-TOF MS) for screening biological samples for fatty acid compositional alterations. CID-TOF MS uses the collision cell of a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer to simultaneously fragment all of the ions produced by an ionization source. Electrospray ionization CID-TOF MS in the negative mode can be used to analyze fatty acyl anions derived from complex lipids as well as free fatty acids. Although acyl anion yield is shown to be a function of the lipid class and the position …

Modulation Of Radiation Responses By Pre-Exposure To Irradiated Cell Conditioned Medium, Paula Maguire, Carmel Mothersill, B. Mcclean, C. Seymour, Fiona Lyng

Articles

The aim of this study was to investigate whether exposure of HPV-G cells to irradiated cell conditioned medium (ICCM) could induce an adaptive response if the cells were subsequently challenged with a higher ICCM dose. Clonogenic survival and major steps in the cascade leading to apoptosis, such as calcium influx and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, were examined to determine whether these events could be modified by giving a priming dose of ICCM before the challenge dose. Clonogenic survival data indicated an ICCMinduced adaptive response in HPV-G cells ‘‘primed’’ with 5 mGy or 0.5 Gy ICCM for 24 h and …

Biometrics: Weighing Convenience And National Security Against Your Privacy, Lauren D. Adkins Jan 2007

Biometrics: Weighing Convenience And National Security Against Your Privacy, Lauren D. Adkins

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

The biometric identifier relies on an individual's unique biological information such as a hand, iris, fingerprint, facial or voice print. When used for verification purposes, a "one-to-one" match is generated in under one second. Biometric technology can substantially improve national security by identifying and verifying individuals in a number of different contexts, providing security in ways that exceed current identification technology and limiting access to areas where security breaches are especially high, such as airport tarmacs and critical infrastructure facilities. At the same time, a legitimate public concern exists concerning the misuse of biometric technology to invade or violate personal …

Pharmaceutical Lemons: Innovation And Regulation In The Drug Industry, Ariel Katz Jan 2007

Pharmaceutical Lemons: Innovation And Regulation In The Drug Industry, Ariel Katz

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Before a new drug can be marketed, the Food and Drug Administration must be satisfied that it is safe and effective. According to conventional wisdom, the cost and delay involved in this process diminish the incentives to invest in the development of new drugs. Accordingly, several reforms aimed at restoring such incentives have been implemented or advocated. This Article challenges the central argument that drug regulation and drug innovation are necessarily at odds with one another. Although intuitively appealing, the argument that drug regulation negatively affects the incentives to innovate does not fully capture the role that regulation plays in …

Promoting Undergraduate Research In Mathematics At The University Of Nebraska – Lincoln, Judy L. Walker, Glenn Ledder, Richard Rebarber, Gordon S. Woodward

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL) has several programs which promote undergraduate research in a variety of ways. Two of these are summer programs which draw from a national applicant pool: The Nebraska REU in Applied Mathematics (Section 1) is a traditional NSF-funded REU site, and Nebraska IMMERSE (Section 2) offers a summer “bridge” program (with a research bent) for students about to start graduate school in mathematics. IMMERSE is a relatively new program, started in 2004 as part of the department’s Mentoring through Critical Transition Points (MCTP) grant from NSF. The MCTP grant …

Enhanced Mutagenesis Of Salmonella Tester Strains Due To Deletion Of Genes Other Than Uvrb, Carol D. Swartz, Nick Parks, David M. Umbach, William O. Ward, Roel M. Schaaper, David M. Demarini Jan 2007

Enhanced Mutagenesis Of Salmonella Tester Strains Due To Deletion Of Genes Other Than Uvrb, Carol D. Swartz, Nick Parks, David M. Umbach, William O. Ward, Roel M. Schaaper, David M. Demarini

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The standard Salmonella mutagenicity (Ames) tester strains are missing 15–119 genes due to the extended Δ(gal-bio-uvrB) mutations that render the strains excision-repair deficient (ΔuvrB). We constructed strains of Salmonella that are homologous to tester strains TA98 and TA100 except that in place of the uvrB deletion, they contain single-gene defects in either uvrB, moaA, moeA, or both uvrB and moeA. We then tested the following mutagens in these strains: 2-acetylaminofluorene, Glu-P-1, 4-aminobiphenyl, benzo[a]pyrene, MX, 1-nitropyrene, 6-hydroxylaminopurine (HAP), and 2-amino-6-hydroxylaminopurine (AHAP). We confirmed in Salmonella a previous finding in Escherichia coli that the enhanced mutagenicity of the purine analogues HAP and …

A Taxonomic Investigation Of The Black Ratsnake, Elaphe O. Obsoleta (Say) [Reptilia, Squamata, Colubridae], In West Virginia Using Morphometric Analyses, Adam M. Mann Jan 2007

A Taxonomic Investigation Of The Black Ratsnake, Elaphe O. Obsoleta (Say) [Reptilia, Squamata, Colubridae], In West Virginia Using Morphometric Analyses, Adam M. Mann

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A recent genetic study by Frank T. Burbrink (2000) determined that the common Black Ratsnake, Elaphe o. obsoleta, evolved from three separate evolutionary lineages and can no longer be classified under a single species name. The newly assigned species, which possess ranges that are separated into three regions of the eastern United States by geologic features such as rivers and mountains, are also said to possess distinct morphologic characteristics (Burbrink, 2001). This thesis study was initiated to mirror Burbrink’s previous morphometric study and augment a previous lack of specimen data from West Virginia. Black Ratsnake museum specimens, collected from ranges …

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose. Currently, stationary bicycles do not incorporate exercise for the abdominal and low back musculature. An experimental stationary bicycle, the Magnus Cycle, has been developed to increase trunk muscle activation and, at the same time, provide aerobic conditioning. The purpose of this study is to assess the activity of the rectus abdominus, external oblique, erector spinae, rectus femoris and biceps femoris muscles during a stationary cycling setting and during a tilt-in-space setting of the Magnus Cycle.

Subjects. Sixteen subjects, both men and women, between the ages of 18 and 30 participated in this study.

Methods. Surface electromyography (EMG) …

A Putative Approach For Influencing Stomatal Density By Over-Expressing Nadp-Dependent Malic Enzyme In Arabidopsis, Michael M. Gabor Jan 2007

A Putative Approach For Influencing Stomatal Density By Over-Expressing Nadp-Dependent Malic Enzyme In Arabidopsis, Michael M. Gabor

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Stomata are leaf structures critical for plant survival because they modulate the rate of transpiration. This study will examine a possible mode for regulating stomatal density by over-expressing NADP-dependent malic enzyme (NADP-ME), which is thought to deplete the counter-anion pool in Arabidopsis thaliana guard cells. It was hypothesized that over-expressing NADP-ME in Arabidopsis will elevate stomatal density. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to determine if any differences exist in numbers of stomatal complexes among transgenic lines and wild-type Arabidopsis. The results indicated a significant increase in stomatal numbers among some transgenic plant lines relative to the wild-type. Second, a series …

Sex Offenders, Sexuality, And Social Control: A Case Study In The Social Construction Of A Social Problem, Lisa Marie Kruse Jan 2007

Sex Offenders, Sexuality, And Social Control: A Case Study In The Social Construction Of A Social Problem, Lisa Marie Kruse

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Legislation regarding sex offenses is often passed swiftly with little to no evaluation of the effectiveness of such policies on preventing recidivism and protecting the public. Further, little criticism is raised despite overwhelming evidence that sex offender registration and community notification is ineffective and has many negative consequences. The societal reaction is created through moral panics resulting in views that are not always reflective of the nature of the problem. In effect, the policies put into place in the name of declaring war on the deviant behavior reflect these views and do not target the specific problem.

While the first …

Regulation Of Hyphal Morphogenesis By Cdc42 And Rac1 Homologues In Aspergillus Nidulans, Aleksandra Virag, Maurice P. Lee, Haoyu Si, Steven D. Harris Jan 2007

Regulation Of Hyphal Morphogenesis By Cdc42 And Rac1 Homologues In Aspergillus Nidulans, Aleksandra Virag, Maurice P. Lee, Haoyu Si, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The ability of filamentous fungi to form hyphae requires the establishment and maintenance of a stable polarity axis. Based on studies in yeasts and animals, the GTPases Cdc42 and Rac1 are presumed to play a central role in organizing the morphogenetic machinery to enable axis formation and stabilization. Here, we report that Cdc42 (ModA) and Rac1 (RacA) share an overlapping function required for polarity establishment in Aspergillus nidulans. Nevertheless, Cdc42 appears to have a more important role in hyphal morphogenesis in that it alone is required for the timely formation of lateral branches. In addition, we provide genetic evidence …

Structure And Biosynthesis Of Heat-Stable Antifungal Factor (Hsaf), A Broad-Spectrum Antimycotic With A Novel Mode Of Action, Fengan Yu, Kathia Zaleta-Rivera, Xiangcheng Zhu, Justin Huffman, Jeffrey C. Millet, Steven D. Harris, Gary Yuen, Xing-Cong Li, Liangcheng Du

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

A screen for antifungal compounds from Lysobacter enzymogenes strain C3, a bacterial biological control agent of fungal diseases, has previously led to the isolation of heat-stable antifungal factor (HSAF). HSAF exhibits inhibitory activities against a wide range of fungal species and shows a novel mode of antifungal action by disrupting the biosynthesis of a distinct group of sphingolipids. We have now determined the chemical structure of HSAF, which is identical to that of dihydromaltophilin, an antifungal metabolite with a unique macrocyclic lactam system containing a tetramic acid moiety and a 5,5,6-tricyclic skeleton. We have also identified the genetic locus responsible …

Dietary Overlap Of An Alien And Native Carnivore On San Clemente Island, California, R. Brand Phillips, Clark S. Winchell, Robert H. Schmidt

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Predation by feral cats (Felis catus) is recognized as a major threat to native fauna worldwide, but the competitive effects of cats on native species have not been extensively studied. Cats occur on San Clemente Island, California, in sympatry with endemic island foxes (Urocyon littoralis clementae). We examined diets of cats and island foxes between years, seasons, and habitats to assess the potential for resource competition between the 2 species. Analysis of 602 cat and 958 fox feces revealed a high level of dietary overlap (O = 0.93) and relatively narrow niche breadths for both …

Development Of An Assay To Determine Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In The Prion Gene For The Genetic Diagnosis Of Relative Susceptibility To Classical Scrapie In Sheep, Mary Lynn Johnson, Jessica M. Evoniuk, Charles L. Stoltenow, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Dale A. Redmer Jan 2007

Redmer

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The objective of this study was to develop a reliable Taqman® 5' Nuclease Assay for genotyping sheep for scrapie susceptibility. The sheep prion gene contains 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that may mediate resistance to classical scrapie, one at codon 136, alanine (A) or valine (V), and another at codon 171, arginine (R) or glutamine (Q). The R allele appears to confer resistance to classical scrapie, with the AA136 RR171 genotype the most resistant to scrapie and QR171 only rarely infected in the US sheep population. The Assays by DesignSM protocol was used for development of …

Synthesis And Antimalarial Activity Of New Isotebuquine Analogues, Olga V. Miroshnikova, Thomas H. Hudson, Lucia Gerena, Dennis E. Kyle, Ai J. Lin Jan 2007

Synthesis And Antimalarial Activity Of New Isotebuquine Analogues, Olga V. Miroshnikova, Thomas H. Hudson, Lucia Gerena, Dennis E. Kyle, Ai J. Lin

United States Army: Publications

Amodiaquine (AQ) and tebuquine are 4-aminoquinoline antimalarials with Mannich base side chain and are highly effective against chloroquine (CQ)-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Clinical use of AQ has been severely restricted due to hepatoxicity and agranulocytosis side effects associated with its long term use. Lysosomal accumulation and bioactivation to generate reactive quinoneimine metabolite are implicated to be the cause of the observed AQ toxicities. To avoid the quinoneimine formation and thus the toxicity, a series of isotebuquine analogues and their Nω-oxides with hydroxy group meta to the amino rather than in para position of the aniline moiety …

An Ab Initio Investigation On The Endohedral Metallofullerene Gd 3 N – C 80, M. C. Qian, S. N. Khanna Jan 2007

An Ab Initio Investigation On The Endohedral Metallofullerene Gd 3 N – C 80, M. C. Qian, S. N. Khanna

Physics Publications

First-principles electronic structure studies on the ground state geometry and electronic and magnetic properties of bare and hydrogen coated metallofullerene Gd3N–C80 have been carried out within a density functional formalism. The correlation effects are incorporated either through a generalized gradient corrected functional or through an on-site Coulomb interaction (LDA+U). It is shown that the bare Gd3N–C80 possess a ferromagnetic ground state with a large spin moment of 21μB that is highly stable against spin fluctuations. The simulated Raman spectrum shows that the low-energy peaks are contributed by the floppy movement of N atom. As to the effect of addition of …
