Elder Research: Filling An Important Gap In Psychology And Law, Eve M. Brank Jan 2007

Elder Research: Filling An Important Gap In Psychology And Law, Eve M. Brank

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In the past few decades, psychology-law as a discipline has made great strides in understanding and guiding public policies on issues related to eyewitnesses, confessions, juries, judges, juveniles, the mentally ill, and many others. As a field, we have largely neglected the oldest subset of the population, with only a few scholars focusing specifically on elder issues or systematically including elders in their studies. The current article is a call to research. It first outlines why elders should be considered as a specific subset of the population even though they have not been an area of focus in the field. …

Preferred Developmental Disabilties Among Prospective Adoptive Parents, Brooke Noelle Larson Jan 2007

Preferred Developmental Disabilties Among Prospective Adoptive Parents, Brooke Noelle Larson

Theses Digitization Project

The Mad Rhetoric: Toward A Rigor On Radical Creativity And Its Function In Consciousness As A Communicative Principle, Eugene David Hetzel

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis explores three creative works, "The music of Erich Zann" by H.P. Lovecraft; the film "Eraserhead" by David Lynch; and the "Self-Portrait (blue)" by Vincent Van Gogh, as examples of different forms of mad rhetorics as a way in which to demonstrate the application of the theory of "mad rhetorics" and the role "radical creativity" plays in the construction of mad rhetorics by "mad rhetors" play in society.

Caring Globally: Jane Addams, World War One, And International Hunger, Marilyn Fischer Jan 2007

Caring Globally: Jane Addams, World War One, And International Hunger, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Several feminist philosophers, including Virginia Held, Joan Tronto, and Fiona Robinson, see the need for, and the potential of, care ethics for achieving far-reaching political and even global transformation. Tronto recommends that care be used as "a basis for political change" and a "strategy for organizing" (Tronto 1993, 175). Held advocates that "the ethics of care should transform international politics and relations between states as well as within them" (Held 2006, 161).

During and immediately after World War One, Jane Addams attempted to do just that. She sought to bring perspectives and moral sensibilities that have since been theorized in …

Advancing Transdisciplinary And Translational Research Practice: Issues And Models Of Doctoral Education In Public Health, Linda Neuhauser, Dawn M. Richardson, Sonja Mackenzie, Meredith Minkler

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Finding solutions to complex health problems, such as obesity, violence, and climate change, will require radical changes in cross-disciplinary education, research, and practice. The fundamental determinants of health include many interrelated factors such as poverty, culture, education, environment, and government policies. However, traditional public health training has tended to focus more narrowly on diseases and risk factors, and has not adequately leveraged the rich contributions of sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, communication, political science, and other disciplines. Further, students are often not sufficiently trained to work across sectors to translate research findings into effective, large-scale sustainable actions. During the past 2 …

The Role Of Behavioral Dynamics In Determining The Patch Distributions Of Interacting Species, Peter A. Abrams, Ross Cressman, Vlastimil Křivan Jan 2007

The Role Of Behavioral Dynamics In Determining The Patch Distributions Of Interacting Species, Peter A. Abrams, Ross Cressman, Vlastimil Křivan

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The effect of the behavioral dynamics of movement on the population dynamics of interacting species in multipatch systems is studied. The behavioral dynamics of habitat choice used in a range of previous models are reviewed. There is very limited empirical evidence for distinguishing between these different models, but they differ in important ways, and many lack properties that would guarantee stability of an ideal free distribution in a single-species system. The importance of finding out more about movement dynamics in multispecies systems is shown by an analysis of the effect of movement rules on the dynamics of a particular two-species–two-patch …

Accounting For The Effect Of Internal Viscosity In Dumbbell Models For Polymeric Fluids And Relaxation Of Dna, Xiao-Dong Yang, Roderick V.N. Melnik Jan 2007

Accounting For The Effect Of Internal Viscosity In Dumbbell Models For Polymeric Fluids And Relaxation Of Dna, Xiao-Dong Yang, Roderick V.N. Melnik

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The coarse-graining approach is one of the most important mod- eling methods in research of long-chain polymers such as DNA molecules. The dumbbell model is a simple but e±cient way to describe the behavior of polymers in solutions. In this paper, the dumbbell model with internal viscosity (IV) for concentrated polymeric liquids is analyzed for the steady-state and time-dependent elongational flow and steady-state shear °ow. In the elongational flow case, by analyzing the governing ordinary di®erential equations the contribution of the IV to the stress tensor is discussed for fluids subjected to a sudden elongational jerk. In the shear °ow …

The Ground We Walk On: An Effective Analogy For Exploring Soil Characteristics, Sally Wilson, Meher Vani Bojja Jan 2007

The Ground We Walk On: An Effective Analogy For Exploring Soil Characteristics, Sally Wilson, Meher Vani Bojja

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Soil is common to all of us, so common that few people think about it and its importance in our everyday lives. The activity presented here provides an analogy useful for helping students design experiments and explore how soil particle size affects its behavior. Originally a simple “cookbook” demonstration for community college students, we restructured it to be more inquiry oriented so that it mentally engages students and promotes several important goals for science teaching. We believe the modified activity is applicable across a broad grade/age range, perhaps from upper elementary to some introductory post-secondary science courses. This activity promotes …

Give Them What They Want? The Permissibility Of Pediatric Placebo-Controlled Trials Under The Best Pharmaceuticals For Children Act, Holly Fernandez Lynch

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article discusses the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act and the FDA's request for placebo-controlled studies of drugs to treat OCD and depression in children. First, the article explains the need to test drugs in children and examines the reasons this testing has not occurred. Next, the article describes the legislative and administrative responses to remedy this lack of research and assesses the ethics and legality of their implementation. The article concludes that these initiatives are legally and ethically acceptable until a safe and effective treatment is determined--at which point the use of placebos in pediatric testing must be replaced …

Effects Of Retinoic Acid On Beta-Catenin Transcriptional Activity In Melanoma Cells, Fung Chan Jan 2007

Effects Of Retinoic Acid On Beta-Catenin Transcriptional Activity In Melanoma Cells, Fung Chan

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and its incidence has been increasing in the United States. Most melanomas are resistant to current chemotherapies; therefore, understanding the mechanism of melanomagenesis is beneficial to treatment of the diseases. Accumulation of β-catenin has been shown in colon and other cancers, including melanomas, but the transcriptional role of β-catenin in melanomas is still unclear. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is an anti-tumor agent that has an inhibitory effect on β-catenin, but this effect has not been studied in melanomas. It has been shown that Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), a melanocyte specific protein, …
