Reconstructing Gender And Activism: The Case Of Women’S Initiatives In Al-Wihdat Refugee Camp, China Sajadian Apr 2007

Reconstructing Gender And Activism: The Case Of Women’S Initiatives In Al-Wihdat Refugee Camp, China Sajadian

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper explores the various ways that major social, political, and economic issues influence Palestinian women’s consciousness and initiatives in Jordan. Based on a set of interviews with self-identified female activists in Al-Wihdat refugee camp, I contextualize my findings in the multiple institutional and discursive realms through which female identity is constituted, such as nationalism, socioeconomic status, humanitarian development, and community. By investigating these women’s perspectives on a personal basis, I seek to uncover female subjective identities which subvert, complicate, and contest dominant constructions of the needs, roles, and ambitions of Palestinian refugee women.

A Survey Of The Cockle A. Antiquata, Chumbe Island, Kelsey Jacobsen, Lisl Esherick Apr 2007

A Survey Of The Cockle A. Antiquata, Chumbe Island, Kelsey Jacobsen, Lisl Esherick

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

A survey of the cockle Anadara antiquata’s population was performed on the intertidal zone of Chumbe, a small island located off of Zanzibar, Tanzania. Cockle abundance and size were measured along transects laid parallel to shore at four sites, two sites on the west side and two on the east. The marine and intertidal environments on the western side of the island are protected under Chumbe Island Coral Park (CHICOP), a privately managed Marine Protected Area (MPA). However, small-scale artisanal fisheries including cockle collection by women still occur on the unprotected east side. This study will attempt to evaluate the …

Where The Sky Is High And The Hospital Is Faraway: Strategies For Rural Public Health Education In Yunnan, China, Michael Frick Apr 2007

Where The Sky Is High And The Hospital Is Faraway: Strategies For Rural Public Health Education In Yunnan, China, Michael Frick

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The young seller sits on a low stool behind a canvas advertising his product and speaks quickly into a microphone headset. Gathered around him, a small crowd watches as he spreads a modest amount of his curative skin potion on the underarm of a willing volunteer. As the vendor dabs the liquid on the local man’s arm, he gestures toward pictures on the canvas to explain and market his medicine, a red liquid stored in small elixir bottles. Several streets away, thirty government health workers dressed in the blue and black uniforms of officialdom unfold a carnival of public health, …

Effects Of Standardization On Cultural Identity And Community Involvement: Transgender Clients At The Vrije Universiteit Gender Clinic, Benjamin Davis Apr 2007

Effects Of Standardization On Cultural Identity And Community Involvement: Transgender Clients At The Vrije Universiteit Gender Clinic, Benjamin Davis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In the Netherlands, treatment for transsexual individuals has been institutionalized through the protocol established at the Vrije Universiteit Gender Clinic. However, for the population of transgender-identified individuals, those who transgress the gender binary and who identify among or in-between genders, the four phases of transition often do not suit their unique needs and expressions of gender identity. In this study, I examined the narratives of 9 trans-identified individuals who have utilized the services at the Gender Clinic. To supplement my analysis of these interviews, I spoke with S. Leigh Thompson, founder and acting director of the TransMasculine Community Network, Jos …

What’S A Girl To Do: Repatriarchalization And Croatian Women’S Reproductive Freedom, Brittany Rast Apr 2007

What’S A Girl To Do: Repatriarchalization And Croatian Women’S Reproductive Freedom, Brittany Rast

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Croatia is a country in transition. After decades of officially minimizing differences between itself and the rest of the former Yugoslavia, Croatia is now fiercely fighting to establish its own unique identity. As part of that battle, Croats have embraced their folk traditions, and they have brought the Catholic Church back into prominence. Approximately 85% of Croatians are Roman Catholic, and the Croatian government and the Catholic Church have very strong ties (Drakulic 1993: 125). As is the case in many transitional countries, the embracing of folk culture and its norms, coupled with the resurgence of the Catholic Church has …

Tertiary Education For Sustainability: Four Australian Universities’ Commitment To Sustainability, Meredith Wilensky Apr 2007

Tertiary Education For Sustainability: Four Australian Universities’ Commitment To Sustainability, Meredith Wilensky

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

With increasing evidence of issues such as global climate change and environmental degradation, the need for sustainable development has become evident. While achieving sustainability will require many approaches, there is an immense body of literature, declarations and charters supporting education as key. Tertiary education is particularly important because universities are training our future leaders and professionals. For this reason, universities have a moral responsibility to prepare to work toward achieving a sustainable world. Unfortunately, integrating sustainability education is complex, requiring a paradigm shift toward collaboration, interdisciplinary education and an action-oriented approach.

This study analyzed the extent to and manner in …

Effects Of Current Nature Versus Nurture Based Treatments On Children And Adolescents Diagnosed With Conduct Disorder, Rebecca Schneider Apr 2007

Effects Of Current Nature Versus Nurture Based Treatments On Children And Adolescents Diagnosed With Conduct Disorder, Rebecca Schneider

Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal

A review of literature was conducted to evaluate effectiveness of nature versus nurture based therapies on children and adolescents diagnosed with conduct disorder. Physiological or nature based studies included research on the effects of 5-HT uptake in platelets, a 5-HT reuptake inhibitor called paroxetine, as well as the stimulants methylphenidate and clonidine. The 5-HT uptake study provided significant data correlating 5-HT uptake with reactive or retaliatory aggression. Environmental or nurture based studies included research on Parent Management Training, Cognitive-behavioral Therapy, and the Dina Dinosaur Treatment program. The Cognitive-behavioral therapy study identified a positive correlation between age and treatment effectiveness. The …

Understanding Tropical Montane Reforestation: A Comparison Of Soil And Throughfall Nutrients In Primary And Secondary Forests Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, Tyler Kartzinel Apr 2007

Understanding Tropical Montane Reforestation: A Comparison Of Soil And Throughfall Nutrients In Primary And Secondary Forests Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, Tyler Kartzinel

Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal

Attempts to accelerate reforestation in tropical montane forests have been ineffective. One of the greatest obstacles to reforestation is the restoration of depleted nutrient capital to facilitate forest growth. A natural source of allochthonous nutrients was sought to enhance the soil nutrient budget of the secondary forest and facilitate plant growth. Epiphytes catalyze the deposition of allochthonous nutrients in the primary forest where they are abundant. In secondary forests, epiphyte abundance is severely diminished due to inhospitable canopy structure. This study compared the plant-availability of nitrate, phosphate, and potassium in soil and precipitation under a primary forest, mid-succession secondary forest, …

The Modern Application Of The "Best Interests Of The Child" Theory In Custodial Law, John Belanger Apr 2007

The Modern Application Of The "Best Interests Of The Child" Theory In Custodial Law, John Belanger

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

In its traditional sense, family law (aka domestic relations law) involves the legal relationships between husband and wife, parent and child, as a social, political, and economic unit. Recently, the boundaries of family law have to grown to encompass relationships among persons who live together but are not married, so-called non-traditional families. The legal aspects of families, whether they are traditional or non-traditional, include principles of constitutional law, property law, contract law, tort law, civil procedure, statutory regulations, equitable remedies, and marital property and support rights. Most family law statues are drafted as general guidelines. Consequently, state court judges normally …

Decomposable Aggregability In Population Genetics And Evolutionary Computations: Algorithms And Computational Complexity, Vladik Kreinovich, Max Shpak Apr 2007

Decomposable Aggregability In Population Genetics And Evolutionary Computations: Algorithms And Computational Complexity, Vladik Kreinovich, Max Shpak

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many dynamical systems are decomposably aggregable in the sense that one can divide their (micro)variables x1,...,xn into several (k) non-overlapping blocks and find combinations y1,...,yk of variables from these blocks (macrovariables) whose dynamics depend only on the initial values of the macrovariables. For example, the state of a biological population can be described by listing the frequencies xi of different genotypes i; in this example, the corresponding functions fi(x1,...,xn) describe the effects of mutation, recombination, and natural selection in each generation.

Another example of a system where detecting aggregability is important is a one that describes the dynamics of an …

The Question Of Animal Selves: Implications For Sociological Knowledge And Practice, Leslie Irvine Apr 2007

The Question Of Animal Selves: Implications For Sociological Knowledge And Practice, Leslie Irvine

Anthropomorphism and Anthropocentrism Collection

The question of whether sociologists should investigate the subjective experience of non-human others arises regularly in discussions of research on animals. Recent criticism of this research agenda as speculative and therefore unproductive is examined and found wanting. Ample evidence indicates that animals have the capacity to see themselves as objects, which meets sociological criteria for selfhood. Resistance to this possibility highlights the discipline’s entrenched anthropocentrism rather than lack of evidence. Sociological study of the moral status of animals, based on the presence of the self, is warranted because our treatment of animals is connected with numerous “mainstream” sociological issues. As …

Fisheries Research Reports

Trap surveys using Antillean-Z fish traps were carried out across a range of depths and habitat types in the gulfs of Shark Bay between 1998 and 2000. Objectives of the study were (i) to evaluate the efficiency of the fish traps in catching 0+ and 1+ pink snapper (Pagrus auratus), (ii) to investigate the distribution and abundance of juvenile pink snapper in both gulfs using trap surveys, (iii) to investigate the influence of environmental factors including habitat-type on the distribution of juvenile pink snapper and, (iv) to develop trap indices of 0+ relative abundance and assess their use for monitoring …

Ecosystem-Based Fishery Management In South Australia And Victoria, Rebecca Devries Apr 2007

Ecosystem-Based Fishery Management In South Australia And Victoria, Rebecca Devries

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The detrimental impact from fishing on various species as well as on the overall ecosystem has increased so much over the years that the Australian fishing industry is currently in jeapordy. Scientists, fishery managers, government agencies, industry, and environmental organizations have therefore been actively developing and researching management strategies focused on finding a balance between fisheries and the ecosystem. A new holistic and promising approach, ecosystem-based fishery management, invested in ecological sustainability and the recognition of the critical interdependence between human well-being and ecological health, is currently proposed as the best solution for fishery management.

This paper will consequently investigate …

Clinical Implication Of Genome-Wide Profiling In Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma And Other Subtypes Of B-Cell Lymphoma., Javeed Iqbal, Shantaram Joshi, Kavita N. Patel, Sofi I. Javed, Can Kucuk, Afeera Aabida, Francesco D'Amore, Kai Fu

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

The differentiation of lymphoid cells is tightly regulated by transcription factors at various stages during their development. During the maturation processes, different genomic alterations or aberrations such as chromosomal translocation, mutation and deletions may occur that can eventually result in distinct biological and clinical tumors. The different differentiation stages create heterogeneity in lymphoid malignancies, which can complicate the diagnosis. The initial diagnostic scheme for lymphoid diseases was coined by Rappaport followed by Revised European and American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms (REAL) and World Health Organization (WHO) classifications. These classification methods were based on histological, immunophenotypic and cytogenetic markers and widely …

Associating Larvae And Adults Of Chinese Hydropsychidae Caddiflies (Insecta:Trichoptera) Using Dna Sequences, Xin Zhou, Karl M. Kjer, John C. Morse Apr 2007

Associating Larvae And Adults Of Chinese Hydropsychidae Caddiflies (Insecta:Trichoptera) Using Dna Sequences, Xin Zhou, Karl M. Kjer, John C. Morse

Publications

The utility of hydropsychid (Trichoptera:Hydropsychidae) caddisfly larvae for freshwater biomonitoring has been demonstrated, but the major impediment to its implementation has been the lack of species-level larval descriptions and illustrations. A rapid and reliable molecular protocol that also uses morphology is proposed because conventional approaches to associating undescribed larvae with adults have been slow and problematic. Male adults were identified before DNA sequence analyses were used. These identifications established morphospecies boundaries that were mapped on phylograms constructed from 2 independent gene fragments: mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and large subunit (28S) nuclear ribosomal DNA expansion fragment D2 (D2). …
