Evaluation Of Sentence List Equivalency For The Timit Sentences By Cochlear Implant Recipients, Sarah E. King

Independent Studies and Capstones

The equivalency of 34 TIMIT sentence lists was evaluated using adult cochlear implant recipients to determine if they should be recommended for future clinical or research use. Because these sentences incorporate gender, dialect and speaking rate variations, they have the potential to better represent speech recognition abilities in real-world communication situations.

Status Of Women In Higher Education: A Metanalysis Of Institutional Reports, Kathleen Brittamart Watters, Carolyn Ridenour Jan 2007

Status Of Women In Higher Education: A Metanalysis Of Institutional Reports, Kathleen Brittamart Watters, Carolyn Ridenour

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

The authors examined twenty-one institutional reports on the status of women on American college and university campuses. The analysis revealed a dominant discourse of women positioned as dependent on men. Among the five emergent themes included, first, the reality that women were marginalized on these campuses and second, overrepresented in lower power positions. Third, evidence suggested an unequal distribution of salary and perquisites by gender. Fourth, adopting policies toward equity can lessen gender discrimination; however, not with a lack of a strong public and visible commitment to equity by campus leadership, the fifth theme. Additional findings include explanation of three …

Models Of Density‐Dependent Genic Selection And A New Rock‐Paper‐Scissors Social System, Barry Sinervo, Benoit Heulin, Yann Surget-Groba, Jean Clobert, Donald B. Miles, Ammon Corl, Alexis Chaine, Alison Davis

Biology Faculty Publications

We describe new ESS models of density regulation driven by genic selection to explain the cyclical dynamics of a social system that exhibits a rock-paper-scissors (RPS) set of three alternative strategies. We tracked changes in morph frequency and fitness of Lacerta vivipara and found conspicuous RPS cycles. Morphs of Uta and Lacerta exhibited parallel survival-performance trade-offs. Frequency cycles in both species of lizards are driven by genic selection. In Lacerta, frequency of each allele in adult cohorts had significant impacts on juvenile recruitment, similar to mutualistic, altruistic, and antagonistic relations of RPS alleles in Uta. We constructed evolutionarily stable strategy …

The Cytomegalovirus Homolog Of Interleukin-10 Requires Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase Activity For Inhibition Of Cytokine Synthesis In Monocytes, Juliet V. Spencer Jan 2007

The Cytomegalovirus Homolog Of Interleukin-10 Requires Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase Activity For Inhibition Of Cytokine Synthesis In Monocytes, Juliet V. Spencer

Biology Faculty Publications

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) has evolved numerous strategies for evading host immune defenses, including piracy of cellular cytokines. A viral homolog of interleukin-10, designated cmvIL-10, binds to the cellular IL-10 receptor and effects potent immune suppression. The signaling pathways employed by cmvIL-10 were investigated, and the classic IL-10R/JAK1/Stat3 pathway was found to be activated in monocytes. However, inhibition of JAK1 had little effect on cmvIL-10-mediated suppression of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) production. Inhibition of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathway had a more significant impact on TNF-α levels but did not completely relieve the immune suppression, demonstrating that cmvIL-10 stimulates multiple signaling …

Modeling Hydrological Response Of The Upper Suriname River Basin To Climate Change Jan 2007

Modeling Hydrological Response Of The Upper Suriname River Basin To Climate Change

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The goal of this paper is to assess the impact of future climate change on the hydrological regime of the tropical Upper Suriname river basin (7,860 km2) located in Suriname. GCM based climate scenarios from the MAGICC/SCENGEN model and 14 hypothetical climate scenarios are used to examine potential changes in water balance components in the study area. A physically-based distributed hydrological model, WetSpa, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used to simulate the historical and future hydrological conditions. The evaluation results indicate that the model has a relatively high confidence (model bias C1 is 0.046 and the model …

Reading The Fairytales Of Hans Christian Andersen And The Novels Of Horatio Alger As Proto-Entrepreneurial Narrative Or A True Story Of Two Boys Who Grew Up To Write Stories Which Shaped The Entrepreneurial Attitude Of Their Nations!, Robert Smith, Helle Neergaard

The Bridge

We believe that these two very different fairytales are a fitting introduction to the first part of this two part exploration by the authors into Danish and Danish-American Enterprise Culture. This is because they capture the spirit of their respective nations as it stood in 19th Century Denmark and America. The idea for the article flourished from an email conversation, between the authors Helle Neergaard and Robert Smith in late December 2005. The basis of the conversation was that with the year 2005 being the 200th anniversary of the birth of Denmark's favourite son Hans Christian Andersen it would be …

An Interface Of Drainage Division For Modeling Wetlands And Riparian Buffers In Agricultural Watersheds Jan 2007

An Interface Of Drainage Division For Modeling Wetlands And Riparian Buffers In Agricultural Watersheds

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

In a complex watershed, isolated wetlands, riparian wetlands and riparian buffers provide important functions such as flood attenuation and water quality improvement. For conservation purposes, it is critical to properly delineate drainage areas for these features such that their impacts on runoff, sediment and pollutant transport can be reasonably simulated. However, traditional methods for watershed delineation typically fill depressions or ignore riparian features in order to maintain the continuity of surface flow pattern. In this study we develop an ArcView geographic information system (GIS) interface for watershed delineation that accounts for wetlands and riparian buffers. Based on digital elevation model …

Left-Right Olfactory Asymmetry Results From Antagonistic Functions Of Voltage-Activated Calcium Channels And The Raw Repeat Protein Olrn-1 In C. Elegans, S L. Bauer Haung, Y Saheki, Miri Vanhoven, I Torayama, T Ishihara, I Katsura, A Van Der Linden, P Sengupta, C I. Bargmann

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

The left and right AWC olfactory neurons in Caenorhabditis elegans differ in their functions and in their expression of chemosensory receptor genes; in each animal, one AWC randomly takes on one identity, designated AWCOFF, and the contralateral AWC becomes AWCON. Signaling between AWC neurons induces left-right asymmetry through a gap junction network and a claudin-related protein, which inhibit a calcium-regulated MAP kinase pathway in the neuron that becomes AWCON. Results We show here that the asymmetry gene olrn-1 acts downstream of the gap junction and claudin genes to inhibit the calcium-MAP kinase pathway in AWCON. OLRN-1, a protein with potential …

Location And Characteristics Of Springs Contributing Water To The Oak Lake Basin, Brookings County, Sd, Eric Dominiack, N. H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Prairie pothole basins receive water directly from surface and groundwater sources. Spring sources to some of these basins may be significant and present unique habitats. The objectives of this study were to (1) locate surface spring drainages into the Oak Lake basin and (2) characterize physical, chemical and biological characteristics of these spring habitats. Ten spring sources were located using a GIS and sampled weekly from June 7 to August 21, 2006. Discharge was estimated from measurements of channel width, depth and velocity. Water temperature, conductance, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured from midchannel using a multi-parameter probe. Macroinvertebrates were …
