Unraveling The World-Wide Pollution Haven Effect, Jean-Marie Grether, Nicole A. Mathys A. Nicole A. Mathys, Jaime De Melo
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper contributes to the debate on the existence of pollution haven effects by systematically measuring the pollution content of trade (measured by the polluction content of imports (PCI)) and decomposing it into three components: a ‘deep’ (i.e. unrelated to the environmental debate) component and two components (factor endowments and environmental policies) that occupy centerstage in the debate on trade and the environment. The decomposition is carried out for 1986-88 for an extensive data set covering 10 pollutants, 48 countries and 79 ISIC 4-digit sectors. Illustrative decompositions presented for 3 of the 10 pollutants in the data set indicate a …

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Defining what Sustainability and Sustainable Development mean is a critical task, as they are global objectives, which cover different aspects of life often difficult to quantify and describe. Talking about sustainable development means dealing with the development and implementation of SD strategies at international as well as at local level. With this regard, SD information plays a key role in monitoring SD performances at different administration levels. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of sustainable data availability on the internet at international, European, national and regional level. The paper is novel in the fact that the …

In some species such as flies, worms, frogs, and fish the key to forming and maintaining early germ cell populations is the assembly of germ plasm, croscopically-distinct egg cytoplasm that is rich in RNAs, RNA-binding proteins and ribosomes. Cells which inherit germ plasm are destined for the germ cell lineage. In contrast, in mammals, germ cells are formed and maintained later in development as a result of inductive signaling from one embryonic cell type to another. Research advances, using complementary approaches, including identification of key signaling factors that act during the initial stages of germ cell development, differentiation of germ …

A Strong Constitutive Ethylene-Response Phenotype Conferred On Arabidopsis Plants Containing Null Mutations In The Ethylene Receptors Etr1 And Ers1, Xiang Qu, Brenda P. Hall, Zhiyong Gao, G. Eric Schaller
Dartmouth Scholarship
The ethylene receptor family of Arabidopsis consists of five members, falling into two subfamilies. Subfamily 1 is composed of ETR1 and ERS1, and subfamily 2 is composed of ETR2, ERS2, and EIN4. Although mutations have been isolated in the genes encoding all five family members, the only previous insertion allele of ERS1 (ers1-2) is a partial loss-of-function mutation based on our analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of signaling mediated by subfamily-1 ethylene receptors through isolation and characterization of null mutations.

Recovery from acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection requires a broad, vigorous T-cell response, which is enhanced in mice when chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) is missing. To test the hypothesis that production of a nonfunctional CCR5 (CCR5Δ32 [a functionally null allele containing a 32-bp deletion]) increases the likelihood of recovery from hepatitis B in humans, we studied 526 persons from three cohorts in which one person with HBV persistence was matched to two persons who recovered from an HBV infection. Recovery or persistence was determined prior to availability of lamivudine. We determined genotypes forCCR5Δ32 …

The mammalian adaptor protein Alix [ALG-2 (apoptosis-linked-gene-2 product)-interacting protein X] belongs to a conserved family of proteins that have in common an N-terminal Bro1 domain and a C-terminal PRD (proline-rich domain), both of which mediate partner protein interactions. Following our previous finding that Xp95, the Xenopus orthologue of Alix, undergoes a phosphorylation-dependent gel mobility shift during progesteroneinduced oocyte meiotic maturation, we explored potential regulation of Xp95/Alix by protein phosphorylation in hormone-induced cell cycle re-entry or M-phase induction. By MALDI-TOF (matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization-time-of-flight) MS analyses and gel mobility-shift assays, Xp95 is phosphorylated at multiple sites within the N-terminal half of the …

Chladni patterns based on nanomechanics in the microfluidic environment are presented. In contrast with the macroscopic observations in the gaseous environment, nanoparticles are found to move to the nodes, whereas micron-sized particles move to the antinodes of the vibrating interface. This opens the door to size-based sorting of particles in microfluidic systems, and to highly parallel and controlled assembly of biosensors and nanoelectronic circuits.

As compared with extensive contiguous areas, small isolated habitat patches lack many species. Some species disappear after isolation; others are rarely found in any small patch, regardless of isolation. We used a 13-year data set of bird captures from a large landscape-manipulation experiment in a Brazilian Amazon forest to model the extinction-colonization dynamics of 55 species and tested basic predictions of island biogeography and metapopulation theory. From our models, we derived two metrics of species vulnerability to changes in isolation and patch area. We found a strong effect of area and a variable effect of isolation on the predicted patch …

Detoxification and homeostatic acquisition of metal ions are vital for all living organisms. We have identified PCA1 in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as an overexpression suppressor of copper toxicity. PCA1 possesses signatures of a PIB-type heavy metal-transporting ATPase that is widely distributed from bacteria to humans. Copper resistance conferred by PCA1 is not dependent on catalytic activity, but it appears that a cysteine-rich region located in the N terminus sequesters copper. Unexpectedly, when compared with two independent natural isolates and an industrial S. cerevisiae strain, the PCA1 allele of the common laboratory strains we have examined possesses a missense …

Background: Microarray-based gene expression analysis is widely used in cancer research to discover molecular signatures for cancer classification and prediction. In addition to numerous independent profiling projects, a number of investigators have analyzed multiple published data sets for purposes of cross-study validation. However, the diverse microarray platforms and technical approaches make direct comparisons across studies difficult, and without means to identify aberrant data patterns, less than optimal. To address this issue, we previously developed an integrative correlation approach to systematically address agreement of gene expression measurements across studies, providing a basis for cross-study validation analysis. Here we generalize this methodology …
Examining The Effectiveness Of Computer Animations As A Tool In Teaching High School Introductory Chemistry, Carl G. Bailey
Examining The Effectiveness Of Computer Animations As A Tool In Teaching High School Introductory Chemistry, Carl G. Bailey
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Computer animations may provide educators with a viable way to address chemistry's abstract nature. Current research suggests that students benefit from even short exposure to computer animations of molecular events. This applied study examined the potential benefit of using computer animations to enhance traditional teaching techniques. Two groups of students, one taught with computer animations and one taught without computer animations, completed the same assessments. Statistical analysis of the assessments provides evidence that the use of computer animations leads to improved student comprehension of microscopic processes and their relationship to macroscopic phenomena occurring in gases.

Discriminant Function Analysis In Marine Ecology: Some Oversights And Their Solutions, J. Wilson White, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg
Discriminant Function Analysis In Marine Ecology: Some Oversights And Their Solutions, J. Wilson White, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg
Biological Sciences
Marine ecologists commonly use discriminant function analysis (DFA) to evaluate the similarity of distinct populations and to classify individuals of unknown origin to known populations. However, investigators using DFA must account for (1) the possibility of correct classification due to chance alone, and (2) the influence of prior probabilities of group membership on classification results. A search of the recent otolith chemistry literature showed that these two concerns are sometimes ignored, so we used simulated data sets to explore the potential pitfalls of such oversights. We found that when estimating reclassification success for a training data set, small sample sizes …

Return To The Wild: Translocation As A Tool In Conservation Of The Desert Tortoise (Gopherus Agassizii), Kimberleigh J. Field, C. Richard Tracy, Philip A. Medica, Ronald W. Marlow, Paul Stephen Corn
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Translocation could be used as a tool in conservation of the threatened Mojave Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) by moving individuals from harm’s way and into areas where they could contribute to conservation of the species. Numerous factors may affect the success of translocations, including the conditions experienced by tortoises in holding facilities while awaiting translocation. The tortoises available for our translocation study had been provided supplemental water during their years spent in a captive holding facility, potentially inducing carelessness in water conservation. In addition to generally investigating the efficacy of translocation, we compared the effects of continuing with …
Comparative Study Of Haptic And Visual Feedback For Kinesthetic Training Tasks, Ravikiran Singapogu
Comparative Study Of Haptic And Visual Feedback For Kinesthetic Training Tasks, Ravikiran Singapogu
All Theses
Haptics is the sense of simulating and applying the sense of human touch. Application of touch sensations is done with haptic interface devices. The past few years has seen the development of several haptic interface devices with a wide variety of technologies used in their design. This thesis introduces haptic technologies and includes a survey of haptic interface devices and technologies. An improvement in simulating and applying touch sensation when using the Quanser Haptic Wand with proSense is suggested in this work using a novel five degree-of-freedom algorithm. This approach uses two additional torques to enhance the three degree-of-freedom of …
