Tackling Biocomplexity With Meta-Models For Species Risk Assessment, Philip J. Nyhus, Robert C. Lacy, Francis R. Westley, Philip S. Miller, Harrie Harrie Vredenburg, Paul C. Paquet, John Pollak

Faculty Scholarship

We describe results of a multi-year effort to strengthen consideration of the human dimension into endangered species risk assessments and to strengthen research capacity to understand biodiversity risk assessment in the context of coupled human-natural systems. A core group of social and biological scientists have worked with a network of more than 50 individuals from four countries to develop a conceptual framework illustrating how human-mediated processes influence biological systems and to develop tools to gather, translate, and incorporate these data into existing simulation models. A central theme of our research focused on (1) the difficulties often encountered in identifying and …

Ayurvedic Approach To Rheumatologic Disorders, Amala Guha Jan 2007

Ayurvedic Approach To Rheumatologic Disorders, Amala Guha

SoM Articles

In Ayurvedic texts rheumatologic diseases are described under 'Sandhgat Roga", the diseases of joints. Although many of the diseases under this category resemble rheurnatologic diseases classified under western medicine, the approach to differential diagnosis may be different. For greater understanding of Ayurvedic concept of rheurnatologic diseases only few diseases are discussed here. The case presentation of Amavafa provides greater understanding of how Ayurvedic differential diagnosis is made in context of its western counterpart, the rheumatoid arthritis.

Integration Of Gis And Bentgrass Ecology For Ecological Risk Assessment., Carol Auer, Collin Ahrens Jan 2007

Integration Of Gis And Bentgrass Ecology For Ecological Risk Assessment., Carol Auer, Collin Ahrens

Plant Science Presentations and Proceedings

All new technologies carry both benefits and risks. Genetically-modified plants must be assessed before they are released into the environment. Our research examines plant gene flow and the potential impacts from environmental release of genetically-modified plants. Plant gene flow is a natural process that occurs when pollen from one plant lands on the flower of another plant and produces a hybrid offspring. Gene flow can produce hybrid offspring with new traits that could change the ability of the plant to survive and spread. If hybrid offspring have some advantage in the environment, they could become invasive and/or affect other components …

The Movement Of The Gastrop Littorina Littorea In The Intertidal Zone During The Onset Of Winter, Jon Lefcheck Jan 2007

The Movement Of The Gastrop Littorina Littorea In The Intertidal Zone During The Onset Of Winter, Jon Lefcheck

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

The movement of the snail Littorina littoreaon the North Atlantic coast is poorly understood. Most research has concentrated on the vertical distribution of the snail, and suggests that it prefers the low intertidal zone where its food source is most plentiful. In the winter, this distribution is reinforced by a documented seaward migration of snails from the high intertidal zone in response to falling temperatures. From October 14, 2006 to January 22, 2007, I examined the individual movements and recovery of snails in response to the onset of winter. I proposed that falling water and air temperatures drive the majority …

A Pollen Chase Experiment; Examining Varying Levels Of Embryonic Inbreeding Depression, Emily Wilson, Judy Stone Jan 2007

A Pollen Chase Experiment; Examining Varying Levels Of Embryonic Inbreeding Depression, Emily Wilson, Judy Stone

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

A pollen chase experiment was performed upon three Costa Rican populations of Witheringia solanacea to examine the breakdown of genetically enforced self incompatibility (SI) and the extent of embryonic inbreeding depression. Self-pollen was applied in the bud, with outcross pollen applied one day later, and outcross pollinations at both intervals as a control. A variety of responses were found among the populations. BOHS readily accepted self pollen and suffered from very low inbreeding depression. Monteverde and Las Cruces both have lower fruit set with self-pollination precedence indicating that bud pollinations can overcome the self-incompatibility response and that embryonic death due …

Undergraduate Scholarship In The College Of Arts And Sciences 2007 Book Of Abstracts, Winthrop University, The College Of Arts And Sciences, Winthrop University

Abstract Books

The College of Arts and Sciences proudly presents our fifth Book of Abstracts that highlights the undergraduate scholarship conducted in the college by students with their faculty mentors. As the quote by James Russell Lowell implies, the pursuit of knowledge involves more than acquiring facts; it requires posing relevant questions, critically examining information, and clearly communicating conclusions. The high level of scholarship reflected in this book is a testament to the students’ development as scholars and the effective mentorship provided by the Winthrop faculty.

Position Transfers In En Route Air Traffic Control: Assessing Flawed Mental Representations Of The Traffic Situation, Larry Bailey, Alfretia Scarborough Jan 2007

Position Transfers In En Route Air Traffic Control: Assessing Flawed Mental Representations Of The Traffic Situation, Larry Bailey, Alfretia Scarborough

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007

To address air traffic control (ATC) operational errors (OEs) that occur early on position, past OE reduction efforts focused on developing improved position relief briefing checklists and analyzing the content of the recorded verbal briefings. However, the verbal briefing, by itself, does not ensure that either the incoming or outgoing controller had an accurate mental representation of the traffic situation. If there are inaccuracies in either of their mental representations, then the position relief process is flawed. We examined an archival OE database to determine whether en route OEs that occur as the result of a problematic position transfer were …

Pert Networks As A Method For Analyzing The Visual Scanning Strategies Of Aircraft Pilots, Francesco Di Nocera, Robert S. Bolia Jan 2007

Pert Networks As A Method For Analyzing The Visual Scanning Strategies Of Aircraft Pilots, Francesco Di Nocera, Robert S. Bolia

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007

In a Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) network, no process can begin executing until all processes that immediately precede it have completed their activity. PERT networks have been used in psychology to investigate the structure of cognitive processes, and may be applied also to the analysis of eye-movements in order to gather detailed information on the processes underlying the ocular activity. This may be particularly useful to understand phenomena for which specific hypothesis have been made. The primary aim of this paper is to show the potential of this approach as a visualization technique, and to devise a research …

Comparison Of Three Subjective Workload Metrics For A Free Flight Enviroment, Jessica G. O'Connell, Shawn M. Doherty, Ian A. Wilson Jan 2007

Comparison Of Three Subjective Workload Metrics For A Free Flight Enviroment, Jessica G. O'Connell, Shawn M. Doherty, Ian A. Wilson

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007

One recent change being debated in the aviation community is to implement techniques, similar to free-flight which would allow pilots rather than air traffic controllers to retain more control of their flight paths, speeds, and separate themselves from other flights. By implementing ‘self-separation’, one of the positions most significantly affected is that of the air traffic controller due to changes in their job tasking in a ‘free flight’ environment. As the safe capacity of the National Airspace System is limited by the controller workload, it is essential to measure the workload changes accurately and in a way that can be …

Human Factors Issues In Uas Training, Harry K. Pedersen, Laurence Gesell, Weston Pack, Nancy J. Cooke, James Hartman, Matthew Skinner

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007

There is currently a surge in the utilization of Uninhabited Aerial Systems (UAS). Although the importance of the human in the system is often ignored with a focus upon the physical airframe, there are nevertheless numerous human factors issues that must be considered one of which is the training of operators. This paper will describe the inventory and assessment of existing U.S. military and civilian UAS operator training activities and programs conducted by the Arizona State University group of the UAV Alliance, Research, and Curriculum Development Partnership Program. The paper will then discuss various avenues of future research pertinent to …

Extrapolation Of The Intersection Of Two Trajectories On A 2d Display: Evidence Of Biases, Charles Pompanon, Éric Raufaste

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007

The aim of this study1 is to understand how people can extrapolate the collision point of two static stimuli representing aircraft on a 2D display. The task was to point out with a mouse cursor where the two aircraft’ trajectories would intersect. The presented configurations varied with angle and distance between the two stimuli. First, results show an effect of the distance and the angle between the two aircraft on the accuracy of the estimation of the collision point as well as on decision times. Secondly, participants tended to produce significantly more responses within the triangle formed by the two …

Research Guide To Export Control And Wmd Nonproliferation Law, Wei Luo Jan 2007

Research Guide To Export Control And Wmd Nonproliferation Law, Wei Luo

International Journal of Legal Information

After World War II, the non-proliferation of weapons of massive destruction (WMD) and the export controls of conventional weapons and civilian and military dual-use technologies have been one of the most important focal point of international cooperation. Many international treaties have been signed and the international organizations have been established to promote these non-proliferation and export control efforts. The industrialized countries and the developing countries of China, India, and Pakistan that possess nuclear weapons and missile technologies have also enacted domestic laws and set up administrative regimes to control these goods and technologies from flowing to other countries or undesirable …

Interaction Of Glycolysis And Mitochondrial Respiration In Metabolic Oscillations Of Pancreatic Islets, Richard Bertram, Leslie S. Satin, Morten Gram Pedersen, Dan S. Luciani, Arthur Sherman

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

Abstract

Insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells is oscillatory, with a typical period of 2–7 min, reflecting oscillations in membrane potential and the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration. Our central hypothesis is that the slow 2–7 min oscillations are due to glycolytic oscillations, whereas faster oscillations that are superimposed are due to Ca2+ feedback onto metabolism or ion channels. We extend a previous mathematical model based on this hypothesis to include a more detailed description of mitochondrial metabolism. We demonstrate that this model can account for typical oscillatory patterns of membrane potential and Ca2+ concentration in islets. It also …
