Air And Water Free Solid-Phase Synthesis Of Thiol Stabilized Au Nanoparticles With Anchored, Recyclable Dendrimer Templates, John D. Gilbertson, G. Vijayaraghavan, K. J. Stevenson, Bert D. Chandler Jan 2007

Air And Water Free Solid-Phase Synthesis Of Thiol Stabilized Au Nanoparticles With Anchored, Recyclable Dendrimer Templates, John D. Gilbertson, G. Vijayaraghavan, K. J. Stevenson, Bert D. Chandler

Chemistry Faculty Research

Solid-phase synthetic templates for Au nanoparticles were developed using Merrifield resins and polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers. This synthetic scheme affords the opportunity to prepare metal nanoparticles in the absence of air and water, and it does not necessitate phase transfer agents that can be difficult to remove in subsequent steps. Amine-terminated generation 5 PAMAM (G5NH2) dendrimers were grafted to anhydride functionalized polystyrene resin beads and alkylated with 1,2-epoxydodecane to produce G5C12anch. The anchored dendrimers bound both CoII and AuIII salts from toluene solutions at ratios comparable to those of solution phase alkyl-terminated PAMAM dendrimers. The encapsulated AuIII salts could be reduced …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Socioecology Of Neotomine-Peromyscine Rodents, M C. Kalcounis-Rueppell, David O. Ribble Jan 2007

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Socioecology Of Neotomine-Peromyscine Rodents, M C. Kalcounis-Rueppell, David O. Ribble

Biology Faculty Research

This chapter focuses on the breeding systems of Neotomine-Peromyscine rodents. There are three specific objectives to this chapter. First, we describe the patterns for major Neotomine-Peromyscine clades using data collected from the literature (table 6.1). Second, we examine data from the literature on the following breeding behaviors: male spacing, female spacing, relative intersexual home range/territory size, paternal care, and juvenile dispersal patterns. We examine breeding behavior data in a phylogenetic framework to test if any phylogenetic patterns emerge in the observed variation in these breeding behaviors and if relationships occur among these behaviors. Third, we examine in a phylogenetic framework …

Dishonest ‘Preemptive’ Pursuit-Deterrent Signal? Why The Turquoise-Browed Motmot Wags Its Tail Before Feeding Nestlings, Troy G. Murphy Jan 2007

Dishonest ‘Preemptive’ Pursuit-Deterrent Signal? Why The Turquoise-Browed Motmot Wags Its Tail Before Feeding Nestlings, Troy G. Murphy

Biology Faculty Research

Both sexes of the turquoise-browed motmot, Eumomota superciliosa, display their long-racketed tail in an exaggerated side-to-side wag display in two contexts. In the first, the wag display is performed in the presence of predators (predator-elicited wag display), and evidence supports the hypothesis that the signal functions as a pursuit-deterrent signal (Murphy 2006, Behavioral Ecology, 17, 547e553). In the second, the wag display is performed in the apparent absence of predators immediately before feeding nestlings (prefeeding wag display). I tested four hypotheses on the adaptive significance of the prefeeding wag display: (1) a dishonest, preemptive, pursuit-deterrent signal given in case predators …

Stream Ambient Noise, Spectrum And Propagation Of Sounds In The Goby Padogobius Martensii: Sound Pressure And Particle Velocity, Marco Lugli, Michael L. Fine Jan 2007

Stream Ambient Noise, Spectrum And Propagation Of Sounds In The Goby Padogobius Martensii: Sound Pressure And Particle Velocity, Marco Lugli, Michael L. Fine

Biology Publications

The most sensitive hearing and peak frequencies of courtship calls of the stream goby, Padogobius martensii, fall within a quiet window at around 100Hz in the ambient noise spectrum. Acoustic pressure was previously measured although Padogobius likely responds to particle motion. In this study a combination pressure (p) and particle velocity (u) detector was utilized to describe ambient noise of the habitat, the characteristics of the goby’s sounds and their attenuation with distance. The ambient noise (AN) spectrum is generally similar for p and u (including the quiet window at noisy locations), although the energy distribution of uspectrum is …

The Legacy Of Harvest And Fire On Ecosystem Carbon Storage In A North Temperate Forest, Christopher M. Gough Jan 2007

The Legacy Of Harvest And Fire On Ecosystem Carbon Storage In A North Temperate Forest, Christopher M. Gough

Biology Publications

Forest harvesting and wildfire were widespread in the upper Great Lakes region of North America during the early 20th century. We examined how long this legacy of disturbance constrains forest carbon (C) storage rates by quantifying C pools and fluxes after harvest and fire in a mixed deciduous forest chronosequence in northern lower Michigan, USA. Study plots ranged in age from 6 to 68 yrs and were created following experimental clear-cut harvesting and fire disturbance. Annual C storage was estimated biometrically from measurements of wood, leaf, fine root, and woody debris mass, mass losses to herbivory, soil carbon content, and …

Megrey, Kenneth A. Rose, Robert A. Klumb, Douglas E. Hay, Francisco E. Werner, David L. Eslinger, S. Lan Smithg

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

We describe an approach to dynamically couple a fish bioenergetics-based population dynamics model to the NEMURO lower trophic level nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton model. The coupled models, denoted NEMURO.FISH and configured for Pacific herring (Clupea harengus pallasii) on the west coast of Vancouver Island, are capable of simulating the daily dynamics of the lower trophic levels and the daily average weight and numbers of individual herring in each of 10 age classes over multiple years. New recruits to the herring population are added each June based on either constant recruitment or dynamic recruitment generated from an environmental Ricker spawner–recruitment relationship. The …

A Guide To Nestling Development And Aging In Altricial Passerines, Dennis Jonsomjit, Stephanie L. Jones, Thomas Gardali, Geoffrey R. Geupel, Paula J. Gouse Jan 2007

A Guide To Nestling Development And Aging In Altricial Passerines, Dennis Jonsomjit, Stephanie L. Jones, Thomas Gardali, Geoffrey R. Geupel, Paula J. Gouse

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Nestling growth and development studies have been a topic of interest for a greater part of the last century (Sutton 1935, Walkinshaw 1948) and continue to be of interest today. This is not surprising since studies on nestling growth can provide a wealth of biological information that has larger implications for avian management and conservation. Despite this history of studying nestling development, basic information is still limited or absent for many species. Many questions remain unanswered, and contradictory conclusions are often found in the literature (Starck and Ricklefs 1998a). Therefore, much information on aging and development can still be gained …

Lead Shot Availability To Birds Using The North Platte River Near A Trap And Skeet Range, Kimberly Dickerson, Aida Farag, Andrea Gray, Dave Harper, William Brumbaugh Jan 2007

Lead Shot Availability To Birds Using The North Platte River Near A Trap And Skeet Range, Kimberly Dickerson, Aida Farag, Andrea Gray, Dave Harper, William Brumbaugh

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

A trap and skeet shooting range gun club is located on the North Platte River, below the Guernsey Reservoir in Wyoming. In 1999, we obtained sediment samples to determine if lead shot from shooting activities was present and potentially available to waterfowl and bald eagles. We collected 25 sediment samples, each consisting of the upper 10 cm of sediment, every 1.5 meters along transects that paralleled the river bank and skeet range. Sediment was sorted using a series of sieves. Nineteen of the 25 samples contained at least one lead shot (range = 1-14 lead shot/sample). Samples nearest the bank …

Evaluation Of Wetlands Created With Effluent From A Swine Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation Using Mallard Sentinels: Implications For Mcmurtrey National Wildlife Refuge, Matthew S. Schwarz, Christina D. Lydick Jan 2007

Evaluation Of Wetlands Created With Effluent From A Swine Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation Using Mallard Sentinels: Implications For Mcmurtrey National Wildlife Refuge, Matthew S. Schwarz, Christina D. Lydick

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Previous work by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service identified nutrients, elemental contaminants, algal toxins, bacterial pathogens, and hormones as contaminants of concern (COCs) associated with wetlands created from the secondary effluent of a large swine concentrated animal feeding operation. In this follow-up study, COC exposure and effects to waterfowl were evaluated using game farm mallards. Mallards were kept in enclosures built on two created wetlands (treatment sites) and two reference wetlands that are federally managed for waterfowl habitat. Water quality in the created wetland enclosures had higher specific conductivity, BOD, turbidity, pH, and nutrients than reference wetlands. Algal blooms …

Parasites And Pathogens Of Fish From Devils Lake, Sheyenne River, Red River, And The Red River Delta. Jan 2007

Parasites And Pathogens Of Fish From Devils Lake, Sheyenne River, Red River, And The Red River Delta.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The International Joint Commission and International Red River Board contacted the AEC Co-Chairs and requested that a program be developed to monitor parasites and pathogens in Devils Lake. The objective of this program was to be a further analysis of the potential for transfer of species that might exist in Devils Lake but not in the Sheyenne River, Red River or Lake Winnipeg. Previous studies conducted on Devils Lake (Hudson and Peters, 2005, Williamson et al. 2005, Arroyo 2005) focused on fish parasites and pathogens, phytoplankton, zooplankton, aquatic macrophytes, and terrestrial plants. The IJC requested a proposal that would continue …

Breakfast At The Cockpit Café And Other Innovations In Protected Area Outreach, Christine Baumann Feurt, Ward Feurt Jan 2007

Breakfast At The Cockpit Café And Other Innovations In Protected Area Outreach, Christine Baumann Feurt, Ward Feurt

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Fundamental changes in protected area outreach and education strategies are dissolving old boundaries and fostering innovative approaches to civic engagement. The practice of community-based ecosystem management as presented by Meffe et al. (2002) provides an organizing framework blending ecological, institutional and sociocultural perspectives. This framework flows from a definition of ecosystem management that considers sustaining ecosystem structure and processes across spatial and temporal scales in tandem with societal priorities. The decision-making authority in this system, envisioned as collaborative and participatory, can present challenges for traditionally trained protected area managers. This definition views ecosystem management as:

. . . an approach …

From Mice To Men: Genetic Doping In International Sports, Kristin Jo Custer Jan 2007

From Mice To Men: Genetic Doping In International Sports, Kristin Jo Custer

UC Law SF International Law Review

Elite athletes have a long history of using various doping methods to enhance performance, from ingesting cocaine to injecting growth hormones. The World Anti-Doping Agency has taken a number of steps to rid sports of doping to level the playing field for all athletes. A new frontier in doping, however, is beginning to emerge in the form of genetic doping, whereby athletes may alter their genetic makeup to improve performance and speed recovery from injuries. This note discusses various legal implications and concerns of the rising threat of genetic doping to international sports.

Math Magician: A Study On Distraction And Testing Ability, Brad Fincher, Kate Nelson, Carter Bray

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The problem with distraction in schools today could be affecting student’s learning. Our hypothesis is that students who are confronted with a distraction do not do as well as students who are not confronted with distractions while doing homework. There was a total of thirty five participants. The procedure was for participants in the experimental group would begin doing a math worksheet and a distraction (cell phone ring tone) would be introduced. For participants in the control group they would do the math worksheet in silence with out distraction. The results showed that the distraction did not affect the participant’s …

Why Do You Come To Lu?, Sara Hawkins, Amanda Schmidt Jan 2007

Why Do You Come To Lu?, Sara Hawkins, Amanda Schmidt

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to examine the reasons that people attend and continue to attend Lindenwood University. We examined 129 surveys completed by current Lindenwood University students. The survey asked a variety of questions, including demographic data, resident/commuter status, and what the student likes/dislikes about Lindenwood. There were two hypotheses for this study. Our first hypothesis was that commuter students would attend class more often than resident students. Our second hypothesis was that scholarships/funding was the top reason that students chose to come to Lindenwood. While our second hypothesis did yield statistical significance, our first one did not. …

Is A Basketball Free-Throw Sequence Nonrandom? A Group Exercise For Undergraduate Statistics Students, Stephen C. Adolph Jan 2007

Is A Basketball Free-Throw Sequence Nonrandom? A Group Exercise For Undergraduate Statistics Students, Stephen C. Adolph

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

I describe a group exercise that I give to my undergraduate biostatistics class. The exercise involves analyzing a series of 200 consecutive basketball free-throw attempts to determine whether there is any evidence for sequential dependence in the probability of making a free-throw. The students are given the exercise before they have learned the appropriate statistical tests, so that they can come up with ideas on their own. Students spend a full class period working on the problem, with my guidance and hints. In the next class period, we discuss how each student group approached the problem. I then present several …

Aspen Indicator Species In Lichen Communities In The Bear River Range Of Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers, Roger Rosentreter, Ronald J. Ryel Jan 2007

Aspen Indicator Species In Lichen Communities In The Bear River Range Of Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers, Roger Rosentreter, Ronald J. Ryel

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Aspen are thought to be declining in this region due to a combination of fire suppression, grazing and wildlife management practices, and potentially cool/wet climates of the past century which favor advancing conifer succession. Many scientists are concerned that aspen’s related species may also be losing habitat, thereby threatening the long-term local and regional viability of this important community. To date, few studies have specifically examined the role of aspen’s epiphytic lichen community. This paper presents basic community research describing the application of Indicator Species Analysis for lichens growing on aspen stems in the central Rocky Mountains of North American. …

Public Health Principlism, Craig M. Klugman Ph.D. Jan 2007

Public Health Principlism, Craig M. Klugman Ph.D.

Journal of Health Ethics

Public health ethics has grown out of the medical ethics movement and has remained in individualistic biomedical models. However, as public health is a different enterprise than medicine dealing with communities rather than individuals. The author develops public health principlism based on the idea of common citizenship in the community. When the four principles of public health ethics—solidarity, efficacy, integrity, and dignity—are in balance, a state of justice exists. The goal is to have programs that are the least destructive to communities and the least restrictive to people. These principles provide guidance in ethical reasoning when analyzing programs and interventions …

Withholding And Withdrawing Life Support: Moral Dilemmas, Moral Distress, And Moral Residue, Robert Scott Stewart Ph.D. Jan 2007

Withholding And Withdrawing Life Support: Moral Dilemmas, Moral Distress, And Moral Residue, Robert Scott Stewart Ph.D.

Journal of Health Ethics

This paper argues for the following points. (1) Despite the recent public controversy surrounding the Terri Schiavo case, withholding and withdrawal of life support rarely presents any moral dilemmas. (2) Given this, we ought to turn our attention to how end of life care is done rather than whether it ought to be done. (3) A ‘caring perspective’ is an essential ingredient in end of life care. Unfortunately, as nurses undergo their ‘professionalisation process’, they often lose this caring perspective. Hence, ways must be found to avoid this loss. (4) Assuming success in this enterprise, it is necessary that nurses …
