Classification Of Chemical Substances Using Particulate Representations Of Matter: An Analysis Of Student Thinking, Marilyne Stains, Vicente Talanquer Apr 2007

Classification Of Chemical Substances Using Particulate Representations Of Matter: An Analysis Of Student Thinking, Marilyne Stains, Vicente Talanquer

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

We applied a mixed-method research design to investigate the patterns of reasoning used by novice undergraduate chemistry students to classify chemical substances as elements, compounds, or mixtures based on their particulate representations. We were interested in the identification of the representational features that students use to build a classification system, and in the characterization of the thinking processes that they follow to group substances in different classes. Students in our study used structural and chemical composition features to classify chemical substances into elements, compounds, and mixtures. Many of the students’ classification errors resulted from strong mental associations between concepts (e.g., …

Smoking During Pregnancy Affects Speech-Processing Ability In Newborn Infants, Alexandra P.F. Key, Melissa Ferguson, Dennis L. Molfese, Kelley Peach, Victoria J. Molfese Apr 2007

Smoking During Pregnancy Affects Speech-Processing Ability In Newborn Infants, Alexandra P.F. Key, Melissa Ferguson, Dennis L. Molfese, Kelley Peach, Victoria J. Molfese

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking during pregnancy is known to adversely affect development of the central nervous system in babies of smoking mothers by restricting utero–placental blood flow and the amount of oxygen available to the fetus. Behavioral data associate maternal smoking with lower verbal scores and poorer performance on specific language/auditory tests.

OBJECTIVES: In the current study we examined the effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy on newborns’ speech processing ability as measured by event-related potentials (ERPs).

METHOD: High-density ERPs were recorded within 48 hr of birth in healthy newborn infants of smoking (n = 8) and nonsmoking …

Nietzsche, Eternal Recurrence, And The Horror Of Existence, Philip J. Kain Apr 2007

Nietzsche, Eternal Recurrence, And The Horror Of Existence, Philip J. Kain

Philosophy

Nietzsche believed in the horror of existence—in a world filled with meaningless suffering. He also believed in eternal recurrence—that our lives will repeat infinitely and that in each life every detail will be exactly the same. Furthermore, it was not enough that eternal recurrence simply be accepted—Nietzsche demanded that it be loved. Thus the philosopher who introduces eternal recurrence is the very same philosopher who also believes in the horror of existence—a paradox that is completely overlooked by commentators (who thus fail to adequately understand Nietzsche). All of this demands careful explanation.

Managing Professional Competencies Of Teaching Staff In The University: Views Of Finnish University Leaders, Mark Safferstone

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Higher education institutions should recognize that their staff are their vital and valued asset. The university should therefore, commit itself to encouraging and enabling staff to realize their potential by providing opportunities for all colleagues to gain the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary for them to enhance their contribution to meeting individual, area, and organizational objectives. Not only that staff development should be among a clutch of institutional innovations thrust upon universities, it is a technique or tool to increase quality, efficiency and output, it can be associated with high quality professional performance resulting in career advancement, strategic development, and …

Family Issues In Time Of War: A Chaplain's Perspective, Michael D. Howard, Ruth P. Cox Apr 2007

Family Issues In Time Of War: A Chaplain's Perspective, Michael D. Howard, Ruth P. Cox

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Military families experience many stressors that are similar to those of non-military families and others that are more common to military life. Stressors which are more common to military families include enduring forced periods of lengthly separation, raising a family with only one parent for extended periods, experiencing frequent forced moves, and being away from the extended family. In addition to these basic stressors are those associated with the harsh reality of war: personal injury, disability, and death. For these families, the future is very uncertain, as is the possibility of never seeing one another again. This paper explores the …

The Evolutionary Significance Of Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination In Reptiles, Cavia Teller Apr 2007

The Evolutionary Significance Of Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination In Reptiles, Cavia Teller

Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal

Sex determination is of central importance to the propagation of a species. During this step, differentiation of males and females is initiated in the embryo. There is a remarkable diversity of mechanisms by which sex determination can be accomplished. Two means by which sex determination can be done are genetic sex determination (GSD) and environmental sex determination (ESD). GSD is dependent on the genetic factors that are located on sex chromosomes, while ESD is dependent on epigenetic factors. Species where sex differentiation is dependent on the specific temperature at which the eggs are incubated is called temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), …

Analysis Of Gene Expression In Mouse Brains During Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, Yi Zhou Apr 2007

Analysis Of Gene Expression In Mouse Brains During Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, Yi Zhou

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants is harmful during murine infection with the protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, which causes toxoplasmosis in humans. Dietary supplementation with vitamin E and selenium was shown to increase tissue cyst number, tissue pathology, and weight loss during T. gondii infection. The goal of the present study was to determine the impact of diet on global gene expression in the brains of infected and non-infected mice and to identify the major genes that are differentially expressed, determine their function, and discover the molecular pathways in which these genes participate. Whole …

Methods Of Speciation In Tropical Reef Fish, Kim Lucy Apr 2007

Methods Of Speciation In Tropical Reef Fish, Kim Lucy

Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal

Speciation in tropical reef fish occurs through a variety of methods. It occurs allopatrically when larvae are isolated and populations are geographically distinct from one another. Allopatric speciation also occurs in the marine environment due to physical changes in the environment over large time scales. Sympatric speciation also occurs in the marine environment and is divided into several unique methods that include the following models: stepping stones, adaptive radiations, color morphologies, and the presence of cryptic species. In the following sections explore the causes of speciation in tropical reef fish and addresses the following questions: What are the driving forces …

Climate, Hydrologic Disturbance, And Succession: Drivers Of Floodplain Pattern, Diane C. Whited, Mark S. Lorang, Mary J. Harner, F. Richard Hauer, John S. Kimball, Jack Arthur Stanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Floodplains are among the world's most threatened ecosystems due to the pervasiveness of dams, levee systems, and other modi. cations to rivers. Few unaltered floodplains remain where we may examine their dynamics over decadal time scales. Our study provides a detailed examination of landscape change over a 60-year period ( 1945 - 2004) on the Nyack floodplain of the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, a free-flowing, gravel-bed river in northwest Montana, USA. We used historical aerial photographs and airborne and satellite imagery to delineate habitats ( i.e., mature forest, regenerative forest, water, cobble) within the. oodplain. We related changes …

An Extended Stem-Loop 1 Is Necessary For Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 2 Replication And Affects Genomic Rna Encapsidation, Jean-Marc Lanchy, J. Stephen Lodmell Apr 2007

An Extended Stem-Loop 1 Is Necessary For Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 2 Replication And Affects Genomic Rna Encapsidation, Jean-Marc Lanchy, J. Stephen Lodmell

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Genomic RNA encapsidation in lentiviruses is a highly selective and regulated process. The unspliced RNA molecules are selected for encapsidation from a pool of many different viral and cellular RNA species. Moreover, two molecules are encapsidated per viral particle, where they are found associated as a dimer. In this study, we demonstrate that a 10-nucleotide palindromic sequence (pal) located at the 3' end of the psi encapsidation signal is critical for human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) replication and affects genomic RNA encapsidation. We used short-term and long-term culture of pal-mutated viruses in permissive C8166 cells and their phenotypic reversion …

Bitopic Membrane Topology Of The Stable Signal Peptide In The Tripartite Junin Virus Gp-C Envelope Glycoprotein Complex, Sudhakar S. Agnihothram, Joanne York, Meg Trahey, Jack H. Nunberg Apr 2007

Bitopic Membrane Topology Of The Stable Signal Peptide In The Tripartite Junin Virus Gp-C Envelope Glycoprotein Complex, Sudhakar S. Agnihothram, Joanne York, Meg Trahey, Jack H. Nunberg

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The stable signal peptide (SSP) of the GP-C envelope glycoprotein of the Junin arenavirus plays a critical role in trafficking of the GP-C complex to the cell surface and in its membrane fusion activity. SSP therefore may function on both sides of the lipid membrane. In this study, we have investigated the membrane topology of SSP by confocal microscopy of cells treated with the detergent digitonin to selectively permeabilize the plasma membrane. By using an affinity tag to mark the termini of SSP in the properly assembled GP-C complex, we find that both the N and C termini reside in …

Influence Of Population Reduction On Predator Home Range Size And Spatial Overlap, Shandra Nicole Frey, Michael R. Conover Apr 2007

Influence Of Population Reduction On Predator Home Range Size And Spatial Overlap, Shandra Nicole Frey, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The increasing populations of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), raccoons (Procyon lotor), and striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) in the Intermountain West have contributed to low waterfowl recruitment in recent decades. This effect prompted the need for predator removal at many waterfowl refuges, such as the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (BRMBR) in the Great Salt Lake ecosystem. Our study examined the effects of the removal of predatory mammals at the BRMBR on the home range size and spatial overlap of the remaining populations of red foxes, raccoons, and striped skunks. The removal of predators through traps, snares, and night-shooting created a …

The Forest And The Trees: Biomass And Certification Procedures, Stephen Medlock Apr 2007

The Forest And The Trees: Biomass And Certification Procedures, Stephen Medlock

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

While biomass has the potential to be a sustainable, renewable, and economic source of energy, it has drawbacks that must be managed. For example, biomass production could compete with food production. Cultivation of cash crops to produce biomass energy could also lead to deforestation or the take-over of traditionally indigenous lands by multinational corporations. Furthermore, the trade in biomass fuels crosses state boundaries and is largely the purview of multinational corporations. Hence, states are unable to effectively regulate this trade. Civil society actors, such as international regulatory organizations, have attempted to fill this governance gap by providing incentives for multinational …

Book Review: A Love Of Discovery: Science Education—The Second Career Of Robert Karplus., Robert Fuller Apr 2007

Book Review: A Love Of Discovery: Science Education—The Second Career Of Robert Karplus., Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Robert Fuller has set out to collect in a single volume the most important works by Robert Karplus on science education. But rather than simply present the articles and writings in chronological order, the editor has grouped the papers in eight chapters, and each chapter begins with an essay written by someone who worked with Karplus. Most of these eight essays add depth and complexity to the papers and, for some, may be as valuable as the reprints.

Robert Karplus received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1948 at the age of 21 and became a full professor at UC Berkeley …

A Finite Difference Method For Studying Thermal Deformation In Two-Dimensional Micro Scale Metal Thin Films Exposed To Ultrashort Pulsed Lasers, Haojie Wang Apr 2007

A Finite Difference Method For Studying Thermal Deformation In Two-Dimensional Micro Scale Metal Thin Films Exposed To Ultrashort Pulsed Lasers, Haojie Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

Ultrashort-pulsed lasers have been attracting worldwide interest in science and engineering because the lasers with pulse durations on the order of sub-picoseconds to femtoseconds possess capabilities in limiting the undesirable spread of the thermal process zone in a heated sample during material processing at the microscale. Prevention of thermal damage is an important factor for success of ultrashort-pulsed lasers in real applications. The thermal damage induced by ultrashort pulses is intrinsically different from that induced by long-pulse or continuous lasers. It occurs after the heating pulse is over and involves the shattering of thin metal layers (without a clear signature …

Effect Of Farnesol On A Mouse Model Of Systemic Candidiasis, Determined By Use Of A Dpp3 Knockout Mutant Of Candida Albicans, Dhammika H.M.L.P. Navarathna, Jacob M. Hornby, Navasona Krishnan, Anne M. Parkhurst, Gerald E. Duhamel, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

This work extends our previous observation that the fungus Candida albicans secretes micromolar levels of farnesol and that accumulation of farnesol in vitro prevents the yeast-to-mycelium conversion in a quorumsensing manner. What does farnesol do in vivo? The purpose of this study was to determine the role of farnesol during infection with a well-established mouse model of systemic candidiasis with C. albicans A72 administered by tail vein injection. This question was addressed by altering both endogenous and exogenous farnesol. For endogenous farnesol, we created a knockout mutation in DPP3, the gene encoding a phosphatase which converts farnesyl pyrophosphate to farnesol. …
