Hemp ... Why Not?

By: Jared Kahn

(Abstract)

Industrial hemp has been utilized as a commodity crop for centuries in the United States, and for millennia throughout the world. Today, the crop is cultivated for industrial uses in thirty countries, but not the United States. United States citizens may import hemp, eat hemp, wear hemp, and do whatever they please with a manufactured hemp product, but nobody grows the valuable crop in the U.S. Several states have legalized industrial hemp cultivation, however, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) interprets the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) to prohibit the growing of hemp …

5-Methyltetrahydrofolate Is Bound In Intersubunit Areas Of Rat Liver Folate-Binding Protein Glycine N-Methyltransferase, Zigmund Luka, Svetlana Pakhomova, Lioudmila V. Loukachevitch, Martin Egli, Marcia E. Newcomer, Conrad Wagner

Faculty Publications

Glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT) is a key regulatory enzyme in methyl group metabolism. It is abundant in the liver, where it uses excess S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) to methylate glycine to N-methylglycine (sarcosine) and produces S-adenosylhomocysteine (AdoHcy), thereby controlling the methylating potential of the cell. GNMT also links utilization of preformed methyl groups, in the form of methionine, to their de novo synthesis, because it is inhibited by a specific form of folate, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. Although the structure of the enzyme has been elucidated by x-ray crystallography of the apoenzyme and in the presence of the substrate, the location of the folate inhibitor in …

Doomsday: A Look At The Ethical Issues Behind The Government's Coercive Powers In Response To A Public Health Nightmare., Jacob M. Chapman

ExpressO

This article posits a hypothetical scenario in which a deadly pandemic is unleashed upon the United States and the several individuals whom appear to have a natural immunity refuse to participate in necessary research. The article then examines the possible legal and ethical approaches available for reacting to the pandemic.

The hypothetical scenario addressed in this article highlights a gap in current public health law. While various states have laws and procedures relating to quarantine and forced inoculation, these laws and procedures do not suggest whether the state may or may not coerce non-threatening individuals into participating in potentially dangerous …

A New Species Of Ophiomegistus Banks (Acari: Paramegistidae) From Papua New Guinea, Hans Klompen, Christopher C. Austin Jan 2007

A New Species Of Ophiomegistus Banks (Acari: Paramegistidae) From Papua New Guinea, Hans Klompen, Christopher C. Austin

Faculty Publications

A new species of Ophiomegistus, O. spectabilis, is described from New Guinea. This represents the 13th species of this genus from New Guinea skinks. A re-evaluation of host and locality data for the genus shows a host range restricted to squamates, especially skinks, but no obvious specificity for individual skink species. Specificity for small geographical areas seems more likely. Copyright © 2007 · Magnolia Press.

Smith, Robert E. Berry, Nikolai V. Shokhirev, Celia A. Balfour, Hongjun Zhang, F. Ann Walker

Faculty Publications

In this work, we report the assignment of the majority of the ferriheme resonances of high-spin nitrophorins (NPs) 1 and 4 and compare them to those of NP2, published previously. It is found that the structures of the ferriheme complexes of NP1 and NP4, in terms of the orientation of the histidine imidazole ligand, can be described with good accuracy by NMR techniques and that the angle plot proposed previously for the high-spin form of the NPs (Shokhireva, T. Kh.; Shokhirev, N. V.; Walker, F. A. Biochemistry 2003, 42, 679-693) describes the angle of the effective nodal plane of the …

Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications

There is a great need to develop methods to regulate cellular growth in order to enhance or prevent cell proliferation, as needed, to either improve health or prevent disease. In this work we evaluated the adhesion, survival and growth of bone marrow stromal cells on the surface of several new ion beam engineered nano-crystals of ceramic hard coatings such as zirconium, titanium, tantalum and cerium oxides. Cell adhesion and growth on the ceramic coatings were compared to adhesion and growth on a nano-crystalline silver coating which is known to possess antibacterial properties. The initial results of a study to determine …

COBRA Preprint Series

Gene-set analysis evaluates the expression of biological pathways, or a priori defined gene sets, rather than that of single genes, in association with a binary phenotype, and is of great biologic interest in many DNA microarray studies. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) has been applied widely as a tool for gene-set analyses. We describe here some critical problems with GSEA and propose an alternative method by extending the single-gene analysis method, Significance Analysis of Microarray (SAM), to gene-set analyses (SAM-GS). Specifically, we illustrate, in a simulation study, that GSEA gives statistical significance to gene sets that have no gene associated …

13C Nmr Analysis Of Biologically Produced Pyrene Residues By Mycobacterium Sp. Kms In The Presence Of Humic Acid, J. Karl C. Nieman, Richard C. Holz, Ronald C. Sims

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Cultures of the pyrene degrading Mycobacterium sp. KMS were incubated with [4-13C]pyrene or [4,5,9,10-14C]pyrene with and without a soil humic acid standard to characterize the chemical nature of the produced residues and evaluate the potential for bonding reactions with humic acid. Cultures were subjected to a “humic acid/humin” separation at acidic pH, a duplicate separation followed by solvent extraction of the humic acid/humin fraction, and a high pH separation. 13C NMR analysis was conducted on the resulting solid extracts. Results indicated that the activity associated with solid extracts did not depend on pH and that …

Evaluation Of Youth Leadership Training Programs, Stephen A. Anderson, Ronald M. Sabatelli, Jennifer Trachtenberg

Journal of Youth Development

Results of a two-year evaluation of youth leadership programs offered within community youth development programs in Connecticut are presented. Youth involved in leadership activities were contrasted with a comparison group of youth who were not involved in leadership programming. Participants in the leadership programs reported an improved sense of support from their local communities. Leadership training also appeared to offer an added benefit to males who reported significant improvements in their social self-efficacy in contrast to females engaged in leadership programs or youth comprising the comparison group. Youth who participated in the leadership programs appeared to be a uniquely talented …
