Anxiety Sensitivity And Retaliatory Aggressive Behavior In Research Volunteers, Joshua J. Broman-Fulks, Michael S. Mccloskey, Mitchell E. Berman Mar 2007

Anxiety Sensitivity And Retaliatory Aggressive Behavior In Research Volunteers, Joshua J. Broman-Fulks, Michael S. Mccloskey, Mitchell E. Berman

Faculty Publications

An important focus of recent aggression research has been to identify personality variables that influence the expression of aggression. One such variable may be anxiety sensitivity (AS). Individuals high in AS fear unpleasant anxiety-related physiological sensations and perhaps physiological arousal in general. Accordingly, people high in AS are motivated to avoid situations that produce these sensations. With respect to aggressive encounters, an intense attack by an opponent involves significant physiological arousal. High anxiety-sensitive individuals may therefore attempt to decrease the intensity of the interaction by responding in a non-aggressive or conciliatory manner. To test this possibility, 112 community volunteers completed …

Complete Configuration Space Analysis For Structure Determination Of Symmetric Homo-Oligomers By Nmr, Shobha Potluri Mar 2007

Complete Configuration Space Analysis For Structure Determination Of Symmetric Homo-Oligomers By Nmr, Shobha Potluri

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Symmetric homo-oligomers (protein complexes with similar subunits arranged symmetrically) play pivotal roles in complex biological processes such as ion transport and cellular regulation. Structure determination of these complexes is necessary in order to gain valuable insights into their mechanisms. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an experimental technique used for structural studies of such complexes. The data available for structure determination of symmetric homo-oligomers by NMR is often sparse and ambiguous in nature, raising concerns about existing heuristic approaches for structure determination. We have developed an approach that is complete in that it identifies all consistent conformations, data-driven in that …

Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound, E. Carr Everbach Mar 2007

Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound, E. Carr Everbach

Engineering Faculty Works

As early as 250 BCE, captains of ancient Greek ships would drop lead weights overboard to provide an estimate of water depth. They would count until those “sounders” produced an audible thud and in that way measure the propagation time of the falling weight. Even though the practice has given way to other technologies for sounding, one still hears the phrase “to sound something out.” In the 17th century, Isaac Newton became fascinated with sound propagation and was one of the first to describe relationships between the speed of sound and measurable properties of the propagation medium, such as density …

The Carnegie Protein Trap Library: A Versatile Tool For Drosophila Developmental Studies, Anna Allen Mar 2007

The Carnegie Protein Trap Library: A Versatile Tool For Drosophila Developmental Studies, Anna Allen

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Metazoan physiology depends on intricate patterns of gene expression that remain poorly known. Using transposon mutagenesis in Drosophila, we constructed a library of 7404 protein trap and enhancer trap lines, the Carnegie collection, to facilitate gene expression mapping at single-cell resolution. By sequencing the genomic insertion sites, determining splicing patterns downstream of the enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) exon, and analyzing expression patterns in the ovary and salivary gland, we found that 600-900 different genes are trapped in our collection. A core set of 244 lines trapped different identifiable protein isoforms, while insertions likely to act as GFP-enhancer traps were …

University’S Transformations: Episteme, Mission And Ethos In The Contemporary World, Martha Abrahão Saad Lucchesi, Eliana Branco Malanga

Essays in Education

The Cartesian principle was put forward by the philosopher as a strategy for research in greater depth. However, it turned out to be a way of understanding reality as if it were actually divided into disciplines. This segmented view of scientific knowledge clashes with the needs of today’s world, where communication is fast and allows for a quick exchange of information between producers of knowledge, making collaborative work easier, even at a distance. A significant increase in the production of scientific knowledge leads to a demand of new paradigms to understand reality. Transdisciplinarity does not invalidate disciplines, rather, by surpassing …

Chlorinated solvents, including perchloroethene (PCE) and trichlorethene (TCE), are among the most common groundwater contaminants found in the United States. Once released into the environment, chlorinated solvents are extremely persistent and often require costly and lengthy remedial actions. The use of constructed wetlands has shown promise as an effective and less costly alternative for the treatment of chlorinated solvent contaminated groundwater. This study characterized and evaluated the concentration of chlorinated ethenes within a vertical flow constructed wetland, fed with PCE contaminated groundwater, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), Ohio. Chlorinated ethene concentrations were characterized within three distinct layers of the …

Using Value-Focused Thinking To Evaluate The Use Of Innovative Stormwater Management Technologies On Air Force Installations, Jeffrey T. Falcone Mar 2007

Using Value-Focused Thinking To Evaluate The Use Of Innovative Stormwater Management Technologies On Air Force Installations, Jeffrey T. Falcone

Theses and Dissertations

Stormwater runoff occurs naturally after every storm event; however, traditional development practices have created many impervious surfaces, such as buildings, parking lots, and streets that increase runoff volume and flow rate. Conventional stormwater management practices focus on collecting runoff into centralized channels and conveying it as quickly as possible to local bodies of water. This type of conveyance system decreases the opportunity for stormwater to naturally infiltrate back into the ground. It also prevents contaminants from being naturally filtered out of stormwater flows. As a result, centralized conveyance systems can cause flooding, erosion, and terrestrial and aquatic habitat degradation. Innovative …

The Molecular Basis Of High-Altitude Adaptation In Deer Mice, Jay F. Storz, Stephen J. Sabatino, Federico G. Hoffmann, Eben Gering, Hideaki Moriyama, Nuno Ferrand, Bruno Monteiro, Michael W. Nachman

Biology Faculty Articles

Elucidating genetic mechanisms of adaptation is a goal of central importance in evolutionary biology, yet few empirical studies have succeeded in documenting causal links between molecular variation and organismal fitness in natural populations. Here we report a population genetic analysis of a two-locus α-globin polymorphism that underlies physiological adaptation to high-altitude hypoxia in natural populations of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus. This system provides a rare opportunity to examine the molecular underpinnings of fitness-related variation in protein function that can be related to a well-defined selection pressure. We surveyed DNA sequence variation in the duplicated α-globin genes of P. maniculatus …

Hox genes encode master regulators of body plan during embryonic development. In land and avian (bird) vertebrates there are four clusters of Hox genes (A, B, C, D). Patterns of Hox expression (paralogs 5-8), in our work specifically Hoxc5, c6, c8, and Hoxd8 in the forelimb forelimb area have been determined, using the chicken (Gallus gallus) as our model organism. These data help complete the known Hox gene expression patterns for early forelimb development for all four land and avian vertebrates. Potential Hox, Box-associated, and homeodomain core binding sites in genes inducing the forelimb (Tbx5, Salli, Sall4, …

Being Ghetto: The Hara As Heterotopia In Judeo-Tunisian Literature, Deborah Barnard Mar 2007

Being Ghetto: The Hara As Heterotopia In Judeo-Tunisian Literature, Deborah Barnard

The Coastal Review

The Hara, or ghetto, is a place that distinguishes its inhabitants from other religious and cultural groups, acting as a spatial indicator of their difference. When Foucault’s theory of heterotopia is applied, the Hara becomes a hybrid, a place simultaneously of crisis and of deviation. In Albert Memmi’s La statue de sel, the protagonist experiences the Hara as antagonistic, or as a dystopia. In Nine Moati’s Les belles de Tunis, the protagonist experiences the Hara as a utopia.
