Application And Refinement Of The Karst Disturbance Index In West Central, Florida, Leslie A. North
Application And Refinement Of The Karst Disturbance Index In West Central, Florida, Leslie A. North
KIP Theses and Dissertations
A hierarchical and standardized environmental disturbance index, specifically designed for karst landscapes, was created by van Beynen and Townsend (2005). To assess the applicability of the index and provide recommendations for its refinement, the index was applied in four west-central Florida counties and interviews were conducted with local and state officials, community planners, and land resource managers. The karst disturbance index consists of 30 indicators contained within five broad categories: geomorphology, hydrology, atmosphere, biota, and culture. Data was readily available for most environmental indicators used to construct the index. Overall, levels of disturbance vary between the counties due to the …

Alzheimer's Disease: Cholesterol, Membrane Rafts, Isoprenoids And Statins, Patrick C. Reid, Yasuomi Urano, Tatsuhiko Kodama, Takao Hamakubo
Dartmouth Scholarship
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder and the most prevalent form of dementia worldwide. AD is characterized pathologically by amyloid-? plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and neuronal loss, and clinically by a progressive loss of cognitive abilities. At present, the fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying the disease are unclear and no treatment for AD is known. Epidemiological evidence continues to mount linking vascular diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes, and hypercholesterolaemia with an increased risk for developing AD. A growing amount of evidence suggests a mechanistic link between cholesterol metabolism in the brain and the formation of amyloid plaques in AD …

Trade Liberalization And Environmental Justice In The Ivorian Cocoa Industry, Anne M. Fell '07
Honors Projects
This paper explores the relationship between neoliberal economic policy and environmental justice in the Ivorian cocoa industry by examining the precedents set forth during the French colonial era, the economic principles behind trade liberalization, and trade liberalization's effects on poverty and child labor, environmental degradation, and ethnic violence.

Expansion Of The Calcium Hypothesis Of Brain Aging And Alzheimer's Disease: Minding The Store, Olivier Thibault, John C. Gant, Philip W. Landfield
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
Evidence accumulated over more than two decades has implicated Ca2+ dysregulation in brain aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), giving rise to the Ca2+ hypothesis of brain aging and dementia. Electrophysiological, imaging, and behavioral studies in hippocampal or cortical neurons of rodents and rabbits have revealed aging-related increases in the slow afterhyperpolarization, Ca2+ spikes and currents, Ca2+transients, and L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channel (L-VGCC) activity. Several of these changes have been associated with age-related deficits in learning or memory. Consequently, one version of the Ca2+ hypothesis has been that increased L-VGCC activity drives many of the other Ca2+-related biomarkers of hippocampal aging. …

The Lipid Lowering Effect Of Plant Sterol Ester Capsules In Hypercholesterolemic Subjects, Robert V. Acuff, David J. Cai, Zhi Ping Dong, Doris Bell
ETSU Faculty Works
Background. Foods enriched with phytosterols have been proven to be an effective therapy to improve blood lipid profiles. However, none of the studies have investigated the efficacy in lipid lowering of plant sterol esters (PSE) in capsule form. The objective of this study is to determine if the plant sterol esters (PSE) in capsule form (1.3 grams of PSE/day) lowered plasma cholesterol levels and lipid ratios in free-living hypercholesterolemic subjects during a 4-week intervention period. Methods. Sixteen subjects participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, sequential study with a 4-week placebo phase followed by a 2-week wash-out period and a 4-week treatment …

Investigating The Worldwide Popularity Of Forensics, Heather Stankiewicz
Investigating The Worldwide Popularity Of Forensics, Heather Stankiewicz
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
The popularity of forensic science has increased dramatically over the past decade throughout the United States. However, has this popularity spread to other countries around the world and to what extent? In the United States, there are numerous television shows focusing on the law and crime scene analysis, including “CSI,” “Law and Order,” “24,” “Crossing Jordan,” and “Forensic Files,” just to name a few. It is evident that the fascination with forensics has also reached other countries with the spread of the television show “CSI” to England, Thailand, and even India. Because of the popularity with these television shows, this …
Constraining Protein Structure Simulation With Aggregate Data Using Robotic Techniques, Eric Bracey
Constraining Protein Structure Simulation With Aggregate Data Using Robotic Techniques, Eric Bracey
Masters Theses
This approach to protein simulation uses Protein Data Bank information to construct useful, simple, geometric constraints that can be applied to a protein simulation. We compiled experimental data for proteins with between 30-90 residues and analyzed the relationship between their sizes, defined as the radius of a sphere that encloses the 3D structure; the maximum distance between any two residues and the number of residues in the protein. A significant relationship was found and the analysis was used to predict the ranges that the size and maximum distance between residues would have for a protein with a given number of …

An Introductory Look At The Fishes Of The Opossum Creek / Camp Hydaway Lake System And The Effects Of An Herbicide On The Lake's Aquatic Plants, Jefferson T. Deweber
Senior Honors Theses
The Opossum Creek / Camp Hydaway Lake system is a valuable asset to the Biology Department at Liberty University. This study addresses two different aspects of this system, namely the aquatic plants of Camp Hydaway Lake and the fishes of both the lake and Opossum Creek. The plants in the lake, primarily Potamogeton foliosus, were a problem due to their high density and were treated both by grass carp and an aquatic herbicide, diquat. The grass carp did not control the plants adequately, but following the introduction of diquat, the plants were eliminated along one transect and decreased significantly along …

End Of Life Issues Among Hispanics/Latinos: Studying The Utilization Of Hospice Services By The Hispanic/Latino Community, Iraida V. Carrión
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on how terminal diagnoses impact individuals and families within the Hispanic/Latino community. Hispanic/Latino hospice caregivers, Hispanic/Latino non-hospice caregivers and physicians participated in the study, which explores the utilization of hospice by Hispanic/Latino terminally ill individuals. The data collected from 30 semi-structured interviews, ethnographic participant observations, and archival data were analyzed using structured and statistical analysis. Verbatim transcripts were examined through a combination of ethnographic and content analysis. Barriers related to language and culture, as well as immigration, are critical themes that impact access to healthcare. The physicians' discourses relate patients' responses to terminal diagnoses, including the Hispanic/Latino …
