Availability Of Dissolved Organic Matter Offsets Metabolic Costs Of A Protracted Larval Period For Bugula Neritina (Bryozoa), Collin H. Johnson, Dean E. Wendt

Biological Sciences

For nearly a century researchers have investigated the uptake and utilization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by marine invertebrates, but its contribution to their growth, reproduction, and survival remains unclear. Here, the benefit of DOM uptake was assessed for the marine bryozoan Bugula neritina (Linnaeus 1758) through performance comparisons of individuals in the presence and absence of DOM. The experiments were performed using B. neritina collected from floating docks in Beaufort, NC, USA from July to September 2004. Seawater was subjected to ultraviolet irradiation to reduce naturally occurring DOM, and then enriched with either 1 μM of palmitic acid or …

The Black Body And Representations Of The (In)Human, Li-Chun Hsiao Mar 2007

The Black Body And Representations Of The (In)Human, Li-Chun Hsiao

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Li-Chun Hsiao, in his article "The Black Body and Representations of the (In)human," takes cues from the theoretical insights of Agamben's "bare life" as well as Laclau's and Mouffe's "social antagonism" and explores how the slave can be considered a constitutive element which is nevertheless foreclosed from Western democracies. Hsiao also analyzes the various ways the term "slave" functions as trope in the founding discourses of Western democracy. "Bare life" remains included in politics "in the form of the exception," as "something that is included solely through an exclusion." Such an "inclusive exclusion" is represented not in its differential relationship …

Soil Carbon Dynamics During A Long-Term Incubation Study Involving 13C And 14C Measurements, Ronald F. Follett, Eldor A. Paul, Elizabeth G. Pruessner Mar 2007

Soil Carbon Dynamics During A Long-Term Incubation Study Involving 13C And 14C Measurements, Ronald F. Follett, Eldor A. Paul, Elizabeth G. Pruessner

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soil organic matter is the earth's largest terrestrial reservoir of carbon (C). Thus, it serves as a major control on atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. To better understand these controls, decreases in soil organic C (SOC), soil microbial biomass (SMB) C, and the role of SMB as a source of mineralizable C were measured during a long-term incubation (853 days) without added substrate. The 2 soils used were a Weld loam (fine montmorillonitic, mesic, Aridic Paleustoll) from near Akron, Colorado, and a Duroc loam (fine silty, mixed mesic Pachic Haplustoll) from near Sidney, Nebraska. The Akron soil was …

A Review Of Shiga Toxin Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Enterica In Cattle And Free-Ranging Birds: Potential Association And Epidemiological Links, Kerri Pedersen, Larry Clark Mar 2007

A Review Of Shiga Toxin Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Enterica In Cattle And Free-Ranging Birds: Potential Association And Epidemiological Links, Kerri Pedersen, Larry Clark

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Cattle are the main reservoir for human infection by pathogenic Escherichia coli and Salmonello enterico. To prevent entry of these foodborne pathogens into the human food chain, management factors at the farm level must be identified and controlled. External sources of contamination, such as birds, should be considered as potential sources of transmission over long distances. In this review, we focus on the epidemiology of infection by E. coli and S. enterica and the consequences of birds acting as disseminators of these pathogens at dairy farms in terms of cattle health and the subsequent effects on human health.

Mass-Mediated Social Terror In Spain, Nicholas Manganas Mar 2007

Mass-Mediated Social Terror In Spain, Nicholas Manganas

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Mass-Mediated Social Terror in Spain," Nicholas Manganas explores mass-mediated narratives associated with social terror. Manganas posits that one approach to understanding social terror is to conceptualize it as a process of narrativization. Manganas takes a global view while at the same time applying that approach to the contemporary Spanish political and cultural context following the 11 March 2004 terrorist attacks in Madrid. He views the current social and political panorama of Spain as an example of social terror in dialogue with both current and historical national discourses. Manganas details the events surrounding the March 11 attack in …

The Tortured Body, The Photograph, And The U.S. War On Terror, Julie Gerk Hernandez Mar 2007

The Tortured Body, The Photograph, And The U.S. War On Terror, Julie Gerk Hernandez

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Julie Gerk Hernandez, in her article "The Tortured Body, the Photograph, and the U.S. War on Terror," engages in an analysis of the institutional mechanisms that lead to dehumanizing violence as a result of the ongoing allegations of torture of detainees at U.S. military bases at Abu Ghraib, in Afghanistan, and at Guantánamo. Hernandez conducts her investigation by examining the photographed torture at Abu Ghraib as an atavistic resurgence of the representational practices at work in post-Civil-War racial lynching. Hernandez also explores the historical and visual parallels between the photographs at Abu Ghraib and the photographs of post-Civil-War lynchings in …

Poetry And The Aesthetic Of Morality, Michael Mcirvin Mar 2007

Poetry And The Aesthetic Of Morality, Michael Mcirvin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Poetry and the Aesthetic of Morality," Michael McIrvin charts the fall of language from its mythologized acquisition through its use in communal history and ritual to its present diminished function as advertiser's tool and means of control by those in power. The partial exegesis of a poem written in response to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the subsequent US response illustrates that the assignation of otherness on the present grand scale is emblematic of this diminishment. McIrvin argues that President Bush's misspeak leading up to the war and to the last presidential election is …

Untangling The Signalling Wires, Boris N. Kholodenko Phd, Dsci Mar 2007

Untangling The Signalling Wires, Boris N. Kholodenko Phd, Dsci

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades process myriads of stimuli, generating receptor-specific cellular outcomes. New work exploits emergent mathematics of network inference to reveal distinct feedback designs of the RAF/MEK/ERK cascade induced by two different growth factors. It shows that response specificity can arise from differential signal-induced wiring of overlapping protein networks.

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

PIK3CA, encoding the p110alpha catalytic subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), is mutated in a variety of human cancers. We screened the colon cancer cell lines previously established in our laboratory for PIK3CA mutations and found that four of them harbored gain of function mutations. We have now compared a panel of mutant and wild-type cell lines for cell proliferation and survival in response to stress. There was little difference in PI3K activity between mutant PIK3CA-bearing cells (mutant cells) and wild-type PIK3CA-bearing cells (wild-type cells) under optimal growth conditions. However, the mutant cells showed constitutive PI3K activity during growth factor deprivation …

Interspecific And Intraspecific Differences In Foraging Preferences Of Container-Dwelling Mosquitoes, Kesavaraju Banugopan, Donald A. Yee, Steven A. Juliano Mar 2007

Interspecific And Intraspecific Differences In Foraging Preferences Of Container-Dwelling Mosquitoes, Kesavaraju Banugopan, Donald A. Yee, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Feeding preferences of larval container-dwelling mosquitoes are not well understood. Primary production is often absent in container systems and external inputs of animal and plant detritus supply the energy base of container food webs by supporting microorganism prey for mosquitoes. We quantified the feeding preferences of Aedes albopictus (Skuse), a non-native invasive mosquito, and Ochlerotahts triseriatus (Say), a native mosquito, when given a choice of animal and plant detritus. We tested for interpopulational (Illinois versus Florida) differences in feeding preferences, and quantified each species' performance on these two detritus types. When given a choice, both species spent significantly more time …

Fragmentation Of Molecules By Fast Ion Impact, Christina Dimopoulou, Nicole Haag, Robert Moshammer, Pablo Daniel Fainstein, Alexander Dorn, M. Durr, Daniel Fischer, Joachim Hermann Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single ionization of simple molecules, e.g. H2, CO2, by fast charged particle impact has been studied using a reaction microscope. By measuring the momenta of the emitted electron and the recoil ionic fragment in coincidence, channel-selective low-energy electron spectra have been recorded. The experimental cross sections will be presented, compared with the predictions of state-of-the-art CDW-EIS calculations and discussed in terms of molecular effects such as (i) autoionization and predissociation channels, (ii) interference patterns resulting from the two-center geometry of the diatomic molecule, in analogy to Young's double-slit experiment and (iii) dependence of the electron emission …
