Progressive Dolomitization Of Florida Limestone Recorded By Alkaline Earth Element Concentrations In Saline, Geothermal, Submarine Springs, Johan Schijf, Robert H. Byrne
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Studies in the late 1970s revealed that the effluents of saline, geothermal, submarine springs on the West Florida Shelf have compositions nearly identical to seawater, except for distinct Ca enrichments and Mg depletions, probably resulting from dolomitization. During annual visits between 1996 and 2003 we collected high‐purity effluents from four submarine springs and from Warm Mineral Springs (WMS), which is located on land. Filtered effluents were analyzed for major ions and for Sr and Ba. These analyses confirm the seawater‐like composition of the effluents as well as the Ca enrichment and Mg depletion. The alkaline earth elements Sr and Ba, …

Gene Sampling Strategies For Multi-Locus Population Estimates Of Genetic Diversity (Θ), Matthew D. Carling, Robb T. Brumfield
Gene Sampling Strategies For Multi-Locus Population Estimates Of Genetic Diversity (Θ), Matthew D. Carling, Robb T. Brumfield
Faculty Publications
Background. Theoretical work suggests that data from multiple nuclear loci provide better estimates of population genetic parameters than do single loci, but just how many loci are needed and how much sequence is required from each has been little explored. Methodology/Principle Findings. To investigate how much data is required to estimate the population genetic parameter θ(4 Neμ) accurately under ideal circumstances, we simulated datasets of DNA sequences under three values of θ per site (0.1, 0.01, 0.001), varying in both the total number of base pairs sequenced per individual and the number of equal-length loci. From these datasets we estimated …

Using a commercially available testosterone enzyme immunoassay (EIA), we developed and validated an assay procedure for determining testosterone levels in small-volume (20 μL) avian plasma samples. We evaluated this EIA’s utility by measuring plasma testosterone levels in Mourning Doves (Zenaida macroura), White-eyed Vireos (Vireo griseus), Red-eyed Vireos (Vireo olivaceus), and Indigo Buntings (Passerina cyanea). Standard biochemical validations (e.g., parallelism, recovery of exogenous testosterone) demonstrated that the assay accurately and precisely measured testosterone in avian plasma. We compared plasma testosterone levels in males and females of all four species and Indigo Buntings in …
An Analysis Of The Subjective Socioeconomic Scale Among Hispanic Immigrants And Caucasians, Mathew Glen Bowden
An Analysis Of The Subjective Socioeconomic Scale Among Hispanic Immigrants And Caucasians, Mathew Glen Bowden
Theses and Dissertations
Subjective socioeconomic status (SES) has previously been shown to be correlated with a large number of health measures. In this study, the subjective SES measure is modified and translated to measure childhood SES. The subjective SES scale is examined in a participant's hometown, community, and nation. Both an immigrant Hispanic and a Caucasian sample were studied (31 Hispanic males; 42 Hispanic females; 38 Caucasian males, 40 Caucasians females). Childhood SES was the most significant predictor of self-reported health in both sample groups.

Examination Of The New Α-(2′Z-Fluoro)Vinyl Trigger With Lysine Decarboxylase: The Absolute Stereochemistry Dictates The Reaction Course, Kannan R. Karukurichi, Roberto De La Salud-Bea, Wan Jin Jahng, David B. Berkowitz
David Berkowitz Publications
The first examination of a terminal α-fluorovinyl trigger in an amino acid decarboxylase active site is reported. To investigate the enantiospecifity of inactivation with this new AADC trigger, an enantioselective synthesis of L-α-(2′Z-fluoro)vinyllysine and its D-antipode has been developed. Control of stereochemistry is achieved through introduction of the amino acid side chain via alkylation of a chiral vinylglycine-derived dienolate. Facial selectivity is conferred by a trans-2′(β- naphthyl)-2′-propylcyclohexyl ester auxiliary, available in both antipodal forms (Comins protocol). The alkylation employs a new electrophile, N-p-methoxybenzyl-N-(2′- trimethylsilylethanesulfonyl)-4-iodobutylamine, for convergent installation of the lysine side chain. Vinyl to 2′-fluorovinyl interconversion then provides L- …

Experimental rate coefficients for the removal of NH(a1Δ) and ND(a1Δ) in collisions with H and D atoms are presented; all four isotope combinations are considered: NH+H, NH+D, ND+H, and ND+D. The experiments were performed in a quasistatic laser-flash photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence system at low pressures. NH(a1Δ) and ND(a1Δ) were generated by photolysis of HN3 and DN3, respectively. The total removal rate coefficients at room temperature are in the range of (3-5) x 1013 cm3 mol-1 s-1. For two isotope combinations, NH+H …

Put That In Your Thurible And Smoke It: Religious Gerrymandering Of Sacramental Intoxication, Mark A. Levine
ExpressO
In February 2006, the Supreme Court ruled on the case Gonzales v. O Centro Beneficente Uniao do Vegetal, granting an injunction permitting the use of ayahuasca, a plant containing the Schedule I substance Dimethyltryptamine, for sacramental intoxication purposes. The unanimous Court justified this injunction by comparing the Uniao do Vegetal's use of the illegal substance with the Native American Church's use of peyote, which contains another Schedule I substance, mescaline. This ruling is incomptabile with lower court rulings rejecting the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church use of marijuana, consistently stating that the Native American Church has rights beyond those of other …

Costs Of Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Case Study Of India’S Power Generation Sector, Manish Gupta
Costs Of Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Case Study Of India’S Power Generation Sector, Manish Gupta
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
If India were to participate in any international effort towards mitigating CO2 emissions, the power sector which is one of the largest emitters of CO2 in the country would be required to play a major role. In this context the study estimates the marginal abatement costs, which correspond to the costs incurred by the power plants to reduce one unit of CO2 from the current level. The study uses an output distance function approach and its duality with the revenue function to derive these costs for a sample of thermal plants in India. Two sets of exercises have been undertaken. …

Governance And Water Management: Progress And Tools In Mediterranean Countries, Alessandra Sgobbi, Gregorio Fraviga
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper reviews the progress with respect to Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in Mediterranean countries, as addressed within the activities of the Nostrum-Dss project, a Coordination Action funded by the 6th Framework Programme of the EC, with a particular emphasis on the current use of decision support tools (DSS). The IWRM paradigm is a comprehensive management framework, which integrates the different aspects of water resources – from the underlying ecological and physical aspects, to the socio-economic values and needs (horizontal integration); and calls for increasing decentralisation and privatisation of water services (vertical integration), and the devolution of planning authority, …

A Modified Environmental Kuznets Curve For Sustainable Development Assessment Using Panel Data, Valeria Costantini, Chiara Martin
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Sustainable development is a concept strictly connected with basic needs of the individuals. During the last years a number of empirical studies have tried to discover and quantify the causal relations between economic growth and environmental consumption and degradation. The most widely used empirical model is the so-called Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), nowadays applied to different polluting elements. Despite the huge diffusion of EKC studies, this model has been criticised for incompleteness of a sustainable development analysis. The aim of this paper is to build a Modified EKC (MEKC) in order to consider a wider concept of development rather than …

Opiate Analogs Selective For The Δ-Opioid Receptor, William J. Welsh, Seong Jae Yu, Anil Nair
UMSL Patents
Novel compounds which selectively bind to the δ-opioid receptor have been designed. These compounds have greater selectivity, improved water (blood) solubility, and enhanced therapeutic value as analgesics. Because agonists with selectivity for the δ-opioid receptor have shown promise in providing enhanced analgesis without the addictive properties, the compounds of the present invention are better than morphine, naltrindole (NTI), spiroindanyloxymorphone (SIOM), and other known μ-opioid receptor selectors as analgesics.

Conservation Of B Class Gene Expression In The Second Whorl Of A Basal Grass And Outgroups Links The Origin Of Lodicules And Petals, Clinton Whipple, Michael Zanis, Elizabeth Kellogg, Robert Schmidt
Biology Department Faculty Works
Studies of flower development in core eudicot species have established a central role for B class MADS-box genes in specifying petal and stamen identities. Similarly in maize and rice, B class genes are essential for lodicule and stamen specification, suggesting homology of petals and lodicules and conservation of B class gene activity across angiosperms. However, lodicules are grass-specific organs with a morphology distinct from petals, thus their true homology to eudicot and nongrass monocot floral organs has been a topic of debate. To understand the relationship of lodicules to the sterile floral organs of nongrass monocots we have isolated and …

The importance of niche vs. neutral assembly mechanisms in structuring tropical tree communities remains an important unsettled question in community ecology [Bell G (2005) Ecology 86:1757-1770]. There is ample evidence that species distributions are determined by soils and habitat factors at landscape (<104 >km2) and regional scales. At local scales (<1 >km2), however, habitat factors and species distributions show comparable spatial aggregation, making it difficult to disentangle the importance of niche and dispersal processes. In this article, we test soil resource-based niche assembly at a local scale, using species and soil nutrient distributions obtained at high spatial resolution in three …1>104>

The Internalization Of Externalities In The Production Of Electricity: Willingness To Pay For The Attributes Of A Policy For Renewable Energy, Alberto Longo, Anil Markandya, Marta Petrucci
The Internalization Of Externalities In The Production Of Electricity: Willingness To Pay For The Attributes Of A Policy For Renewable Energy, Alberto Longo, Anil Markandya, Marta Petrucci
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper investigates the willingness to pay of a sample of residents of Bath, England, for a hypothetical program that promotes the production of renewable energy. Using choice experiments, we assess the preferences of respondents for a policy for the promotion of renewable energy that (i) contributes to the internalization of the external costs caused by fossil fuel technologies; (ii) affects the security of energy supply; (iii) has an impact on the employment in the energy sector; (iv) and leads to an increase in the electricity bill. Responses to the choice questions show that our respondents are in favour of …

Renewable Resources, Pollution And Trade In A Small Open Economy, Horaţiu A. Rus
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Industrial pollution can have damaging effects on resource-based productive sectors. International trade creates opportunities for overexploitation of the open-access renewable resources but also for separating the sectors spatially. The paper shows that, depending on the relative damage inflicted by the two industries on the environment, it is possible that the production externality will persist and that specialization in the dirty good may not be the obvious choice from a welfare perspective. Also, the resource exporter does not necessarily have to lose from trade even when specializing incompletely, due to the partially offsetting external effects.

Using Surveys To Compare The Public’S And Decisionmakers’ Preferences For Urban Regeneration: The Venice Arsenale, Anna Alberini, Alberto Longo, Patrizia Riganti
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
In this paper, we illustrate how surveys can be used to elicit the preferences of the public and of policymakers and city officials for regeneration projects at urban sites. Our methodology uses rating exercises, coupled with conjoint-choice stated preferences for the general public and with ranking exercises for the public officials and other stakeholders, and is then applied to investigate alternative reuses of the Venice Arsenale, Italy, and their economic, environmental and social impacts. One interesting feature of the conjoint choice questions for members of the public is that the responses to these questions can be used to estimate the …

Fishing Across The Centuries: What Prospects For The Venice Lagoon?, Silvia Silvestri, M. Pellizzato, V. Boatto
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Fishing has always been an important activity for those Venetians who live near the Lagoon, and it still enjoys an important economic and social role in the region. Over the last few years, however, the fishing industry has been subject to a profound transformation both in the reduction of the variety and the abundance of the species found in the lagoon, and in the change from a complex and well-structured type of activity to one which has become monospecialist, that is based principally on the fishing of the bivalve Tapes philippinarum (Adam & Reeve). The widespread diffusion of this bivalve …
