History And Behavioral Ecology During The Middle-Late Transition On The Central California Coast: Findings From The Coon Creek Site (Ca-Slo-9), San Luis Obispo County, Brian F. Codding, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

As the focus of intense debate concerning the possible effects of environmental variability on Native populations, the Middle-Late Transition (MLT) is an exceptionally important period in California prehistory. Recent salvage excavations at the Coon Creek Site (CA-SLO-9) on the San Luis Obispo County coast revealed a single, highly discrete component dating cal A.D.900–1300 which is largely synchronous with most definitions of the MLT. With a recovery volume of 23.2 m3, this is the first component to yield artifact and faunal assemblages substantive enough to establish the culture historical markers for this period in this region, and to define …

Review Of Methods For Modelling Systems Evolution, Charles F. Nicholson Jan 2007

Review Of Methods For Modelling Systems Evolution, Charles F. Nicholson

Agribusiness

Acceleration of economic, technological, social, and environmental change challenge decision-makers of various kinds to learn at increasing rates, and at the same time, the complexity of the dynamic systems in which we live is growing (Sterman 2000). In agriculture and international development contexts, there are often significant delays in the development and implementation of technologies and policies, and agriculture-based livelihood systems are in constant and sometimes rapid evolution. In order to make technologies and policies better match the future state of these systems, it is necessary to better understand the likely evolution of agricultural systems. The goal of these efforts …

Proximate Developmental Mediators Of Sexual Dimorphism In Size: Case Studies From Squamate Reptiles, Henry B. John‐Alder, Robert M. Cox, Emily N. Taylor Jan 2007

Proximate Developmental Mediators Of Sexual Dimorphism In Size: Case Studies From Squamate Reptiles, Henry B. John‐Alder, Robert M. Cox, Emily N. Taylor

Biological Sciences

Sexual dimorphism in size (sexual size dimorphism; SSD) is nearly ubiquitous, but the relative importance of genetic versus environmental control of SSD is not known for most species. We investigated proximate determinants of SSD in several species of squamate reptiles, including three species of Sceloporus lizards and the diamond‐backed rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox). In natural populations of these species, SSD is caused by sexual differences in age‐specific growth. Males and females, however, may often share similar potentials for growth: growth is strongly responsive to the availability of food, and sexual differences in growth can be greatly suppressed or completely …

Nontarget Effects Of The Mosquito Adulticide Pyrethrin Applied Aerially During A West Nile Virus Outbreak In An Urban California Environment, Walter M. Boyce, Sharon P. Lawler, Jennifer M. Nontarget Effects Of The Mosquito Adulticide Pyrethrin Applied Aerially During A West Nile Virus Outbreak In An Urban California Environment, Walter M. Boyce, Sharon P. Lawler, Jennifer M. Schultz, Shannon J. Mccauley, Lynn S. Kimsey, Michael K. Niemela, Carrie F. Nielsen, William K. Reisen

Biological Sciences

In August 2006, a pyrethrin insecticide synergized with piperonyl butoxide (EverGreen Crop Protection EC 60-6, McLaughlin Gormley King Company, Golden Valley, MN) was sprayed in ultralow volumes over the city of Davis, CA, by the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District to control mosquitoes transmitting West Nile virus. Concurrently, we evaluated the impact of the insecticide on nontarget arthropods by 1) comparing mortality of treatment and control groups of sentinel arthropods, and 2) measuring the diversity and abundance of dead arthropods found on treatment and control tarps placed on the ground. We found no effect of spraying on nontarget sentinel …

Indo-Fijian Children’S Bmi In The Context Of Urbanization, Embodied Capital, And Food Choice Trade-Offs, Dawn B. Neill Jan 2007

Indo-Fijian Children’S Bmi In The Context Of Urbanization, Embodied Capital, And Food Choice Trade-Offs, Dawn B. Neill

Social Sciences

Health research has shown that overweight and obesity in children and adults are becoming significant public health problems in the developing world. Evidence suggests that this phenomenon is more marked in urban than rural areas and may be associated with modernization. However, the underlying reasons for this nutrition transition remain unclear. Dietary shifts, often in conjunction with income and time constraints in urban environments, may entail a greater reliance on more convenient sugar and fat-dense food. Also, the necessity of labor-intensive agricultural work to meet rural subsistence needs is supplanted in urban environments by sedentary work. This paper extends the …

Compartmentalization Of The Broad-Range Phospholipase C Activity To The Spreading Vacuole Is Critical For Listeria Monocytogenes Virulence, P.S. Marie Yeung, Yoojin Na, Amanda J. Kreuder, Helene Marquis Jan 2007

Compartmentalization Of The Broad-Range Phospholipase C Activity To The Spreading Vacuole Is Critical For Listeria Monocytogenes Virulence, P.S. Marie Yeung, Yoojin Na, Amanda J. Kreuder, Helene Marquis

Biological Sciences

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterial pathogen that multipliesin the cytosol of host cells and spreads directly from cellto cell by using an actin-based mechanism of motility. The broad-rangephospholipase C (PC-PLC) of L. monocytogenes contributes tobacterial escape from vacuoles formed upon cell-to-cell spread.PC-PLC is made as an inactive proenzyme whose activation requirescleavage of an N-terminal propeptide. During infection, PC-PLCis activated specifically in acidified vacuoles. To assess theimportance of compartmentalizing PC-PLC activity during infection,we created a mutant that makes constitutively active PC-PLC(the plcBpro mutant). Results from intracellular growth andcell-to-cell spread assays showed that the plcBpro mutant wassensitive to gentamicin, suggesting …

Visual Communication And The Map: How Maps As Visual Objects Convey Meaning In Specific Contexts, Amy Propen

English

This article reports the results of a case study of two maps, produced by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Natural Resources Defense Council, and their involvement in a federal court case over the deployment of the Navy's low-frequency active sonar. Borrowing from Kress and van Leeuwen's (1996) approach to visual analysis, Turnbull's (1989) understanding of the map, and Latour's (1990) understanding of how visuals work in social contexts, the article offers an analytical approach to studying maps as powerful visual, rhetorical objects.

Correlated Evolution Of Genome Size And Seed Mass, Jeremy M. Beaulieu, Angela T. Moles, Ilia J. Leitch, Michael D. Bennett, John B. Dickie, Charles A. Knight Jan 2007

Correlated Evolution Of Genome Size And Seed Mass, Jeremy M. Beaulieu, Angela T. Moles, Ilia J. Leitch, Michael D. Bennett, John B. Dickie, Charles A. Knight

Biological Sciences

• Previous investigators have identified strong positive relationships between genome size and seed mass within species, and across species from the same genus and family. • Here, we make the first broad-scale quantification of this relationship, using data for 1222 species, from 139 families and 48 orders. We analyzed the relationship between genome size and seed mass using a statistical framework that included four different tests. • A quadratic relationship between genome size and seed mass appeared to be driven by the large genome/seed mass gymnosperms and the many small genome size/large seed mass angiosperms. Very small seeds were never …

Consequences Of A Genetic Bottleneck In California Condors: A Mitochondrial Dna Perspective, Mary S. Adams, Francis X. Villablanca Jan 2007

Consequences Of A Genetic Bottleneck In California Condors: A Mitochondrial Dna Perspective, Mary S. Adams, Francis X. Villablanca

Biological Sciences

The California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) has recently survived a severe population bottleneck. The entire population was reduced to 27 individuals in 1982. The number of genetic founders was even smaller. We obtained 482 base pairs of DNA sequence from the mitochondrial control region (CR) of all founder individuals that potentially represented unique maternal haplotypes. Four unique haplotypes were present in the genetic founders. One of these haplotypes is unique to Topatopa, a male brought into captivity in 1967, whose haplotype will not persist in the future population. Haplotype diversity (h) was reduced by 25% between the founder population …

Evaluation Of A Tissue Culture-Based Approach For Differentiating Between Virulent And Avirulent Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Strains Based On Cytotoxicity, P.S. Marie Yeung, Martin Wiedmann, Kathryn J. Boor Jan 2007

Evaluation Of A Tissue Culture-Based Approach For Differentiating Between Virulent And Avirulent Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Strains Based On Cytotoxicity, P.S. Marie Yeung, Martin Wiedmann, Kathryn J. Boor

Biological Sciences

The ability of only a subset of Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains to cause human infection underscores the need for an analytical method that can effectively differentiate between pathogenic strains and those that do not cause disease. We tested the feasibility of a tissue culture-based assay to determine whether clinical isolates could be differentiated from nonclinical isolates based on relative isolate cytopathogenicity. To screen for cytotoxic capability, we measured relative extracellular lactate dehydrogenase as an indicator of host cell damage in five different mammalian cell lines in the presence of V. parahaemolyticus. Isolates originating from clinical sources exhibited 15.5 to 59.3% …

Faculty Books and Monographs

Chapter, Virtual Reality for Robotic Laparoscopic Surgical Training, co-authored by Nicholas Stergiou, UNO faculty member.

Our culture is obsessed with design. Sometimes designers can fuse utility and fantasy to make the mundane appear fresh—a cosmetic repackaging of the same old thing. Because of this, medicine—grounded in the unforgiving realities of the scientific method and peer review, and of flesh, blood, and pain—can sometimes confuse “design” with mere “prettifying.” Design solves real problems, however. This collection of papers underwrites the importance of design for the MMVR community, within three different environments: in vivo, in vitro and in silico. in vivo: we …

Eddy Correlation Measurements Of The Air/Sea Flux Of Dimethylsulfide Over The North Pacific Ocean, Christa A. Marandino, Warren J. De Bruyn, Scott D. Miller, Eric S. Saltzman

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Shipboard measurements of air/sea fluxes and sea surface concentrations of dimethylsulfide (DMS) were made over the tropical and midlatitude North Pacific Ocean. Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry was used to measure DMS levels in ambient air and in air equilibrated with surface seawater drawn from a depth of 5 m. Air/sea fluxes were obtained using eddy covariance. Corrections and uncertainties involved in the calculation of fluxes from shipboard data are discussed. The surface ocean DMS concentrations measured during this study ranged from 1 to 10 nM, and atmospheric mixing ratios ranged from 20 to 1000 ppt. Air/sea fluxes ranged …

Structural Stability And Endonuclease Activity Of Pi-Scei Gfp-Fusion Protein, Ali Senejani, Peter J. Gogarten Jan 2007

Structural Stability And Endonuclease Activity Of Pi-Scei Gfp-Fusion Protein, Ali Senejani, Peter J. Gogarten

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications

Homing endonucleases are site-specific and rare cutting endonucleases often encoded by intron or intein containing genes. They lead to the rapid spread of the genetic element that hosts them by a process termed ‘homing’; and ultimately the allele containing the element will be fixed in the population. PI-SceI, an endonuclease encoded as a protein insert or intein within the yeast V-ATPase catalytic subunit encoding gene (vma1), is among the best characterized homing endonucleases. The structures of the Sce VMA1 intein and of the intein bound to its target site are known. Extensive biochemical studies performed on the PI-SceI enzyme provide …
