Cpg Hypomethylation In A Large Domain Encompassing The Embryonic Β-Like Globin Genes In Primitive Erythrocytes, Mei Hsu, Rodwell R. Mabaera, Christopher H. Lowrey, David I. K. Martin, Steven Fiering Apr 2007

Cpg Hypomethylation In A Large Domain Encompassing The Embryonic Β-Like Globin Genes In Primitive Erythrocytes, Mei Hsu, Rodwell R. Mabaera, Christopher H. Lowrey, David I. K. Martin, Steven Fiering

Dartmouth Scholarship

There is little evidence addressing the role of CpG methylation in transcriptional control of genes that do not contain CpG islands. This is reflected in the ongoing debate about whether CpG methylation merely suppresses retroelements or if it also plays a role in developmental and tissue-specific gene regulation. The genes of the β-globin locus are an important model of mammalian developmental gene regulation and do not contain CpG islands. We have analyzed the methylation status of regions in the murine β-like globin locus in uncultured primitive and definitive erythroblasts and other cultured primary and transformed cell types. A large (∼20-kb) …

An Infection Model For Examining The Effects Of Gender And Diabetic State On Proinflammatory Cytokine Secretion By Phagocytic Cells In Response To Infection With Burkholderia Pseudomallei, Laura L. Dickey Apr 2007

An Infection Model For Examining The Effects Of Gender And Diabetic State On Proinflammatory Cytokine Secretion By Phagocytic Cells In Response To Infection With Burkholderia Pseudomallei, Laura L. Dickey

Theses and Dissertations

Burkholderia pseudomallei is an opportunistic soil pathogen that causes melioidosis, a life-threatening human disease prevalent in Southeast Asia, northern Australia, the Middle East, Africa, and South America. The organism also causes disease in plants and animals. Persons with severe melioidosis usually die of septicemia. Relatively little is known regarding the virulence mechanisms of B. pseudomallei; however, several putative virulence determinants have been identified. The organism is able to invade and replicate within phagocytic cells and is particularly pathogenic in males with diabetes mellitus. B. thailandensis is closely related to B. pseudomallei, but is not pathogenic. This study examines various in …

A Baraminological Analysis Of The Land Fowl (Class Aves, Order Galliformes), Melissa Michelle Mcconnachie Apr 2007

A Baraminological Analysis Of The Land Fowl (Class Aves, Order Galliformes), Melissa Michelle Mcconnachie

Senior Honors Theses

This study investigates the number of galliform bird holobaramins. Criteria used to determine the members of any given holobaramin included a biblical word analysis, statistical baraminology, and hybridization. The biblical search yielded limited biosystematic information; however, since it is a necessary and useful part of baraminology research it is both included and discussed. Baraminic distance and multidimensional scaling suggest four holobaramins (cracids, megapodes, guineafowl, and all other galliforms), while a review of hybridization records infers only two (megapodes and all other galliforms). All analyses for statistical methods were based on a dataset obtained from Dyke et al. (2003). I suggest …

Dna-Templated Nanomaterials, Hector Alejandro Becerril-Garcia Apr 2007

Dna-Templated Nanomaterials, Hector Alejandro Becerril-Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

Nanomaterials display interesting physical and chemical properties depending on their shape, size and composition. Self assembly is an intriguing route to producing nanomaterials with controllable compositions and morphologies. DNA has been used to guide the self assembly of materials, resulting in: (1) metal nanowires; (2) metal or semiconductor nanorods; (3) carbon nanotubes; and (4) semiconductor, metal or biological nanoparticles. My work expands the range of DNA templated nanomaterials and develops novel ways of using DNA to pattern nanostructures on surfaces. I have performed the first synthesis of silver nanorods on single stranded DNA, an attractive material for localizing DNA coupled …

The Successful Eradication Of Introduced Roof Rats (Rattus Rattus) From Buck Island Using Diphacinone, Followed By An Irruption Of House Mice (Mus Musculus), Gary W. Witmer, Frank Boyd, Zandy Hillis-Starr Apr 2007

The Successful Eradication Of Introduced Roof Rats (Rattus Rattus) From Buck Island Using Diphacinone, Followed By An Irruption Of House Mice (Mus Musculus), Gary W. Witmer, Frank Boyd, Zandy Hillis-Starr

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The United States National Park Service and the United States Wildlife Services made a planned and sustained effort to eradicate the introduced roof rats (Rattus rattus) from Buck Island Reef National Monument in the Caribbean Sea during 1998–2000. The rats were causing substantial damage to a variety of the 80-ha island’s floral and faunal resources. An island-wide grid of elevated bait stations containing anticoagulant (0.005% diphacinone; 50 ppm) rodenticide bait blocks were used to eradicate the rats. The bait stations were modified several times to assure ready access by rats while minimizing access by non-target animals, especially crabs …

Na/K-Atpase Beta1 Subunit Expression Is Required For Blastocyst Formation And Normal Assembly Of Trophectoderm Tight Junction-Associated Proteins., Pavneesh Madan, Keeley Rose, Andrew J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Na/K-ATPase plays an important role in mediating blastocyst formation. Despite the expression of multiple Na/K-ATPase alpha and beta isoforms during mouse preimplantation development, only the alpha1 and beta1 isoforms have been localized to the basolateral membrane regions of the trophectoderm. The aim of the present study was to selectively down-regulate the Na/K-ATPase beta1 subunit employing microinjection of mouse 1 cell zygotes with small interfering RNA (siRNA) oligos. Experiments comprised of non-injected controls and two groups microinjected with either Stealthtrade mark Na/K-ATPase beta1 subunit oligos or nonspecific Stealthtrade mark siRNA as control. Development to the 2-, 4-, 8-, and 16-cell and …

An Innovative Approach To Impacting Student Academic Achievement And Attitudes: Pilot Study Of The Heads Up Virtual Molecular Biology Lab, Melanie M. Mowry Mph, Ross Shegog Phd, Nathalie Sessions Bba, Nancy G. Murray Drph

Advances in Teaching and Learning Day Abstracts

Introduction: The Virtual Molecular Biology Lab is an innovative, computer-based educational program designed to teach advanced high school biology students how to create a transgenic mouse model in a simulated laboratory setting. It was created in an effort to combat the current decrease in adolescent enthusiasm for and academic achievement in science and science careers, especially in Hispanic students. Because studies have found that hands-on learning, particularly computer-based instruction, is effective in enhancing science achievement, the Virtual Lab is a potential tool for increasing the number of Hispanic students that choose to enter science fields. Speckle in SAR imagery is a by-product of constructive and destructive interference between scatterers within a resolution cell. This speckle phenomenon gives SAR imagery a "noise-like" appearance and is often exploited in near angle and/or coherent stereo pairs. However, in many cases, this speckle is unwanted and can be considered noise or interference. We use partial differential equation (PDE) methods for speckle mitigation in detected imagery and the collected complex image data. In particular, we study the effects of non-linear anisotropic diffusion filters on collected SAR image data. In the past, anisotropic diffusion (AD) techniques have been successfully used in …
