Regulation Of Steroid Sulfatase By Glucocorticoids In Human Breast Cancer And Bone Cancer Cell Lines, Suman Barua Jan 2007

Regulation Of Steroid Sulfatase By Glucocorticoids In Human Breast Cancer And Bone Cancer Cell Lines, Suman Barua

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Steroid sulfatase is an enzyme involved in the conversion of active estrogens and androgens from inactive systemic precursors such as estrone sulfate (E1S) and dehydropiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS). This protein is known to play a role in the fetal-adrenal endocrine axis during pregnancy and it is suspected to have additional physiological functions. Steroid sulfatase has also been implicated in stimulation of hormone-dependent cancers; consequently, a substantial amount of research has been undertaken to develop inhibitors of this enzyme. By comparison, relatively little is known about the regulation of steroid sulfatase. Previous work in our lab had suggested that glucocorticoids may affect …

Growing Cucumbers In Protected Cultivation In Western Australia, John Burt Jan 2007

Growing Cucumbers In Protected Cultivation In Western Australia, John Burt

All other publications

There are over 20 growers who produce cucumbers under protected cultivation in Western Australia, ranging from Manjimup in the South-West to Geraldton and Carnarvon. They mainly grow these crops hydroponically in greenhouses. There is also some production under shadecloth and some crops are grown in soil. There are two types of cucumbers grown under protected cultivation. The Continental or burpless cucumber is the main type of cucumber and has long fruit, whereas the Lebanese (mini) cucumber has shorter fruit. Compared with field cucumbers, these two types are seedless and do not require pollination to produce fruits. To ensure they are …

Electromechanical Behavior In Biological Systems At The Nanoscale, Alexei Gruverman, Brain J. Rodriguez, Sergei Kalinin Jan 2007

Electromechanical Behavior In Biological Systems At The Nanoscale, Alexei Gruverman, Brain J. Rodriguez, Sergei Kalinin

Alexei Gruverman Publications

Hierarchical structure of connective and calcified tissues from the macro- to nanoscale level determines the mechanical and biological functionality of biological materials and has been the focus of numerous recent studies. Further progress in this field requires development of microscopic techniques capable of probing materials properties, including local composition, crystallographic orientation, and mechanical properties on the nanometer-length scale. Here, we describe a piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) approach to high-resolution imaging of biological systems, based on detection of the local piezoelectric response. Samples include human tooth, femoral cartilage, deer antler, and butterfly wing scales. PFM allows differentiation between organic and mineral …

Homogenization Of Fish Faunas And Concurrent Anthropogenic Impacts On Plains Streams In Western Kansas: 1854–2003, Mark E. Eberle Jan 2007

Homogenization Of Fish Faunas And Concurrent Anthropogenic Impacts On Plains Streams In Western Kansas: 1854–2003, Mark E. Eberle

Fort Hays Studies Series

The fish faunas of the Kansas and Arkansas river basins in western Kansas were signifi cantly dissimilar at the time the Kansas Territory was established in 1854. The faunas were no longer dissimilar 150 years later. This homogenization of the faunas resulted primarily from extirpations, although additions of nonnative species, which now constitute 40% of extant faunas, also contributed. Two periods of changes in the faunas were associated with concurrent anthropogenic changes to the landscape that altered stream habitats. Early extirpations of native species (prior to 1920) occurred in clear, perennial creeks and were concurrent with rapid increases in human …

The Effects Of Trivalent Arsenicals And Thioredoxin Reductase Inhibitors On Selenium Metabolism In Lung Cell Culture Models, Sarah Ryann Talbot Jan 2007

The Effects Of Trivalent Arsenicals And Thioredoxin Reductase Inhibitors On Selenium Metabolism In Lung Cell Culture Models, Sarah Ryann Talbot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Arsenic exposure, through various routes, is associated with the development of cancer of the skin, lung, liver, kidney, and bladder. Treatment of cells in culture with trivalent arsenicals has been shown to increase reactive oxygen species (ROS). In particular, monomethylarsonous acid (MMAIII), a trivalent metabolite of arsenite, is highly cytotoxic and possibly carcinogenic. Three trivalent arsenicals; arsenite, arsenic trioxide (ATO), and MMAIII, are also known inhibitors of the selenoprotein thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Selenium, an essential micronutrient in mammals, is needed in the form of selenocysteine for activity of this enzyme and other selenoproteins. TrxR is part of a key component …

Testing Deterrence Theory With Offenders: Assessing The Effects Of Personal And Vicarious Experience With Punishment And Punishm, Alicia Sitren Jan 2007

Testing Deterrence Theory With Offenders: Assessing The Effects Of Personal And Vicarious Experience With Punishment And Punishm, Alicia Sitren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stafford and Warr (1993) reconceptualized general and specific deterrence into a single theory in which individuals' propensities to engage in criminal behavior are based on some combination of personal experiences with being punished and avoiding punishment and vicarious (or indirect) experiences with being punished and avoiding punishment. The researchers make a substantial contribution to the deterrence literature by accounting for the effect of punishment avoidance when assessing deterrence theory. Despite the theoretical appeal of this restatement, few studies have tested its empirical merit. The current study tests the applicability of Stafford and Warr's model but also addresses several key limitations …

Education | Faculty Scholarship

In mid-June, 2005, the members of the INTER Center received a collaboration proposal from FETE-UGT8, with the objective of carrying out a brief exploratory study on the perceptions and experiences that young people and adolescents, mainly immigrants, have concerning possible experiences of discrimination and racism in their immediate surroundings.

The initial objectives of the project were expanded due to the dynamics of the project itself. New focuses of attention and social, educational and personal dynamics, which can condition to a certain extent the experiences that immigrant adolescents undergo, were detected.

The project initially consisted of a series of interviews with …

Strokes Of Existence: The Connection Of All Things, Mari Gorman Jan 2007

Strokes Of Existence: The Connection Of All Things, Mari Gorman

Graduate Student Publications and Research

Acted or real—and all life is real whether one is acting or not—the common denominator and consistent, ubiquitous reality of life and all behavior is that it manifests in the form of relationships on all scales. But what is a relationship? Until now, the answer to this question has not been sufficiently known. As a result of many years of empirical research that began with the aim of discovering what is going on in a gifted actor when s/he is playing a character that can be observed and experienced as a living, intuitive being, and based on the knowledge that …

Remediation Of Rdx- And Hmx-Contaminated Groundwater Using Organic Mulch Permeable Reactive Barriers, Farrukh Ahmad, Stephen P. Schnitker, Charles J. Newell Jan 2007

Remediation Of Rdx- And Hmx-Contaminated Groundwater Using Organic Mulch Permeable Reactive Barriers, Farrukh Ahmad, Stephen P. Schnitker, Charles J. Newell

United States Army: Publications

Organic mulch is a complex organic material that is typically populated with its own consortium of microorganisms. The organisms in mulch breakdown complex organics to soluble carbon, which can then be used by these and other microorganisms as an electron donor for treating RDX and HMX via reductive pathways. A bench-scale treatability study with organic mulch was conducted for the treatment of RDX- and HMX-contaminated groundwater obtained from a plume at the Pueblo Chemical Depot (PCD) in Pueblo, Colorado. The site-specific cleanup criteria of 0.55 ppb RDX and 602 ppb HMX were used as the logical goals of the study. …

Loess Deposits, Origins And Properties, Daniel R. Muhs Jan 2007

Loess Deposits, Origins And Properties, Daniel R. Muhs

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Loess is an eolian (windblown) sediment that is an important archive of Quaternary climate changes. It may provide one of the most complete terrestrial records of interglacial–glacial cycles. Loess is unusual as a record of Quaternary climate change because it is one of the few sediments that is deposited directly from the atmosphere. Thus, it is a geologic deposit that contains a record of atmospheric circulation and can be used to reconstruct synoptic-scale paleoclimatology. Loess is also unusual in that it can be dated directly using ‘trapped electron’ or luminescence methods that require only the sediment itself. Commonly, loess deposits …

Simulation And Observations Of Annual Density Banding In Skeletons Of Montastraea (Cnidaria: Scleractinia) Growing Under Thermal Stress Associated With Ocean Warming, Ferenc P. Worum, Juan P. Carricart-Ganivet, Larry Benson, Duncan Golicher Jan 2007

Simulation And Observations Of Annual Density Banding In Skeletons Of Montastraea (Cnidaria: Scleractinia) Growing Under Thermal Stress Associated With Ocean Warming, Ferenc P. Worum, Juan P. Carricart-Ganivet, Larry Benson, Duncan Golicher

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We present a model of annual density banding in skeletons of Montastraea coral species growing under thermal stress associated with an ocean-warming scenario. The model predicts that at sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) Montastraea species is a clear indication of thermal stress. When all monthly SSTs exceed the optimal calcification temperature, HDBs form during the coldest, not the warmest, months of the year. In addition, a decline in mean-annual calcification rate also occurs during this period of elevated SST. A comparison of our model results with annual density patterns observed in skeletons of M. faveolata and M. franksi, collected from several …

Impulsivity And The Reinforcing Value Of Cigarette Smoking, Neal Doran, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Lee Cohen Jan 2007

Impulsivity And The Reinforcing Value Of Cigarette Smoking, Neal Doran, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Lee Cohen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present study tested the hypothesis that impulsivity would predict perceptions of positive and negative reinforcement from smoking. The secondary hypothesis was that the relationship between impulsivity and smoking reinforcement expectations would be mediated by the character trait of self-directedness. College students (n= 202) who reported smoking cigarettes participated in the survey study. Hierarchical regression analyses confirmed that impulsivity predicted expectations about positive (β = .22, p = .001) and negative (β = .25, p = .001) reinforcement from smoking. These relationships were also mediated by self-directedness. Results suggest that impulsive smokers in the early stages of dependence …

Examination Of The Long-Range Effects Of Aminofluorene-Induced Conformational Heterogeneity And Its Relevance To The Mechanism Of Translesional Dna Synthesis, Srinivasarao Meneni, Fengting Liang, Bongsup P. Cho Jan 2007

Examination Of The Long-Range Effects Of Aminofluorene-Induced Conformational Heterogeneity And Its Relevance To The Mechanism Of Translesional Dna Synthesis, Srinivasarao Meneni, Fengting Liang, Bongsup P. Cho

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Adduct-induced conformational heterogeneity complicates the understanding of how DNA adducts exert mutation. A case in point is the N-deacetylated AF lesion [N-(2′-deoxyguanosin-8-yl)-2-aminofluorene], the major adduct derived from the strong liver carcinogen N-acetyl-2-aminofluorene. Three conformational families have been previously characterized and are dependent on the positioning of the aminofluorene rings: B is in the “B-DNA” major groove, S is “stacked” into the helix with base-displacement, and W is “wedged” into the minor groove. Here, we conducted 19F NMR, CD, Tm, and modeling experiments at various primer positions with respect to a template …

Introversion : Relationship With Mental Well-Being, Elizabeth A. Balder Jan 2007

Introversion : Relationship With Mental Well-Being, Elizabeth A. Balder

Graduate Research Papers

This paper explores connections between introversion and decreased mental well-being. The author sought to discover whether introverts are more vulnerable to depressive symptoms than extroverts. Overall findings show introverts are more vulnerable than extroverts to depression and decreased mental well-being. Introverts are more likely to be compliant and have lower self-esteem than extroverts, and also have less social support than extroverts, which can be detrimental when experiencing depression. Western culture gives preference to extroverted individuals, which pressures introverts to attempt to change their personalities.
