Mutual Grooming In Cucujoid Beetles (Coleoptera: Silvanidae), Barry D. Valentine Apr 2007

Mutual Grooming In Cucujoid Beetles (Coleoptera: Silvanidae), Barry D. Valentine

Insecta Mundi

Mutual grooming in two genera of silvanid beetles is described, and appears to be the first report of this behavior in the order Coleoptera. In Uleiota debilis (LeConte), allogrooming recipients were either stationary or moved away during the acts, without solicitation or facilitation. In Nausibius major Zimmermann, allogrooming was much more extensive and the individual being groomed appeared to facilitate the process by immobility or by changes in posture, there were no recognizable sexual overtones, no solicitations, and no avoidance movements. Gregarious behaviors of some other silvanid beetles are reviewed.

Distribution And Biology Of The Ectoparasitic Beetles Leptinillus Validus (Horn) And L. Aplodontiae Ferris Of North America (Coleoptera: Leiodidae: Platypsyllinae), Stewart B. Peck

Insecta Mundi

The distribution and biology of the beetles Leptinillus validus (Horn) and L. aplodontiae Ferris are summarized for North America. The beetles are ectoparasitic on rodents; L. validus on the beaver, Castor canadensis Linnaeus (Castoridae) throughout the northern part of its range, and L. aplodontiae on the mountain beaver, Aplodontia rufa (Rafinesque) (Aplodontidae) in the Pacific Northwest.

A History Of Mole Crickets (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae) In Puerto Rico, J. H. Frank, N. E. Vicente, N. C. Leppla Apr 2007

A History Of Mole Crickets (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae) In Puerto Rico, J. H. Frank, N. E. Vicente, N. C. Leppla

Insecta Mundi

Abstract:
Published claims in 1887-1903 that the mole cricket Neocurtilla hexadactyla (Perty) occurs in Puerto Rico all seem to be derived from a misidentification made by Agustín Stahl, a medical practitioner and collector of natural history objects, published in 1882. That species does not seem now to occur in Puerto Rico and almost certainly never did. However, the opportunity still exists for it to colonize by wind-assisted flight from islands to the southeast just as we believe did the mole cricket Scapteriscus didactylus (Latreille) as an immigrant. Stahl evidently mistook the latter for the former. According to some subsequent authors, …

Primer Registro De Trypoxylon Mexicanum Para La Hispaniola, Antillas Mayores (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Crabronidae), Julio Genaro

Insecta Mundi

Economic Hardship And Children's Social Withdrawal In Romanian Families, Jennifer Denise Pearson Apr 2007

Economic Hardship And Children's Social Withdrawal In Romanian Families, Jennifer Denise Pearson

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the impact of perceived economic hardship on family processes and children's socially withdrawn (reticent) behaviors in Romania. The sample consisted of 121 Romanian mothers and fathers of 4-5 year old children, as well as children's kindergarten teachers. Drawing on Conger and colleagues' family stress model of economic hardship, the associations among mothers' and fathers' ratings of economic hardship, depression, marital conflict, psychologically controlling parenting, and teacher ratings of child social withdrawal were analyzed. Structural equation modeling using AMOS 7.0 was used to test the model. Findings generally support earlier studies with European American families, as well as …

Functional Dissociation In Frontal And Striatal Areas For Processing Of Positive And Negative Reward Information, Xun Liu, David K. Powell, Hongbin Wang, Brian T. Gold, Christine R. Corbly, Jane E. Joseph Apr 2007

Functional Dissociation In Frontal And Striatal Areas For Processing Of Positive And Negative Reward Information, Xun Liu, David K. Powell, Hongbin Wang, Brian T. Gold, Christine R. Corbly, Jane E. Joseph

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Reward-seeking behavior depends critically on processing of positive and negative information at various stages such as reward anticipation, outcome monitoring, and choice evaluation. Behavioral and neuropsychological evidence suggests that processing of positive (e.g., gain) and negative (e.g., loss) reward information may be dissociable and individually disrupted. However, it remains uncertain whether different stages of reward processing share certain neural circuitry in frontal and striatal areas, and whether distinct but interactive systems in these areas are recruited for positive and negative reward processing. To explore these issues, we used a monetary decision-making task to investigate the roles of frontal and striatal …

Interpreter Competency Exam In Mental Health, Sergiy Barsukov Apr 2007

Interpreter Competency Exam In Mental Health, Sergiy Barsukov

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The issue of diversity has become one of the most salient among mental health professionals in the past few decades. As the American society becomes more and more diverse the need for professionals who can provide culturally competent services will continue to rise. One of the important aspects of culture is language. When serving clients who are monolingual it is not always possible to find a therapist who fluently speaks the client's language. Therefore, professionals often have to use interpreters in order to adequately serve their clients. Initial research on interpreter competence is concerning, with one study reporting an average …

Stacked Generalization For Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Hardik P. Gandhi Apr 2007

Stacked Generalization For Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Hardik P. Gandhi

Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurological disorder characterized by nerve degeneration and neuronal death. The diagnosis of AD at an early stage is a major concern due to growing number of elderly people affected by the disease, as well as the lack of a standard diagnosis procedure available to community clinics. A biomarker that will allow early diagnosis of the disease would be beneficial. Such biomarker should be noninvasive, simple to obtain, safe, inexpensive, accurate, and most importantly, must be made available to local health clinics for maximum effectiveness.

Recent studies have used wavelets and other signal processing methods to …

Keragaman Alel Gadung Liar (Dioscorea Bulbifera L.) Di Sumatera Barat, Tesri Maideliza, Mansyurdin Mansyurdin

Makara Journal of Science

The variety of six enzymes locus on three populations of Dioscorea bulbifera was revealed using both starch and polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis. Present study showed three polymorphic loci has each 2 alleles with nine total numbers of alleles for all populations examined. The higher alleles variety detected within population (Hs=0,08) than among population (Dst=0,04). The high levels of gene flow (0.53) were due to low differentiation among population. This result supported low levels genetic variation among population examined. Alozime data revealed moderate differentiation genetically between Western and Eastern part population from Bukit Barisan edge.
