Partners With A Vision: Librarians And Faculty Collaborate To Develop A Library Orientation Program At A Non-Traditional Campus, Jo Anne Bryant, Alyssa Martin, Jana J. Slay

The Southeastern Librarian

In Fall 2004, the Chair of the Department of Communication and Fine Arts was charged with customizing the TROY University Orientation course (TROY 1101) curriculum and activities for the Montgomery Campus student population. After talking with the Montgomery Campus library director about the need for including a comprehensive library component, the Chair began working with two librarians to create a library orientation component for TROY 1101, a one-semester hour course that would be required for all new and transfer students effective Fall Semester 2005.

Women's And Gender Studies Spring 2007, Margaret Jacobs

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

Greetings from the Women’s and Gender Studies office. Many things have happened this past year, but our big news this spring is that we have secured more stable funding for the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. After 30 years at UNL, it looks like we will continue for many years to come.

When I became director of Women’s and Gender Studies in August, I learned very quickly just how much work our program does and just how little money we have to finance it. This is an old story that we are all familiar with; work that women do or …

Eating, Substance Use, And Body Image: A Comparison Of Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint College Age Females, Monika Sandberg, Diane L. Spangler Apr 2007

Eating, Substance Use, And Body Image: A Comparison Of Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint College Age Females, Monika Sandberg, Diane L. Spangler

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This study examined differences between Latter-day Saint (LDS) and non-Latter-day-Saint (non-LDS) females in desire to engage in substance use and eating behaviors in response to negative emotion. Additionally, differences between LDS and non-LDS females regarding body image, as well as body image differences between LDS females residing inside Utah and outside Utah, were explored. Findings suggested that non-LDS females were more likely to experience increased urges to use substances in response to negative emotion than LDS females, consistent with LDS doctrine teaching the aviodance of substance use. LDS females also did not appear to substitute LDS-sanctioned eating behaviors for substance …

Impacts Of Wastewater Treatment Facilities On Receiving Water Quality, Stephen H. Jones Apr 2007

Impacts Of Wastewater Treatment Facilities On Receiving Water Quality, Stephen H. Jones

PREP Reports & Publications

The Squamscott River has had extended episodes of low dissolved oxygen (DO) that have been recorded at a site near its mouth over the past few years. These episodes were recorded as a result of temporally intensive monitoring by a datasonde, whereas data for the rest of the river has been spotty. Thus, the spatial extent of low DO episodes is not known. This study was designed to better characterize the spatial extent of DO conditions along the full length of the river, as well as to determine nutrient and other water quality parameters along the transect to help understand …

Codebook: Lsay 2006 Sample Of 15 Year-Olds Wave 1 (2006) Technical Report No. 42, Sheldon Rothman

LSAY Technical Reports

In 2006, a nationally representative sample of approximately 13 000 15 year-old students was selected to participate in OECD PISA. More than 10 000 of these young people became the fourth cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth. The PISA sample was constructed by randomly selecting fifty 15 year-old students from a sample of schools designed to represent state and sector. Assessments in mathematical literacy, reading literacy, scientific literacy and problem solving were administered to students in their schools to provide information on school achievement for use in later analyses of educational and labour market participation. Students also completed …

The Midlife Client, Patricia Evans Apr 2007

The Midlife Client, Patricia Evans

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This case study explored the midlife physical, emotional, and role changes or a small sample of women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) to determine how they cope with midlife change, to examine their aging experience within the LDS Church community, and to discover how the LDS faith and church community helped them through the challenges of midlife. According to a qualitiative design, the researcher implemented in-depth interviews with 10 LDS women from three cohorts: ages 35-44, 45-54, 55-65. Three theoretical perspectives were used to frame the study: feminist, social constructionist, and narrative. A qualitiative matrix …

Human Sex Ratios And Sex Distribution In Sibships Of Size 2, William D. Stansfield, Matthew A. Carlton Apr 2007

Human Sex Ratios And Sex Distribution In Sibships Of Size 2, William D. Stansfield, Matthew A. Carlton

Biological Sciences

We previously analyzed data from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey (NHIS, 1998 to 2002) on families with two biological children (10 years of age and younger) and found that the distribution of families with two boys, two girls, and one boy + one girl did not statistically conform to a binomial distribution regardless of the boy/girl sex ratio used. Using the best estimate of the sex ratio from the data, we found that there were significantly more families with opposite-sex siblings than families with same-sex siblings. No biological mechanism could explain these results at the time. In the present …

Agriculture At The Urban Interface: Attitudes Of New Rural Residents, Daniel Levi, Kathryn Sperry Apr 2007

Agriculture At The Urban Interface: Attitudes Of New Rural Residents, Daniel Levi, Kathryn Sperry

As the buffer between farming and residential areas shrinks, pesticide related conflicts increase. Dan Levi and Kathryn Sperry discuss their study examining environmental attitudes and health impacts of living at the agricultural / urban interface in Oceano, California. The discussion illustrates the importance of including these potential environmental impacts and their mitigation in the planning agenda.

Lower Extremity Mechanics During Cutting Tasks In Different Shoe-Turf Combinations, Rafael Garcilazo Apr 2007

Lower Extremity Mechanics During Cutting Tasks In Different Shoe-Turf Combinations, Rafael Garcilazo

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The demands placed on the lower extremity when performing jumping and cutting maneuvers are depending, in part, on the interaction between the playing surface and the athlete's footwear. Higher demands are likely to result in increased incidence of injury, so for safety reasons it is important to quantify how the shoe-turf interface affects joint loads. The purpose of this study is to compare the forces on the lower extremity while landing and side cutting (rapid direction change at approximately 45 degrees) on artificial football turf with different styles of football cleats.

Messages Of Maternity: The Relationship Of State And Ngo Institutions To Reproductive Health Services And The Construction Of Family In Jordan, Julia Shatz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project examines the ways in which family planning and reproductive health services and the institutions that provide them contribute to constructing definitions of family and motherhood in Jordan. The study is based on personal interviews conducted with representatives at six institutions – the Ministry of Health, the Higher Population Council, the Jordanian Association for Family Planning and Protection, Queen Zein Al Sharaf Institute for Development, the Arab Women’s Organization, and the Jordanian Women’s Union. This paper addresses the issues of family planning as a method of population control, the integrated medical and educational approach currently popular in family planning …
